Now this is a unique "park" where it's not easy just to find where the trail begins. BUT once we…read morelearned why it's called 'Explore' Park, our first visit here became absolutely engrossing. After turning into Roanoke River Parkway from Blue Ridge Parkway, drive past several lookouts and the park entrance. Keep driving past Arthur Taubman Center on your left and down a gravel road where you'll eventually find the parking lot for the 'explore' part of this park. At least two entrances exist, and it doesn't matter which one you start on since the trails meet, crisscross, and loop. Just watch out for signs along the way. I like that it's a trail in a natural setting with lots of trees, but what really makes this park unique is the endless stone and wood structures and buildings you come across randomly throughout the trail. It was actually so bizarre and mysterious that I didn't even think to take any pictures. There's a house that used to be a family home but is now empty, and you can take a peek inside since all the structures are inaccessible to visitors. We came on a weekday, and the only other people we saw were kids in the parking lot and a person walking their dog. Okay, slightly spooky this place, but I wouldn't want it any other way...well, maybe if we could walk inside the buildings it'd be even more fun.

Each tent site had a level pad, picnic table and fire ring. it is right off I-81 so traffic noise at night is bothersome. in a camper it would probably not be nearly as noticeable. At the entrance you are greeted and checked in. Don't even have to exit your vehicle. there is a camp store which we did not used but looked nice. RV's are guided by an employee to their site which is very nice. The laundry and bathroom/shower facilities were the best i have seen at any campground. The grounds were well maintained and the lots were easy to get in and out of. while we were there we saw numerous employees cleaning the grounds and picking up trash. It is a KOA so is not a destination in and of itself but it is a nice place to stop for a night or two and explore the area. Natural Bridge and Lexington are well worth a few days of exploring.

And that was exactly what I did afterwards. A few marathon runners joined me after and told me how the place is owned by a gentleman name Ray, and his daughter has a house right next to the store. Such a cute town with hospitable people. The ice cream is delicious!!! There's a huge selection of premium ice cream flavor. I couldn't decide because they all sounded amazing. But asking for recommendations and trying the samples were what saved me. I got the cappuccino with chocolate crunk, based on the recommendation of Ray's daughter. The ice cream here is the perfect remedy for post-race or post-hike. You won't be disappointed!

Coming from out of town for the weekend, my comrades and I were looking to go camping for the 4th of July- and with the closest state park booked, this was a close alternative to our ideal location. Not only did we find the prices very fair, but our tent campsite was ideal! The Buckhorne is a great place to tent camp. They have spaces that have fire pits and tables - you pay a tad extra for electric hookups (but we didn't need them). They have ample parking and their shower/bathroom facilities are clean and bug-free! In addition to RV camp sites, they have a great on-site store you can utilize if you forgot a few essentials. It has the local ice cream shop and DVD/VHS rentals as well as well seasoned firewood for sale. Tons of space to allow guests to come and go. This place is family owned and the family that owns it is just the most friendliest people you will meet. They always great you as if you were friends for ages and are always willing to help you out with any questions you have. They do allow their family cats to roam freely but they won't wander to your campsite unless invited - no worries, they are super friendly! And, if you are lucky, you may see the campsite owl that lives nearby - a mascot of sorts that is as talkative as she is beautiful! I would def recommend anyone in the Clifton Forge area to stop on in for a snack or ice cream treat at least. These people are what hospitality is truly about and they are the sweetest family you will meet. If you are planning on staying, do inquire about check in hours, as they do change day to day.

While filled with RV's there are barely ANY people around. Which leaves the things that are open looking like a wasteland. Half of the lots don't have power, roads are VERY wonky. The "beach" is always empty, and the borders for where you can and can't swim aren't even complete. Horrible service throughout the campground, with only one building providing wifi and it honestly looks like it's for, despite being called the "activity building" there's three functioning rooms, a big empty room with few tables and a ping pong table with no paddles and a ball, aswell as a lounge with a tv that would be nice if it wasn't so dirty.

Those sites are not open. The wide range of open sites include pull through and back in with full hook ups. I drove through three loops (a, b, and c) and loop c had 50 amp electrical hook ups. The pool was very clean. The office/laundry/recreational room was very clean. You could smell fresh laundry as you walk in. The beach was clean but has area of erosion. The landscaping in the campground is great. All the grass is cut and maintained. The playground was clean and greatly maintained. Overall, my family and I had a great experience here at Lynchburg RV Resort.

A little late in posting our review. My husband and I booked over the Fourth of July holiday…read moreweekend. We traveled over 24 hours straight through from Austin, Texas. Needless to say, we were exhausted. Luckily, my husband I took turns driving to ensure the we get some rest. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Camp host and fellow team members. It was refreshing to receive such welcoming smiles. She gave us our directions and camp map and informed us of some of the festivities going on. Entering the park, I would say was a bit confusing with the routes since golf carts were all over the place entering and exiting all the roads although it stated one way. We were tired so we didn't think nothing of it. We just wanted to unhook and get some much needed rest and sleep. Service: Impeccable! Very friendly, ensured we were greeted and taken care of. It was amazing to see how much they got together to ensure everyone stayed cooled after the electricity went down. Our neighbors ensure they contacted the office so that we can get informed because our pets were in the RV. They immediately contacted us so that we can get home to take care of our pets. We were grateful because we were an hour out of the way to get home quickly. By the time we got to our site, it wasn't too hot in the RV and the electric came back on. Thanks to our neighbors and the quick response to notify us. Amenities: clean Location: We were there to see our seventh grandchild. They lived about 35-45 minutes further from the Shenandoah Retreats. It was what we could get on availability due to the July 4th holiday. But it was easy to get to once we figured out the back roads. Sites: Were pretty tight, over populated but we understood since it is a destination retreat. We are long term residents in another Sun Communities location and you can say it is about the same as far as site space is concerned. It is fair to say we were right on top of our neighbors. I felt bad because they were cooking outside and my sewer hose is right there. We didn't get a room so I cannot comment on them, I stay natural. Bright Spots: I give the activities director kudos for the highlights of having festivities. They had golf cart and bicycle parades, golf cart water gun shoot outs. Lookout you must have a sign on your person or site that says "No water zone." It looked fun. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. We hope to may another trip to see our families and we hope to stay there a little longer to enjoy the amenities we couldn't get to because of time. Way to go Shenandoah Retreats. Keep up the great work and smiles.
