I have been a patient of Monarch Eye Care for many years due to the outstanding care I receive. Devon at the front desk is always polite and helpful. Riley is extremely patient when doing my pretest. Devon is able to make sure my eyewear fits perfectly. Dr. Monarch continues to give the best eye exams resulting in keeping my eyes healthy and my vision in optimal. I absolutely love my new glasses and sunglasses and found my new contact lenses to be extremely comfortable. My husband and I went to Monarch Eyesore for eye exams on 3/23/26 which were covered by our Davis vision insurance we were offered either dilation or a retina scan for $39 which we both took. I am trying to get results and they want us to come in for a medical visit and will bill our medical insurance to get results of retina scan. I asked them to email or I Will pick up results tell me when it's ready. They can do a screenshot of the image they took as well as a summary of results. I get a call today saying it will be $25 plus $5 each eye for them to email results or if I pick up will still be $35 per person to pull the files. Is this legal? We have had retina scans previously by other eyecare drs in Summerville and have gotten results the same day wihile we were there at no extra cost. I called state LLR licensing, there is no record for Monarch eyecare or Diane monarch?? Other than them billing our medical insurance for result of this exam which just on principal I don't see necessary (just a way to get another payment for what was already paid) the only other way to get result is for us to pay them to retrieve the records. I have spoken to Davis vision and the other eye dr who's filled the prescription for the glasses and this is not the way it's done. Two insurances getting billed for our exams. I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau to look into this. I would avoid this office in the future. read more

I initially didn't leave a review even though this place was terrible. It seemed great and so I made an appointment. I waited a while but was patient and was eventually seen. Quick and I told them what contacts I wear and they ordered it, and I was quoted a good price and then I left. Then it was downhill. I got a call I got misquoted but they already charged me. It was a huge back and forth and the optometrist assistant was kind and sympathetic but said they wouldn't honor their misquote. Over the course of days I kept asking them to cancel or refund me (I ended getting my contacts at Costco) and she said they couldn't even refund me! Like what in the world?!? So I had to contact my bank tell them what happened how they misquoted and CHARGED me and then REFUSED to give me a refund. SOOOOOO my bank got my money back for me thankfully! Now I'm getting texts to confirm my appointment and I DONT have an appointment with them. So as requested by their automated system, I called to cancel and it leaves me on hold. read more

Today, 3 of my family members had eye exams (1:30). Due to the holiday traffic we were 15 minutes late. (I called). When I arrived there were no customers in the office and had 2 staff members at the front desk. I was told to fill out 3 new forms, 1 for each member (even though they are already in the system). If you choose not to get dilation, the cost is $39. I decided to get dilation for my 2 children. One of the staff members took the girls in the back to have their eyes dilated. (Time is 2:07). I'm not sure why it took so long from the time we got there since no one else was in the office. The staff did not tell us that the girls would have to wait 30 minutes before being seen. If they had told me this, I would have paid for the picture over dialation for my daughter. My husband chose the picture over dialation and was required to pay the $39 prior to being seen. I did not like that it was required to pay up front before being seen. This made me feel like they felt we wouldn't pay. I have NEVER been asked to pay for services for an eye exam prior, I always pay at the end when I am also paying for my glasses. My husband was called back even though I explained that one of my daughters needed to be seen 1st since she had another appt. When the Dr came out of my husbands exam, my daughter was waiting for her (2:43). The Dr. Went into another room to start an exam on another patient who came in after us, and their appt was scheduled after ours as well. At this time, I told them that we needed to leave and that my daughter would NOT be getting an eye exam. I would NOT recommend this business to any of my friends or family. My daughter told me after we left that the front office lady who put the drops in her eyes smelled like cigarettes. read more

Monarch Eye Care is the worst company I've ever done business with for my vision care. First of all, they charged me double for my contacts what I paid 2 years ago at the same location. Secondly, I spend 8 months working out a problem with my bill. Their high turnover I'm sure was a part of this. Thirdly, they told me at the time of my appointment that I would need to submit a claim to get reimbursed for my exam & lenses (no problem. I've done that at many vision locations). BUT...after submitting my claim to my insurance, I found out that Monarch did indeed file my claim AND kept my $150 that was supposed to be reimbursed to me. I made an appointment on line for medical, I had extreme redness and pain in the right eye. When I arrived I was told it have to be changed to an office visit and would cost me $145.00. This is not charged to my insurance. I hade to be evaluated to determine if it was medical then they would charge my insurance for further visits. This is only a way of getting more money out of you. I went to another doctor and was only charged my copay. This office and doctor should not be trusted. Some doctors use the excuse they need to evaluate you to determine if it's medical or vision. So you have to pay for the evaluation. Not true. read more

I was pressured into get getting progressive lens and They were an extra $95.00 and I was hesitant but the lady ... ida? Said I had 30 days to return them if they didn't work but that I would love them. I tried them a day at work and they were horrible everything was blurry I had to tilt my head way up to get a clear spot and they gave me a headache. I returned them the next day when I asked about returning my $95 and the lady said she would have to check. She ordered me new lens that are free with my insurance. When I picked them up she had me talk to the manager Scott and he refused to give me back my money. He was rude and belittling and basically said too bad so sad. My husband also got reading glasses and they gave him the wrong prescription the first time and the second time They were just as bad. He can't see thru them. Very disappointed, Daughter went in for a eye check-up. Got fitted for contacts got a new script for glasses. Went home contact wrong went back , charged us 45.00 for new trial pair of contact and we asked if the script was right. They said yes. Ordered 2 new pair of eye glasses somewhere else Well the contacts were still wrong. And guess what else was wrong ? The eyeglasses script. So now we have gone to the place we bought the eyeglasses and paid for another exam. Guess what script was completely different than what they had prescribed. Eye so nice to see again. All this has taken almost a total of 3 months. So save your self the hassle. Go somewhere else. Not happy read more

I called om 6/6/2023 to make an appointment and to verify that their website info was correct. Specifically, their website said they accepted Davis Vision insurance, and that they did handle Rx's for progressive lenses, which they did not do last year. The receptionist verified that they were a Davis Vision participant, and they indeed handled Rx's for progressive lenses. I told her I was looking to get 2 new pairs of glasses, one regular and one sunglasses. She said to bring my insurance info in the next day, which was when my appointment was set for. When I arrived, we went through my insurance and again that I wanted 2 new pairs of glasses. They dilated my pupils and did the exam, after which the receptionist handed me a paper with my new Rx on it, and told me I'd have to go to another optometrist to have my glasses made because they don't deal with the Davis Vision lab. If I'd known that 1 1/2 hours ago, I wouldn't have had the exam done there. Totally unprofessional and sneaky! read more

My last pair of contacts tore and I was able to get a same-day appointment on a Saturday. I did have to wait close to 30 minutes to be seen once I checked it, but it was worth it to be able to have contacts for the weekend. The office is bright and clean, and the technician, Dr. Monarch, and sales rep were all very professional. My exam was $130 and included both contacts and glasses Rx. They do charge an additional fee for a new kind of retinal scan (I forget if it was $35 or $65 - I want to say $65), or you can do the old school dilating drops for free (but you'll have to wear those funny sunglasses for a couple hours). The sales rep listed the total cost of my visit and the cost of a 6mo and 1yr supply of contacts for me to choose from. I really appreciated the plain and upfront accounting. read more

We have used Monarch Eye Care since 2017. Dr. Monarch is professional and competent. The office is well equipped and clean. Her staff is polite and helpful. Their prices are higher than some but seem reasonable in an apples-to-apples comparison. I have been completely pleased with the contact lenses and glasses that I have purchased there. Yet two experiences in the past two years have given me the impression that money is more important to Dr. Monarch than patient satisfaction. The first disappointing situation occurred when my wife's contact lenses in a new prescription arrived weeks later than expected. After receiving the contacts, she had a problem with the prescription. Dr. Monarch would not see her as a follow up appointment because more than two weeks had passed since the contacts were delivered, after which the insurance company does not cover a return visit. So for the next year my wife used the contacts anyway, even though she could not see well with them, and periodically switched to using her glasses. The practice had failed to inform her of the two week window. Dr. Monarch should have offered a complimentary re-examination. Strike one. The second instance also involved poor communication by Monarch staff. Our daughter wanted to try contact lenses. She was given some trial contact lenses at Monarch in July 2019. She ordered a supply of the lenses but did not pick them up. Later she decided not to get them after finding that her work environment could contaminate contact lenses. She tried on some glasses at Monarch and picked a couple of styles from which to choose. She couldn't afford them at the time. She continued to wear her old, taped up glasses until January, when she could afford to order the new glasses. We asked Monarch Eye Care about getting a credit for the contacts toward the glasses and did not get a reply. I asked again today (2/19) about the credit. Dr. Monarch told me through one of her employees that too much time had elapsed since the lenses came in and they could not be returned. No credit. My Eye Dr. in Greenville, NC would always give credit for unused contact lenses, applied to the purchase of new lenses or glasses. Monarch did not tell us that they had a different policy. They also did not call us to tell us that we needed to pick up the contacts before a certain time had expired. More failures to communicate. Strike two. In both cases the practice (Dr. Monarch) seems to have made a decision based solely on whether or not the practice will get compensated or reimbursed, instead of considering the fact that her staff did not provide complete information to her patients. I do not appreciate business owners that favor money over fairness to customers. I ran a small business. I get it. I do not think that a business should extend itself to a customer who is making an unreasonable request, or trying to cheat the business. But in light of the fact that we were not informed of any deadlines for a follow up visit, or for returning contacts, neither of our requests for consideration was unreasonable. I went to Monarch based on a colleague's recommendation. I even referred my boss to Dr. Monarch. I now regret choosing this practice for our family's eye care needs. I am not willing to wait for strike three. We are looking elsewhere in Summerville for optometry. The My Eye Dr. office in this area is too far away in Mt. Pleasant. Otherwise we would go there. read more

I can't say enough about Monarch. I called on a whim to see if I could get an appointment the next day (a SATURDAY), and was surprised that I could get in. Every single person who works at Monarch was pleasant and went out of their way to help me. Dr. Monarch is an excellent eye doctor and talked to me about some unique things about my eyes. I went into progressives, and the team there educated me about what to expect. When I picked my new glasses up, the gentleman who helped me was thorough and worked diligently to make sure that my glasses rested exactly where they were supposed to. I've been wearing my new glasses for about 24 hours so far, and I have had not one single problem. The current space is cramped but they are anxiously waiting to get into their new space in the Earth Fare shopping center. I'm sure everyone - staff and customers - will be glad when that happens. read more

If I could select zero I would. The lady that fits you was a complete ignorant a** to my 11 yo daughter. Yes her glasses are thick and she's already self conscious about them so she makes her feel worse tell her she can't and don't recommend the style she likes and she needs to go with a round frame. My daughter was turning red almost into tears I tell her lady she don't like what your giving her to put on. She then turns to my child well why don't you like them and keeps badgering her. I think she needs to take a class on how to talk to children and the public for that matter. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. My husband and I scheduled appts and ended up waiting for an hour past scheduled times for our appointments. Walking in the door was nice, staff was friendly while checking us in. From there, things went downhill. Not only did our appointment time come and go but we also had the misfortune of watching the biggest ASS of an office manager arguing with a customer about their glasses order. Something had happened to them, the customer had waited forever for the glasses to come and then they weren't fitted right. In the size that was needed, they didn't like any of the other frames available. They wanted their money back to go somewhere else and get a pair. This office manager was arguing that they had plenty of choices in their shop and told them he was not going to give them a full refund. After about 20 minutes of back and forth, the couple just gave up and took what he was giving them for a refund. After they left, he continued to hang behind the waiting chairs talking with an associate about how "they could have chosen something there, they just didn't want to" and that he "could have given them their money back but there was no way he was going to let them have a full refund because they just didn't like the frames that were there". Over and over he said this stuff for about 10 minutes. ISN'T THAT THE CUSTOMER'S PREROGATIVE TO CHOOSE WHAT THEY WILL BE HAPPY WITH??? Also while sitting there, I overheard 2 different customers getting prices for their glasses...one was over $600 and the second was over $900!!!! We did our exams and left without making any purchases. There's no way I will go back to this store. read more

The optometrist was excellent, but the store engages in deceptive practices including seeking insurance reimbursement for twice the amount I already paid for the eye exam. Then, when I sought explanation for the estimated $700 price for bifocals, the owner got defensive then charged me $60 after I cancelled the order after they refused to identify a customer who'd stolen my smartphone from the counter as the owner said he didn't want my business. (I ordered bifocals online with Zenni for $80, and they are perfect!) Meanwhile, I learned that after I'd paid $74 for the eye checkup (was supposed to pay only supposed to pay $29), Monarch filed a $150 claim against my health insurance for the eye exam. I'm disputing that, plus the glasses receipt they gave me was for another customer (a social security employee). So much for patient privacy. read more

Have been very busy with work and needed to order new contacts online, as I had no way to make it into the office. Sent them an email requesting my prescription be emailed to me and was informed I would need to come in or they would need to fax it. In this day in age, it should be able to be emailed. Also, it was not given to me after my initial visit or offered. Very poor service. Will not be returning, have made an appointment with a different optometrist that has joined the 21st century! read more

Very impressed. The normal hours are till 1:00 PM on Saturday. My wife and I did not leave until 2:00PM. Very professional, courtious and reasonable as far as the obvious expensive eyeware goes. We shall be back and recommend this place to anyone. read more

Save your money and go somewhere else. As other posters have said, they are VERY OVER PRICED!!! Of course you don't find that out until after your exam and tests are completed and you are picking out frames or ordering contacts. Some of the staff are a bit snooty as well like other people have mentioned. Also the one MAIN problem I was concerned about with my eyes was never addressed and of course i only remembered once I left the office. My prescription was not right when i picked up my new glasses although some of the office staff were adamant they were fine. After finally checked by the man who sells the frames or is in charge of the orders (maybe the owner?) finally concurred they were indeed not the correct prescription. They were able to correct the problem in two days but i still don't feel they are quite right. I'm not going to do anything being I know i can't get my money back (I already tried to cancel the initial order when I was suckered into paying $200 for frames which with my insurance should only cost $30 but was told they couldn't (even though it was only 16 hours since they placed the order and they glasses take approx. a week and half to make). This will be my first and last experience with this place. I hardly ever give reviews but felt inclined to let people know that this place is a bit of a scam. I had to switch eye doctors because of insurance so I chose Monarch. My initial visit was typical. I knew my prescription needed updating, so I chose to use my current frames and have my lenses updated only. I also opted for Transitions and scratch protection. Additionally, I was aware of having dry eyes. I was prescribed drops that were extremely expensive so I couldn't afford them but I was happy once I got my glasses back. The protective coating made everything look like it was rainbowish-the only way I can describe it-and the lenses never seemed to be clear-but I was told they are just like that. Several months later, I started seeing spots and flashes from my left eye so I went back. Basically, I was told it happens "with age" and my brain would get used to it after a few weeks. Then, the same thing happened with my right eye so again, I was examined and told the same thing, even after I couldn't read the small letters with my right eye. This condition is constantly bothering me and I feel like I have oil in my eyes. Also, my glasses have scuff marks that I can't clean off. I asked about getting those looked at, and Scott, the office manager told me it was my fault and they wouldn't do anything since I didn't buy insurance. This was said to me in front of other patients in the waiting area. I replied that I wasn't made aware I should have purchased insurance to cover scratch protection that apparently doesn't work, and he abruptly told me they tell all patients that. I was embarrassed and left with no answers about my vision issues and glasses that I cannot use. The worst part is, the staff has been different each time I have visited, they were unorganized, and Scott is just outright rude. I will not be returning and now have to spend more money to find another eye doctor. read more

I've never wrote a review, but my experience here compelled me to hopefully save some people some money. I'll start by saying that I agree with the other posters reviews about a professional staff and pleasant, knowledgeable doctor. The problem occurred when purchasing our contacts. My wife and I were approached by the owner after our exam to order contacts. He sold us on a pair that would cost us $500 for a years supply. Seemed high to me, but not knowing much about contact pricing I thought it was an honest price. We bought the contacts and left only to return later to cancel the sale because we just didn't feel comfortable. When I asked to cancel my order I was told that all contacts cost the same and I wouldn't find a better deal. After an uncomfortable conversation about cancelling and getting my money back, they finally let me cancel. From a friends recommendation, we went to Target Optical to check the price. We were stunned to find out that the same contacts for a year would cost us just $130. Needless to say, we felt ripped off. I had to go back in to Monarch to get my money back. It took everything I had not to stop him from giving an older gentleman the same cruddy deal he gave me a few hours ago as I sat in the lobby waiting for the owner. When I finally got to speak to him he let me know that he couldn't refund all of my money because part of the exam that was covered at first wasn't covered any more. It was covered for me, but not my wife. I laughed in my head how much this guy wants to get one over on people and left refunded $30 short. Oh well. Take it or leave it. Dr. Monarch is a very good doctor which is why it is a disappointment that her office staff is so unprofessional. My mother, who has Medicare, was being treated for an eye infection. Dr. Monarch's treatment was very effective. Scheduling followup visits was the problem. Twice I arrived with my 97 year old mother only to find that they didn't have us on the schedule for either that time or that day. Once they tried to collect payment for treatment that had been covered by her supplementary insurance. The last straw was today when she had an appointment that had been scheduled at her previous visit a few months ago. Fortunately I called in advance to confirm and found out that once again they didn't have her on their schedule. Despite the fact that I have an appointment card saying that she had an appointment. I can only assume that they don't like to take patients with Medicare. They have certainly succeeded in their efforts to get rid of us as we will never return - not only my mother, but my husband and myself as well. read more

Purchased glasses in September and spent $475 (for "Timex" non-designer glasses) in addition to the $150 my insurance paid. Salesperson did not properly fit me for them, as the arms were far too short and dug into the bone behind my ear. Returned to the store 4 times over a few weeks time to get the arm adjusted (one time they actually broke the arm and had to order a new pair. Went back this past, the 5th time, and was told the reason they hurt is because the arm was too short, something THEY should have fit me for (It was a 130, while I needed at least a 140). The office refused to let me exchange the frames for a different pair saying I owned them too long to exchange, despite complaining immediately. I couldn't even wear them because it hurt too badly. I also complained that the script was too weak. I had a second opinion (paid out of pocket) by an ophthalmologist (not an optometrist) and that doctor confirmed Monarch had the wrong script. Told this to Dr. Monarch's husband and he said he didn't have the best luck with the MD who did my second opinion. Had a THIRD opinion today (bc my benefits period started over) AGAIN confirming that the script was wrong. Spent $400 at Target for VERSACE DESIGNER frames today with bifocals. Terrible customer service (one "fitter" doesn't even speak when spoken to), inaccurate reading, and improper fitting procedures. I'd NEVER refer anyone there again. read more
