The only real vinyl source in NJ, so plan ahead to spend a day there given their limited business hours.

Princeton Record Exchange is the kind of place that convinces you the past did not entirely lose…read moreit's argument with the present. Walking in makes me feel like I'm stepping back into the 90s, when music required effort and curiosity and a willingness to be wrong about what you thought you liked. They have everything. Records, tapes, CDs, and yes, even DVDs and VHS tapes, like artifacts from a civilization that understood patience. The selection is not just large, it is deep in the way a good conversation is deep. Jazz standards sit comfortably alongside obscure classical recordings. Somewhere nearby is a Japanese scream band you have never heard of but suddenly feel compelled to investigate. What makes the place work is the staff. These aren't people who ended up here by accident. They're here because they love music in a way that can't be faked. Ask for something familiar and they will find it. Ask for something strange and they will find it too, and then suggest three more things you didn't know you needed. It reminds me of the record stores I grew up in, back when discovering music felt like a small personal victory instead of an algorithm handing you a suggestion like a fortune cookie with better branding. Streaming may have made everything available, but it also made everything feel the same. This place resists that. It insists that music is still worth searching for, still worth holding in your hands, still worth talking about with another human being. Go here. Spend more time than you intended. Trade in something you hope others will discover as you once did. Leave with something unexpected. That's the whole point. Five stars, and I don't give them lightly, because enthusiasm is a finite resource and should be spent where it matters.

I live 90 mins away, but I have always gone to MSJ when in the Stroudsburg area visiting relatives…read more I started going in the 90s when the store was in a slightly different location on Main Street. It's a great store, with a very nice longtime owner, a helpful and friendly staff, and it has a relaxed atmosphere. MSJ is in a good neighborhood for lunch. They avoid all the mistakes that many other record stores make. I am speaking, of course of snotty, snobby, easily triggered owners/salespeople, or racks of lps too jammed or unpriced "bring to the counter for price"albums, etc. The records here are priced clearly and fairly, in my opinion*. *If you haven't shopped for records in recent years.. the demand for records has gone up drastically in recent years, and prices have gone up accordingly everywhere. You will not find 2008 (or 1974) prices on records in 2025. Especially on original pressings of the big classic rock albums by the top bands still played on the radio. I feel these guys are pretty fair, especially if you compare shopping at a store vs. shopping online, where you have to pay extra for shipping and really have nothing more than a vague hope that the LP will arrive in the stated condition. That aside. and back to the review... The more expensive items have sealed flaps, but you can open and inspect the vinyl at the counter. Less expensive records can be inspected at the rack if you do so carefully (i.e., not accidentally flinging the record across the store or getting yer greasy fingerprints 'em). Note: Record swapping will get you banned, you delinquents ;) - so don't be that person. Also, drinks are a no-no for understandable reasons. MSJ has tons of great vinyl in vg'+ or better condish. Rock is broken down alphabetically in various sections by price: $10 and up, $5, etc. There are boxes underneath these lp racks, but they request you get an employees help to access them. I never have time to crate dig, but I aspire to one day. I pick up a lot of records each visit, with very few exceptions (over 30 yrs) the albums and cds I've purchased have always been in VG+ or better, clean, etc. I have often traded in albums for store credit, and they are reasonable if you bring in decent records in nice condition that are not super common. I can't speak to how well they cover other genres since I mostly concentrate on rock - but there's a good amount of other stuff to peruse. If you go, I hope you find that gem you are looking for!

I waited a few weeks to pen this review just…read moreso I could try out the stack of records I bought and see what kind of condition they were in. All were PERFECT! How is that even possible?! I got 2 for $1 each (insane) and was almost positive they would be scratched and skip. Not the case. They played wonderfully. The others I got were not expensive at all and all also played wonderfully. When I stopped by they had a few crates outside, all for $1 a record. Not only did I find a Leo Sayer album in those bins, but also a old Greek movie soundtrack! I didn't know the artist and it ended up not really being my favorite, but I just thought it was so cool and couldn't resist, and for a dollar?! I am very sure my dad will get such a kick out of it when I show him. I walked out with those two gems plus an Abba, Smokey Robinson and Johnny Cash album and I think I spent like $20. I chatted with the owner a bit who was really friendly and helpful. Their old loc was near the corner of Somerset and Easton for all you RU alums that are wondering how you may have missed them all these years. They had some cool vintage/antique pieces and nick knacks, but not many (hence the %5) but I highly recommend a browse around if you are looking for affordable records or just want to browse around a great little shop. Thank you for the newest additions to my very thin collection!
