A friend who loves a couple of dishes here brought us to this diner for lunch. We understood…read moreexactly why she likes this place so much because the food was delicious. We ordered the chicken tender plate which included fries and coleslaw. Plus a side salad with their house made Italian dressing. Yum yum! The chicken tenders were crispy and so were the fries. The coleslaw was light on the mayo and refreshing. The salad dressing was so tasty that we got a second side salad to split. Service was friendly and quick. Overall, a great meal and if we had room, we would have ordered the pie too!

My one friend ordered a cup of clam chowder and pancakes with a side of sausage (don't judge; it was brunch). He said the pancakes, which were a generous stack and fluffy were very good and the sausage patty was the best he'd ever eaten. He said the clam chowder was a little sweet; I don;t think he loved it. His wife and I both ordered the haddock fish sandwich. I'm from a small town where these are famous, so I'm kind of picky about them. She loved hers and I felt mine was pretty good, but didn't taste like haddock to me; tasted more like pollock, which I don't like. I'd come back here and get something else next time. It's a very nice establishment and the service is excellent.

We come home to Saint J. a few times a year and never miss an opportunity to dine at Wine Gate…read more Often times we order multiple entrees and sides and appetizers just so that we can sample everything. It's that good. Most of the year we live in San Francisco and have sooo many restaurants to choose from, I feel like we're pretty versed in multi ethnic choices that the city is famous for. My son is also a new chef and loves making critical assessments of the industry one Resturaunt at a time. We have a few favorite spots as you might imagine, though near top of the list is Wine Gate. Sure you'll encounter some bumps because the staff is human and the food is ALWAYS great. personally I've enjoyed the interactions with everyone who's ever taken my order. These folks get it right. This last time we were there they were out of fried green beans... does the restaurant deserve to be dinged for that? No. We should have made reservations earlier in order to secure some of them beans! They're that good! If you make something so tasty that it sells out in saint Johnsbury, you deserve 6 stars... however, that option was not available so we're going with 5. It's amazing how many good places there are to eat in town. In my opinion, the Wine Gate takes the top spot.

What we had: Fried green beans: the green beans were bright and crisp - like they would be if you picked them from your own garden. The breading was a light coating that was perfectly fried - they must have been taken from the fryer at just the right moment so not a spec of grease was retained or dripping off, just a consistent flavorful crunch. Roast beef sandwiches: these come in a couple of different varieties. I think the ones we tried were called the conductor and the steak and cheese. We got them panini style. The bread was toasted perfectly (not hard, just soft inside and slightly crispy on the outsides) and it did not get soggy at all. You could taste each delicious ingredient- nothing overpowered the sandwich. We had our paninis with onions rings and gate fries - these are like thin curly ribbons that are as light as air - also perfectly fried and not greasy. The service was spot on - we were greeted and seated as soon as we walked in. Our waitress was present without being overbearing. She even gave me a full bottle (wine bottle style!) of cold water when she saw how quickly I drank my first glass. The restaurant was beautiful and the music enjoyable (some kind of rock mix- Hotel California, Carry on My Wayward Son, etc). I'm definitely going back and plan to try everything on the menu.

If you haven't been to Papa Tirozzi's Italian Bakery in St. Johnsbury yet, stop what you're doing…read moreand go. Seriously. We drive over an hour--each way--on a busy Saturday morning just to get our hands on Tony's fresh donuts, bagels, and that perfect Friday night pizza. And it's worth every mile. Tony is one helluva chef. His baking skills? Impeccable. Whether it's a pastry or a pizza, everything is made fresh, with love, and you can taste it. His pizza is NEVER soggy, always hot, perfectly cooked, and topped with the freshest cheese. And the sauce... oh man, the sauce. I go in for lunch and order plain boneless wings just so I can dip them in Tony's red sauce instead of the usual dressings. That sauce is so good, I've been known to eat the leftovers with a spoon. It's rich and flavorful but never leaves you with that heavy, acidic regret some sauces do. It's just right. Now let's talk seafood. Yes, seafood. In Vermont. And it's some of the best I've ever had. Tony brings it in fresh, and when he's out, he's out--and I love that. It shows integrity. No "carryover specials," no shortcuts. Just honest, high-quality food made fresh and served with pride. The whole place is a gem. Anthony and Nancy are the kind of owners who care deeply about what they're serving and who they're serving it to. Donna's always there with a smile, helping out and keeping things moving. It feels like family when you walk through the door. If anyone says they're not awesome, I'd bet money it's a jealous competitor trying to figure out how to get a piece of the Tirozzis magic. Because let's be real--there's no faking what they do.
