Monterrey Cafe - cheese enchilada plate with their salsa on top - Mexican Near Me - New Braunfels, Texas

Monterrey Cafe is a busy little joint just off of I-35 in New Braunfels. It is in a residential-oriented neighborhood and is a bit hidden but don't let that fool you. Although it was very crowded we got seated pretty quickly. The food and the crowd both have a down home feel that makes you very comfortable. The menu is what you might expect at a Tex-Mex type of cafe with huevos rancheros, enchiladas and similar offerings. My eggs were perfectly done over easy and were delicious with the home fries on a homemade tortilla. Prices are very reasonable as well. If you're traveling between Austin and San Antonio, this is a great place to stop for a solid meal. Recommended. read more

Solid local Mexican cafe. I go here more often than anywhere else when meeting friends in the morning before work. The building is broken in enough to feel established - like a comfy sweater, but not so old to feel "dingy". The staff are friendly and helpful. I got a breakfast "super taco" for the first time this last visit - super delicious and just enough to be filling without being too so much to regret trying to eat it all. read more

Monterrey Cafe - Breakfast super taco - bacon, eggs, potatoes, and chorizo. - Mexican Near Me - New Braunfels, Texas

Love that I can order breakfast tacos until 1:00! Nothing is small and tacos are delicious. Don't pass by this place...stop by, you will not be disappointed! read more

I hesitate to write this review because this is by far the best Mexican food I've ever eaten at a restaurant. Usually I don't have to wait to be seated. I would hate to have to wait for 30-60 minutes to get a table but everyone working at this restaurant is super nice. This restaurant opens at 4am and closes at 2:30pm. Their lunch specials start at 11am. Always plenty of great food at a great price with Ice tea included. Men flock to this restaurant, in the morning, for breakfast tacos. The turnover guarantees fresh food. I've always been happy with the food & service. Love this place. read more

Delicious food served by friendly waitstaff. Everything looks to be homemade. Cozy and clean dining area. Plenty of variety on the menu.

Some of the best soft tacos I've ever had! I had a chorizo & potato and carne guisada tacos and they were to die for. I wish I had room for another but two was perfect! Staff was very friendly, the place was clean and I already already SO excited to come back!! read more

What a hidden gem! Came here with a friend at their recommendation for breakfast. The place is clean. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the food is delicious. I was so impressed with everything that I would definitely come back here and bring others. The portions are large. The prices are reasonable and when it comes with a smile and a thank you it makes the whole experience 1000 times better. read more

This is our local go to for lunch.... If you like hole in the wall Mexican food like we do, this is a great spot!

Food is always amazing and authentic. My family's favorite place for breakfast and tacos!

Waitress was wonderful and checked on us often. Food is very reasonable and good portions. We had the juevos ranchero. Beans were so good. Tortilla hot . Can't wait to go back to this little hole in the wall. Delicious read more

The food has a homemade flavor and is very authentic. Serving sizes are pretty good and the tortillas are delicious. Waitstaff are really nice and accommodating. They are attentive and make sure you are taken care of. You can sit wherever you want in the restaurant, but it is small. There was no wait when we came and we were eating our breakfast in no time. Most tables were full when we arrived and when we left. It is definitely a popular place for locals. Highly recommend. read more

Best breakfast spot! Right off the highway! Super speedy service!! Bring your appetite and enjoy the authentic menu choices! Casual restaurant with a family feel! read more

People were friendly, but straws are too small and barely fit in the cup. Puffy tacos were basically tostada's since they were super fried. I ordered the tbone that was supposed to come with a cheese enchilada and when it didn't have it the waitress told me the thone I ordered didn't have it like I didn't know what I had ordered. read more

This is my go to breakfast taco joint in New Braunfels. It was recommended to me by some locals when I moved here about 10 years ago and it has never lost its quality. I brought my dad here and now each time he visits, he has to make a stop for breakfast tacos. Service is very direct and no nonsense. Get your order ready or ordering to go and grab a table or wait outside for it. It's gonna get busy! read more

Delicious food, great service. Had chicken fried steak. Generous portions. Server was friendly and attentive.

Served me spoiled pork chops and tried to cover it up with seasonings. Refried Beans are just bad beans Hard Taco is very plain, Taco Bell has more flavor. Prices are good ..... is it worth the risk ? No ! Mexican Coke was the only good thing in a bottle ! Service is usually good. Food is eat at your own risk ! Health department would have a hay day here ! Serving bad pork is a Major Gamble !$! read more

My go-to place in NB for tex-mex food! Love this place. My kids love their carne guisada tacos with cheese. Their barbacoa is amazing.

Best migas I've ever had! The service was quick, servers were friendly and food was amazing. Glad we stumbled upon this place

The breakfast tacos are great every time but service is a little dry. Respectful but slightly unwelcoming.

This is not a Mexican restaurant! Took the recommendations on Yelp and decided to try this little hole in the wall. Definitely not flashy from the outside but amazing artwork. We noticed it was busy at lunch very little parking. The people here were friendly and the service was very quick. I will say this is one of the quietest dinners we have had as a family because everyone was so overwhelmed with how good it tasted! Everyone including kids have this place two thumbs up for how great it tasted. The salsa was a different taste but very good. The hotter habanero salsa was not hood for dipping but great to add some flavor and spice to your dish. Everyone noticed that the rice was not a typical Mexican and rice and after a scan of the room it was noted this place is not a Mexican restaurant! This is a Salvadorian restaurant that is why the rice and salsa are different. Things here were a little sweeter than the typical Mexican flavor and the menu reflected a variety of Salvadorian foods. Our food was hot and full of flavor definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a good home cook meal. The only thing that kept the review from a 5 star was the bathroom situation. One bathroom not well maintained and you could tell it was frequented by construction workers with a little grease and mud on the sinks. All in all try it out for sure ! read more

This hole in the wall in New Braunfels' west end won't impress you from outside or inside, until you examine the large Tex-Mex menu, eat the delicious food, and pay the very modest bill. A basket of very crisp, fresh and non-oily chips and a red salsa that was bold without being harsh met us at the outset. Huge tumblers of iced tea. My wife had spinach quesadillas that looked very thick despite having no meat. She raved about the 1/2 she ate and saved the other 1/2 for a late night snack. I had the poblano enchiladas which had flavorful chiles inside and a zippy verde salsa outside. Yummy homemade corn tortillas helped me corral some of the rice and beans and veggies that accompanied the enchiladas. I ordered a half-dozen pork tamales to-go, and the stolen bite of one of them met with my approval. Generous amount of pork filling in them. All for $26 plus a very generous tip for our server, Yaqui, who couldn't have been nicer. Overall, it's delicious home-cooked Tex-Mex at little more than half the price of some of the more glammed up Mexican options in town. It may very well become our go-to place for a Mexican breakfast or lunch, bud sadly it closes at 3pm so no dinner. read more

Absolutely delicious food. I almost gave 4 stars because the restaurant and their bathroom was exceptionally dirty. However, the food is so outstanding I had to repent to a five. I had the Migas plate. I generally don't eat much of the retried beans that come with a meal. These were so flavorful, I completely cleaned my plate. The potatoes were excellent and you could tell they were handcut and not from frozen. Really delicious and I would stop here again. read more

Very rude fat Lady they also bring you the wrong order. Food is Good but bad management.

Best breakfast tacos--order whatever you want and they'll make it but I love the nopales & egg. You can also order a giant delicious chile relleno as a side dish at lunch if you don't feel like eating a mountain of food. I shouldn't even be writing a review...don't want it to get more crazy crowded. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE. read more

Stumbled on this place looking for breakfast one morning. The breakfast tacos are amazing. They're big but good! The hot sauce is house made. Personally, I thought the green sauce wasn't that hot but had good flavor. The red sauce is mild with more of a tomato flavor. They also have a habenero sauce if you request it! Give it a try!! read more

Go in 45 min before closing and find main dinning area closed? Small area by kitchen open with 4 tables, all occupied. Are told 15 min wait! I GUESS THEY HAVE ENOUGH business to make sure they can leave at 3. Head to Mexican food up street, laziness is never a good recipe for success. read more

Homemade tortillas. All homemade & very authentic. Service good. Reasonably priced!! My caldo was good, but too many potatoes.

Stopped for breakfast with the family. Daughter said it looked like "gas station" food stop. Hubby got huevos rancheros and son got pancakes and sausage with eggs. Wow! My Migas was perfectly cooked with crispy tortilla pieces and just the right amount of spice, along with potatoes, beans and tortillas, huge breakfast! Coffee was so fresh and good. Service amazing, these ladies hustle and smile! Customers were regulars and greeted by name. Fantastic breakfast/ lunch place right off the interstate! read more

Found my new favorite tex-mex in New B. Hands down, the best. On a lark, decided to try this out. Very wonky getting in due to the construction surrounding it and the weird way some cars park which cuts the front parking in half. The parking looked pretty full and when a work friend and I came in, we took the last seats. Wow, it was jammed. The building is flamboyantly painted and you know what food is being served here. The inside was clean but very down to earth. The waitress was awesome. Very efficient, polite, quick, knowledgeable. The ones I love. The menu was huge on the dinner side and almost non-existent on the lunch. On the wall is the daily lunch specials which is basically a random six or seven of the dinners. I kind of liked that. It also, unfortunately, meant that I over ate at lunch and needed a nap! The chips were so-so, but the salsa was superb. Very different. Great on tacos! I got the Mexican dinner which at $7 including tea was a deal/steal. The taco was very fresh and great. The rice/beans were very good. The enchiladas were WOW. Loved the gravy. The tortillas were smoking hot and freshly made. Next time I come, I'll be trying out their tamales. Just note, don't go at lunch: I need the parking lot open and a table when I go back!! read more

Hands down the best cheese enchiladas in this town and at a very reasonable price. Family had a mixture of meals consisting of chicken fajita quesadillas, enchiladas, carne guisada, tacos, queso and tamales. Plates were cleaned quickly. No to go boxes needed. Wasn't a fan of the pork tamales. I wanted to be, but they were dry. Family loved the rice and beans. read more

We are camping in New Braunfels and Monterrey Cafe came up on Google maps so we decided to give them a try. So glad we did. Great food. You know when the local workers are coming in for lunch that you picked a good spot. I had the quesadilla lunch special. It came with beef or chicken quesadilla, beef or chicken enchilada, rice, beans, guac and sour cream, tea included for only $7. I wish I lived closer to this little gem. They are open from 4am to 3pm. I may have to give them a try for breakfast. read more

I'm new to the area and haven't been to a lot of local restaurants. Mr and I stopped by several months ago while doing errands and Monterrey Café has become our favorite. Everything we've ordered is delicious and the prices are great! My go to order is the salvadorean tamales wrapped in a banana leaf and the pupusas. I can't think of a better place for a quick bite or a full dinner. The servings are generously sized and the staff are friendly! It does close early so get there and you won't be disappointed. read more
