I hesitate to write this review because this is by far the best Mexican food I've ever eaten at a restaurant. Usually I don't have to wait to be seated. I would hate to have to wait for 30-60 minutes to get a table but everyone working at this restaurant is super nice. This restaurant opens at 4am and closes at 2:30pm. Their lunch specials start at 11am. Always plenty of great food at a great price with Ice tea included. Men flock to this restaurant, in the morning, for breakfast tacos. Monterrey Cafe is a busy little joint just off of I-35 in New Braunfels. It is in a residential-oriented neighborhood and is a bit hidden but don't let that fool you. Although it was very crowded we got seated pretty quickly. The food and the crowd both have a down home feel that makes you very comfortable. The menu is what you might expect at a Tex-Mex type of cafe with huevos rancheros, enchiladas and similar offerings. My eggs were perfectly done over easy and were delicious with the home fries on a homemade tortilla. Prices are very reasonable as well. Solid local Mexican cafe. I go here more often than anywhere else when meeting friends in the morning before work. The building is broken in enough to feel established - like a comfy sweater, but not so old to feel "dingy". The staff are friendly and helpful. The food has a homemade flavor and is very authentic. Serving sizes are pretty good and the tortillas are delicious. Waitstaff are really nice and accommodating. They are attentive and make sure you are taken care of. You can sit wherever you want in the restaurant, but it is small. There was no wait when we came and we were eating our breakfast in no time. This is not a Mexican restaurant! Took the recommendations on Yelp and decided to try this little hole in the wall. Definitely not flashy from the outside but amazing artwork. We noticed it was busy at lunch very little parking. The people here were friendly and the service was very quick. I will say this is one of the quietest dinners we have had as a family because everyone was so overwhelmed with how good it tasted! Everyone including kids have this place two thumbs up for how great it tasted. The salsa was a different taste but very good. The hotter habanero salsa was not hood for dipping but great to add some flavor and spice to your dish. Everyone noticed that the rice was not a typical Mexican and rice and after a scan of the room it was noted this place is not a Mexican restaurant! This is a Salvadorian restaurant that is why the rice and salsa are different. Things here were a little sweeter than the typical Mexican flavor and the menu reflected a variety of Salvadorian foods. Our food was hot and full of flavor definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a good home cook meal. The only thing that kept the review from a 5 star was the bathroom situation. One bathroom not well maintained and you could tell it was frequented by construction workers with a little grease and mud on the sinks. All in all try it out for sure ! read more

This hole in the wall in New Braunfels' west end won't impress you from outside or inside, until you examine the large Tex-Mex menu, eat the delicious food, and pay the very modest bill. A basket of very crisp, fresh and non-oily chips and a red salsa that was bold without being harsh met us at the outset. Huge tumblers of iced tea. My wife had spinach quesadillas that looked very thick despite having no meat. She raved about the 1/2 she ate and saved the other 1/2 for a late night snack. I had the poblano enchiladas which had flavorful chiles inside and a zippy verde salsa outside. Yummy homemade corn tortillas helped me corral some of the rice and beans and veggies that accompanied the enchiladas. I ordered a half-dozen pork tamales to-go, and the stolen bite of one of them met with my approval. Generous amount of pork filling in them. All for $26 plus a very generous tip for our server, Yaqui, who couldn't have been nicer. Overall, it's delicious home-cooked Tex-Mex at little more than half the price of some of the more glammed up Mexican options in town. It may very well become our go-to place for a Mexican breakfast or lunch, bud sadly it closes at 3pm so no dinner. read more

Absolutely delicious food. I almost gave 4 stars because the restaurant and their bathroom was exceptionally dirty. However, the food is so outstanding I had to repent to a five. I had the Migas plate. I generally don't eat much of the retried beans that come with a meal. These were so flavorful, I completely cleaned my plate. Stumbled on this place looking for breakfast one morning. The breakfast tacos are amazing. They're big but good! The hot sauce is house made. Personally, I thought the green sauce wasn't that hot but had good flavor. The red sauce is mild with more of a tomato flavor. They also have a habenero sauce if you request it! Found my new favorite tex-mex in New B. Hands down, the best. On a lark, decided to try this out. Very wonky getting in due to the construction surrounding it and the weird way some cars park which cuts the front parking in half. The parking looked pretty full and when a work friend and I came in, we took the last seats. Wow, it was jammed. The building is flamboyantly painted and you know what food is being served here. The inside was clean but very down to earth. The waitress was awesome. Very efficient, polite, quick, knowledgeable. The ones I love. The menu was huge on the dinner side and almost non-existent on the lunch. On the wall is the daily lunch specials which is basically a random six or seven of the dinners. I kind of liked that. It also, unfortunately, meant that I over ate at lunch and needed a nap! The chips were so-so, but the salsa was superb. Very different. Great on tacos! I got the Mexican dinner which at $7 including tea was a deal/steal. The taco was very fresh and great. The rice/beans were very good. The enchiladas were WOW. Loved the gravy. The tortillas were smoking hot and freshly made. Next time I come, I'll be trying out their tamales. Just note, don't go at lunch: I need the parking lot open and a table when I go back!! read more

We are camping in New Braunfels and Monterrey Cafe came up on Google maps so we decided to give them a try. So glad we did. Great food. You know when the local workers are coming in for lunch that you picked a good spot. I had the quesadilla lunch special. It came with beef or chicken quesadilla, beef or chicken enchilada, rice, beans, guac and sour cream, tea included for only $7. I wish I lived closer to this little gem. I'm new to the area and haven't been to a lot of local restaurants. Mr and I stopped by several months ago while doing errands and Monterrey Café has become our favorite. Everything we've ordered is delicious and the prices are great! My go to order is the salvadorean tamales wrapped in a banana leaf and the pupusas. I can't think of a better place for a quick bite or a full dinner. The servings are generously sized and the staff are friendly!
