It's really cool to have a bakery in your town. Everything we've tried here has been absolutely delicious and the prices are great! The only reason I can't give it (5) stars is because of one of the ladies in there... Cute, little bakery with a lot of the basics you'd expect. A number of cookies, donuts, and various pastries. Has a very "old town" charm to it. I've mostly had the donuts, which have been good. The classic yeasted, glazed donut is my favorite. I'm not usually a cake donut fan, but I've tried their apple and blueberry cake donuts and while I still prefer yeasted, I'd say try out the cake donuts. read more

You know the place is good when there is a line before they even open. Busy little bakery with some of the freshest and softest donuts I've had. They certainly are not a fancy donut shop that your might find in DC, LV, or LA but there is a beautiful charm in finding a little bakery who sells caramel frosted, jelly, custard filled, Boston crème, and glazed donuts ready by the dozen. Best Boston Cream Donuts ever! They are the small Mom & Pop kind of place that are a cornerstone of local business. It's in a quant little unflashy old town back street storefront that speaks hometown bakery. The cookies and cakes are really great and their Donuts truly are the best around. I anxiously wait for Easter to come around every year because that is when they sell their legendary Country Ham on Biscuits. They are bite-sized bits of Heaven on Earth. Lastly, the people who run it are friendly, courteous and they make it a very wonderful experience. I have moved away from my native Virginia but a family from my church relocated nearby Culpeper and I told them all about Knakal's Bakery; one of the places that I get homesick for. Not sure why the stars in here are so low, we can't get enough. Every time my family and I have had Knakals, they deliver. Absolutely delicious while also being the only reasonably priced bakery in Nova. $1.25 for a donut!! Compare that to only an 'okay' donut at Great Harvest for $4. This comes at a great loss for me because I am not one to leave reviews but no one would answer the phone since Saturday. My wedding was Sunday and I picked my cake up Saturday! At first glance my wedding cake beautiful but verrrry heavy ! I have help in the car to help transport the cake so that's level and safe to the reception! It was a two tier butter cream almond with raspberry filling nothing out of the norm ! How ever 10 minutes In to the ride down a straight road and going below speed limit with two people in the back, I hear oh no mom pull over !! My cake is now in 1 side of the box and melting The cake was warm No dowels or supports And was sliding because it was not frozen! Crying I called my mom and the bakery . My mother answered the bakery did NOT! I called 4 times more with no answer on Saturday I Took the cake to my mothers where it had to be pieced back together twice I again called them on Monday then Tuesday with no answer and no way to leave a message ! To any Culpeper native, the nondescript white box that houses Knakal's doughnuts are legendary. The stuff of dreams that shows up at bake sales, nurses stations, and teacher's break rooms. There is a good reason for this. It's not as if there's a lack of doughnuts in Culpeper. We have a Dunkin Donuts after all. It is simply because its the best doughnut in town. It's odd though because its not the glazed or the chocolate doughnuts that this establishment is known for. They're good don't get me wrong but the real star of the show is their boston cream. You know its good when its sold out by 11am. Also it's total culinary and business witchcraft that each doughnut is like 89 cents. The price hasn't felt like it changed since the Bush administration. Older woman behind the counter seems mad. I said-- can I have two powdered donuts --she said it's lemon. Didn't put it in the box. Then I had to tell her again the lemon ones . I can't see inside of the donut lady just put it in the box! Having to write this breaks my heart. I was exploring downtown Culpepper, and the initial aroma wafting from this cute, eclectic store front drew me in. After stepping inside, I was greeted by friendly staff who were extremely helpful and chatted with me while I picked out what I thought were going to be some delicious goodies. Being my first time, I got an assortment of pastries, cookies, and an apple pie. I was so excited I could barely wait to get home to spoil my taste buds. And then disappointment set in. The best I can say is that the taste was extremely lacking even comparing the products to store-bought equivalents. It's been a while since I've had a craving for donuts, and the last time I went to Knakal's (2+ years), my memory was great. This time it was not so much the same. The store still looks the same, which is fine, nothing wrong with that. I was greeted by an older lady, and by a small selection of donuts. By the way she answered my questions, it seemed like she didn't want to be there. I got my half dozen, promptly paid, and left. It was a very dense and "please-get-your-order-over-with" environment. As for the donuts, they too were just fine, just a little dry. If I had gone to Lidl as they were making a fresh batch, I feel like I could have gotten the same quality. Cupcakes I would have to get a one star, but the stuffed horns I would give 5 stars. I just wish I had bought more of those and left cupcakes alone! I was disappointed after serving to family and still have 10 left and drove 37 miles to get something there because it was highly recommended. First time there. We do all we can to support small businesses. The two women serving customers were very sweet and polite. I noted that nothing was labeled in the cases. I have no idea what some items were and I didn't want to ask what every single item was. We bought a half dozen butter cookies and spice cookies. I hate to say this but the butter cookies lacked any flavor whatsoever. I don't think there was sugar in them. They were dry and tasteless. The spice cookies were just as flat, dry and such a tremendous disappointment. We asked about the possibility of special treats for the holidays and the questions were met with a struggle of basically saying there really isn't any special treats from them at the holidays. Three occasions I have gone here because people say that the bakery is famous and provides great products. My cousins, little sister, and I are as close as it gets. What is the glue of such a strong relationship, you ask? Knakal's doughnuts. Twice a year (Summer and Christmas) for a decade now, we've reunited at our grandparents' house in Culpepper to swim, watch Shark Tank until 2 am, hike Old Rag, and of course, eat Knakal's doughnuts. Picture this: it's 10:00 am. I awake to the sound of the garage door as my grandpa enters the house with 48 delicious doughnuts. Sweatpants on, I scramble into the kitchen to snag one of these delectable treats. When the chocolate icing hits my tongue, there is not a doubt in my mind that I am glimpsing heaven. The five of us eat 48 doughnuts within 2 days. Two doughnuts for breakfast, an afternoon snack doughnut, one for evening dessert, and one for a midnight snack. In a two week visit, my grandpa buys us 48 doughnuts at least 3 times. Miraculously, we maintain healthy figures, which I accredit to the magic of the doughnut. These doughnuts are so good that my sister and littlest cousin once hid ten of them in their closet to ensure that enough were left over for them. 11/10 would recommend Knakal's doughnuts. (Consider this a 2-1/2 Star review. While 2 of the 4 varieties of pastry we sampled were excellent, the other 2 plus the outrageously lousy customer service were a definite buzzkill.) After reading some recent positive Yelp reviews - particularly that to get the good stuff here one has to be an early bird - we popped over at 7:30 a.m. this past Thurs. (they open at 7 a.m.) to see if a 3rd visit might be a charm. We hadn't been back since our last visit in 2010. There were a couple of people leaving as we entered, but we were then alone with full display cases of the usual sweet cakes & cookies - & doughnuts. Doughnuts still warm from the oven or fryer or whatever. There the fun sort of ended. I hope someone from Knakel's reads these reviews, because they have a REALLY SERIOUS customer service problem. The lone middle-aged woman behind the counter had a puss on her like she'd been sucking lemons for breakfast. Even looking her square in the eye with a big smile on my face had zero effect. I cheerfully pointed at the stuffed doughnuts & asked what they were filled with, but before I even had Word 1 out of my mouth, she had a bag open & started filling it. And what a LOOK I got when I explained that I just wanted to know what the fillings were first - like that was some sort of oddball question since there are no signs or anything descriptive in the doughnut case. She rattled off several fillings so quickly I couldn't catch them, & I was NOT going to ask her to repeat herself. And when I pointed to some Italian pastries (Sfogliatelle) & was about to ask about their filling, all she snapped at me was "Those are $1.35 apiece" - still standing there snapping that paper bag around. Geesh. (Remember - we were the ONLY customers in the store.) I mentioned to her that we were going to buy a selection, & would need a box rather than a bag. Another snap - "How many?". "Eight." She looked pissed that I was correct - that we WOULD need a box. We ended up with 2 jelly doughnuts, 2 glazed doughnut twists, 2 chocolate-glazed doughnuts filled with overly-sweet pastry cream (I thought they were custard-filled, but wasn't in the mood to ask another question of this witch), & 2 of the "$1.35 apiece" Sfogliatelles (also filled with overly-sweet pastry cream). The jelly doughnuts & glazed doughnut twists - still warm - were ethereal. The raspberry jelly filling tasted like real raspberries - very intense - & was still warm inside the doughnuts. The sugar glaze on the glazed doughnut twists was done with a light touch - perfect!! It will be worth risking the wrath of the Knakel Gorgon to enjoy those again. The Sfogliatelle's pastry was soggy & the filling WAY too sweet. Chocolate-glazed - overly sweet in both chocolate & filling. If they offer custard-filled, that I might try. But then I'd have to ask a question - lol! Bill came to $7 & change. Bottom Line: Go early for the warm sugar-glazed & jelly doughnuts; beware of anything with the achingly overly-sweet white pastry cream filling. And, as a few others here have also mentioned - don't expect much in the way of customer service. read more

Every time we go to Culpeper we run into people who tell us to go to Knakal's Bakery on Davis St. Davis St is a very typical modern American nostalgic Main St USA. It has boutique stores, a couple of nice restaurants, a diner, a coffee shop (not Starbucks, thankfully) and other odds and sods. Among these is the much hyped Knakals. How do I put this without sounding as though I love to be miserable, as some guy responded to one of my earlier less than five star reviews? Over hyped is probably the best description. There is nothing particularly special about this bakery except that it is the only bakery on Davis St. Maybe my expectations have been raised too high having lived a significant portion of my life in Europe, where the local bakery is a staple of life in many communities. There, numerous assortments of breads are baked and sold, myriad pastries are available, single baked products are lined up neatly for consumers to buy, and something simple like running an errand or grabbing a quick bite connects you to previous generations. At Knakals, you can buy some ok biscuits, an ok cupcake (that the teller placed in a paper bag so by the time I opened the bag in the car, it was a frosting ringed disaster), some cookies and a cake or other sweet concoction. In truth, most larger grocery stores, ie Wegmans and Whole Foods, have better bakeries offering better baked goods. I'd rather shop at a local place, but if the wares aren't better, why bother? Also, the staff at Knakals were somewhat rude constantly yelling "who's next?" even though there were only four people in the store. It is always busy though, so good for them. I asked around town...as I am new to the area and was told that Knakal's was to die for! So, I was initially surprised that there was no parking....but I found street parking. I entered a tiny....tiny...bakery where people were packed in like sausages waiting. As patrons cleared out and we were the next in line...the cashier proceeded to continue socializing with another customer for minutes on end. Just as I was ready to just leave....she asked if she could help me. I ordered the jelly doughnuts, paid, and got out of there....vowing never to return because of the lack of customer service. However,........the doughnuts absolutely MELTED IN YOUR MOUTH!!!! Dare I say it????? I do believe that they were the best that I have ever had! Hence the 3 stars....the food is delicious....but the service is ABSOLUTELY LOUSY! Will I go back????? Not sure......the verdict is still out.
