Dirty unkempt kitchen area. Boxes piled up.to ceiling. Safety hazard. Owners redate expired prepared foods to extent shelf life.

This is a mixed review. I have been a customer of Deering's…read moremarket since a teenager, so well over 20 years I have frequented this establishment. I'm not sure if times have changed the attitude of recent staff, with covid essentially putting most people on edge and stressed out, but as of yesterday was the first time I was treated with less than impressive service. I've always been greeted with warm and friendly smiles, when a person wasn't required to wear a mask, obviously, and always a welcoming hello from the gentlemen that run the store. I noticed there was now a female employee. I walked in with my son, we both had masks on, my son even had gloves on, because that's what makes him feel safe. The place was a bit busy, so we didn't receive a greeting upon entering. No biggie. My son and I picked out some gum, and weaved through the aisles. We were on our way to a playground, on foot, so I had a rolled up kite visibly sticking out of my purse. I'm not sure if this put the female employee on edge, but everywhere we went, she was only a few feet away, staring at us. We picked out some drinks, and immediately after she walked over to where we got our drinks and opened the door, like she was doing inventory. Then we waited in line to check out. She refused to go to an open register and check us out, as we waited behind someone else that was paying. The reason I come to this conclusion is because while we were waiting in line, some young man walked through the door, went to the same area we picked out our drinks, then stood in line behind us. She immediately ushered that guy over to check him out, even though we were in line before him. She glared at me specifically the entire time I was in the store. Pretty unbelievable and a bit confusing, as I felt like I was being profiled and somehow discriminated against. Maybe it was just in my head, but sometimes intuition proves otherwise. I still love and respect the establishment, but that woman needs a serious attitude adjustment. I'm not sure if it was simply because I was a young female, or what the deal was, the kite I had in my purse, maybe unsettled her...doesn't matter. I did nothing wrong. I've never been stalked throughout the store like that before. I'll still be happy to give my service to the store, it was just rude behavior on her part that I never have experienced before there.

I have missed Indian food!…read more We moved here in June from Durham,NC. Durham has a very diverse ethnic food scene. Indian food is very prevalent there because of the large Indian community. I've tried all manners of Indian food and Taste of India is excellent! I love spicy flavor but NOT HEAT! (To me black pepper is too hot!) I first heard about Taste of India from our neighbors and was disappointed to hear it was in a food court at the mall. Then I read the review in the paper and learned why they opened in the mall. Not because the Taste of India is fast food but because the family wanted to expose more people to Indian flavors. That changed my mind! The Butter Chicken at Taste of India was perfect for me, almost no heat, just wonderful, rich, warm spices. Chicken was cooked to perfection. The naan was soft and light, great for scooping up the generous helping of sauce. The basmati rice was perfectly cooked. The lentils had a little heat but not too much. All of my portions were HUGE! Enough for an additional meal. I tried the Mango Lassi drink. It was like drinking a fresh mango. Indian food is known for its vegetarian selections and Taste of India is no exception. I'm looking forward to trying them next time. The service was excellent, polite and informative. They were very patient with me as I tried to decide which dish to try. I highly recommend Taste of India.

The selection isn't huge as they have a smaller footprint but we found pretty much everything we needed in this small town market. Candy, Sprite, and s'mores fixin's for my little cousin, blueberries and oatmeal for my grandma, beer for my husband and uncle, frozen soft pretzels and mustard for my aunt, brats making sausage and peppers for the group for my mom, and Moomers ice cream and cans of Bubly for me. Prices were decent, especially for a smaller market, and they had a surprising amount of locally made goods. Produce selection was a little small (we had to go into Sutton's Bay to get oranges, for example) but all pantry items we needed were easy to find. The shop, because it's small, makes checking out a little challenging when there are more than a few folks in there. At one point my mom and I were looking at the ice cream selection and a line of about 4 people filed behind us. We didn't realize the coolers were adjacent to the second cash register! Navigating out was a challenge but everyone was very kind about it. Admittedly, though I read the amazing reviews for their Indian eats, we did not get any. But I'm definitely game to try it out next time.

I did order samosa, they were actually pretty good but don't get too excited. The pastry was really good and the filling was nice but again no flavor. Even the cilantro sauce was bland. I just don't get it. When I eat Indian food I expect flavor, I want flavor and I love flavor. I won't be back. Best of luck and stop catering to thinking people won't come because you have too much flavor. Goodness knows people need some kick ass flavor in central Michigan. And right now you don't have any. A hot dog would have been a better choice today and I actually don't like hot dogs.
