I was admitted through the emergency room, and the care I received was mostly very good. My only complaint is one night when the nurse wasn't responding after I pressed the call button. I have supported the Monroe hospital system for almost as long as I've required regular medical care. At one point I went into the emergency room about 15 years ago and had to have my appendix removed. It was a fantastic experience, all things considered. I've also used them for primary care for a long time. IU Health is a beast that should be avoided at all costs. Monroe can handle X-rays, MRIs and a number of other services. The building size is modest, which is great for people like me who can't walk very far comfortably. They are always friendly, and the NPs I've used for my primary care have been fantastic. Support them every chance you get. The services are great, and we need to keep them going. read more

I came to Monroe Hospital in severe abdominal and chest pain. I could barely walk and collapsed to the ground because I couldn't stand. The pain was so intense I genuinely thought I was going to die. After an EKG, my experience went downhill. An older male staff member undressed me with the door open, compromising my privacy. He then attempted to draw blood. It was extremely painful -- I was screaming and crying -- and when he forcefully pulled the needle out, I told him I could not tolerate another attempt and asked for someone else. He told me that if I refused him, I would "be waiting in pain." I then laid in a room for over an hour and fifteen minutes crying, moaning, and vomiting from the pain. No one checked on me. Staff were laughing and joking in the hallway while I was in visible distress. When I pressed the call button, it took several minutes for someone to respond. I told the nurse I was in unbearable pain and that something was seriously wrong. I was told, "I'm not going to listen to you complain," and he walked out. I left immediately and went to IU Health Bloomington Hospital. There, I was treated right away. An ultrasound showed my gallbladder was swollen with stones. My white blood cell count and liver levels were elevated. I required pain medication, nausea medication, further imaging, and may now need admission and possible surgery. This was a serious medical emergency. The lack of urgency, compassion, and professionalism at Monroe Hospital could have resulted in severe complications. No patient in that level of pain should be dismissed, humiliated, or ignored. read more

I want to preface that the care and communication from providers was excellent. I was visiting the area and was not aware of the location only that I needed care for a temporary problem. I felt heard and respected. If I had to say anything bad was that I asked for water as I had an allergic cough due to severe ear infection. The nurse said he would get me water but it never came. Otherwise I am very happy with the outcome of my visit and felt very grateful that I did not have to wait forever to get care. Will speak favorably of my experience to family that lives in the area. Until today, I had nothing but accolades for Monroe Hospital and all employees I've met. I've been to this hospital for numerous scans this year, due to lung cancer. Today I'm in the ER and I didn't wait an unreasonable time to see the doctor. I liked Dr. Hammerstein, too. But now, it's been another 20 minutes for a prescription. (They only provide paper scripts, no electronic scripts sent to your pharmacy.) When I asked, half-joking, if they forgot about me, this snotty, fat blonde sitting behind a desk was rude AF. She spoke to me like I was 5 years old and she was hot-shit. I'm so angry I'm leaving without my script. So what if it's Friday and I'll have to go to IU urgent care to get my medicine. If not, I could go to jail for assaulting fat blondie. read more

In December 2023 I had fallen and was bleeding heavily from a head abrasion. I was seen by an NP(?) within 10 minutes of arrival at the ER. The wound was cleaned and judged as an abrasion not requiring stitches. An MRI was ordered, administered and evaluated. The whole experience was very positive and took less than 2 hours. The personnel were very professional and caring. The process was easy, efficient, and positive. I have used Monroe for a double hip replacement back in 2013, multiple mammograms, and a colonoscopy. When choosing a hospital I will always prefer Monroe. The chaos of the IU Health hospital is the main reason I go to Monroe. read more

DO NOT go here if you are looking for mental wellness care. The staff nurses treated me like I was a joke. The nurse took my history down on a PAPER TOWEL. Instead of redirecting me to a behavioral health unit, while I was clearly in an emergency situation, they gave me OTC sleep aids and suggested I sleep it off. One doctor even said that if I could pronounce my name and fill out forms I must not be dealing with a mental illness. The receptionists were extremely rude as well and practically shooed me out. Nobody offered to help me, so I had to take an uber ride home in the middle of the night. read more

My daughter's corneas had some nasty scratches, but it was late evening so I took her in to the emergency department at Monroe Hospital. We checked in and sat in the waiting room for nearly 8 hours when I gave up and took her to IU Bloomington. She was never treated, never trialed, no care was ever received, we never saw so much as a nurse. Still received a thousand dollar bill. By the time we got to IU Bloomington both corneas were infected and there was a risk of vision loss. And this awful hospital says I owe them money for NEGLECTING my child. That bill will never be paid and I nor my children will ever return. I asked for an itemized bill and have yet to receive one and this was months ago. They can't send one, unless now it costs a thousand dollars to sit in a waiting room while damage is being done to my child's vision, in which case, I hope they enjoy that lawsuit.​ read more

Took granddaughter on the advice of respiratory therapist to check out a 7 week cough, strep and sinus infection that didn't respond to Amoxicillin. Couldn't get her in to pediatrician, urgent cares full...Nurses and techs at this hospital are very kind, hospital is clean but Dr. Sansone is a bad joke. Walked in with an attitude and proceeded to tell us she was just a kid with a cough. Said he doesn't believe in antibiotics, doesn't prescribe them and he and his kids don't even take them. Said her lungs and ears were clear. Thankfully decided to take her to urgent care later the same day where Dr. said she had angry ears and that there is something wrong with a kid with a 7 week wet cough and fatigue. Tested for mono, and was incensed ER didn't use available tools to test blood for infections. Started her on a different antibiotic and the cough is already sounding better. Dr. there also recommended a follow up appt with pediatrician in 7-10 days for additional care/labs. If you go to Monroe, avoid Dr. Sansone like the plague! read more

What an absolute nightmare of an experience. My husband hasn't been feeling well for some time now and yesterday it got to the point that he felt he needed medical attention. I urged him to go to Monroe over IU because of the great experiences I've had in their ED in the past. Well what a mistake that was. He wasn't even given the proper standard of care while he was there. He was treated rudely by staff, ignored when trying to tell the doctor what was wrong and completely brushed off and rushed out like he was just someone there for a stomach ache who was wasting their time. On top of that he was made to wait for over an hour in the waiting room with others who were there because they claimed to be exposed to covid positive family members. Why on earth would you not have people like that separated from your other patients!? I will definitely be using IU health over Monroe after the experience he had last night. I understand everyone is over worked and understaffed in the medical industry right now, but that's no excuse to completely throw out the standard of care a sick patient deserves, especially when you're going to stick them with an expensive bill for doing literally nothing to help them. read more

I was transferred here from another hospital for an emergency surgery, upon arrival the house supervisor was who I had my first experience and she was wonderful and she checked in with me through out the length of my stay. Tressa was her name and she was excellent. The surgery staff and dr tolpogus was excellent as well. The night shift was great except the care tech acted like it bothered her to "do her job" rn Ashley was very helpful. The rn during day shift was rude and would take forever to answer a call light, I timed it once and it took 45 minutes! Cameron and heather were very helpful care techs! read more

When I broke my arm, it was going to be an overnight wait for Bloomington Hospital. Monroe Hospital opened up a surgery for me so I could get the surgery done that day. I broke my arm in the morning, the doctor operated on me that afternoon, and he made the IU basketball game that evening. The nurses were amazing, and I have a fixed arm that has been great ever since. read more

I will note that Monroe Hospital does have Good Patient Care, is clean, and the actually doctors and nurses are friendly and courteous. Monroe Hospital has the worst most horrible and terrible accounting and billing as well as followup customer service from administration I have ever experienced. They don't seem to care. (Monroe Hospital Financial Department)...Whoever heard of having an actual new account number/ID number for every patient each time they visit your facility...and not linking them...so I have 19 separate visits...I have paid them $250 since 3/6/2013...(sent them the proof of these payments)...I set payments up under the original invoice/ID I was sent...assuming like most organizations this was my customer ID number...under my first patient account...automatic payments each month for my co-payment (in fact i reached my out of pocket and they should owe me!!!)...they have credited every payment to that original PAID ACCOUNT...they have not linked any accounts...in fact they have marked my other accounts past due and evidently sent them to collections (I have the collection statements which is what prompted my phone calls)...However the lady (Deb) claims they haven't done this (the statements have been scanned and sent to her as well...they can't seem to understand my reasoning and logic that they are in the wrong...they keep telling me it is my responsibility to make sure they run their hospital/billing/financial department correctly...Oh did I mention that they also try consistently to bill me for the amount above the allowable contract with my insurance company...which for those of you that don't know is highly ILLEGAL!!!! I like the care I receive but I am really thinking I am going to have to go to IU Health from now on...they know that you give a patient a central ID number and then bill them with separate invoice numbers that are linked to that ID...how hard is that! I wonder how many others have been sent to collections for their oversight. Here are some direct quotes from my conversations with Deb, the "Financial Counselor": She enjoys talking down to people, not taking accountability for situations, and employing the use of phrases such as "you claim to have paid us", "making sure payment gets to the right account is your responsibility", "why do you think we put a patient number on the statement", "don't you understand", "it isn't my job to match up the number you put on the check with your name in the system," and "do you understand how long it took me to look up all the invoices with the payments,". I think she needs to understand that indeed it is your organization's responsibility to ensure that payment sent is matched with the patient. I think it would also be very beneficial if you checked into an updated system that could streamline the process. A single patient ID perhaps with separate case numbers for each visit may help keep this problem from occurring. I shudder to think how many other patients are in the same boat and how many other patients have been sent to collection because they have set up automatic bank drafts under their original invoice from your facility. read more

If you value bed side manner, compassion, consideration, and actual HUMANE treatment... DO NOT go to this hospital. I am a survivor of a completely severed aorta and have several health complications from other injuries and prior surgeries. I was treated like less than a human or an animal of that matter when brought to the ER here. They left me laying in pain and nauseated for 45 minute with my family trying to get back to be with me. The doctor treated me as I were a drug feign there for a fix when i had been ill for over a week without being able to ingest more than a few pop-cicles. THey then asked what medications i was on and my history. I told them the mile long list and told them what meds did and didnt help with my symptoms. This was a "Sin" apparently to them... I was forced to endure another a hour of nausea because they insisted that I "try" to let the medication they forced me to take to work. They finally realized and listened that the med wasnt helping and gave me another form. Needless to say, I am writing letters of complaint to the CEO and Chief of Medicine here. They need to learn the true meaning of HEALTH"CARE"! read more

"Dr." Mark White came in and basically just asked what pills my boyfriend wanted for an abscess tooth, didn't even open his mouth to evaluate what was going on. Hell, he didn't even listen to his lungs correctly. There was a nurse there, her name is Dee. She has no empathy at all, acted like a complete bitch towards my boyfriend the whole time. I have waited over 4 months to write this review to be sure that I was not writing in the heat of the moment or as a result of emotional and physical exhaustion. I want to be fair but honest. I've had a number of experiences with Monroe Hospital over the years and have gone there when I wanted to be seen quickly in the ER. In the past, I've always been treated with respect and care. I especially don't want those who are seeking care at this facility to be fearful of being there; however, I think it is also important for people to know that there is a risk of unfounded attacks on family members, a CEO who will not interact with patients and their families nor lend her support or compassion, and one nurse, at least, who violates patient trust (and potentially HIPA) and who administers drugs against patient's wishes. This is what my family and I endured while my husband was a patient at Monroe Hospital. Because of this experience, I will never, ever set foot on the grounds of this place again because I can't trust that I or my loved ones will be treated with respect and dignity. We are still dealing with the emotional fallout from this experience. Never once has anyone from the hospital followed up with us to see how we were doing. I never before feared being a patient in a hospital; I do now as a result of what happened during my husband's week-long stay at Monroe Hospital. Monroe Hospital is no longer a place where I feel I would receive safe, supportive, caring, treatment. read more

I wrote a review of the treatment or the lack there of and have heard nothing about it! I went to my doctor today and she wanted to know as I did why I spent an entire day and received no treatment of any kind and left the hospital in much the same condition as I came in with. They gave me a CAT Scan and said the results were normal, When I questioned the doctor about why I received no treatment for what appeared to be bronchitis He said do you want to stay in the hospital, I said no! He then wanted change one of my prescriptions and again I said no, I would talk to my doctor about that, He then turned on heel and disappeared down the hall! I have had one of the worst experiences i can imagine at this facility, upon meeting the E.R. Doctor he was dry did not look at his patient once during his first trip in the room, then was rude and loud when asked why we were still waiting after two hours of not seeing anyone come through the door to check on us or let us know that bloodwork had been sent across town to be checked at a real hospital. Next- after asking for something for pain he treated us as if we were drug seeking. I will not suggest anyone use this place! read more

The admitting person and the RN were great. When the doctor (Mitchell) came in he was condescending and just acted like I was bothering them. They are definitely faster than IU Health. My blood pressure was very high when I got there and then started to drop until he came in, then it spiked again. read more

Congratulations, Monroe Hospital! You have effectively ruined my faith in your organization. I, at one time, felt you could be a nice alternative to an overly crowded IU Health, however, after the treatment, or lack thereof, that my mother received today...I will never recommend your hospital to anyone. My mother was diagnosed with Type A Flu at Urgent Care and was instructed to go to the ED immediately if her symptoms persisted or worsened. She was compliant and I took her to Monroe ED. We were met by a nurse who spoke down to us and acted as if we were ignorant (my mother is a nurse) and a provider, Dr. Baker, who treated her as nothing more than a drug seeker. No imaging, no labs, no medications. She was told that the provider at Urgent Care gave her wrong information and that she needed to "tough it out" a few more days. No compassion, no conversation. Just a cold provider and a degrading nurse. I couldn't be more disappointed in this ED. It's unfortunate, as I was hoping there would be a successful and qualified competitor for IU Health. read more
