While away on a weekend of debauchery with the other half's brass band, I found out that one of his…read morefriends from Uni lived in the area and that we were going to meet up with him for lunch. Right, so I was in charge of finding a place. To be honest, there's not much Yelp help in Perth, but I did find this place, which seemed reasonable (and cheap), and could probably take the six to eight of us who were going to go to lunch. (As the location I tried before was unlikely to be able to fit us all in). The pub is very nice! It seems like it's not really going to be there, but all of a sudden you happen upon it. It's also a pub that does table service. Which is a bit odd, but also kind of nice when you're waiting for people. Four people had pies (fish, steak and ale, and chicken and ham) and they all really seemed to like them. The other half and someone else had the Balmoral chicken (chicken with bacon and haggis), and they both raved about it. I had the tex-mex burger (a chili burger with onion rings, cheese, and a spicy sauce), and I was very impressed with how spicy everything was (one of my pet peeves is seeing "spicy" on the menu and the food not being at all spicy). The pub itself is quite spacious and has an outdoor seating area (if that's your thing, which in November, it's definitely NOT my thing). If we're back up for the band competition next year, we may have to stop in again.

We decided to make a night of it one night, and ordered food and drinks while waiting for a band to play. We were able to book a table and asked to be seated close enough to the stage so that we could enjoy the band. The band of the night was a band called Tunna (pronounced Ton-a) who were a Celtic band. My boyfriend is pretty particular about his music, but we quite enjoyed ourselves, even though we only stayed for half the set. It was a really loud set up, and we decided the next time we make our way to Perth and happen upon this place, we'll ask to be sat a bit farther away. The food was pretty spot on. We ordered some chicken wings to start which were absolutely delicious and it came with the best BBQ sauce I'd ever had. I meant to ask what kind it was, but forgot. For the mains, he ordered a burger with haggis on it, which came with chips and I ordered the gourmet chili dog, without jalapenos which also came with chips. We also ordered onion rings to share, which I thought were pretty gross. They reminded me of the frozen ones you can get out of Morrisons that are basically minced onion in a battered ring. Yick. All in all, the staff was pretty amazing. Very tentative and waited on us at our tables. That's the first time I'd ever been in to a pub and had table service. We had two different people wait on us, and it was pretty great. They had one of my favourite ciders available (spiced apple) and we also had a voucher for a fiver off, just for joining their email on their website. There is an outdoor patio area with loads of seating for eating and drinking. Pretty great once the weather gets a bit warmer! If we're ever in Perth again, I'm sure we'd stop back by Twa Tams! It's great time!

We drove up to the Highlands to spend a few days away from the hustle and bustle of London this…read moreChristmas and decided to break our journey with an overnight stop in Perth. We got a very cheap room at the local Travelodge so we thought we would treat ourselves to a tasty supper in the town. After sounding out B's pal who lives in Perth about good places to eat locally, and a bit of research from me on the internet, we decided that 63 Tay Street looked like it would tick all the right boxes. Although by no means the cheapest place to eat in town the a la carte menu looked like good value, perhaps that's the London perspective, and from the website I could see that 63 Tay Street boasted a fine selection of keenly priced wine. We had a quick drink in the lovely Greyfriars pub, just round the corner from the restaurant, and arrived at 7.30. I was a bit surprised to find that there was only one other table taken in the beautifully restored room which had been given a modern, elegant make over. No matter, it meant we had the full attention of the two lovely waitresses and we were soon sitting in a widow table with a glass of sherry and dealing with dilemma of what to order from the short but very sexy menu. It was most definitely one of those situations where you could have easily picked any of the dishes on offer and been happy but care was needed to ensure that you did not end up with a bad case of the food envy. First up was an amuse bouche which was a small cup of parsnip and whiskey soup with a dash of cream and a tiny haggis; just delightful and very tasty. It was then on to a really stunning plate which consisted of a leek and potato velouté topped with hot smoked salmon. I was calling this salmon 4 ways and it was a lovely taste sensation which showcased all that it best about this fine fish. Next was a palate cleanser of orange grenata which came with spiced oranges and dates. Unusual, but it was tasty and worked very well. It was then onto the main event; B had a very festive looking roast guinea fowl while I had the fillet of pollack with roast scallops. Both dishes looked as pretty as a picture on the plate and tasted even better. I don't think I have ever had scallops that had been cooked this well and much credit should go to the skill of the chef. We were both beginning to feel a little bit like stuffed turkeys by this point in the proceedings so we decided to share a delicious dessert of chocolate souffle, marmalade ice cream and whiskey custard. We washed all this food down with a lovely, very reasonably priced, bottle of Pouilly Fume which was every bit as good as the blurb on the beautifully constructed wine list suggested. In addition to the many interesting and well priced wines on the list it was good to see some local craft beers had been included along with suggestions for teaming them up with various dishes very forward thinking. We left around 10pm well fed and in high spirits, ready for a good nights sleep before pushing on up the East coast to our journeys end. I look foward to a return visit to 63 Tay Street when I am next in town.

The restaurant is small, intimate, quiet and ideal for romantic meals! The food is pricey, but you will not be disappointed with the quality of the dishes and the food is beautifully arranged. During evening service there are numerous courses - so go on an empty stomach to fully enjoy the yummy dishes!

And while the outdoor seating is lovely it is overshadowed by the unambitious decor inside. The lunch sandwiches are so-so. My high expectations were let down quite quickly once seeing their slightly more visually appealing than average coronation chicken sandwich. It tastes as good as it looks... just ok. The only redeeming factor for me is that they serve Suki Tea, which I love. But while they serve it in Suki Tea pots, the cups are something out of your gran's favourite cafe... you know the one, it usually serves generic tea bags in a small metal pot with a flat lid that doesn't pour properly. I'll continue to visit here on dry summer days for the outdoor seating, but I have no need to try the food again. Perth is a place of average expectations and Willows meets these.
