After living in her home for 65 years, Rose sold it to the city of Hollywood in 2010 for $59,4000 so it could be turned into a park. The acre park on the corner of Monroe Street and 24th Ave. is made up of 5 lots that were purchased by Rose's parents and that used to belong to Rose and her siblings. The city had long wanted to put a park in this area to give the neighborhood children somewhere to play. In 2012 at the age of 93, Rose attended the ribbon cutting ceremony at the park name for her. The park cost around $700,000 to build with $213,000 come from the city. The rest of the money was provided by grants from Broward County and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The park was designed to be eco-friendly and was the first of it's kind for the city. It was created to be low maintenance and low cost. Solar lighting and a rainwater cistern for irrigation were added. The playground has a fabric shade cover and surrounding it is a walking path and five exercise equipment stations. The park also has a picnic table, trash recycling compactor, native plants, and recycled plastic benches. There is no parking here so it is definitely a neighborhood park. The city is taking good care of it and it looks great. I think Rose would be glad to know that on the day I visited, her park was being enjoyed by a young boy and his mother.

Yesterday was a busy day as I had the pleasure of attending two parties at this park!…read more At first glance, you'd think that what you see from University Drive is all the park has to offer. This is not the case at all! In the front of the park, there are 3 pavilions, a playground and splash pad. One of my parties was in this area. And it was great. You can enjoy the party while watching your kids play on the playground or the splash pad as everything is in close proximity. There is one pavilion that is a little further away but not too far away. The second party was in the nature center that is technically connected to the office. There is a closed in area and back patio. The back patio is where the second party was as it was a picnic theme. In addition to that the park offers a walking trail and someone mentioned that there is an area to see animals. I am not sure of the extent to that.

Another Saturday, another run in a new park!…read more Well, new to me. My friend and I have a pact to run every Saturday this month while exploring parks around Broward and this first Saturday of September we ventured to Miramar Pineland Park. I was not looking forward to this run since the first photos I saw were a trail with no shade but luckily, 3/4 of the trail were covered by shady trees! This park has the standar $1.50 per person entrance fee for weekends and holidays. Once you enter, the first part has a few pavilions for parties and a big playground with a splash pad (currently not in service.) If you keep driving, it leads you to the new Nature Center (I think) that isn't open yet and the beginning of one of their trails. This is the one we chose to take. It was very hot at 10am but we welcome the covered trail. Along the trail, there's a pathway that leads to a gazebo which overlooks nothing at the moment. If you run around the trail twice, it covers one mile. The nature center looks really nice and looks like it could be used for a wedding party or larger gatherings. The only thing is parking seems limited so I'm interested to see if they add any later. Driving out of the park, we noticed that there is also a "Wetland Trail" so you bet this is going to be one of our future runs. Hopefully we remember to bring sunblock as it looks like this one doesn't have any shade.

Mailman built 56 inexpensive homes of concrete with flat roofs which sold quickly because of their low cost and which launched the city of Miramar. The city was incorporated on May 26, 1955, and was named for the Miramar area of Havana, Cuba where Mailman had a summer home. Miramar translates to look at the sea in Spanish. Miramar has a number of well appointed parks both large and small. On the small side is 19th Street Park. This quarter acre community recreational resource is considered a tot lot or pocket park. Pocket parks are generally less than a half acre in size and can have different amenities for the public. This type of mini park arose from a desire in communities to have places for kids to play instead of another building or wasted vacant land. The creation of this park arose out of the need to provide recreational amenities to a east part of Miramar that had none for miles and kids were playing in the street. Three private residential lots across from St. Stephen Catholic School were purchased to develop into this park. The fenced in 19th Street Park offers a pavilion with electricity that can be reserved, barbeques, picnic tables, a playground, swings, and very unusual for a pocket park, restrooms. There are a few parking spots in front of the park. The 19th Street Park has fulfilled the mission of providing a safe place for community kids to play and for people to gather for parties and events.

Driftwoods Estates is a beautiful 5 acre park tucked in the back of the Driftwood Estates…read moreneighborhood. Driftwood Estates was built from 1960-1979 and consists of 2 to 4 bedroom single-story homes. In 2020 Driftwood Estates Park received $200,000 worth of improvements. Today it has a baseball/ softball field, basketball court, covered playground, restrooms, outdoor fitness stations, a large shelter which can be rented, and a tennis court. My favorite part of the park was the exercise path that runs along the perimeter of the park. As I was walking around I discovered an adorable burrowing owl checking me out. Burrowing owls are considered endangered, threatened or of special concern in nine U.S. states. Unlike other owls they are not strictly nocturnal and are active during the day. They make their nests in underground burrows, which are dug out by ground squirrels and they prefer open grasslands. Burrowing owls are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act so you have to leave them alone. It was a treat to see this owl and quickly leave him in peace.

This is an awesome place to jog and exercise. It's great for kids, including the usual amenities…read more(slides, swings, monkey bars). There are also multiple pavilions great for Sunday bbq. They have a tennis court, a paddle bar area and a huge field for soccer or football. Every thing is free so if you get to it first it's yours. A few downsides include the bathrooms never being open and the grass is rather tall.

As such, it has very little shaded areas aside from the covered shelters, playgrounds & amphitheater. I come here couple times a week for the boys soccer events and practice. The lawns are usually well kept and even. It's great for many types of workouts, walks, etc. It's a great spot to catch a sunset on a clear day as well. The bathroom facilities were ok, sparsely located for this sized park.

We visited for the Miramar Kite Festival, which was such a fun experience. The city did a fantastic job organizing the event. There were multiple food trucks, a DJ, and a variety of tent vendors, including the city, fire rescue, PDQ, and other local businesses. One of the highlights was that the city gave out free kites to all guests. The turnout was great, and the atmosphere was lively. One large field was dedicated to kite flying, while a baseball outfield was set up as a kids' zone with several bounce houses for different age groups. We brought a picnic setup and beach chairs and truly enjoyed spending the day here. Overall, it was a wonderful event, and this park is a great place to visit!

Shirley Branca, the wife of Miramar Mayor Frank Branca worked to transform the site into a place the kids from the school and the people in the community could come to and enjoy by beautifying the area and turning it into a park. Walking paths, a small amphitheater and plants native to South Florida were added. The park was named in Shirley's honor after she passed away in September of 1986 at the age of 51 from a rare form of cancer. Today Shirley Branca Park still serves as an anchor tor east Miramar. Park amenities include the walking trail with small hills , a splash pad, picnic pavilions, picnic tables, amphitheater, open space for play, and restrooms. They even had an EV charging station. On the day I visited a lot of people were exercising on the walking trail. Different community events are held at the park like the Pop N' Shop at Branca held every 3rd Saturday from 11 AM until 3 PM. This is a very nice park for exercise, attending an event, or enjoying a picnic.

Sawyer Park is a small, charming neighborhood park in Miramar on Venetian Street and Island Drive…read more The park was named in honor of Reverend Robert E. Sawyer who along with his wife Katherine founded the Pembroke Road Baptist Church and the Pembroke Christian Academy of Miramar. In 2021 the city of Miramar embarked on a $1 million recreation expansion program that gave Miramar two new parks and refurbished eight others. $600,000 was raised from donations, grants, and fees from developers. Sawyer Park was one of the eight parks to receive new play equipment and landscaping. Sawyer Park is completely fenced in which is great for safety. Outside the fence are a few parking spaces. Inside the park the playground equipment is ADA accessible and trees provide welcome shade. There is also an open grassy area for unstructured play. This is a great recreational amenity for the people in the neighborhood to take their kids to play.
