This is a very unique place. Good for groups to chill at or place games. They have a ton of games to choose from that free to play. They even have like old school video games there. When we went there was an Irish band there practicing. I thought that was cool. They have both room temp and cold mead to choice from. Their mead is sort of on the drier side, I prefer sweeter myself, but open to try. Overall decent mead not my cup of tea but everyone's different. read more

Nice place with a lot of beer and mead offerings! I came here late Friday looking for some regular wine- I'm actually not big on mead unfortunately. I had a good time perusing the aisles and ended up going with a couple seltzers/beers. The staff was really friendly though and did recommend one of their best selling meads. It was not crowded just before 10pm and I saw a few people enjoying games, conversing etc. Laid back spot overall. A little hidden with a staircase leading to the entrance but the main sign is well lit and you can see it right off the street. Food allowed to be brought in! The guy at the counter was really nice and recommended some drinks for us new folks. The ambiance was cozy and on game night Monday, nerdy! Tons of different games! It looks very LGBTQ+ friendly based on flags and some decor around. (I am not a dry / bitter alcohol lover as a foreword) The meads really were lackluster compared to others I've tried. A lot were dry or bitter even if they were called sweet. My favorite was the Strawberry Rhubarb Mead but it was still dry. When I think of honey wine, I think sweet. I absolutely didn't love the butterscotch mead, smelled like old lady and tasted so bitter. I DID like the after taste of the vanilla latte one but it was not great warm. Parking was a big annoyance for me. I know it's not the shops fault but there was not any close parking and it's only on the street. Thankfully it was free parking past a certain time. Overall it gives the similar vibes to Gizmos in Durham. read more

I'm writing this review on 6/6/26 , after a visit to your Moon Dog Meadery. Overall ,my experience was pleasant, the Irish music was great , drinks were reasonably priced and tasty. However, I did have one glaring negative interaction with the bartender that was on shift this afternoon. My wife and I came to the counter with our two small dogs to pay for our drinks and chips. The bartender came from around the counter to meet our dogs. He then proceeded to "train" our one dog by insisting that they wait for their treat longer than they are accustomed to. When a suggestion was made to have our dog lay down before asking them to wait, the request was ignored. Thankfully, our dog met his expectations and he finally gave them the treat. I was very offended and put off by this behavior. It is not the bartender's dog, nor his place to demand anything of our dog! In the future, he should be mindful of this, or he might risk losing some customers. read more

Game night! Moon Dog has several different themes during the week. I come on Mondays and Thursdays for their game nights, but there is an open mic on Sundays, dancing with a live band on Fridays, and karaoke on Wednesdays. The staff is friendly, and they make and bottle their own award-winning mead on-site. There's no food sold, which means it's ok to bring your dogs, and folks do. There is a large refrigerated section on one wall with loads of local and national brews. They have a lot of games for customers, but on game nights, many others bring games (and some snacks) to share. A great community has built up here over the past two years, and it's only growing. Disappointed in this place. The service is so poor and the environment resembles a dungeon. While I purchased a Too Good To Go Monday morning, weather was slated to be poor later in the day with black ice likely. When I called to find out if I could come by earlier Moon Dog's voice states they are only open Wednesday through Sunday. So I waited until Wednesday to stop by. The owner took no ownership of their not returning my message or that his hours stated on his voicemail was incorrect. That's extremely poor service and why the app refunded my money. read more

This brand new meadery and bottle shop is a bit of a hidden gem. Located under Joe Van Gogh on Broad Street drop down a couple of flights of stairs to a cavernous space. What used to be a fencing club is now a subterranean bar offering beer, mead, wine, and board games. It's a chill space and reasonably priced, I could see it being popular with the Duke crowd. The space is still being built out along with its in-house mead so be patient. Over the long run they will be adding a stage, live music and more but enjoy it for what it is right now... read more

Been wanting to try this place for awhile so after a stroll at Duke Gardens we stopped in late ona Saturday afternoon. The place was very quiet. There was only one guy working, assisted by his beautiful husky, and a few people browsing the beer selection. I wanted to try their mead so after checking out their cold and warm beer selections (pretty extensive) I made my way over to the bar. The guy working quickly assisted me. I ordered a flight. My favorite was the Blood of the Dogs, a mixed berry mead, though I didn't love any of them. The place had a very relaxed vibe with tons of board games but I have to say my favorite part was the sweet husky who sat on my feet and let me scratch her ears. She would get up to check out anyone new entering (great guard dog) and then return to me. I'd definitely return but probably try some new beers instead of the mead, and remember my glasses so I can play board games! read more

Was interested in the monthly Blues Sunday, advertised on Google when I searched for live concerts. However found out when I visited Moon Dog Meadery that the event was canceled. It makes sense now why the event was hard to find on the website, but I would've appreciated an updated web page rather than pulling the event altogether as it turns out Google still recommended the event. I was able to go to the open mic later that day (Sunday) instead at 7pm. Crowd was about a dozen people and about eight acts (three musicians, one who gave a short speech, a ventriloquist and four stand up comics). No set list, just whoever wanted to perform that day in open mic tradition, so you cannot know what you are going to see ahead of time. If you go to see the acts, buy a drink from the fridge ($4-$8, alcoholic and some non-alcoholic), or a four pack from the clearance shelves for a discount. It helps to be a little drunk so you can enjoy the amateur performances. Have an open mind, try to enjoy yourself. There is original songs to listen to (you can hear banjo to melodic alt-grunge), and imperfect stand up on sensitive topics which personally I thought was natural and reasonable for the art form, as open mic is a trying ground for comedians to dispense with material or totally go for it. Bomb or soar, for the audience it's free! Saying all this because I'd like to encourage attendees to support amateurs, when some of the audience was stiff as stone. What did they pay $20 to see a show like everywhere else in town? No! I got some craft cider and kombucha that I've seen at farmers markets nearby, but a dollar cheaper. Enjoyed the cider but thought the kombucha was a bit water-y, as I make my own too. The decor is like industrial meets flea market and art gallery, with the paintings for sale on the wall (some splendid and others, well they have more years to grow). It's nothing fancy, and I hear the place is pretty recent, so it's a bit empty too. But the venue obviously supports the community and local talent, and seems to have many events, so I recommend coming down to buy a $5-$8 craft drink, or a $9-$12 clearance pack, and enjoy yourself! Bonus is that the #1 bus stop is close by. And Duke gardens is also close! As well as Loco Pops if you want ice cream. read more
