Hungry people getting ice cream .

The aroma of waffle cones as you drive by will turn your heart into the parking lot... watch out for the momma and baby cow right by the entrance! Any flavor of ice cream and soft serve perfection. Come hungry, you wont need dinner with cherries on top!

My husband and I loved moo thru! The grilled cheese with tomato was surprisingly good, we would both order it again. Of course their ice cream is also delicious! Service was so so, we had to remind the staff that we ordered food before we received it.

Moo thru is a VA staple! If you're in the Culpeper area, it's a must visit. I've been going here for the last decade or so since my sis moved to VA and I went to school there. I got the cookie butter and my sister got the smores! The cookie butter was OK. Kinda icy and didn't have those warming spices you would expect from a cookie butter flavor. The s'mores was really good, marshmallow ice cream with large chocolate chunks. Waffle cone was great! Expect a wait, it's always busy

THE BIG: Located right off of highway 15, you can't miss this ice cream shoppe! There's always a line out in front and only outdoor seating. Drive thru and walk up available. Parking lot available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I would always drive by here on the way to Charlottesville and back to DC. The line says it all because the ice cream here is delicious! Tons of flavors to choose from. The wife and I always get the mint chip and it is delicious! Instead of thick chips, they are thin chips which adds that nice mouth texture instead of the traditional ice cream mint chocolate chips. Beyond that, the pistachio is also a good choice. It's not colored unnatural green but it does pack a pistachio flavor that will have you coming back for seconds. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Our last purchase was a medium cup with two flavors and it was around $7. Great place to stop to grab a sweet treat before heading to your final destination.

New favorite ice cream in the DMV. Growing up in the Midwest, I'm pretty spooked by ice cream places and have struggled to find one in NoVA. We've passed this place a few times on the way to see friends and decided to drive thru. Ice cream at 11am was worth it for how good this place is. We tried the blackberry and cake batter and plan to go back. The ice cream is smooth and thick, you can tell made with high quality ingredients. It's almost chewy how thick the consistency is. Can't wait to go back, possibly on the drive back home.

After several years, finally writing my review for Moo Thru! From cville to DC and back, Moo Thru is a MUST STOP for ice cream. Their ice cream is creamy, flavorful and absolutely addicting. They have several flavors all the time and rotating seasonal ones. My go to is Mint Chip, but you can't go wrong with cookie dough or pistachio. The line is always long when I go, but it moves quickly. Worth the wait and an opportunity to stretch your legs! There's also plenty of seating around the barn. Highly recommend :)

Have been stopping here for ice cream for years and they exceed expectations every time! The ice cream is always so creamy, thick, and fresh. I especially enjoy the cookie dough, blackberry, and raspberry sorbet, though all the flavors are delicious. The single scoop is pretty sizable. Only outdoor seating and drive through. Bathrooms available. They now sell coffee, which is also tasty!

This place is definitely worth going to if you are in the fence! As a true ice cream girlie, I'm always looking for places to try that have good quality and flavor. A friend recommended the Moo Thru, it was a little out of the way but it looked promising. The drive was beautiful and we ended up here in no time, as it's on the side of the main road. I came here twice, the kids and adults both loved it. The mint and chip and cookie dough were my personal favorites. Peach was my least favorite. We tried a milkshake in coffee flavor it was great too! The price point is good for the ingredients and portions. There is often a line but it moves quickly and the team is friendly. There is seating off to the side and a drive through if you don't want to get out of the car. Can't wait to come back next time I am in the area!

So fresh I swear the cows in the back are turning the ice cream maker with the swish of their tails ! My boyfriend gets excited just knowing he gets to stop for an ice cream & my son keeps hoping he can meet one of the " farmers daughters" ! lol We look forward to sitting at the picnic tables and talking with other travelers. There is usually a long line but it's just super fun, anticipating which flavors you might want to try. Warning though, no indoor seating so you will get cold unless you're there in August, September maybe.

Apple Cider Shake

The only issue I noticed was that the pick up area was very disorganized. People were trying to take orders that did not belong to them because of the confusion. Other than that it was good. Tastes great and relatively quick.

Decided to stop by on a trip back to the NOVA area and boy am I glad I did! Located on the main highway road -- this was packed with both people waiting in line to order and drive through! There's a parking available and some tables to eat at as well. Menu: serves both soft serve and scooped ice cream. They have a pretty larger variety of scooped ice cream to select from with a lot of the star flavors! They also have a season rotation flavors as well. If you're looking for food -- well they have it here as well in addition to coffee! I ordered the Cotten candy and butter pecan small cone. The flavors are on point and really have a really creamy consistency. For ice cream this is one of the top quality ice cream shops I've been too!! I wish I lived closer to be able to come by all the time. I thought for the pricing it was not bad at all. A small scooped cone is around $3 something and they don't skim out on the scoop either. Will definitely stop again next time I'm nearby!

Mint Chocolate Chip on a waffle cone
William Y.

Nice ice cream shop. Very quaint. Good ice cream, very creamy. I ordered two scoops of mint chocolate chip on a waffle cone, and Jan ordered one dip of chocolate, chunky capacinnio in a cup. We also ordered four cinnamon cake donuts. We had the Donuts for breakfast the next day, and they were excellent. Summary: Experience - 4/5. Long ordering line and each of the three items ordered were delivered separately over several minutes. Quality - 5/5 Cost - $$$$ $26 dollars for 3 scoops of ice cream and four cake donuts. That created a wow!

Ask the Community - Moo Thru

Are any of their flavors gluten free?

Many of their flavors are gluten free, they're just not going to promise no cross-contamination. My girlfriend has celiac and has been fine with many of their flavors.

Do they serve food or just ice cream?

They do serve food. For whatever reason, they don't seem to list it on the website, but they do have food...a couple sandwiches, maybe chili...it's a bit random, but they do have real food, too.

Messick's Farm Market - my partner judging my custard choices

Messick's Farm Market

4.1(103 reviews)

There are places you go because you need something, and there are places you go because life is…read morejust better when you do. Messick's falls into that second category. You start out thinking it's just a farm market but inside, the place has all the usual farm market suspects--fresh produce, baked goods, meats--but then you notice the food counter. That's where things go sideways in the best possible way. The sandwiches are flat-out good, not "good for a farm store," but actually good. And the breakfast burritos are not normal human-sized food. They're the kind of burritos that make you reconsider your life choices halfway through eating one, in a positive way. Outside is where Messick's really shows off. Kids running everywhere, farm people doing what farm people do, and enough seasonal activities to keep families occupied until everyone forgets what time it is. It's the kind of place where parents sit down "for just a minute" and then suddenly it's an hour later and nobody is in a hurry to leave. If you're rolling in with a camper, it also works as a Harvest Hosts stop, which is a polite way of saying you can legally fall asleep there without anyone bothering you. Parking is easy in a grass-and-gravel area that's simple to level into, and once the day crowd clears out it gets quiet in that good country way. Verizon signal holds up well too, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on how hard you were trying to escape emails. What makes Messick's dangerous is that it's not trying to be anything other than what it is--but it ends up being more anyway. You go for a quick stop and leave feeling like you accidentally spent the afternoon at somebody's family reunion, except nobody made you help clean up afterward. In a world full of overcomplicated stops and underwhelming food, Messick's is refreshingly simple: good food, good people, and just enough chaos to make it interesting.

Well...one evening we decided to try the custard at both establishments, back to back, and rate them. My girl and I both agreed that the custard at B&L had a better taste and consistency. Certainly a very unofficial test, but both of us were adamant that B&L's custard was superior. So...if you want one of Spelunker's famous burgers and fries, absolutely go there...but stop at B&L for your custard dessert fix. And it is never so incredibly crowded there that you can't get on the lot, as it is at Spelunker's.

They pointed us here just off 522 near the historic district. The parking is a little funky here and hard to describe. I can see chaos ensuing on a typical warm summer evening but we were here well before dusk and the only ones at that. The server was friendly and talkative as we approached the bright white trailer to place our order. We each got a cone, mine vanilla and my wife's swirl. She surprisingly didn't get her's dipped in chocolate. Pro tip: the small size is plenty big for most mortals. Our custard was satisfying and definitely hit the spot. They have some picnic tables and umbrellas to sit and enjoy your frozen delights while people watching others trying to get in and out of the narrow one way parking lot. Lastly, you might need some patience turning left out of there to get back to 522 but after a nice cone or shake you should be plenty chill to make it easy.

One of us ordered a single vanilla on a waffle cone. Dude must have put in extra, because it was HUGE. The triple scoop s'mores frozen custard wasn't so big, but it was creamy and tasty. Burgers and chicken were greasy, not in a good way. Lots of oil at the bottom of the chicken cup. Double Cavern buns were soaked in oil. Other than the oil, the meat was good. Plenty of toppings, even adding a good amount for extra pickles.
