I purchased a bouquet of flowers as a gift for a family member and spoke to a lady on the phone. She asked me how much I wanted to spend and I told her $50 which she says was ok but I would have to pay an additional $15 for delivery. $65 total. After the delivery was made I seen a charge for $90 on my card. When I tried to email and discuss with the owner she told me it was $65 plus delivery which is not true. The bouquet was small for $90. I really wanted to support a local small business but should have called 1-800-flowers instead and got double for what I paid. Make sure you are clear when speaking with these people or the will over charge you for a few flowers. read more

I needed to send an arrangement to a coworker to celebrate a new baby. Montclair Florist went above and beyond to ensure it was delivered. I unfortunately provided an outdated address, so when they went to deliver them, my coworker no longer lived there. The woman delivering the flowers was talking to the new folks who lived there and they so just happened to have my coworkers number. They were able to get the new address and she just went over and delivered them. I was expecting to pay an additional fee for this mix up, which is expected, but they said not to worry about it. I had a late order for a funeral home arrangement in Oakland.... someone (very nice lady) called me and asked what time the services were and I told her 3-4pm and she reminded me I had placed the order at 1pm and that it might be difficult to get the order there ontime but she was going to try. The Dramatic Effects bouquet I received from Montclair Florist was very cute, and on time. But it was small -- so small, in fact, that it drove me to compare the dimensions as advertised on their website. Advertised dimensions: 21" high, 16" wide. Actual dimensions: 14" high, 11" wide. It was 2/3 the height, and 2/3 the width. But the overall volume was actually only 1/3 of what they'd listed online (thanks, math!). Simply put -- considerably smaller than I'd ordered. Part of it was the the roses -- they were of the miniature variety, but not advertised as such. The snapdragons were missing entirely, and surely would have added some height and drama. And the vase was petite, while the one in the photo, based on the stated dimensions, should have been taller. So I called, and left a voicemail asking them to call me back, which the owner did a few minutes later. I told her that the bouquet was lovely, but it was very small -- was there a reason it was so much smaller than the website claimed? The owner, immediately flustered, told me that the flowers were all small because they're seasonal, that the flowers would grow to be taller in water (cut flowers? really?), and they'd expand to be wider and larger when I put them in water (they came prearranged in a vase, so that was curious). I started to speak, but she cut me off, said that I was the first customer in 35 years to measure the bouquet, and, giving up any pretense of customer service, that I just don't know about flowers, and that sometimes they're small. I told her that I certainly don't have her experience, but I have been buying flowers 4-5 times a year, and I just hadn't ever received anything that tiny before, which is why I'd checked the advertised measurements, and why I called. She responded that vase was actually bigger than the picture (a hard point to argue, but a reasonable person would probably disagree with her), that the flowers were exactly the right size because they were buds, and that no one measures flowers. I told her I wouldn't have had they not been so much smaller than the dimensions, but 2/3 the height and width was hard to ignore. At this point she offered to come pick up the bouquet and refund my money. That was the right thing to do -- offering the refund, not repeatedly talking over me -- and perhaps how she should have started in the first place. But I told her I wasn't looking for a refund. I just wanted to know if it had been a mistake, and to recommend that if she was going to sell flowers at a certain size, then she shouldn't advertise a much larger size on her website. Instead, she should just list the actual size. To do otherwise is misleading; as it is now, her website is lying to customers. Apparently using the word "lying" was a mistake, because she immediately devolved into a particularly childish and sarcastic tirade -- yes, she'd obviously been lying to all her customers for the last 35 years, she was an evil liar, she should apologize to everyone for all the lying and stealing she'd done, and she was going to come to my house to take the bouquet back. I repeated that I wasn't looking for a refund; I'd already given the flowers to my wife. So she muttered something I won't repeat, and hung up on me. I'd like to point out here that at no time did I lose my temper, raise my voice, or do anything that I'd consider rude or inappropriate. Running a business is hard, and screaming customers just make it that much more impossible. But this was the worst single customer service phone experience I've ever had. The thing is: I don't know if she was just having a bad day, or what was going on with her. It's a rough time for everyone right now, and small businesses have it particularly bad. There could be a thousand reasons for her behavior. I'm also not looking to torpedo a local business -- I like to support local if I can, which is why I ordered from there in the first place. But I can't overlook that I ordered flowers online, got something far smaller than the thing I paid for, and was mistreated and insulted when I asked politely for an explanation. I'd have to recommend against ordering anything from here unless you're right there, at the counter, and can verify that it's what you ordered and expected. And even then, I'm certainly not going to give her any of my future business. read more

Montclair florist appears to be fantastic at dealing with last minute orders. The day before last Valentine's Day I called just as they were closing to order flowers to be delivered to my wife's workplace. First, I was very impressed that they were able to accomodate me even though the order was so last minute -- not surprisingly they have hundreds of orders for Valentine's Day. Second, they were able to get the order to my wife's workplace ahead of schedule. Third, the price was very reasonable -- only $60 for a beautiful made to order bouquet. Finally, and most imprtantly, my wife *loved* it! She said it's one of the prettiest bouquets she's ever received. I will deifnitely use Montclair Florist again! NOTE FROM WIFE: This arrangement was SO amazing! It had a mixture of orchids (!), roses, lillies, gerbera daisies, sweet peas, and more, all in an elegant square vase with palm leaves around the stems. It also had a bunch of tiny and unique rocks at the bottom that I will use again. My husband is the best!!!! So is Montclair Florist! read more

She took down all my information and repeated it to make sure it was all correct. There was a reasonable charge for delivery. The flowers arrive, in water, in a sturdy box, all covered up and in a shady place. My mom was so surprised and said even the Rose buds were tightly closed and it was beautiful. Saw their gorgeous work at the Claremont, then decided to use them for deliveries for the East Bay. They are really nice over the phone, and very informative about what they have in stock ("peonies are running this much per stem, but we can do something similar with this..."). I sent a bouquet to a friend at John Muir hospital and they were totally on top of address info, etc. -- okay, that seems like a no-brainer for a florist, but I appreciated the fact that they were trying to make my life a little easier. I was recently the lucky recipient of an arrangement from Montclair Florist. The arrangement was gorgeous - freesia, roses, Shasta daises and who knows what else. The sender must've alerted the florist to my color preferences since these lovely flowers were in all different shades of pinks. The vase is also nice - very heavy glass and wrapped with a leaf inside so you can't see the stems - I love that touch. I had forgotten about them until some arrangements for an event I was working arrived and were a HIT! Teacher appreciation week found us catering lunch for 65, the centerpieces arrived from Montclair Florist and were amazing. Lilies, weepy lavender, greens, mums etc made for stunning centerpieces!Piedmont's colors are purple and white so that was the theme. Maria at Montclair Florist makes a small bouquet for my small Business in Montclair every 2 weeks! She is the sweetest and her flowers last almost forever since she goes to the market every morning, so they are always fresh! I used to source my flowers at the shop from Trader Joe's, they would die in a couple days! But Maria's flowers stay pretty and fresh with regular water change, for over 2 weeks sometimes!! Her prices are very reasonable and worth every penny, I always try to tip her for her service, but she always graciously declines. I placed an order two days ahead for a bouquet on Valentine's Day. When I got there shortly before closing on Valentine's Day, the bouquet was not ready. Had to wait 20 minutes or so. The bouquet was to have roses in it and not to have any yellows. When they finally handed me the bouquet, it had roses in it alright--yellow roses. Not only were they not red roses, which would be what you'd expect unless otherwise discussed, they were the exact color I'd asked not be in the bouquet. For Valentines Day! DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE EVER!!! I am so appalled by the service at Montclair Florist that I've signed up for Yelp to create a post. After a recommendation from the Claremont, I decided to give them a try for a simple white bouquet of hydrangeas and roses with some green mixed in. The woman on the phone asked if I'd like lilies and peonies, I agreed to calla lilies and she assured me that peonies would be beautiful. I agreed to have it filled to the $120 point and confirmed delivery details. Sounds like a pretty simple order, right? To my chagrin - I received a picture from the recipient a few hours later of an arrangement that had two hydrangeas, a few roses, a few calla lilies, NO peonies, and random flowers like snapdragons, gerbera daisies, and cymbidium orchids to name a few. This random hodgepodge of flowers looked like a cheap bunch I would see (but not buy) at a bodega. Clearly, this could not be the right order - so I called in to see what happened. The saga gets worse: FIRST, they are not apologetic as they confirm that this is indeed the order I "placed" (whatever happened to the first rule of customer service?) and tried to blame ME as the culprit (see FOURTH complaint below) SECOND, they indicate that there was never a way to get peonies into the bunch as they do not have any (WHY oh WHY would you offer me something that you don't have?) - even worse- the person who apparently tried to sell me into the peonies is the person who buys the flowers for the shop and should know what they have! THIRD, they took comfort in the "fact" that they filled my order to "value"... I'm sorry- I don't care if you give me $120 worth of flowers, if you don't fill to my actual order, then you've failed. I mean if you sent $120 worth of carnations, it doesn't quite hit the mark now does it? FOURTH, they tried to blame me for the order - "why didn't you specify that you only wanted mostly hydrangeas, roses and lilies?" (what part about fill my order with only the four flowers we agreed upon did you NOT understand?) FIFTH, their suggested fix is we can replace/swap it out -- on what planet would you go to a recipient, pry the arrangement just received out of their hands and give them something different - you've already wasted my time and now you're going to waste theirs (I don't care if you want to tell her she got the wrong bouquet - you should just send a whole new bouquet and comp it). SIXTH, she kept insisting that my sister would really enjoy it because she is sure it is lovely and really fresh. I'm sorry, but if you EF up my order, you can't placate yourself by patting yourself on the back. "I'm sorry there was a mis-communication, but I'm sure we did a fabulous job." No, if you didn't do the job right, you did not do a fabulous job. read more

I just had a really great customer experience with Sue from Montclair Florist. I ordered flowers yesterday morning and requested delivery for same day at appx. 5:30 p.m. when the recipient would be home from work. Sue replied with "no problem" and was very cheery and pleasant to talk with. Unfortunately, I gave her the incorrect address for the recipient and didn't have their phone #. Sue called me at 5:30 pm and said that the address I gave her didn't exist. We agreed to both work on getting the correct address (she looked up name in phone book and I attempted to text and email friends in hopes of finding the correct info. She phoned me back and said she had the number and called it, but no one answered. I was able to get a mobile number, but also no response. She said she would keep trying and if nothing, then her husband, Rosario (also the delivery guy) would bring the flowers back and we'd try again this a.m. She told me she'd be in touch with an update. She phoned me this morning to tell me that after several more attempts (into the evening last night and I suspect well past their closing time), they were able to reach a person at the recipient's residence and then, Rosario re-delivered the flowers. I was really impressed with Sue's endeavor to make sure the flowers were delivered to the correct residence and her communication with me throughout the process. She was really sweet and never sounded out of patience, even though the error was completely mine for not having the correct house number. While a $ amt less than $100 isn't huge, and wouldn't have been the end of the world for a random person to get a bouquet, but, my friend would have never received her bouquet and special note and I would have never known. I wonder how often that happens? Well no need to worry about that at Montclair Florist. Recently I needed to put together some flowers for a co-worker/friend's bridal shower at work. I walked in off the street at lunchtime for some browsing. They were incredibly helpful, friendly, and reasonably priced. I needed to take a hands on look at what flowers would go together well, in the colors we needed for the shower. Not only did they give multiple suggestions, they did not push me to purchase more flowers than I needed. They informed me I only needed to come in a week before to order, and let me go without trying to sell me on the spot!
