Great!!! So happy! A puppy chewed one of my tall Northface boots, and I was super bummed at the thought of just throwing them away because one was still prefect. I called a couple of places and explained what happened to them, and asked if they might be able to just shorten the boots. They all said "we don't do that kind of work". Then I called Montclair shoe repair (in upper Montclair) and the gentleman said bring them in! Less then two weeks later my boots were ready. They were perfectly shorten. Doesn't deserve even 1 star. I brought my broken zippered sweater to them; they said they would repair it. Now the zipper can move up and down but cannot be separated. I can't put the sweater on - the zipper won't open. The owner was rude, said Too Bad, didn't offer to return my money or even apologize for ruining the sweater. DONT USE THIS STORE! I went in there and encountered this very tiny young women..I brother in a pair of cowboy boots they needed new soles..she quoted a price 90 bucks for both boots..at other places it's 45 bucks for both boots total..now she didn't write it down that i had by accident or on purpose I had to repay the 95 bucks again because of her stupid ness..what a shitty experience never again will I go there. read more

My wolverines needed repairing after I wore out the soles last year, and I expected nothing less than what I received after seeing their work on Instagram. Worth every single dollar for the professional to go to work and return it better than before. I have lived in montclair since 1997. I have struggled to find a shoe repair person ( usually male) here or near by that was not rude, sulky, nasty, mean, indifferent, and sometimes terrible at thier job.The women at MSR are really artisans! They so nice too. I believe it's a mother and daughter team. They great you with a smile behind a Covid protection screen. They fixed my purse expertly and are now fixing a pair of new boots I bought at a store closing that were just too wide at the calf. That takes a skill not seen here.. ever! Walked in to have a handbag repaired. Was greeted and serviced immediately. The price I was quoted was very fair due to the condition & that it's a luxury handbag. I work for a luxury handbag company and having knowledge of what the repairs normally cost I was very happy with my quote. I was told to come back in 2 weeks (not a long time in my opinion.) You know good work is being done when they want to take their time. I prefer them to take their time and do a good job fixing my bag rather than rushing it. Wonderful work! I don't understand the negative reviews. I have taken multiple pairs of shoes/boots for leather, heel, scratches, and all over improvement to Montclair Shoe Repair and have always been treated with respect, charged a reasonable amount and have been beyond happy with my repairs. Most recently I had to take a very expensive pair of heels in for a repair because my dog scratched the leather- the owner was engaged and concerned when I expressed my desire to have the shoe fixed only if he was able to, otherwise leave it as is. He was able to fix the scratch it is barely visible, thank goodness! Overall I've had such great experiences with shoe repair with Montclair Shoe Repair and have recommended them to many friends! read more

Along with the few others, I do not understand the bad reviews. They are knowledgeable, thorough, and reasonable. There are not many such repair stores (who also know about high end items) around and are swamped! If it's so "easy" as some reviewers said their repairs were...do it yourself! I don't need to be best buddies with every business I patronize, therefore did not even notice if I got a smile or a hello. When I walked in, the person working in the window got right up to help me, listened to my concerns, had alternative ideas, showed me the materials she'd be using and told me only one week! I visited the store during a short stay in NJ to fix a pair of dress shoes (the sole had become too worn out in the back). The owner fixed them with rubber soles that were better than original ones and added a few more years to them! I was more than satisfied with the work and didn't mind paying a little extra to add life back into my favorite pair of shoes. The store is owned by a middle-aged Korean couple and luckily, I happen to speak their native language, so I didn't run into any conflicts that some of the others here have mentioned. Also, paying the 50% deposit is understandable because they explained that many people don't return to collect the finished work and that they have a pile sitting in their basement from previous customers before the 50% deposit was required. It's just like advanced payment we pay at the cleaners. I definitely plan to come back here with a few other pairs of my favorite dress shoes the next time I visit. read more

My daughter's shoe strap had come off and she needed it fir her birthday party. So I went to MSR in an emergency. The owner said I have to come back to pick up the glued strap and he charged me exorbitantly. The strap broke the same day at her party. When I went back, the owner looked at the shoe and said that it was not his glue! He said he repaired the other shoe and this was a new breakage. He was rude and pretended to be able to see his glue!!! This was a complete lie. These guys are cheats and rude to top it off! Please stay away from this business. read more

I don't understand the negative reviews previously given to Montclair Shoe Repair as I have gotten nothing but good service here. Do the owners speak perfect English? No, but I've never had a mean or unpleasant encounter with them. I've gotten belts and purses fixed here, along with the mangled soles of my boots that I thought I had worn past repair. Is it pricy? Sure, a bit. But I can't repair shoes myself so I'm willing to pay the money! In addition to this, they have a good turnover of items, and are more than willing to shorten the repair time if given a reason (aka procrastination before returning to college!). Bottom line: It can be pricy, but they do quality work and it is well worth the price. I am consistently pleased with the items that I have them repair. read more

I brought a medium-sized leather handbag in for cleaning. The woman working quoted me $170 to clean it "inside and out". I told her that was more than what I paid for the bag originally. She just repeated "$170". Even if it took someone two solid hours to clean this bag, which seems a stretch, that's outrageous. Minus the materials used, I'm not going to pay $80 an hour for someone to clean a purse. I won't be returning to this business. read more

I have a beloved red leather jacket from Italy that is 13 years old. It was worn out & then the leather ripped. Montclair Shoe & Leather Repair did an amazing job sewing the rip & restoring the color. The jacket looks brand new. I am so happy with the craftsmanship & service. When I moved to Upper Montclair I brought a pair of boots here to be resoled and cleaned. I understand the owner is not fluent in English and have no problem with that. My problem is he charges outlandish prices for his work. I decided to go somewhere else and the price was $20 compared to Montclair Shoe Repair's quote of $55. I think this guy takes advantage of his location and thinks he can charge whatever he wants to the residence of Upper Montclair. He is also not very pleasant, sorry language barrier is not an excuse for unpleasant behavior from a shop owner! My advice, drive to Verona or Caldwell and get your shoes repaired at a fair price! read more

They did not repair the scratches in my leather shoe that I brought to them and charged me 15 dollars for the very shallow and not thorough work they did. I almost said to them that I am sorry, you did not do your job. I am not paying you. However, to avoid a possible situation involving the police, I paid. I will never come here again. The place is run by a rude and argumentative Korean woman with a very bad command of English, and so the tone of your interaction with her becomes frustrated and tense quickly because you can't understand her and she can't understand you. The place needs to be bought out by competent American cobblers who can speak the language of the country they live in. I tried this store because they were close to my home and work. Unfortunately, I only saw the negative Yelp reviews after my unfriendly experience. A man who I believe was the owner was not particularly friendly and a bit lacking in interpersonal skills. All he wanted to do was to charge me $30 for what seemed to be very simple work. When I explained that I didn't think it's worth it to have the shoes fixed he seemed dismissive and started walking away. When I asked if he had a priceless to a website he rudely answered no. My husband brought a pir of shoes to be repaired. They fell apart again a couple days later. He returned to have them repaired again only to have the person deny he fixed them originally because he could not see "his glue." Rather than argue, he left the shoes. They are charging him again. I will not use this shoe repair again and advise all of you to go somewhere else. read more

I give this place 1 star for horrible, horrible service. I went in just now to ask for simple lifts put on the bottom of my shoes. The woman at the counter gave me a very expensive quote of $25. When I expressed my surprise, she said " what, you think 25 cents? Yes $25!", shoved them back at me, and walked away. How rude! Repair At Your Own Risk!!!! I should have known that this would not be a good experience when I walked into Montclair Shoe Repair and the customer ahead of me was arguing with the owner and ended up saying "you just lost my business". My experience: I dropped off two pairs of shoes to be repaired. The repair cost was quite expensive but they were good shoes and at the time, I felt it was a good investment. The claim ticket and sign in the store clearly states "not responsible for items left over 30 days" so I do take responsibility for not picking up my shoes within the 30 days. Actually, I left them there for about 6 months as I had forgotten about them. When I finally went to pick up the shoes ( of which I had already paid half and owed the balance), one pair of shoes was nowhere to be found. I picked up the other pair and paid off the balance agreeing we would both look for the shoes to confirm if I might have already picked them up or they had been misplaced at the store. After 3 days of looking, I could not find them nor could the owner. Through out this time period, the owner was quite curt and surly with me and kept saying " you left them here too long". Finally when it was clear the shoes were lost, I asked for some compensation, and at the least, reimbursement for the repair cost. The owner argued relentlessly with me about this and finally gave me a 1/3rd of the repair cost back. It was very clear to all parties that I dropped off two pairs (he did not argue that point at all) and the owner was not interested in taking any responsibility on his part at all. All in all, the customer service was abysmal and I would recommend that people steer clear of Montclair Shoe Repair. It's way too expensive for the quality of work and honestly, the owner does not seem to have any interest at all in customer service. read more

I have taken two pairs of my Louboutins here to get the studs replaced and was more than happy with the service. The first time, I told the owner I had my own studs that came with the shoes so he said the price would only be $10 (it's usually $15) & that he would use them. Unfortunately, they were for the wrong pair but when I picked them up he didn't charge me the additional $5! I brought a second pair with the correct pair of studs & again was only charged $10 plus they stayed open 20 minutes longer (they close at 5:30) for me so I could get there (I needed them for an event the following day so that was super nice of them)! Awful, last time I every go there no matter how bad I need repair. First time I asked if they could rush the easies thing add taps to heel of new shoes. Told it would take2 weeks when I asked if they could rush she started taking next person and ignored me. Had to get a funky color polish. Polish was piled in a bin not sorted like everything in that dump. Asked if they had the color they said I don't know keep looking. It's a haul but NJ famous Rago Brothers in Morristown is worth the drive and they have magic wands that can fix anything read more

I came to Montclair Shoe Repair after taking my boots to two other cobblers who were unable to make the alterations needed. Montclair Shoe Repair was able to do the job, and I am very happy with the results. I see from some of the Yelp reviews that there are complaints of the owners being unfriendly, but that was not the case for me. If I could give this place a negative review, I would. I dropped off a few pairs of shoes and when I picked up a pair of wooden heeled and soled shoes, the shoemaker put black rubber where tan used to be, ruining my shoes. When I asked why he didn't replace the sole with the same color which was on there already, I was told the heel was black (it was not) and that there is no such thing as tan rubber. The cobbler said that tan rubber is only available to designers and is not sold 'after market.' I called another shoe repair to see whether they could fix my shoes, and they had tan rubber in stock and confirmed Montclair Shoe Repair not only ruined my shoes, but lied to me. Montclair shoe repair was beyond rude (I was nothing by polite) and I plan on asking for my money back, once my shoes are fixed correctly elsewhere. Do not go to this business. I would strongly discourage anyone from going to Montclair Shoe Repair. My review has nothing to do with the language barrier or rude treatment. It has to do with integrity and dishonesty. I brought my boots in for a heel repair. These boots were brought back from Italy and were very expensive and special to me. When I picked them up, the leather belt buckles on both boots were missing. My husband asked the owner about the buckles and he flat out lied. He claimed that they were brought to him without the buckles. Then he proceeded to check around the very disorganized store and came up with one buckle. His next lie was that we brought the boots in with a buckle only on the left boot and not the right boot. Really? I called to ask if they had found the other buckle and I was treated horribly. The owner told me I could not prove it and hung up on me. He should have been profusely apologizing and telling me that he will search for the lost buckle. Instead, he accuses me of bringing the boots with one missing. I am writing a letter to the Montclair Times warning consumers about this business. I will also be reporting this incident to other consumer advocate groups. Additionally, I know several other internet review sites that I will also report this too. I feel strongly about warning people about the integrity of the owners. At this point, a small claims suit is not out of the question. This used to be a good place to take your bags and shoes, and heaven only knows there are not many, so very unfortunate that the owner has become difficult. Repairs are costly, and whatever is wrong, he makes it worse when you first discuss a problem. Heel loose? Let's break it off. Handbag handle got mangled and the repair is just gluing? I am very grateful we have Montclair Shoe Repair in our neighborhood. They do a fine job, and I find their manner perfectly suiting. I have had many shoes repaired there over the years, and consider the prices reasonable and relative to the expenses of operating a workshop in the area. The fact that they are cash only would only be a bother to an intolerant person. I consider it a quaint reminder of yesteryear when all business were cash/check only. Being a shoe repair person is a job that many people are neither skilled enough to do nor willing to withstand the work conditions - which are toxic. Anyone who enters this shop should be very considerate and take a moment to acknowledge that this family work hard and are doing a service to the community with their business existing. In a world were so much is disposable, being able to have shoes repaired locally is something to be thankful for. read more

If I could give a negative star for this business I would. TOTAL RIP OFF. I brought in a fairly nice/new suitcase to have the handle repaired - one of the two rivets had broken. I specifically inquired if the one side of the handle could be riveted back on to match the other side and was told "YES". I was asked to pay in advance $30 for this repair. I was surprised at the price but the owner assured me the labor was expensive. When I picked up my suitcase the handle was put back on using a metal screw, washer and nut. Looks totally cheesy and does not match the other rivet and certainly did not cost $30. More like 30 cents. No wonder he demanded that I pay in advance - he probably has a lot of people who refuse to pay him when they pick up their items and see the shoddy work. I have since heard great things about "Express Shoe Repair 2" in west orange - I will be heading there in the future and I suggest you do too! read more
