As a dad, planning this kind of trip comes with a lot of moving parts... and a little bit of overthinking. Thankfully, Twin River Outfitters made it all easy. Robert gave us a great orientation and walked us through the whole course like seasoned river guides (which we definitely are not). We booked the glamping tents and took full advantage of their kitchen box, firewood, and luggage service--which meant we could have an awesome adventure without needing a crash course in ultralight backpacking. It was a perfect balance of the outdoors and just enough comfort to keep everyone smiling.

The campground is rustic, and tucked away into a forest. It is far away from any freeway or…read morecivilization and is peacefully quiet. There is no ambient light here so the stars put on quite a show each evening. Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table. All spaces are graveled drives. It does have a swimming pool, a catch and release pond a swimming pond and a creek running through the property. It also has a general store selling high priced items like sodas, beer, ice cream, hamburgers, canned goods and kitsch. It is situated next to Jefferson State Park, accessed by a 1.5 mile narrow (barely two-lane) road. We were assigned to a shady pull through with water and electric. However no WiFi , no TV reception and no cable. The bathhouses and showers are tired and need some help. The toilets themselves are clean, but the floor is unfinished cement, painting is definitely needed, one of the three showers had no shower head, only a pipe, and the grout in the ceramic tiles on the walls and floors were dirty. Quite a few full time RVers have made this their permanent home. So far, the only bugs we've encountered are gnats and bees. No mosquitoes which is a good thing. Lots of hummingbirds as well.

What was especially great was that the boat slips were covered. The only problem was that sone of the slips closer to the shore were extremely shallow but we parked our boat in a shallow spot (3ft) and we were fine but this is probably not going to be a problem for you because the lake was lowered by 2ft because there was a hurricane going up the coast and the mild thunderstorms that would reach the lake would probably flood it. Other than that the campsite was wonderful and I enjoyed my stay.

The lake was perfect for swimming in: great temperature, clean, and a lot of grassy shore space along the side. There was large grass areas where one could play frisbee or do other outdoor games. The campground is well-maintained, clean, and has a number of amenities that make camping convenient. Campers have access to flush toilets as well as showers. The facilities aren't particularly fancy but it's camping -- if you wanted fancy, you should stay indoors :) Prices were reasonable as well. $15 a night for a single site. Single site campsites come with a large parking space, a picnic table, and a firepit. Most of the spots are well shaded, and there is easily enough space for a large family tent or a few smaller tents. The campground has access to a number of trail heads and within a short driving distance, even more trails are available. Some trails are short and suitable for beginning hikers, others more challenging with steep inclines and a number of switchbacks up the mountain. Some are also perfect for day hikes as well. Located nearby is the Appalachian Trail as well as the James River (one can rent kayaks, canoes, etc.). The campground is nearby to Natural Bridge, VA -- which has a large natural bridge one can pay to see -- and Lexington, VA -- which has a cute downtown area to walk through and some nice restaurants to eat at.

The drive over to the start of our day trip was pleasant in an air conditioned van and the guide driving us pointed out baby deer and an eagle's nest which was awesome. The canoeing day itself was beautiful and the trip was just the right length for us. There were four adults in our group-- I think with kids you would want to ask for a closer drop off point because it was a LOT of paddling. The canoes were nice and they helped us carry them down to the launch point and gave us a run down of the rapids we would pass which was helpful to avoid overly shallow or rocky areas. We were the only ones canoeing that day which was so nice! I would love to do this again in the fall when the leaves are changing!

There is ample shade so during the hot summer months, you're sheltered from the sun. We camped right on the water at Campsite 6 hearing the river as we slept. We could have camped up a bit as the site is large. We could swim from the site. Floating down the James River rafting was super beautiful and relaxing. Any age can do this really. Story: I was playing on one of the jumping pillows. When suddenly these 6 big kids came up, and bounced us. I was fine with it, same with my new friend. When they asked us if they wanted to bounce us. So we said sure. So they did a big bounce. Me and him got flung out. He only hurt his back a little, but I couldn't breathe and my chest was badly hurt (which was how that bump came) and I was crying a lot. So yeah. Our dogs loved exploring the fields and beautiful trails with us. The creek sounds lulled us to sleep and what I really loved was the trees shading us from morning sunlight so my early riser child didn't feel the need to wake me up at 5:30 in the morning to go on another adventure. The sites are spacious with a fire pit and picnic table. Overall, it was a great night!

Each tent site had a level pad, picnic table and fire ring. it is right off I-81 so traffic noise at night is bothersome. in a camper it would probably not be nearly as noticeable. At the entrance you are greeted and checked in. Don't even have to exit your vehicle. there is a camp store which we did not used but looked nice. RV's are guided by an employee to their site which is very nice. The laundry and bathroom/shower facilities were the best i have seen at any campground. The grounds were well maintained and the lots were easy to get in and out of. while we were there we saw numerous employees cleaning the grounds and picking up trash. It is a KOA so is not a destination in and of itself but it is a nice place to stop for a night or two and explore the area. Natural Bridge and Lexington are well worth a few days of exploring.

I did not camp here nor stay in a cabin, so those are things on which I cannot comment. For mountain biking, it's mostly very good-quality and well-maintained single-track but with few man-made features (but some!). It's fun, challenging, and a good deal of uphill. For free, you cannot really ask for more. For hiking and trail running, it's also a first-rate experience: a beautiful, scenic, park and a lot of good trails. The staff I encountered were very friendly and helpful, as well.

Some highlights: Delivery of wood for the campfire/fireplace. Bathroom was spotless. All towels and linens were clean and fresh. Super pleasant folks working for the state forest. Almost everything in the cabin that could be was also local/made in WV. Quiet. Remote. Honestly, I can't say enough good things. I had the most relaxing three days here. In no way is this "roughing it." I look forward to when I return again.
