If you're coming from the Shrewsbury end of the Blue Line, this is a convenient stop for accessing Delmar Loop without going to Forest Park station and waiting for a Red Line train. It's just a few blocks. Skinker takes its name from Skinker Boulevard which in turn is named for Adam L. Skinker, a prominent early 20th-century Saint Louis civic figure and real‑estate developer. He was involved in subdivision development and land assembly on the western edge of the city at a time when Saint Louis was expanding toward Forest Park and the county line. The station is located between Forest Park-DeBaliviere (inbound) and University City-Big Bend (outbound). The trains run down the center of the station, which means the doors will open on the right side of the train. There is a mezzanine level with a bridge inside the station for transferring from one side to the other. The station is located in the Skinker Tunnel which itself is well below the ground with both stairs and elevator to reach the surface level. Beyond the station in both directions, the train returns to teh surface. The station seemed decently lit this afternoon. There are ticket vending kiosks and while no one was checking tickets today, I'm sure that they do that occasionally. Don't get caught! [Review 418 of 2026 - 502 in Missouri - 25601 overall]

An iconic site for any St Louis visitor No visit to St…read more Louis would really be complete without taking the tram ride to the top of the Gateway Arch. We purchased a package deal that included tickets for the tram ride to the top. This begins at the base of the Arch next to the museum exit inside the Gateway Arch Visitor Center. When purchasing your tickets, you'll choose whether to depart from the north or south tram. Both reach the same observation area, but each serves one half of the top, so you'll only have access to the viewing windows on your assigned side. Before boarding, visitors walk through an interesting preshow area along the concrete walls of the Arch, where displays explain its construction and history. When your departure time arrives, attendants organize everyone into groups of five before leading you to the small tram cars. The ride to the top takes about four minutes in a compact capsule that seats five people. The cars are clean and fascinating from an engineering standpoint, but they are definitely small. Anyone who is claustrophobic, uncomfortable in tight spaces, or particularly tall or large should keep this in mind before purchasing tickets. Once at the top, you'll find an observation area with a sloping floor that follows the curve of the Arch. The unique windows provide beautiful views of downtown St. Louis on one side and the Muddy Mississippi River and Illinois on the other. After spending time enjoying the scenery and taking photographs, you simply board the tram for the ride back down. Overall, this was a very unique experience and one that I would recommend to fellow travelers visiting St. Louis. It offers great views, interesting engineering, and the opportunity to stand inside one of America's most famous monuments that has really withstood the test of time well. Enjoy!

It was the one of the first bridges to employ steel as opposed to wrought iron. It's foundation was 100 feet below water level a big challenge in the late 1800s. The 520 foot center arch was the longest span at the time of construction using a cantilever suspension to build, a method which would later be used in the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge had to be elevated to accommodate the steamboat captains who wanted to keep residents dependent on their services. They thought that it would not be possible to build such a lofty bridge. The City of St. Louis, however, wanted to capture more railroad traffic which necessitated construction of a bridge. Eads earned multiple patents for his innovations during construction. The bridge was dedicated by President Ulysses S. Grant. Testing of safety was done by locomotives. An elephant even walked across the bridge to guarantee pedestrian safety. That must have been a sight to see. The bridge cost $10 million to build. Unfortunately many of the railroads boycotted using it due to the tolls. It was then sold for 20 cents on the dollar. This led to the collapse of the Bank of Missouri. Many were indicted following the largest bank failure in the U.S. at that time. Today, the Eads Bridge is still considered an engineering pioneering landmark. While being constructed The NY Times called it the World's Eighth Wonder. It is quite a remarkable and beautiful historic bridge that still helps people cross the mighty Mississippi River.

Milles conceived the sculpture as embodiment of the freedom and primeval force of the waterways of the Great Mississippi Valley and he thought of the grouping as a marriage or festival celebrating the coming together of these great waters. The Scotts are depicted standing close, holding their heads high, their eyes directed not only Archward & across the Mississippi River, but toward a horizon of freedom in which they believed enough to one day finally see. Dred & Harriet Scott were American-born slaves of African descent, filed suit against Irene Emerson for their freedom. After several appeals & new lawsuits, the Dred Scott case reached the Supreme Court. The final verdict stated that Scott was still a slave, still the property of his masters & that he was neither a free man nor a US citizen. The decision outraged many & was integral in leading the United States to the brink of civil war.

One of the more famous landmark Supreme Court rulings is known as the Dred Scott Decision. In 1857,…read moreit was decided that neither Dred Scott nor any other person of African ancestry could claim citizenship in the United States, and therefore Scott could not bring suit in federal court under diversity of citizenship rules. Moreover, Scott's temporary residence outside Missouri did not bring about his emancipation under the Missouri Compromise, as the court ruled this to have been unconstitutional, as it would "improperly deprive Scott's owner of his legal property." Yeah, that happened and it was one of the contributing factors that led to the United States Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and the post-Civil War Reconstruction Amendments - the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth amendments - nullified the decision. This statue was installed in front of the Old Courthouse and dedicated on June 8, 2012. The location of the Old Courthouse serves as a reminder of the place where Dred and Harriet Scott began their legal fight for freedom. The plaque at the base reads, "Dred and Harriet Scott filed suit for their freedom at this courthouse in 1846. Their case reached the United States Supreme Court and was decided in 1857. The court ruled that the Scotts and all African Americans were not citizens of the United States. Opposition to the decision was one of the causes of the Civil War and led to the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution. The Scotts' struggle for freedom stands as a defining moment in the history of the Civil Rights Movement. Dedicated June 8, 2012. Gift of the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation. Harry Weber, sculptor.
