I am shocked at the low star ratings. I adopted an amazing dog from MCAS. She did have kennel cough, but I took her to my Vet and we got her well, plus we needed to get established with a Vet and pick flea/heart worm medication. The adoption fees are low so an adopter can take animals to their own Vet. Some people cannot take of one pet, so if are caring for 400 it is a major task! So did those who did not like the smell or thin dogs offer to donate food or sign on as a volunteer to help keep the place clean. No, I don't think so. I have seen injured animals, but I take them to the nearest Vet for help. Most likely the Vet may know the animal and can contact the owner. If you are bringing animals in, oftentimes they are your animal. You definitely don't get to complain! Like I said, they need volunteers, so put your boots on and help or donate! read more

This is a No-Kill shelter. I had a very positive experience. They keep mother cats with their kittens until the kittens are fully weaned and ready for adoption. Their staff does an amazing job caring for the animals and the facility. Every time I've visited, this shelter has been full of people looking to adopt. Please don't hesitate to take lost, unwanted, or stray cats and kittens to this shelter. It's one of the most humane and kind things you can do for cats, kittens and dogs in need of care and safe placement. The front office staff was friendly, polite and welcoming and the adoption process was easy, and surprisingly fast. Every time I've visited, this shelter has been full of people adopting pets, especially kittens, which was really encouraging to see. Their animals are well cared for, and it's clear the staff works hard to find safe, loving homes. I highly recommend this place. read more

Please go save those babies. They treat them horribly and they're all underfed. I've rescued two dogs from there. One had kennel cough so bad I had to spend $400 to fix it. I went in there the other day and just wanted to cry. It was filthy. Feces all over the floor and many pens had three dogs. Many of the dog beds were chewed up and had holes where the dogs would normally lay. They need to do some serious fundraising and throw it out there to the public showing them exactly what they're up against. I would not trust adopting a dog from here for fear of disease. Never again will I go to Montgomery county Animal Shelter. Found injured husky laying in middle of road. With help from another person who stopped was able to get him in back of by small cat. His leg is isn't broke but is tender as he winces. I thought shelters were there to help NO. Was headed out of town because have my son's pets to look after. I already have 2 pups. If I could give zero stars I would. Please please please don't adopt puppies from here. I adopted a puppy named Neo from here last Saturday. Reviewed his medical chart before bringing him home and it said he was treated for coccidia and upper respiratory infection that one of his litter mates had but not him. Sunday and Monday went fantastic with him and then Tuesday took a turn for the worst. I woke up there was three spots of vomit and extreme diarrhea in his crate. Ended up taking him to Petco's vet and he tested strong for parvovirus. I called the shelter the next day and they told me to bring him to the sick clinic. When I arrived there They basically told me that they would only give me a couple of medication to take home and the only way they would help him by hospitalization is if I re-surrendered him. After looking over the contract, I signed for adoption nowhere in the contract Does it state that you have to re-surrender the pet to treat a virus like parvo, in fact, it actually says that if it's within 10 days of your adoption date that they are responsible for the veterinary care. when I told them that I did not want to surrender him, they basically told me that I was on my own and that it was my financial responsibility. I ended up doing at home treatments with him for two days and things kept getting worse so I took him into emergency services where they then informed me that he also has hookworms. so I do know that on the contract it states that they cannot guarantee the health of the animal but when the records for the animal state that they dewormed him twice and did a fecal test how did they not see the hookworms and or parvovirus? Not to mention the thousands of dollars that I have now had to spend because Montgomery County is refusing to help even though they adopted out a sick animal and in the contract it states that they are responsible for it if it's within the 10 days which it was well within the 10 days. Neo also was in the crate with two of his litter mates so by the looks of it those two also should have parvovirus and hook worms. I tried to inform the shelter of his diagnosis and they said that they would let the adopters know and I'm honestly not sure if they did. In the shelter parvo virus is spreading like crazy, probably because the only sanitation that they have you do between picking up other puppies is hands sanitizer, which, in fact, does not kill parvovirus. Not to mention, hookworms are contagious to humans and dogs and I have four other dogs and I am pregnant. These dogs at the shelter just sit in their own feces give each other diseases and they do practically nothing about it except euthanize and it's just very sad. They offer little to no help and their contract only saves their asses. They don't really care about the pets. read more

Tacky behavior from the staff. I adopted a dog that I had to unfortunately had to return to the shelter due to things not working out. As I was explaining to the front desk girl the situation, one of the employees came up and ask me the situation. When I explained the situation (him growling, being stubborn) a new volunteer asked me if he was afraid of men. Before I could answer the woman said "no no no that's not the case. New enviroment and not given a chance" this woman proceeded to mock my situation while I was standing there. She literally kept saying "oh look another male. He's not scared" I almost snapped and asked the bi..woman "then why don't you adopt him yourself" The dog wasn't a bad dog. This was a situation where a 70 pound dog was In a tiny home and refused to let anyone take him out but me which caused issues when it came to me having to leave the home. The dog is a wonder dog who deserved a big backyard. It broke my heart giving that dog back. I cried cause he was my buddy but the situation wasn't right for any of us. The front girls were understanding, hell I was going to ask about the exchange program and adopt another animal where I thought would be better suited for my home(smaller size dog) but this lady purposely mocking me and putting me down I didn't have the heart to go and find another dog. Now I'm at home without an ESA. Shouldn't shelter staff be understanding and want a dog to be put in a home that works for everyone? I tried to bring a stray dog here that I found literally right outside their office and I came at 4:00pm on Saturday and they don't close until 5:00pm and they told me I have to wait and bring it back on Tuesday because they are about to close. (Even though they don't close for another hour) I told them I am leaving out of town tomorrow afternoon and they still wouldn't take it because "they are about to close"..... they might as well close at 4:00pm if they aren't going to work until 5pm. I told her I can't take the dog because I won't be able to take care of it until then and she literally advised me to put the dog back on the road where I found it....... Who does that?!?! Avoid at all costs. Go to Harris county pets instead! Some of the volunteers do care about the animals, but the actual employees are some of the most unpleasant and miserable people I have truly ever encountered. I've been to a lot of county shelters so I knew to keep my expectations low but this is a new low bar none. All shelters tend to be dirty and smell, but the amount of filth, sick dogs being sheltered with healthy dogs, so so many sick dogs! We came here to foster a dog. The woman in charge of fostering seriously seemed like she didn't care about getting dogs fostered. The dog we were interested in had two obvious medical issues which we brought up to the adoption person and to the front desk. No one cared. No intent to address the issues and refused to give her an X-ray. They then decided to ship this dog to an event knowing that she has serious medical issues that were left untreated. I can't express just how unpleasant the front desk girls were. Exceptionally rude. If you hate you job that much and you don't actually care about the animals there are so many other places you could find employment. (We visited multiple times and the experience was the same every single time). We ended up not fostering here after the bad experience. Instead I drove an hour away to Harris county pets and it was a night and day experience!! Going there was the best thing I could have done. We ended up fostering a dog there and we could not be happier with our experience. The facilities are significantly cleaner than MCAS. The employees are very kind and helpful. And you can tell they actually care about their animals. It is worth the drive!!!! The foster department is fantastic and was beyond accommodating and helpful every step of the way. Went out of their way to provide everything need. Go there and skip this disaster of a shelter. read more

Reading these comment kind of scared me I was worried, however after going there for myself I realize that everyone has an opinion about everything...Montgomery Shelter is short staffed and also has a lot on their plate and I see them doing the best they can and they do. When I went there was a George R. Brown convention center adoption fair going on so there were only about 20 or so none of them able to be taken just yet I spent about 2 hours there playing and walking the animals they all seemed loved and happy but ready to get out of there! They staff was super helpful they weren't hands on so that you can interact with your animals. This place is one of the worst animal shelters I've ever been to. Staff at these places are always consisted of "volunteers" that think they're all half way between Cesar Millan and qualified Veterinary specialists, but this place is exceptionally bad on this front. Some fast, ugly woman actually refused to let me walk a dog, after I'd already spoken with the front office, so we just left. Some people like animals but aren't cut out to handle animals that aren't fully domesticated. Just because you suck, doesn't mean I do, just because someone else had a problem, doesn't mean I would have. At the least, I deserved the right to decide that for myself, and that dog deserved any serious consideration he was going to get. Again, this place sucks. read more

We came here to adopt a dog, and my kids of course were immediately drawn to the shabbiest looking one. After we adopted her, we found out she was already chipped and they were contacting the original owners to see if they wanted her back. I thought that was awesome, as I hope to be notified in the same situation. Long story short we got her after all, and look how happy and healthy she is now. Just a few trips to the vet, and her hair loss and skin issues are completely gone (it was due to stress). The caretakers in the kennel and the clinic next door were familiar with her habits and were so excited that she got adopted. I had found 3 German Shepard puppies! I called Montgomery shelter to make a appointment to get the puppies into the shelter bc I can't keep them. The lady was really nice and made the appointment for today at 1:40! When 1:40 came around they proceeded to tell me that due to the location of where I found the puppies they cannot take them. This was after the fact I had told them at 11:30 AM where I found them and I filled out the forms for each puppy. They then proceeded to give me information for another shelter. As I called the other shelter they told me they stopped taking dogs in at 1 pm and won't be taking in any animals til Wednesday . My frustration lies with the fact that Montgomery animal shelter knowingly knew the location of where I found them and had me fill out all these forms at 11:30 am and made me an appointment at 1:40 to drop off the puppies. I have never had a bad experience at Montgomery animal shelter 2 of my dogs are from this shelter! But I was very frustrated with them and how they did not let me know until my appointment that they cannot take them due to where I found them. From what I have gathered animal control organization are required to take in strays or owner surrenders and they often have a "dog catcher" that is dispatched for animal complaints. Well let me just say that now I see why so many people are dumping their unwanted animals all over Montgomery county. My mom had found 8 puppies in an empty lot next to her home. When I made an appointment to bring them in my appointment was never verified which means it was never allowed. I did this for about 2 weeks. Finally I had to get my sister to take them to the shelter closer to her home. Then not long after all this one of my neighbors called and made up some crazy story about my dog getting out and ripping a cat to shreds before attacking her puppy and biting her. What is crazy is my dog has never been out of my husband or my sight. If you could find another place I would highly suggest that. I've adopted several pets from here, and used their vet services and haven't had any real issues. Trying to get anyone to answer the phone is another story. They don't answer the phone. I was trying to get a hold of someone to ask if they'd give the dog I adopted a bath before her spay surgery, as she was very dirty and came in as a stray. Since no one answered I drove up there. The lady at the counter was cold and spoke the absolute bare minimum to me. She said if I wanted to wash the dog I could do it myself. Fine by me! The volunteer that helped me collect my dog from the kennel was much more friendly. She showed me where the outdoor wash station and all the supplies are kept. After a good washing and a long play session, Nova felt like a million bucks. I was sad to leave her again but only had to wait til the following day for her spay to be completed. I took her to our personal vet within a couple days of picking her up and the vet commented on how great the incision area looked. She was very pleased with the size and condition of the surgical area. Other than needing to put on some weight, we haven't had any issues with the dog we adopted. She's a good girl! read more

I would always recommend to adopt a pet to take out of a HORRIBLE situation like this but this place is an absolute DIGRACE. I went into the animal shelter and my heart broke from seeing the faces of these depressed animals! They have big dogs that are negative for heart works kept in kennels with dogs that test positive! You look on the kennels and it says they are to be walked on Tuesday! As if one walk a week is a good enough upkeep to allow the dogs to have exercise. We adopted a 4 month year old pup and when we wanted to adopt her they said we cannot take her home today because THEY made the decision she HAD to be spayed before adoption. The following day, we picked her up after surgery to take her home FOR THE FIRST TIME, how unfair is that! To put a pup through surgery then allow them to go into a brand new environment probably excited and is finding new smells. Then on TOP of that, THEY DID NOT GIVE HER A BATH BEFORE SURGERY. When I got into the car I noticed hard, stale, poop all over her behind! And we could not bathe her due to the fact she just had got spaded! What a nightmare! They also told me to take her back in 3 weeks to get her booster shot. We took her on one of the days listed when she was able to get her vaccination, and then was told the clinic was not doing vaccinations because the wellness clinic is closed! So we scheduled an appointment for her to get her booster shot that was only supposed to cost 15 dollars through the clinic but now is costing 130 due to poor communication they give us on all of our adoption papers! HORRIBLE. I would never recommend this but I would always say to adopt an animal to get them out of these disgusting conditions they let their animals live in. This place needs to be shut down immediately or taken over by a management team that actually wants to give pets a second chance. read more

Please Adopt Me! I think are the thoughts of every dog and cat here at MCAS. I wanted Foxy my Pomeranian to have a little friend. So I went down to Pets Fair in The Woodlands Mall and purchased the sweetest, littlest AKC Shiba Inu they had. I know they can be headstrong and wanted a small one to be able to handle. She was $1000 plus tax and misc. I noticed when she ate her 4 legs would slide apart on the tile. I took her to my miracle vet and her patellas were all level 3&4. Very serious! She would be unable to hold herself up without expensive surgery on every knee. Plus she had a defective vena cava shunt. She would die by 6 months of age. I sadly returned her and received a refund. Two days later she was on sale for $799. I was horrified! She needed to be put to sleep and not break another owner's heart since death was imminent within 3 months. So I went to Montgomery County Animal Shelter. I knew two volunteers. One took me through the different rooms including the death row room. These are the dogs that have been there longer and could be euthanized at any time especially because the shelter was way over capacity. I walked through every room. Almost every dog threw itself at their front cage door to get noticed. The sweeties were so desperate. I never had been to a big shelter. It made me fearful but also sad for the big guys. I went to the small dog room. There was even more sense of desperation as the lil dogs also threw themselves at their cage doors, started climbing them and barking so loud as to let the world know I want out. Their barks were so hysterical and desperate. Honestly I feel sad to say I couldn't take it. So I went back to the bigger dog section and found a very submissive mellow female lab mix. I took her for a trial walk. I swear she peed for 5 minutes straight. I was wondering how she could hold that much. Anyway she was smaller for her size, 38 lbs at approximately 2 yrs. She had recently had babies by looking at her. I left to think about a bigger dog and came back the following Monday. She actual could of been euthanized. I came to see if she was still alive. She was in her cage still and remembered me but was still mellow. I waited in line, booked her spaying (which the shelter person gave me the wrong date) paid her fees (all her shots were already none when she arrived). I immediately drove far to my miracle vet. It was obvious she had been abused by a man with a strong East TX accent. Her x-rays detected a bullet in her. Luckily it was in a safe place so we didn't have to remove it. Happy to say she's been the perfect mellow sweet dog. She's gained weight and is a perfect 54lbs now for her size. If you're one of those people who want to b*tch about the shelter, I suggest you go to one of the volunteer training classes. You can choose to volunteer as often as you want. You can can choose the cute cat room or walk the dogs so they don't have to pee for 5 minutes straight! Nothing is perfect with every stray and some have to be put down due to aggression beyond what an average person can deal with. Yeah I hate those stories also but I'm not one of the professional vets assessing them trying to keep them alive if at all possible. Some have just been too damaged before they arrived. PS: They are always taking donations of food, bedding etc.. MCAS is also on Facebook so you can check the current cats and dogs and daily new ones. Please, Please consider volunteering! It will so help the precious lives of the furry ones mental state to get a walk outside with fresh air and human companionship till they're adopted. Plus possibly save them from bladder and kidney issues from holding their pee for so long. Remember they're man's best friend and probably women's also with their unconditional love they give. We adopted our puppy from here and for handling hundreds of animals at a time I was impressed with the entire process. They work hard to keep the kennels clean, and the animals happy. They even have music therapists come and sit in the dog rooms to play calming music for them. The hardest part was waiting in line to file the adoption paperwork and pay the fee (which by the way is incredibly reasonable... and includes the spay/neuter surgery, shots, microchip, and free clinic for the first 10 days or so). That line seems to crawl by, but only because we were excited to get our puppy. I would adopt from here again. read more

The pit bull is now in "foster care". When I tried to call MULTIPLE times to talk With officer in charge there, left voicemails, etc and got no calls back. I tried to warn them that the dog is aggressive and shouldn't be in around other small dogs. 10/10 don't recommend calling them. You can find justice your own way. read more

Zero stars needs to be an option. We adopted our cat 9 years ago from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter and had her spayed at adoption. They apparently missed some reproductive cells and she has been in heat for the last several months. We've even had to move her into the garage because she is spraying/peeing in the house. We contacted the Mo. Co. Shelter about the situation (we still have all her adoption paperwork) to see if they would be willing to help us out by either "re-spaying" her or helping out with some of the cost to have our vet perform the procedure. Our vet says it will be $1400-$1800 for the exploratory surgery to find the missed cells. After nearly a month and a half of calling, emailing and finally going up there because no one would answer the phone, the shelter's response was that they have changed management since we adopted her, so they are not responsible for her. They said we are welcome to surrender her to them. (Obviously not going to happen.) She's 11 years old now, so it's pretty easy to figure out that they most likely would just put her down. So, if you're looking to adopt, DON'T go to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter - go through a rescue or another shelter. read more

We found a stray kitten in our neighborhood on Sunday 11 July 2021, went to MCAS on Monday to find information as to what we can do (we can't adopt or foster this kitten, my husbands allergic). A male staff came outside, didn't bother to acknowledge us until I asked him questions. He looked annoyed that I was asking questions and was unfriendly. I go on to the website and scheduled an appointment, but nothing was available until Friday. The rescue coordinator was very helpful and reached out when an appointment came available. Now, its Wednesday and the Kitten passed away last night. I reached out to MCAS to see if I can turn her in, but the message the sent was really cold and didn't give me an alternative. This is by far the WORSE thing I have ever experienced. I get that they are the only shelter in town, but any compassion or friendliness would of been great. I just had to make a review. I hope the animals inside are treated better than this. read more

If I could leave zero stars I 100% would! I went by to adopt an older puppy, and when I asked if I could pull her into the yard to meet her, I was told no because they closed in 15 minutes! How much sense does that make? I proceeded to ask if I could just adopt her quickly then. They immediately shut that down too, saying that it's too late and that they're about to close. We got them on a Sunday, on Tuesday one of the kittens passed away in my arms. Talk about traumatizing! Now my last kitten has the same sickness and will have to be put to sleep. adopted my kitty from her june 2019 and didn't think of looking/posting review until now lol with update pictures ! when i first visited the whole area where they held all the cats stinked very very bad . my MIL couldn't even stand to walk into the room and i saw a lot of other people couldn't either and just waited outside for their families inside smh . the kittens looked healthy from what i saw . the ladies at the front desk were a little rude to the people while i was in line overhearing, but they were okay with me so i guessed they probably just had long days and some people in line were very rude too . also , sadly after seeing the other pictures of prior reviews of how this shelter has treated animals before has lost some stars . I do love my baby though and am grateful for this shelter in a way and also the many it has helped already who have homes . but for the ones it didn't bother to save .. I am no Stranger to an Animal Shelter: so believe me when I am giving this shelter 4 stars it means something good. My husband and I just adopted our 3rd dog from Montgomery! We also have 2 other dogs that we adopted in Louisiana. Our new girl had been in the shelter since May - we were looking on their Facebook page and I saw that the Shelter had a "sale" for the month of August - just $10 a pet which included the spay/neuter fee.I know it's sad they had to use that tactic but these animals need homes! And it was pretty effective too! When we arrived there were tons of cars! Their Facebook page had adorable pictures of every adoptable cat and dog in their shelter. The also had an area set up where they take the pictures of the dogs for the page. The Kennel was one of the BEST I have seen in a shelter. They had AT MOST - 2 dogs a cage (paired based off compatibility). There are 3 fenced-in units on the side of the kennel where you take the dogs out to play with. They have a nice cat room where you can take the cats out and play. The cages were clean and the dogs looked healthy. There is no way that these animals are mistreated. The volunteers bringing out the dogs were college aged and felt a connection to each of the dogs. The staff were concerned and cared about each of the animals. At one point when we were checking out.. A man came in surrendering his gorgeous Husky. The woman holding our dog couldn't believe it and was upset (as was I). Now those of you who have never been to a shelter let me give you a comparison: in Baton Rouge Animal Shelters - there can be up to 3-4 dogs in a cage, conditions terrible, sad, no relief areas for the animals to stretch their legs. It is a horrible sight. We have yet to take her to get spayed at the clinic but It will happen before April - which is when they gave us he spay appointment. Anyone looking adopt: take in account the older dogs need homes just as much as the puppies!! read more
