A babbling brook in the back, a delightful square to explore, flowers, fields, breakfast with fresh juice fruit and coffee delivered to our room every morning. Bathing under the stars and sleeping under them too. What an amazing long weekend. Bear our border collie was welcomed with open arms, he was so comfortable the entire stay. He enjoyed the accommodations and romping in the fields (and drinking from the creek, I wouldn't recommend doing that yourself.) Our whole stay was stunning. I truly came in with an open mind and they blew my mind. What a hidden treasure.

The living room had an inviting fireplace and we took the time to even sit on and enjoy the large spacious front porch, even in the cold fall weather. The owner was playing piano when we arrived. Because of covid, there was no breakfast, but we received free breakfast vouchers to Route 66 which is a local restaurant nearby. It is not that far to snowshoe for skiing. It's near cass scenic railroad! We would most definitely stay there again! Highly recommend! Great place and great owners!

This review is written from a dog-owner's perspective…read more Planning to meet up with a local friend, we checked Hilton hotels within a ten mile radius. At $75 this, to our surprise, was the cheapest rate for our doggo. If I didn't have his crate, bed and feeding station -- I said this is from a dog-owner's perspective! -- I wouldn't notice that the room is a bit smaller than other Hampton Inns. The property isn't new, with furniture somewhat dated. (Really 3.5 stars. Certainly not 4.) All I care about is cleanliness, comfort and water pressure, with this hotel meeting my requirements. As you can see in the photo there's a big grassy area where one can walk their dog. And people do! But, despite the convenience of a bag-and-disposal station, some people don't pick up after their four-legged friends, so you have to be careful where you walk! That drives me nuts. The hotel is conveniently situated off the highway and less than ten minutes from downtown Staunton, with its quaint shops and restaurants. There's a nice outdoor pool, currently drained. I'd stay here again.

There are ample staff, and everyone was very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed everything we ate, from the quick serve breakfasts and sandwiches at Martha's cafe, to dinners at Woody's, the breakfast buffet, and the gala dinner. It was always easy to find something to eat or drink, with various levels of service/formality. The gym is well appointed, and we really enjoyed the outdoor pool and hot tub. The afternoon tea and cookies is very crowded, but fun. The evening movie was a fun activity, with popcorn and nice seating . One thing I really liked was the number of occupied public spaces. The lobby/foyer has live music in the evenings, occasional tea and coffee service, couches and fireplaces. The Christmas decorations were just gorgeous. We enjoyed walking around to see them all. We also really liked the vibes in the Presidential Lounge and had drinks there on several occasions, taking our time. We are not fancy people, and did find the hotel rather expensive, and definitely still felt nickeled and dimed at times. There is no included food/beverages, and only part of the complex is available/included in your cost. We were able to use part of the outdoor pool, and the indoor pool and fitness center. The mineral pools, onsite and off, are additional fees, as are all meals, most coffee, etc. Parking is not included, and is valet only. There are numerous daily activities, most of which are an additional charge. Many did look enjoyable, but we opted out of the $75 bourbon tasting and $75 yoga classes. When the Omni is on, they are ON, but, to my point above, once they start to miss, they just kind of shrug it off and the mistakes feel expensive. My date had bought me a massage, which came with a spa day pass, which is the only way to use the spa garden and on site springs. We didn't realize at first that I already had a day pass, so we went ahead and purchased one for him to enjoy the facilities as well. On our spa day, the hot water was out, which meant that a decent number of the indoor facilities were not enjoyable. There were no discounts or alternatives offered, just kind of - it's not working. We still had a very nice spa day, but would have enjoyed the indoor showers, and actually, showering off, in January, in cold water after using the mineral springs, was not fun. When we ordered room service, half of our order was forgotten, and again, we were presented with a brief apology and the full bill, even though it took an additional 20 minutes for the food to arrive and I had finished eating mine by then. The most stressful error was when the bell staff dropped the garment bag containing my black tie dress on the floor in the hall, and we found it there when we came back to the room! I was really upset about that, though we didn't call the desk as we were tired and I did have the dress in the end, but this could have ended quite differently. I will also say that the walls are PAPER thin. A rather loud family occupied the room next to us for part of our stay and we could hear EVERYTHING. The historic property is just lovely, and the service was really nice. If we were to return, we would likely stay for a shorter visit, but it was definitely worth a trip.

It's more of a place where you need an itinerary because there are a lot of activities, which is great, but many of them are on scheduled time slots. So if you wanted to sleep in and go do something later in the morning, like 10:45, you might miss out because a lot of things runs on specific times. Some of the activities also cost extra, so it's definitely important to do your research beforehand and understand exactly what you're booking. Personally, I don't think I would come back again just because it wasn't the right fit for me.

Except in our case....maybe not so wild, just a bit crazy. Truth be told, there was some method to our madness in straying from the beaten path. After a 3000+ mile driving trek across the Southern and Mid-Atlantic states, my wife and I decided to avoid high traffic truck-infested roads on our return home to Middle Tennessee. So we programmed our GPS to use only secondary and tertiary rural roads through Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. What a hoot...what a great trip! At the outset of the trip (and for the record) the Isaac Jackson Hotel isn't exactly off the beaten path, but then again, it doesn't sit right next to a major Interstate. Regardless, it was on our route and it did fit our needs perfectly. Only tiny glitch - again at the outset - was that we overshot the driveway to the hotel. A quick trip around the block and we were back on track. The hotel sits up on a hill overlooking a part of Elkins and the driveway is adjacent to a nice restaurant, the 1863 Grill. You actually have to drive through the parking lot of the 1863 to get to the hotel! Once conquered, the hill proved negligible in our stay, and we quickly settled into a beautiful, comfortable hotel. Nice size room, clean and well-stocked with toiletries, towels and essentials. Great shower with detachable hand wand. Clean and neat accommodations. After a comfortable night, a notable moment: breakfast. Attention to detail! The breakfast lounge is spacious and spread out over a beautifully decorated lobby that includes traditional table and chair sitting areas, a larger family-size or conference table, and a cozy fireside sitting area with overstuffed chairs. The selections include standard "free hot breakfast items" along with some locally prepared specials. The egg and cheese omelet is plain but can be enhanced with the addition of sausage or you might add one of the small containers of Tostito Salsa and make it a Southwest style omelet. Add a side of locally prepared stewed apples (or use them to top your "make your own" fresh waffle. If you lean more toward a simple bagel or English muffin with jelly, pick one of several individually wrapped (yes, personally wrapped for freshness and to keep wayward, clumsy fingers off). Cold cereal, fresh juices, hot freshly brewed coffee or tea, or a glass of Vita water...the selection is amazing. But wait...there's just a bit more. How about some freshly cut fruit or...on this morning, famous fresh 1863 Grill Cinnamon buns....Oh, so, sweet! And a real Roadtrip delight only slightly off the beaten path.
