I'm not normally a sports bar kind of a person - I don't want to watch football (or sport in…read moregeneral) no matter how big and numerous the TV screens are, it's just not my cup of tea. On the other hand, I am pretty much always up for a game of pool or two, so a bit bar with a bunch of pool tables is actually interesting. The bar is really quite big. So big that on a Friday night at ~7pm it felt kind of empty, even though there were a few people around. We ordered a couple of beers (maybe just slightly pricier than average but not by much) and headed upstairs for a few rounds of pool. They have both American and British tables available. There's a £10 deposit to pay and then you pay by the hour for your time using the table, I think it was £5 an hour. I got beaten for 3 out of the 3 games that we played and while I'd like to blame Sportsters for that, I probably can't. During our games there was a little live music - a guy with a guitar was playing a few soft rock classics and he wasn't bad. It's perhaps a slightly odd thing to have in a sports bar but I thought it was a nice touch.

In addition to a decent selection of craft beers, there's a hefty cocktail menu. I tried the Ginger Tom Collins & it hit the spot. Just the right amount of ginger to pack a punch but not enough to be overpowering. The OH had a pint of draft beer & seemed happy enough. The low ceiling means it gets noisy even if it's not packed. There was a stag do, 2 birthday parties and hen group as well as some other folks. It was only just possible to hold a convo at normal volume & be heard. There's a decent sized courtyard out the back too but it was too wet & cold to try it out. I'd definitely visit again but maybe on a week night when it might be a little less noisy.

But no trace of that remains and The City Walls has been very well renovated indeed. When I first walked in, I thought it looked rather fancy! It's actually very large and spacious inside, with lots and lots of seating. The decor is warm, muted, comfortable and done to quite a high standard. There isn't a huge amount of character or atmosphere, but you can't have everything. We had a couple of drinks, which were very nice indeed, and ordered lunch from some grubby, sticky menus. The waiter took our order from the table, instead of us needing to go to the bar to order, which is a nice touch for a pub. The food was really tasty! Myself and my party all seemed to find it really good, decent quality and portion sizes. For the price, which was very reasonable, I don't think you could fault it much.

Looking at the menu, it looked pretty nifty so I figured I'd just eat here, and I was glad I did! The food is BBQ based - low and slow smoked pork, burgers, ribs, that sort of thing. There's been an explosion of this kind of food in Glasgow recently, I perhaps lay the blame at the feet of Adam Richman and Man vs. Food (my dream job too, it has to be said) but I'm not complaining! I opted for a pulled pork burrito with a side of spicy cheesy fries, and at £9 for the two, it was a steal. They arrived quickly, the fries in a basket and the burrito served on a platter. I was given cutlery before the food arrived, and what looked like a carrying case full of sauces, salt, pepper, kitchen roll and a great sight, a wet wipe! A great thing to have when eating what is esssentially finger food! There wasn't a long wait at all for the food; The burrito was lovely, really filled to the brim and fresh - but the spicy cheesy fries were stunning. Covered in jalapenos, cheese and a smoky, spicy BBQ sauce, they were quickly devoured. I could honestly have had a second helping of those on their own. A great first impression here, not just for the great food, but for the really helpful and friendly staff, and the attention to detail that the whole place shows. It's somewhere that I can see me returning to time and time again.

You're able to do a mobile order and pay for your food there, but if you want the discount you have to order from the bar and show your room key. They were open pretty late so it was convenient for me to grab a bite with my adjustment to the time change still off. The burger was ok, it came with some gravy to dip my fries and burger in but I didn't use it. There are a lot of better places to eat in Edinburgh but I just went here out of convenience. They host a lot of daily events so I imagine those are fun to socialize and meet new people passing through.

The food was worth the lack of atmosphere: good prices, special offers and always filling. However, it is a place that is best enjoyed in the evenings, as it is making a real effort to offer something different for Shawlands. Monday night has a computer game tournament, and there is live music from Thursday through to Sunday- Sunday being an open mic night, that usually serves up some local comedy. Friday and Saturday see it turn into a trendy pub, with a graduate aged crowd: busy, but the screens have Sex and the City all Friday night and the atmosphere is lively and safe. The actual fittings are swish: this has been a comedy venue in the past, and retains some of that cool atmosphere. The last time I went in, it still had canvases of comedians up on high. It's also possible to escape the crowds by going to their balcony. At the least, it gives a clear view of the action downstairs. The bands are local and mostly do covers. Saturday is blues night, there is a DJ on the Tuesday evening, with cocktails on special.
