My wedding was June 3rd of this year. More stressful than finding the venue, the dress, the…read morecaterer, you name it...was finding a photographer. I had no idea just how expensive it is to get photos taken for a wedding, and we only seemed to be finding studios that charged outrageous minimums for "packages" we weren't interested in and individual photographers whose portfolios were lackluster, to say the least. Budget aside, my now-husband is a semi-professional photographer; imagine how important it was, given this fact, for us to find a photographer we trusted enough to handle our wedding. My husband wouldn't have minded if I walked down the aisle in a burlap sack as long as a talented individual was there to take gorgeous pictures of me in aforementioned burlap sack. Cue our panic as the options dwindled. Then, a friend recommended Jay Murdock, who did her wedding photography. Hallelujah. We looked at his portfolio and really loved what we saw. It was clear that he takes his clients' preferences into account. The technical quality was every bit as good as that of most of the big "package" studios floating around town. When photog-husband gave his approval, I knew we were good to go. At the time of our wedding, Jay was charging a $75/hour flat rate for his services. Thus, to enlist him for one hour prior to our ceremony, to the end of the four-hour reception, was $375. That price would strike me as "too good to be true" if it weren't...true. During my search, I couldn't find any other SKILLED photographers for less than $800. Jay doesn't bother with making prints or whittling proofs down to the "top shots," as seems to happen with many places. Instead, he provides DVDs with the digital files of every single picture he took during your wedding. Every picture. From there, you can do whatever you want with them. My husband chose to do the editing on our pictures, since he's a photographer and he enjoys that sort of stuff, but if you're not inclined to editing, Jay will do that for you, too. We ended up with 1000+ pictures from our big day, from posed shots to hysterical/touching/goofy candid shots, and now we get to choose exactly which pictures we want to print and do that on our OWN terms instead of having a studio decide for us. This also makes it incredibly easy to share the digital files with friends and family, whether in email or on Facebook and the like. He also sent us home with a "sample CD" day-of, so that we could enjoy a portion of the pictures during our honeymoon; the DVDs with ALL of the shots arrived at our house within a week. Okay, all that jazz aside, Jay was a pleasure to work with. He responded to all of my (really stupid) emails within a day, normally same-day. He arrived at the venue early day-of, which was the first time I met him since the wedding was planned long-distance. I instantly felt in good hands. I was paranoid, going into my wedding, that we'd end up with one of those photographers who gets in the way of everything and makes his presence obnoxiously known: that was NOT a problem with Jay. Utter professionalism. It was clear to me that he'd probably be great at just about any sort of wedding. We're low-key but somewhat eccentric types--to put it nicely?--and he handled our ridiculousness beautifully. But he also beautifully handled the more traditional guests at the wedding, ensuring the posed, proper pictures were tended to amidst everything else. Really...I have no complaints. None, whatsoever. I couldn't be more delighted with how wonderful (and plentiful!) our wedding pictures are. Jay really cares about what he does, and he's great at it. He's a very friendly person, and his professionalism was top-notch from start to finish.
