I know, I know. What the fuck are you doing reviewing the cops? They're not a business (or ARE…read morethey?) Look folks, since I moved back to my hometown, after fifteen or so years of living in other wonderful areas, I have been mugged once, my car has been broken into twice, and now, to top it all off, my house has been robbed. When I get shot, I'll probably just laugh and shrug it off. It's da 'Lou, right? Anyhoo, we were robbed in the morning, and when I returned home from work to find my front door unlocked and my living room tossed, I immediately called 911. Two unis showed up, guns drawn and ready to kick ass. Of course, the thieves were long gone, but the show was impressive. The two officers and the crime lab guy were all that they should have been: empathetic, friendly, concerned, and informative. (Just as a point of reference, when my apartment was broken into in Chicago, while I was IN it, the friendly Windy City cop told me I should have yelled at the robber and pulled a knife from my kitchen drawer on him. Sage advice indeed.) STLPD answered my questions, did a complete search of the house, and treated me like a decent human being (which I can be.) What I'm saying is that I have had more than a few positive interactions with STLPD's finest. I know they're are bad apples in every bunch. I'm glad I haven't had to deal with them yet.

I don't get why we have cops and I am a Republican. 90%of you just sit and try to catch speeders…read morewhich really, who are they hurting except the liberal Toyota and Subaru driver that sit in the left lane and drive less than the speed limit. But you never see them pulled over for impeding traffic. Then when you call a cop for an actual problem, like 6 of them show up and only one actually does something. And then a hour later they all leave with to my knowledge, nothing resolved. I think I would rather have that overly fat/ partially dork hall monitor from high school show up and help me. At least they take better notes and have some results. But I guess we pay cops just to shoot poor people and people they don't trust so I see why they are in St. Louis

The Fairview Heights police station is on Bunkum Rd in between the Fire House and the Library…read more It's not everyday I walk into the police station; at least not for me. When I think of the police station, I see myself walking into a building full of officers at their desk doing paperwork, drinking coffee and hauling in criminals (apparently I've seen too many crime shows). Well to my surprise that wasn't the case. I actually walked into this large hallway, extremely quiet.. wasn't too sure what to do. To the right is the window for the records department, to the left, a window to dispatch. On the windows there's a sign "Dispatch can not hear through the window. Please pick up phone to your right for police services". Okay! An officer answered the line, I explained I needed to make a police report. She took my name, number, address and said she would send a officer to me. Wait.. what?!? I'm in the lobby! If I knew I could just call and have a officer come to me to make a report, I would've! Instead she sent a officer to come and take my report in the lobby. While waiting I was able to observe the bulletin board with helpful information to citizens in Fairview Heights. There's a MedReturn drug collection unit, where you can drop off unwanted prescription. If you need a gun lock, just ask, they will provide 1 free of charge. Better safe then sorry! Even though it looks empty, there are people there behind those dark mirror windows. At the end of the day... if I had to go back I would, by I'm hoping I don't need too!

Granted, there's parts of it that's a shell of itself, but what urban area isn't. My BF's family is from EStL and surrounding areas, so I visit frequently. Contrary to what people think, it's actually not much going on on that side. The South End, Alorton and Bond Ave. are relatively quiet. I've read articles and been apart of conversation about renovations and gentrification concerning the metro east. I really hope it happens, bc a lot of estl residents have to go 30 minutes out their way for quality produce and pharmacies. They deserve opportunity and convenience just like the citizens of the metropolitan area of stl. There's so much character across the bridge. Many historic buildings, mansions and homes just need some preservation and tlc. Downtown East St. Louis, especially, could once again be the prize of town. I just hope the lot of you, like I have, can block out the negativity and look beyond the perception.

I'm giving this place 4 stars because we earned street cred from the locals when we casually mentioned that we spent some time in ESTL. -1 star because I spent most of the time praying that the car wouldn't break down and we wouldn't get shot/raped/killed.
