Crossing the Jefferson Barracks Bridge today felt like one of those classic Saint Louis river moments, the kind where the Mississippi reminds you just how much of the region's identity is tied to moving from one side to the other. Saint Louis is, of course, a river city and there are a bunch of bridges that are all useful for crossing the river and your choice depends on where you're headed. I've been on the Chain of Rocks Bridge north of the city, the Stan Musial, and the McKinley and Clay bridges near downtown. Today's visit had me south of the city and heading south into Illinois, so it was the Jefferson Barracks bridge as I was on I-255 and US-50.
The Jefferson Barracks Bridge is a pair of twin tied‑arch bridges carrying Interstate 255 and U.S. Route 50 between Saint Louis County, Missouri and Monroe County, Illinois. Each spans runs about 4000 feet with a 909-foot arch over the shipping channel, giving it a clean, modern arch profile that stands out from the older truss bridges elsewhere on the river. The westbound span opened in 1983, and the eastbound span followed in 1992, though the second span had a memorable hiccup when a crane dropped a section into the river and the damaged portion had to be rebuilt.
There's a bit of history baked into this crossing. Before these arches existed, the route was served by a steel truss toll bridge built in 1942 that opened in 1944, with tolls lasting until 1959 when the construction bonds were finally paid off. That older bridge was demolished in 1985, clearing the way for the modern tied-arch pair. Today there is no toll and the crossing feels like a straightforward part of the beltway rather than a special event.
Traffic this evening was very light heading south and the bridge handled it smoothly. It's not the flashiest or most dramatic crossing in the region, but it's a reliable and well-designed piece of infrastructure with a clean view of the river and a bit of drama in its construction history. A solid southern Mississippi River crossing and one that does it without fuss.
