I was wary after all of the negative reviews and prepared to dislike this place. I loved it though & will be going back.
I have a daughter who is about to turn 2. We have talen her to Supercuts & Great Clips before but have gotten attitude from stylists because she just doesn't like getting her hair cut and she cries. Even nicer stylists have just managed to cut her bangs and they were unable to get to the back. Instead of dealing with the screaming kid & eyerolling girls at SC/GC, I had just snipped her bangs a couple times at home while she watched Elmo & left the back alone. Her hair really needed a nice cut though, so a few weeks before the party we called in on a weekday first thing in the morning. I got an appointment right away & we took her to the mall. When coming from the 91 freeway to the mall, go around Macy's and park in the back by the sign for Miguel's Jr. We had no trouble finding parking.
There were two children inside finishing getting hair cut and we did not have to wait long until it was my daughter's turn. There are cars or trucks that the kids can sit in for the haircut or regular chairs so that they can sit in a parents' lap. There were little TV's at each station showing a children's show (Octonauts in this case. Not too annoying, glad it wasn't Wow Wow Wubzy or one of those hideous Disney channel preteen sitcoms!)
The walls and each station are decorated with jungle plants and monkeys. It looks very nicely drawn/made and looks really fancy like something I would expect to see in Downtown Disney... the decor caught my daughter's attention immediately. She was excited about sitting in the truck & driving but when the haircut started her dad had to hold her in his lap. The stylist had some cool toy keychains to distract her and other small toys but unfortunately, she didn't go for it. What worked for our kid was him holding her legs so she could not kick the hairstylist and her waist so she could not get up, while at times when needed I stood behind dad & held her head against dad's chest. Try this position & maybe you too can get your tantruming child a nice hair cut.
The stylist was not friendly or chatty at all. Maybe she was apprehensive about our kid. I tried being friendly with her and pretty much got shut down, lol. But she DID give our daughter the best haircut she had ever had. My daughter's bangs are now neat and short like stylish little baby bangs which I LOVE. The stylist fixed the messed up part between her bangs & regular hair (Mommy's fault trimming hair at home). The hair in back was neatly and evenly cut. Her bangs look just a tiny, tiny shorter on one side but it may be a cowlick and it is not very noticeable, plus hey my daughter was kicking and crying! All in all she looked so neat and precious.
On the price list getting braids or hair coloring costs extra. However I think our stylist had extra time and she did a tiny braid on the side of my girl's head. She put in a bow and was about to add pink glitter but I politely declined that. I think she is too little for that and besides it would just get in her eyes.
We spent $18 plus tip on this haircut and considering this is the only time since she was a baby that the whole hair has been cut, as well as the nicest-looking bangs and easiest to style haircut she has ever had, I was so happy and impressed. I will be back. You might like it too.
DO:
--make an appointment. Stick with weekdays and early morning.
--bring an extra person to help if child is going to wrestle or tantrum. Ask a friend?
--I don't know the facts about the review where the lady says they charged for getting tangles out of a kid's hair. I would guess there is another side to the story there, I would probably charge too if it was really bad. Just use some detangling spray or leave in conditioner and comb it out before the cut with a detangling brush or comb.
--tell the stylist what you want or show a pic if you want something very specific & note that very detailed or precise haircuts such as feathering, layers, fades, etc cost extra on the price list. We were happy but we just asked her to cut it and how much to cut in back, didn't specify a style. I think some parents might not have liked getting a surprise 'do like we did.
--bring something which will distract your child. In our case (I hate doing this too) I had to give her my phone with a baby app on it.
--if you have a problem with the hair cut you are getting (such as asked for fauxhawk and they shaved it all into crew cut) STOP the haircut and call the manager over and tell them no you did not want that?? I mean is it that hard? read more
