This Shaw's is tiny and dirty. The clientele were especially rough and menacing, and once again (like we get at every Shaw's!) stared at us like they had never seen a trans person in their lives. The thing that really struck us about all the cashiers is how miserable they all looked. After we checked out we walked past a gauntlet of three empty registers with cashiers lazily staring at us, knowing we didn't belong there. Silly us, we were happy to find a grocery store with a name we recognized- Mom and Pop places don't have corporate policies on discrimination and often aren't smart enough not to tell people to go to hell when they complain. That said, I never, ever have had a good experience at Shaw's. This was the smallest, the dirtiest, and the creepiest one I've been to yet, and I think this is largely determined by its location- Woodsville, New Hampshire.

They didn't have any fresh ribeye when I went (curses!) but they had some frozen tomahawks that looked like they might as well have been wagyu. The marbling on them was incredible, the ribeye from the local butchers where I'm at in the Shenandoah Valley completely paled in comparison. But we were cooking steak that day and I didn't want a frozen one, so we grabbed a couple New York Strips (or whatever their actual name is) that had marbling like I'd never seen in that cut. Cooked them in a cast iron over fire and coals with some butter, fresh garlic, salt and pepper and boy, did they just melt in your mouth - if you'd told me it was tenderloin, I would've never doubted. Really wanted to go back and grab those frozen tomahawks to take home with me but it just didn't work out like that, now I'm back home and just woke up the next morning and I can't stop thinking about 'em. We had been planning for months to stop at Eastern Main Market Deli in Vermont for sandwiches and a…read morepicnic, and were excited when we finally arrived. The place looked great at first. Unfortunately, that changed quickly when I saw an employee loading the tomatoes and lettuce into the aluminum serving tins with her bare hands, directly scooping from a larger plastic storage bin. No gloves, no utensils. Just bare hands fully in the food. That's unsanitary and violates Vermont health code (§3-301.11), which prohibits bare-hand contact with ready-to-eat food. We left immediately without ordering. Completely unacceptable and disappointing.
