Get the Desperado with Salsalito Turkey. It's seriously the best sandwich ever.

Montrose Spa is a nice little convenience store with pretty good sandwiches, but there is one caveat with their establishment. They have probably the slowest sandwiches ever!!! They grill most of the special sandwiches on their menu, and they only have a small sandwich press, so make sure you call your order in (instead of trying to walk in and wait for your sandwich). I'm never shopping here again. I went in to get stamps, and I asked, "do you have stamps?" The woman at the counter said, "sure, do you want 10?" I said "yes." She rings it up for $12. I thought, "gee that sounds high" but I know the postal service keeps raising prices, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt. But when I got home I realized she had sold them to me at 2.5 times the cost! It was my own damn fault for not knowing the current price of a stamp, but I'll never shop again at a place that rips off their customers like that. Shame on you montrose spa - and I used to like your sandwiches, too. No more. I'm so disappointed. read more

I have not eaten here yet, I will make sure to update my rating when I do. This review is based solely on Montrose Spa's capacity as a convenience store. This place never fails to amaze me. It is tiny, yet somehow it always has what I am looking for. I live close by, so I will often stop in for something important, (TP for example) and figure that the rest of the things on my shopping list can wait until I have the time to head to Shaws. But then I will walk through the store and realize that everything I need is there! They even carry my favorite mustard (Honey Cup, a must have for sandwich fans), and lactose free milk! Many grocery stores that I have been to do not have Honey Cup mustard and lactose free milk! So, although this place is a bit pricey, it is super convenient, and it has just about anything that you could ever need. Plus, the women behind the counter are always friendly and smiling, which is nice. read more

I absolutely love the breakfast sandwiches in Montrose Spa. They are reasonably priced and always delicious. Their sandwich menu looks great too, but I've never had one. I also sometimes buy groceries there when I am in a pinch and can't make it to a full grocery store. The grocery prices certainly aren't cheap but they are what you'd expect from small market. read more

While the pressed tuna melts are good, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come here for just the sandwiches... it's the ever-rotating selection of weird junk food and sodas packed in along with the Doritos and cat food. Admittedly, you expect pomegranate soda and key lime chocolates in Cambridge, but not usually in grungy corner delis or at reasonable prices. read more

After scoping out every sandwich joint in the area, I realized Montrose had the best deals. Their pressed veggie sandwiches are delicious and cheap. I don't work around there anymore but if I'm ever in harvard square and want a sandwich I'm going back. read more

I used to go to this place all the time when I lived a 2 minute walk away. They have pretty much anything you need in a pinch...bread, jelly, fuses for the 200 year old apartments, brownies, coffee, toothpaste. They even had my coffee creamer that the Evergood down the street didn't. So I always cleaned them out of their Coffeemate French vanilla. They have good cuban sandwiches too. This was my introduction to a "spa" being a new england convenience store. Who would've thunk? read more

Terrible. Sandwiches not worth eating. One time I bit into a lox and bagel and just threw it out. It may have only been $2, but I'd rather pay $7 for the real thing. People who think these sandwiches are great must be deluded by the price. read more

my Cuban friend said her parents had recommended this - and oh yes, they really do make a good cuban sandwich. a plus, there was no grease factor whatsoever. i'll stop in to try their other pressed sandwiches, probably the next time i'm hung over. ps - call ahead, no waiting - yum. read more

Montrose is completely awesome. Toasted vegetarian subs for under 4 bucks, Mexican Coke with real sugar, various sides to go along with them, and even cheapish flowers for when you want to score points with your significant other. If you're nearby, there's no better cheap place to get your lunch. read more

This is a great little store! I love the owners and employees. My only complaint is that the fruit and vegetables seem to be past their prime when I'm there. They fit great chocolate, teas and cheeses in their little place, and they also sell beautiful fresh flowers every day. read more

If you need some necessities for the evening/ day it's a close by place to go. The prices are pretty high but I've been ripped off far worse by other places. Great aspect- the make breakfast and deli sandwiches!!! SO good!!! The staff is usually pretty pleasant. Seems as though the staff will close down the deli whenever they feel like it. I've called 3x well before they have said the deli closes and have gotten a no. Make up your mind Montarose! read more

Solid deli. Big, delicious sandwiches -- the Cuban is fantastic. A little cramped, but you could conceivably use this as your go-to grocery/general store and pretty much get by. Their biggest problem is throughput: get here at the wrong time and your order could take half an hour, so try to avoid coming in around noon. This is actually one of the good takeout lunch places in an area that could use some more, so definitely put it on your radar if you live or work around here. read more

Great tasting sandwiches at good prices. Nothing fancy, just deli meat and some good toppings, but completely delicious. And if you need garbage bags or an avocado while you're waiting for your sandwich you can get that too. read more

This four star review is 10years old, but I used to go here every day after school, me and my friend would buy a box of swiss cake rolls, and walk around the Cambridge common eating the hydrogenated delights. Sounds like something out of Huck Finn! I used to love the pressed Cubano sandwich, and the owners were the nicest guys in the world, like I said, It's been maybe 10 years since I have been here, but, it has a very special place in my heart, and I just couldn't see the overall reviews be only one star. I don't know if they still do, but they used to have the best selection of specialty cigarettes in town that wasn't strictly a tobacco store. They used to donate food to my local public school fair every year.....like i said....nice guys.....7-11 has never done anything for anyone.... read more

This is a convenient place to buy some soda and chips, and their sandwiches are fine. The store is too narrow and feels a little dirty (perhaps because it hasn't been remodeled in a while), but they carry a lot of breakfast basics: eggs, milk, orange juice, and bacon. Their very limited produce section is very bad: the fruits and vegetables often look weathered and well past their peak of freshness. The sandwiches aren't fantastic, but given that this is one of the few quick lunch places in the area, they're serviceable. read more

I'm not sure why this is rated as a one $, because you are paying a little more for the convenience, but, boy, these sandwiches are great. And if you are living in the area, it is very convenient to grab something without having to drive to a regular grocery store. "BEST AUTENTIC CUBAN SANDWICHES IN THE AREA"! this is a mom and pop convenience store between Harvard and Porter that makes pressed sandwiches. You can not sit down to eat here- but in good weather you can walk to Cambridge Commons and eat your "masterpiece". The owner is cuban and surely knows how to make this well priced, large, beautiful, rustic sandwich. I dont know the other sandwiches off the menu- what for? I got my "CUBANO"! It's all I need. this place is right near my work and my absolute favorite place to snag a sandwich. the cuban is awesome, as is the BBQ chix BLT, but they will make anything for you. a regular BLT is only like $4! they have an insane beverage selection too, and a ton of ice cream and chips. good brownies and baked goods at the counter as well. basically this place is awesome and if you don't mind waiting for a few minutes in a cramped space, you'll be rewarded with an off-the-hook sando! This is an excellent little shop, with all sorts of groceries packed into a small space. They have a great selection of staples, like cereals, beverages, and produce, as well as a range of goods that are missing from many bodegas, like flowers, fine chocolates, and kitchen supplies (e.g., coffee filters). They have good hours, too. Also, the shop includes a deli, but I can't comment on the quality of the food because I have only shopped here for groceries. The only thing to watch out for here is that the produce and bread can sometimes be on the verge of going bad, so check for ripeness/"best-by" date. read more

I used to live near Porter Sq. and would walk by Montrose Spa every day on my way home. It was my favorite place for sandwiches, grocery shopping, pretty much everything. And like the other posters, it was my introduction to the NE usage of "spa". I still wear my Montrose Spa t-shirt to the gym 15 years later! read more

I stopped in there for my first time this morning. A pleasing alternative to franchise eateries. I was very satisfied w/ my bagel/lox/cream cheese - nicely prepared, less $$ than I would have figured. My wife had an excellent ham and cheese crescent. Good old fashioned ambience. read more
