Fun tour of the distillery. Felicia guided our group, described the vodka and gin making process, plus other products including a honey liqueur and desert liqueurs, and some sampling to boot. Cool woman owned business.

We had a party of 4 at 5:30 on a a Saturday evening for a tour that my daughter had purchased on Groupon. We were greeted by some very enthusiastic ladies behind the bar. We were offered a taste oof one of their canned cocktails. There was a choice of 3 cocktails. It was a very small cup sIze. I don't like gin or vodka so it was fine by me. Our tour leader ("mermaid") was absolutely top notch. Her knowledge of the fermentation process was amazing.. It was evident that she loved working there. We had a few other tastes of gin. We also toured the bottling area. Everything is bottled by hand. Quite an operation. My favorite part of the tour was the sampling of their liquors.. YUMMM !!!! Coffee, chocolate,, mocha.. Each of these was delicious. Il will be looking for some on my next trip to the ABC Store. This is a top notch distillery. Thumbs up to the owners !!

Ahh, gin... The cause of and solution to all of life's problems (according to Homer Simpson). And the newest distillery in town, Durham Distillery is doing a very nice job bringing artisanal gin to the Triangle. I got a preview of this small distillery tonight and was pretty impressed. For their VIP preview event we got to check out their space, distilling equipment and sample some of their libations. Durham Distillery rocks out a very warm, throw-back bar with a speak-easy feel, very classy. I got to try both their Conniption gins, American Dry and Navy. Both are a lot lighter and more floral than the heavier gins I'm used to drinking. In addition to gin, Durham Distillery does excellent coffee and chocolate liquors, I definitely am a fan of the chocolate. In back they have some beautiful distillery equipment imported from Germany. Beautiful shiny copper plumbing and equipment makes for a cleaner gin. And some cold infusion equipment allows them to create flavored liquors without subjecting the ingredients to debilitating heat. So definitely they are off to a good start and I'm not sure if they'll have tours or what have you but thankfully you can check Durham Distillery out AND purchase a bottle onsite due to a recent change in legislation. So welcome to the neighborhood, Durham Distillery. You're off to a great start...

When I had my first gin and tonic at Alley Twenty Six I knew I had to make my way down to do a tour at Durham Distillery! Such a fun time, Erin did a fantastic job with the tour. During the tour you get to try a sample of the cucumber vodka, the american dry and navy strength gins and chocolate, coffee and mocha liqueurs. Those liqueurs were delicious, the chocolate and coffee are both local which was an added bonus. If you have not done a tour already, get your a** to Durham!

Very nice staff who are very informative. Offer a lot of back history regarding gin. Interesting ways they produce their products. We enjoyed mocha liqueur the most.

I went here after getting a Groupon for the tour and I definitely enjoyed it! My five star rating is mostly for all of their spirits which I thoroughly enjoyed, even their cucumber vodka as coming from someone who doesn't like vodka. Let's talk about their products! I loved both of their gins, but he American dry, was by far my favourite and I definitely see myself getting that bottle to sip. The juniper flavour is strong but very smooth! Also their gin and tonic cans are wonderful and it will easily be one of my go to drinks. I also very much enjoyed their liquers- coffee under the name Damn Fine Liquers - again very pleasant to drink and strong real flavours. I did not enjoy the cucumber vodka as much as the other but that's mostly my dislike of vodka in general. The place has been recently expanded so we got to see some of the equipment where the actual gin making occurs as well as their liquer and roto vap for that beautiful cucumber flavour. I've been on other (gin)distillery tours before and as far as tours go this place could work on some more information on how tasting notes work or some chemistry behind distilling. It could be better but definitely worth the Groupon. In all, a wonderful local gem, with really good drinks. Will definitely be buying them again. Tip : if you buy their products from their store, all profits go to them!

The Triangle area just keeps getting that much cooler with all these amazing distilleries in the area. I had a chance to check out the all new Durham Distillery this week and I was not disappointed. Right next door to Blue Note Grill you won't miss this little gem. Gin lovers this will be heaven for you beware. Owners Melissa and Lee have worked hard to perfect their spirits and I enjoyed them all. They are currently the only distillery in the world using vapor infusion and vacuum technology. I loved tasting all the botanical elements in their gin from figs, honeysuckle and more. They are currently offering tours for $10 and it's well worth it if you are into learning more about how these delicious spirits are made. Using the best technology out there it's like walking into Willy Wonka's workshop. While talking about Willy Wonka let's talk about the Damn Fine Liqueur they are making at Durham Distillery. I enjoyed all of them: Chocolate, Mocha, and Coffee (made with local Videri chocolate and Slingshot coffee). The Mocha was by far my favorite, don't mind if I need a little pick me up in my morning coffee:) lol. You can also purchase tonic from Alley 26 here, Videri chocolate bars, and Slingshot cold brew. I really enjoyed the tour from Melissa and the generous tasting. They are known for their gin and you won't be disappointed. Need a gift for the hard to buy? How bought a bottle of liquor from a local distillery? Welcome Durham Distillery so excited to have you all right here in the Triangle.

Tours are 1/2 off in March ($5/person, normally $10!)

What a lovely surprise to find this gem tucked away in downtown Durham! I had heard great things…read moreabout their espresso martini, so when we finally visited, we had to try it. And, it truly lived up to the hype. One of the best we've ever had! I also tried two other cocktails made with their house-distilled rum and gin, and both were delicious and perfectly balanced. The seasonal menu is creative and reasonably priced, we were genuinely impressed. The ambiance is charming and cozy despite a bit warm inside (the AC was pretty weak), but quiet and tastefully decorated with velvet couches, exposed walls, vintage touches, and fresh flowers on each table. We had fun flipping through their amazing cocktail book collection on the shelf too. The bartenders were very friendly and offered us focaccia from Ninth Street Bakery to pair with our drinks for free, which was such a thoughtful and tasty addition. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and are so happy to see a micro-distillery thriving in the heart of Durham. Can't wait to return for an official tour and to sample more of their spirits!

That response will get a smile every time. Super dog-friendly, to say the least, both outside and inside. Outside has several tables under a covered area, and inside has a few couches (with tiny tables) and a long bar you can sit at. We've been a few times now, and the service is super friendly and helpful, every time. It's small and intimate inside, but we never have a problem finding a seat! I love that they have snacks you can help yourself to, in airtight jars at the bar (peanut butter filled pretzels, sour worms, etc). Also important to note- the inside is NOT air conditioned. We stopped in on a HOT day, and it's brutal inside, with cloth couches and just one small fan. Love this bar, all of their cocktails (wine available too), and all of the staff! Will be back (a lot)!!

If you imagine drinking a really spice forward honey but with liquid consistency, that is exactly what Krupnikas reminds me of. It's a traditional Lithuanian style of Spice Honey Liqueur that began production in NC back in 2012. Every time I've tried their product, the owners/partners have been extremely friendly and able to tell me where to buy it and how to mix it (if you don't want to drink it straight). We visited the 'distillery' last night for the first time during their Kickstarter promotion tour, and I have to admit, it was fun, but it was much different than I expected. First off, while the location produces liquors, they don't actual distill them there. They receive their 100 proof grain alcohol in mass and add their spices to it, reducing it down to an 80 proof liquor. The product is really good, but very unique. It runs about $30/750 mL bottle, and while I enjoy it, I don't think I would drink it often enough to purchase a huge bottle since it is such a distinct, sweet, flavor. HOWEVER, coming into the winter season, I DO think Krupnikas would be great in a hot form, throw a little of that in an apple cider for a big kick! BUT, The Brothers Vilgalys Spirits isn't JUST producing Krupnikas anymore. Since July they released four new liqueurs called Zaphod (starfruit, guava, mint), Beebop (rubarb, hibiscus, all spice), Beatnik (beets, orange, thyme, rosemary) and Jabberwock (spicy coffee). All four are 60 proof, sweetened with raw cane sugar, and flavored with whole botanicals, herbs, and spices. They are very unique, and I can honestly say I've never tried something quite like them. Although the liquors are very unique, I can't say I'd drink them often. They all remind me of alcoholic teas, funny enough, with the Beebob being my favorite and the most versatile in my opinion. They are all incredibly flavor forward, but you'd really have to think about how to mix them pre-cocktail. The actual space of the 'distillery' is pretty, uh... well, it needs some help. It's awesome that you can now FILL your own bottles there (as of October 1st and the new NC laws) but the space is pretty disorganized. They are in the process of opening the warehouse next door as a tasting room, and I think once that is complete, The Brothers Vilgalys Spirits will become more of a destination and not a quick stop through. I look forward to re-visiting them once the tasting room is open!
