This is possibly the best ice cream I've ever had. Actually, I think it is. We stopped here late at night en route to Charlottesville after hearing about it from a colleague that attended UVA. WOW. Best ice cream I have ever had. I always make sure to hit this place up on my way home from college and it never disappoints. The best part is there is a drive through! This makes getting the ice cream convenient. There is a good amount of parking but can get crowded during busy times. The drive through especially can become backed up and it may be easier to walk up to the kiosk. Some of my favorite flavors are holstein and the strawberry, but they have many other delicious favors. My boyfriend and I drove past Moo Thru on our way to Shenandoah and made the split second decision that we were making a pit stop on our way home bc it looked so cute. We got there around 5:30pm on Saturday and the drive through line was packed, so we decided to just park and go to the outdoor pick up counter. There is a seating area outside with plenty of picnic tables and string lights but we decided to eat our ice cream in the car bc it was cold outside (I don't know why I always crave ice cream when its freezing out). I got two scoops in a cup with sprinkles and my boyfriend got two scoops in a waffle bowl w hot fudge. It came out around $11, which I didn't think was outrageous, especially bc the ice cream was so good - you can clearly tell the ice cream is homemade. I love that it's a drive through too! This drive-in/walk up ice cream shop has some of the BEST ice cream I've ever had! Don't let the sometimes long lines deter you - it is worth the wait!! The ice cream is so delicious, creamy, made from fresh dairy (they supply their own milk from their local farm). My favorites are the cookie dough and cookies and cream in a freshly-made waffle cone. The cookie dough chunks are big, and the cookies are mixed perfectly into the ice cream. My father (who is diabetic) can vouch for the sugar-free flavors as well - chocolate is his winning choice. My husband and I typically use the drive thru line if we're driving to and from DC, but there are also seating options of picnic tables if you have time to sit. If it weren't so far away from us, we'd probably stop by more, but it serves as a great halfway stopping point on the way to DC! read more

DELICIOUS! We passed this place on Saturday as we were driving from DC to Madison and commented on the string of cars waiting to get in, lined up out their parking lot and well up 29. On our way home the following Tuesday the cars were gone and we figured to give the place a try, even if it was before lunch. We are glad we did. This is some of the tastiest, creamiest ice cream I've had in a long time. And it didn't hurt that the servings were both generous and reasonably priced. (I hope the owners don't read that.) I can't believe I didn't write a review for Moo Thru till now. I'm in love with this place. I mean who doesn't like ice cream. Whether it's hot or cold, I would eat ice cream here any time. The only thing keeps me away from going here everyday is 1-hour drive. I love their cookie dough ice cream on waffle cone. I just gotta get it every time when I'm here. The place has drive through so it's very convenient. You can also place your order and pay at the window. Then they will call your number when it's ready. They have outdoor seats but it may be too cold to sit outside in the cold days. Since I live far away, I usually buy a quart to go and it still tastes good at home. Moo Thru is a must when you are on the way to Charlottesville or to NOVA or vice versa. I've been a fan of Moo thru for a few years now. They have very freshly made ice cream ranging from all colors and flavors. They also sell shakes, sorbets, sundaes as well as their specialty flavors. When you get close to the store, you can smell the wonderful aroma of the freshly made waffle cones. They have ample parking spots and also a drive thru for people on the go. I do have some cons about this place Prior to this Covid-19 Pandemic, it was pretty joyful to come here. However, they have restricted to drive-thru only during Covid-19 lockdown. There were lines of cars along the road waiting to get to their order. I waited about an hour in the line of cars to get my ice cream. Their scoops certainly got a lot smaller compared to what it used to be, but they kept their price same. They still kick it with the flavors, but really downsized their portion. read more

I usually love this place. They do have great ice cream. But lately the service is a hot mess. Today we drove here specifically to have the grilled cheese and milkshake special for lunch. They gave us our milkshakes after a reasonable amount of time. Then we waited a long time and still no grilled cheese. Then they gave grilled cheeses to people that ordered well after us. I suspect they gave them our grilled cheese, but part of the problem was they would open the window and give whatever to anyone without actually calling out the name on the order. Driving by and spur of the moment decided to stop in and try the ice cream because I've heard and seen so many rave reviews. The parking lot was full which I took as a good sign but it meant I had to settle for drive thru. The drive thru line was pretty long but moved quickly and within about 5 minutes I was placing my order (mocha ice cream) a few minutes later I was back on the road, ice cream in hand. The ice cream was pleasantly creamy. I have to say though, the flavor didn't wow me. It was sweet but not distinctively rich or flavorful, which a mocha ice cream should be. Maybe my expectations were a little high given the reputation of Moo-Thru locally, but I've definitely had much better ice cream. I can't speak to the facilities or decor or anything other than the efficiency of the service in the drive thru line, but I'd say this is only average ice cream. Worth a stop if you're hankering for a little refreshment on a hot day and happen to be passing by, but not worth a special trip. read more

Well finally we were able to stop on our way to Barboursville. We had a great dinner in Warrenton - at Claire's at the Depot. After about a 15 minute wait, I finally received my ice cream. I had ordered a waffle bowl instead of a sugar or cake cone. Still, I was a little shocked by the size of the portion. NEVER in my life had I seen one scoop look this tiny at any ice cream shop in the US. Sure one scoop of gelato in Italy is a little small. But this is the US. They usually give a little more than this especially since I paid extra for the waffle cone. Not sure if the server was struggling on their first day scooping a scoop of ice cream. I have no idea. My husband got a root beer float and his vanilla ice cream was a little on the smaller side but more acceptable than mine. Too bad! Went here to get a chocolate shake and a birthday cake shake, they gave me a large when I ordered a small and forgot the chocolate. They made me pay for the other milkshake and get back in line to reorder it when I definitely said it. The other customers around me heard me. Then I was told by a 15-year-old not to smoke. If you are non-smoking establishment, you need to have non-smoking signs, it is ridiculous to expect people not to smoke outside. especially when they're already standing away from the other people.
