Moonshadows - Brunch with the boyfriend - Seafood Near Me - Malibu, California

Gorgeous views out of dirty windows from everyone leaning up on them. Service was good. Best thing of the night was the clam chowder. I'd honestly come back just to eat that. The calamari wasn't very good. I've had much better. My Miso Cod was okay. I wouldn't order it again. It was pretty fishy. My husband enjoyed his prawn rigatoni. My Moscow Mule was okay. My husband had the Pineapple Mojito. It was very good. I'm returning just for the soup....no joke. Overall, I would probably give this place 3 1/2 stars, but rounded up for the atmosphere. read more

Good place for a date night, with the most spectacular view of the ocean. You're going to be dining right on the water. It's magical! Definitely gets chilly towards the night but they have a lot of heat lamps and seating inside. One of their specials off-menu was this hamachi sashimi which was SO delicious. Melt in your mouth type of fish and I eat sashimi all the time. I'd say this was top 3 sashimi. It was over this cucumber which was drenched in lemon though so I was puckering up. The crab linguine was good, and the tuna steak was also delicious. To be honest, having the tuna steak after that hamachi wasn't a good call because we were just expecting top tier-ness. Our entrees were good although I do think we were paying more for the view and fancy proteins. Our server was the nicest. He was very kind and knew what he was talking about. If you need a new date night spot, this is it! read more

Food: a nice selection of food and the quality is about average. This place is more about the atmosphere and view of the ocean. We love the view and the bright light coming from the ocean. It feels peaceful and chill. Service: pretty good. The staff were very nice and let us know what's good in store. Reservation: you have to make a reservation online or I don't know how long you have to wait lol I came here twice for special occasions. The price is more on the high end due to the location but definitely come back again! read more

My family and I came in for dinner 08/31 for a reservation made at 4:30pm. A white couple in front of us in line asked the host for a window seat and she said, "yes of course!" When I asked for a window seat as well, she said, "sadly we don't have any open at the moment." I said we were willing to wait 30 minutes or more for one. And in a condescending manner told us, "it's going to be wayyyy longer than that." Didn't even smile at me once the whole time. My family agreed to just sit down at one of the booths. When we sat down, we noticed so many window tables near us that were empty, as shown in one of the photos below. We ordered the Habachi Crudo and fried Calamari for appetizers. Definitely recommend the Habachi Crudo if available. I also got the sea bass, which to my taste was too salty. The crab and lobster linguini was delicious though. By the end of our meal, we had multiple employees ask us if we were done with our food, which made us feel so rushed. From beginning to end, I couldn't help but feel unwelcome and judged. I just wanted to treat my parents out to a good dinner. The food was so so. I had better services at Mastros or Nobu. I definitely wouldn't be back here. read more

I first went to Moonshadows when I was in my early teens and now 20 years later, I stopped in for dinner with friends and had another great experience. I have fond memories of the last meal that I had there when I was very young and can confirm here in late June 2024 they still serve great meals and experiences. The selling point of the restaurant is that it's right on the water in Malibu. It's almost on the Santa Monica/Malibu border so not deep into Malibu at all. There is very limited parking on the west side of the street so the best option is $12 for valet parking or you can park across the street, but then would have to run across it fighting the fast traffic. Our server was very polite and everything we ordered came out fairly quickly. It is a bit expensive, but that is due obviously to the location, but I see this restaurant as more of a celebration spot versus a frequent dinner location. I reserved a table a month and a half in advance and requested right along the water, however we were seated at a booth away from the water which was probably the only part of our meal that we were disappointed with. We still had a view of the water, but obviously not as close as the tables right against the glass. The food was very good and made up for the seating. I started off with the Beet Salad and thought it was very light and fresh and it really hit the spot. The goat cheese really made it for me. For my entrée I chose the fish special of the day, which was the Chilean Seabass. Seabass is my favorite fish and they did a great job with this fillet. It came with a light sauce on the side and the wilted spinach was honestly very good. Overall it was a great dinner, even though I believe it's a little more expensive than it should be. I would definitely recommend it to anyone searching for a dinner with a great view. read more

Hubby and I came here for a date night and it did not disappoint. The sound of the ocean all night was very relaxing and the lighting was warm and romantic. Ernesto was our server and he was very helpful with food suggestions when we asked and was friendly and attentive throughout the night. The calamari and salad were surprisingly large enough to share and they also give you some complimentary bread and butter. I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and the butter sauce it came with on the side was light and just right. I had to add a little salt to the fish but the texture was great and w/ the butter sauce on top, it was delicious. Hubby also really enjoyed the Miso Cod. The apple pie was light and flaky and a good size and hubby liked his cheesecake too. Overall, a lovely experience! Highly recommend! read more

Breathtaking view but food left me wanting more. The outdoor seating by the wall was perfect for listening to the waves crash as you enjoy your drinks. But as the food came I was left disappointed as all of it came out luke warm. Not sure if this was a result of outside seating causing a delay in the kitchen - waiter communication but this affected the meal heavily. The calamari was seasoned with nice dipping sauce but didn't taste completely fresh 7/10 Crab cake was very disappointing and tasted pre-made(like from a frozen mix). No lump sweet fresh crab like I'm used to and heavily filled with a carrot mix. 2/10 Ended up ordering French fries because we were hungry and wanted something you can't mess up, they came out in 2 seconds signifying they were already cooked and again didn't taste completely fresh 4/10 Pumpkin tortellini 9/10 the highlight of the meal, pasta tasted freshly made and well seasoned and hot! Tiger curry shrimp 7/10 good flavors, good quality shrimp but again wasn't hot enough, could use some more umami seasoning and different garnishes Tiramisu- we took it to-go, 13$ for the smallest tiramisu ever, although it did taste amazing 8/10 Drinks were fine, limoncello was the strongest 7/10 The views were amazing, waiters were attentive, but food just didn't do it for me especially for the price, I would rather go down the road back to Mastros :( I suggest a shift from premade food already plated to be taken out, to freshly made dishes for each customer. This place felt casual almost like a bar you would eat at after swimming at the beach. I would try sitting inside to see if there's a difference in food temperature. read more

I would say come for the views, but not really the food and DEFINITELY not the drinks. The views were absolutely stunning and it made up for the average dishes. For the price of the food, I really wasn't impressed. The miso black cod was good but felt overly saucy. The clam chowder was the best thing we got. The grilled octopus is decent but came with a lot of extra sauce and beans which didn't feel necessary. I'm disappointed to say this but the drinks were truly awful. The sangria was so sugary and felt like a sugar bomb with no alcohol. The espresso martini tasted like milk with vodka, absolutely awful and you can tell by the consistency that it wasn't even shaken. May have been a mix. We also got a whiskey mule and it was also extremely sugary. If I came back again it would purely be for views & maybe a small appetizer. read more

A classic restaurant where you can't go wrong. I've been coming for many years and one thing about this place...It has the most stunning views of the ocean. Delicious food with friendly service. For my most recent visit, I really wanted a reservation during the sunset for my husband's birthday and I couldn't get anything online..luckily I called the restaurant and the waitress was so friendly and was able to accommodate me. We had a beautiful dinner. I always stick with the lobster because it's just divine! There's vegan options as well which is also great. read more

These four stars really are 3.5 stars. The food is okay: I felt that the salad could've used more crab for the price point and had a richer dressing flavor. We also had the lobster roll - in other reviews, people mentioned having to remove shell. I'm sad I found one piece in one bite. Similar to the salad, it lacked seasoning and flavor. It's far from a standout dish - if you're coming out to Moonshadows for a memorable meal, you'll be disappointed. The dessert, the souffle cake, was good and redeemed the meal. Now, what the appeal is of this place is the view and being by the water. It was a beautiful day. We came midday on a Friday, so valet was $10. We also like our server Allison who had a good attitude and checked in with us with frequency (but not so much that it was overbearing). She made a good non alcoholic suggestion for a drink. read more

We celebrated our daughter's birthday at Moonshadows in Malibu last night, and what a great place it is! It's not cheap, but definitely worth the money. The ambiance was lovely. Bonito, our server, was very attentive and excellent. The bread rolls were served hot and delicious. I ordered the swordfish, which was tangy and juicy, and we had Rosa Regale, which paired wonderfully. The Chilean sea bass was also delicious. My daughter enjoyed the cod, and my niece thoroughly enjoyed the surf and turf--a healthy portion. The clam chowder was good, and the Rosa Regale wine, comparable to Moscato, was excellent. Dessert here is also excellent with really great choices! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to partake as I was so full. Overall, it was a most pleasing dining experience, especially with the beautiful oceanic scenery. Well worth the drive, and the quality is worth paying extra for! read more

We had plans to visit PCH and see Point Dume, so we made reservations to have lunch here along the way. We went on a very busy Sunday, not only was this place packed, but getting there from Marina Del Rey was slow-going in all the traffic on PCH too. Once there, we were greeted and seated with a smile and we chose to dine on the deck over-looking the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean just a few feet below. It was a true treat as the view was amazing, but hearing the waves was equally as appealing! The menu for brunch has all the basics for brunch, but also some nice items for lunch as well. We chose their Roasted Organic Red & Yellow Beet Salad with shrimp added and the Miso Glazed Black Cod and both were presented very nicely and tasted excellent! As a "man of color" I can tell you that the service was great during our visit, we weren't rushed and refills of ice tea was frequent. Additionally, we were treated very nice, as we all the guest interactions we witnessed around us. Highly suggest making reservations and visiting when in the area! read more

What a great Friday night. Arrived early for our reservations and were seated right away. It was pretty slow for a Friday night, I'd say. The hostess Ashley was very welcoming and attentive. Ordered the crab cake and calamari as appetizers. Nothing special about the calamari, so you can definitely skip on that and try something else on the menu. The crab cake though, it was delish and worth ordering. Keep in mind though that you do only get one. Take my word on this..the lobster/crab pasta..get that! It's a must! It's a win. And when the sauce is all you're left with, dip your bread in it. DELICIOUS! For dessert we ordered the apple pie/tart. It was good but looking forward to trying a different dessert next time. read more

Moonshadows was recommended to me by a friend and it definitely lived up to the hype. The service is really good, my friend let me know our waitress used to be the hostess and we were surprised because it seemed like she had always been a waitress because she took care of us very well and checked in on us regularly. The restaurant cleanliness is a plus and the view is just amazing. We had a salad and tuna tartare to start and they were delicious. We asked for some extra wonton and they brought them right away. We also ordered the miso glazed black cod and all the flavors just combined together perfectly. The bok choy, green rice, mushrooms, miso sauce and Cod combination just works! We ended our lunch with desert m, and the crème brûlée is made fresh and it looks simple but is a lot more complex, it was cooked to perfection and i almost ordered a second one because i enjoyed it so much. Will definitely be back soon for lunch. read more

Ah, Moonshadows in Malibu, almost every seat in the house has a great view of the ocean, where the waves serenade your meal, and the prices make your wallet gently weep. Let's dive into this culinary odyssey, shall we? The seafood here is fresh and brought into some really good Italian cuisine. The staff was attentive, friendly, and knew their menu well. Parking, oh parking. If finding a spot here was a game, it'd be 'Where's Waldo?' in expert mode. Most of the time you have to park somewhere where you need to cross the street where there are like no pedestrian walks so that was interesting. For an appetizer, we ordered the Fried Calamari and the rest of dinner consisted of the Miso Glazed Black Cod & Tiger Shrimp Rigatoni. The appetizer was yummy and pro tip: do a half dip of the Chipotle Aioli and Marinara sauce! I already felt full from this and their complimentary bread, however it is worth noting that the main courses were not left unattended. The miso cod held a buttery texture and the side of bok choy and shiitake mushrooms made sense, but the green tea rice, not so much. The shrimp and rigatoni were simple yet had such a nice flavor with zucchini and shaved ricotta. While the food and views were super heart eyes, the lack of sanitation was stark-after being seated immediately, our plates had slight dark marks on them and our server brought a tea pot of hot water which had mold under the lid. The restaurant has been opened since 2001, and I'm not too sure if their dinnerware has been replaced since then, but if not, you are better off making pasta at home with a background of ocean waves crashing. read more

We went here for the first time on a Saturday night. We had reservations for seven. They have valet, which is nice because it's on a really busy street. The view is breathtaking as it's right on the water and you can here the waves crashing against the rocks, so it really makes for a romantic evening. We were seated in the outside patio and had a first hand view of the ocean. Our waiter was Jonathan. First off after we were seated it took a minute for him to come over. When he did he asked if we were ready to order and if we wanted water. Now I dine out a lot and I know it's customary to ask if you want drinks and/or an appetizer but we were just asked if we wanted water. Okay so he brings the water over and leaves. We had to call him over to order drinks....strike 1. Once we order the drinks we then have to get his attention again to order appetizers.... I mean do you work here or what, I'm confused. Then as I hear him at the table next to us telling them the specials , telling them to take their time etc.... Okay I'm not tripping but I am starting to feel some type of way. The appetizers come out, we're eating, Jonathan has passed our table several times but never once stops to ask us how's the food. I see him standing over by the bar in my line of vision just standing there but apparently doesn't have time to check on us but dies have time to check on all his other tables. Okay, still observing. He finally comes back to our table after we are fine with the appetizers to ask if we're ready to order, without telling us the specials like he did the other table...., we actually had to ask him about them then he told us, smh. So dinner comes mind you we've finished our first drink by now but we're never asked if we wanted another drink. Now he's passed by about ten times avoiding our table so we had to flag him down to ask for another drink. So we're eating and to no surprise Jonathan doesn't come to our table once to ask how the food is or if we need anything. Again we have to flag him down for salt and pepper as the food didn't have much flavor. I was not pleased with the overall experience for our first time at all and will definitely not be back. Last night was my first time at Moonshadows and their website says every bite overflows with flavor. The lie detector determined that was a lie. The view is amazing but everything else was meh. Drinks We ordered Phoenix Rising, which was immediately switched out for a jalapeño margarita (much better choice) & a beer. Apps/Salad Crab cake: personally I'm appalled when an app only has one of something. Splitting a crab cake is ridiculous and it was dry. Clam chowder: decent taste, nice portion, silky texture. Pear salad: All the makings of a great salad, but I've had better at hotel conferences. Entree Black Cod: Good taste, portion and presentation Scottish salmon: Salmon was perfectly cooked with amazing Beurre Blanc. Potatoes and spinach were giving very much after thought. Service: We went at night so maybe they were tired because it was far below expectations. Not rude, but unavailable. Plus someone took our unfinished drink. read more

The views are breathtaking; the food nor the service can claim high honor. We had a Zen friend in town and wanted to show him the California life.. We took him to moon shadows for lunch. The Zen feeling of the ocean for ambience was the only good thing about our visit. They do a good job valet parking and asking you if you have a reservation before you get out of the car so you won't have to wait for hours. However, with a reservation, we still had to wait about 30 minutes--standing in the bar area. Once seated, we ordered drinks. Unfortunately, that's where the snafus began. Our drinks were delivered--on us! Our server was very nice, but he spilled the drinks on the table and on two of my friends. There was an immediate cleanup crew but the laxadaisical attitudes of the servers and management is what ruined this experience. Another server had previously come over to let us know that our server was a trainee. However when the drinks were spilled, this server did not revisit our table but to redeliver the drinks. No words or apologies. I expected management to immediately come over, as 2 of my friends were doused in alcohol. The white manager on duty did not visit our table in the whole 30 minutes we waited. I was getting hot, while the other two were getting beyond... I stopped the next worker I saw, who happened to be a manager just coming on duty. Thus he got an ear full from one of my friends in whom the drink was spilled upon. His reaction was less than managerial. He stated, "I just got here." Instead of stating, "I'll check with my staff and come back over to you immediately." The food was not all that great and these reactions made it worse. Thankfully at the end management redeemed themselves and gave us 50% off the bill. However, no one still addressed the cleaning bill of my 2 friends. read more

Moonshadow probably has one of the best views in Malibu. My SP made reservations and we arrived a little early but they were able to seat us right away. The view really is breathtaking and we luckily got to see dolphins as we ate. You really feel like you are on vacation while dining there. Once seated they give you complementary warm bread and butter which is divine. To start we shared their calamari, burrata salad, and dungeness crab cake. The calamari was a large portion but was eh. It was fried a little too much. The burrata salad was good but nothing spectacular. The crab cake was probably the best appetizer we had there. It was a large crab cake served with a delicious arugula salad with a yummy citrus dressing. The crab cake was filled with yummy dungeness crab. It did not disappoint. For our food I went with their Fish of the Day which happened to be Seabass. It is usually served with rice but I asked them to sub for veggies. The veggies were perfect but the seabass was a little overcooked for my liking. Although it was still really good and such a large piece of meat. I was really full. My plate came with some sort of yummy butter sauce. My SP got their dungeness crab and shrimp salad which he thought was okay. Pricing is pretty good here. It was about $200 and we thought that was really good for everything. The food wasn't super amazing but we both had such a good time and really enjoyed the ambience. They also had outside seating which they offered to us but its quite small out there and we didn't care to have the sun right in our eyes. I absolutely would come back. It's the perfect for dates and great to hang out with a small group of friends. read more
