The place is always clean, the bathrooms stinks like old water but there's three individual bathrooms. The front desk receptionist are snobby and dismissive in which it's their job to greet incoming clients. The waits usually long but some are beginning barbers. We usually go to the renowned barber Dame who gets my son right every single time. Slow as heck but efficient. The owner is pretty cool he doesn't complain about much and has nice customer service. I love when he's at the front desk. After so many times of going one of the receptionist started to warm up. I love the energy amongst the students. They're always so vibrant and upbeat. They make everyone feel welcomed. I love the engagement here. Going to be a little sad when Dame leaves because this place feels like home away from home. We shop the Mandela market whenever we come here. There's plenty of parking in the back. What's so ironic yet I love is we don't hear the Bart running at all. The cancellation of the sounds is superb. All we hear is the amazing playlist Cisco has going on. I love this place! read more

This is a barber college. Do not expect $100+ salon service but could receive a $100+ haircut. I have been going to Moler Barber Colleges for 30 years and can say that they're overall consistent. I finally made it into Moler's Barber College after the many years I've lived in the East Bay. My hair is difficult to cut, with different growing patterns and barbers have difficulties getting my line straight. To say the least, it takes a skilled barber to handle my head of hair. I had my doubts, but I was welcomed into the building after finding a free parking spot. I paid my dues and a barber was recommended to me. I got more than I expected for my $7 bucks plus tip. I am very satisfied with the barber that was recommended to me. He took his time to get my cut just right, like a true professional. You can't beat Moler's, I got a quality haircut for cheap and I am helping students clock in their practice hours. read more

I like knowing that I'm helping students and saving on my hair cut. Sometimes a big chaotic,but I have gotten good haircuts here. My last Mohawk was amazing. I appreciated how the teaching staff and other students pitched in advice to help my barber. Mine was only her second Mohawk. Be patient if things take longer. read more

I'd only go here if I was getting my head shaved, I think that's all they wanna do anyway... the kid literally spent probably 90 minutes buzzing and re-buzzing my sides. LOL I was like please can I just go? This is so awkward... then out of nowhere he's buzzing back my hairline, like all over (never had this done, also did not ask for it) I'm like WTF?? wow. Just like every other barber college around, quality varies from person to person, but despite everyone here having their own technique and area of specialty, they all do a great job with lining up hairlines and properly blending fades. I would entrust my hair to a vast number of barbers in this shop, but Luis is always my go to barber. he is passionate about his work and always pays excellent attention to the detail in his cut, and is confident in making suggestions to patrons as to what type of hairstyle would best suit their needs. read more

I have had some really great haircuts here in the past and have left good reviews in the past however this visit was a disaster. A student by the name of Isaac cut my hair who you should avoid if you were to visit. 1. First off, he really did not want to cut my hair and tried to pass me off to someone else because I wasn't getting my head shaved 2. He kept trying to convince me to get my head shaved even though I told him exactly what I wanted. (a bald fade to a number 3 on the sides and trim the top with scissors so it wouldn't be in my eyes) 3. Worst part is his clippers had a jagged piece of metal in it that kept cutting my skin. I told him that they were cutting me and it was hurting and he just stopped for a second and proceeded to use them again and cut me again. I told him again and he said he would go softer but I kept trying to tell him that it was a sharp piece of metal. 4. After telling him several times what I wanted he still did not do it and gave me a really bad haircut. However I am a nice guy and said it was fine and gave him a tip to not discourage him but he does need a lot of improvement and needs better communication skills because I could not understand a word he was saying. I know he is just a student but it really needs to be better. Hopefully Isaac can learn something from my terrible and painful experience and not let it happen to anyone else. read more

Sadly I have to downgrade my original rating. While many of the barbers try hard there are too many that are unprofessional & they don't appear to be receiving training on how to properly conduct themselves in a place of business. The last few times I went close to my lunch break and the barbers that cut my hair were also thinking about lunch. Many of the guys go out to lunch together & unfortunately my barbers were rushing to get me out of the chair so they could join their buddies for lunch. This was the case during my last visit. I had requested to be cut bald with a razor for an extra close cut. The barber kept talking with the other guys about how hungry he was & what he was going to order and he was clearly rushing. Not being careful, this clown actually nicked the top of my head with the blade and he drew blood! He didn't even apologize. Instead he tried to play it off while putting antiseptic on the cut. Needless to say, I haven't been back since & I don't think that I will. There are some really good young barbers there who care about your business but unfortunately there are some who are immature. Try to find a good one but know that you might get a stuck with a lousy barber. read more

Moler's barbers is full of talented guys and full of many who are trying to avoid their third strike cutting hair. I just stopped by here this morning for a quick haircut. I don't get anything special done, just a 1 buzz cut with my sideburns trimmed up and a square crop in the back, and the gentleman who cut my hair did a fine job. I would suggest being as specific as possible to get exactly what you want. Again, as others have said, for $7 - it's a great, quick and friendly haircut in North Oakland. Please be sure to tip whomever cuts your hair - these guys definitely deserve some cash as they're learning the ropes. There is on site parking, which I found out after parking in front of someone's house on 38th -- just turn in past the parking meters and park in one of the designated spaces -- bring cash, as I didn't see anything for accepting credit cards. read more

$7 is a mighty fine price for any old hair cut, but what I got at Moler was a speedy and terrific haircut. I was instantly a point of humor in the shop as no one seemed to have any idea how to cut hair like mine (especially having let it grow wild for well over six months). One barber was going to just use clippers to shave it short, but I was saved by a very skilled barber who knew just what he was doing with a pair of scissors. If you are a Caucasian female, or a male with luxurious girlie hair like myself, then the man you must see is Sarkis at booth 7. He knew just what to do with my silky mop. Make sure you don't mind some attention either because every single person will be staring at you like an alien in a cage, but they are all simply interested in learning how to cut your hair. The people there are very friendly; they are also quick, cheap, and talented. It can't hurt to give them a try. And if they do a good job, make sure to tip; the cut I got was worth far more than $7 anywhere else. read more

To parrot other reviewers, you get what you pay for. My barber was clearly a beginner. Maybe, perhaps, even I was his very first real hair cut! That is a possibility. I'm almost certainly his first white person's hair. He was nervous and was worried he was messing up. In the end, he sort of did, but he was good and asked for help from the teachers on hand. They directed him and he improved even from the first cuts to the last, in the 30 minutes there was noticeable improvement of confidence and technique, which really made me think it was his first cut. My barber still has a lot to learn about communicating with the client, not swinging them around in the chair every 10 seconds for the entire time, and also using the mirror view from afar to aid in the haircut (and evenness thereof, which I must say was not perfect and I ended up trying to fix at home by myself, which turned out questionable). If you are willing to risk it for a biscuit (aka possibly get a bad hair cut), then for $7 you can't go wrong. I also felt in some way like I was doing a community service, letting someone possibly make me look ridiculous so that they could learn to avoid doing that to someone else in the future. Watching the whole process, nervous from my chair, I pondered what it must be to do anything like that for the first time. A haircut is one thing, what about a brain surgery? I went here to get a decent haircut. I had a student named Omar and he took his time cutting my hair. I just got a normal buzz cut, but Omar took his time making sure that he got everything right. He even lined me up in the front (basically cut off my widow's peak). I saw a kid come in and ask for the number 10 to be shaved into his head. It only cost him $7 plus whatever the student wanted to charge him for the number to be shaved into his head. I think I heard him only ask for a couple of dollars on top of the $7. It is definitely worth stopping by if you are looking for a good haircut for $7. The only real downside to coming here is parking. It is a small parking lot that is shared with a Chinese restaurant and I think a lot of the spaces are taken by the students at Moler Barber College. read more

Not bad. My hair was cut by an earnest man, slightly unsure of himself, but "hey, that's why [he] is in school... to learn!" (his words). Partway through my cut was some drama involving three punk kids (one of them may be a student, but I'm not sure) asking me for change. My barber got quite upset at this disrespect and about 4/5's of the way through my cut he stormed outside to confront these punks. I can't complain, because before he did, he asked who I took to be the instructor to work on my hair a bit. Besides, local flavor like this is why one goes to Oakland barber college to get a haircut, right? The cut was very clean, and my barber was very careful and thorough. I went to Moler Barber College today. A nice African American girl did my hair. She cut some of it down but had the sides and the back faded. She was very nice, however she was a little slow at doing my hair because she said she was partying until 2:00 A.M. She cut little bits of the side of my hair. She also used clippers and the comb. When she was done, she used oil so my face would not be bumpy. When the radio was playing, she was humming along to the song which was nice. However it can be a little loud sometimes. read more

I am a graduated student and must say The worse experience in a school i have ever had straight joke of a school nothing but fake promises don't waste your time or money real talk! wish I would never wasted my money or time here didn't teach me not a dam thing learned everything by myself and the staff hahaha quit playing no one really cares here as long they got they money they can careless. On Saturday, May 2nd, I went in to have my haircut. What I observed was a disrespect to the Moler name. The swearing by patrons and the sagging pants of a young female not a male was unacceptable. I've been been using Moler Barber College LITERALLY since I was a kid, when they were located in Downtown Oakland - this was my third professional haircut (first Mama and the scissors, then my grandpa's buddy's shop near his corner, then the expensive barber shop a few blocks from home, and finally the student cuts at Moler). I have experienced hundreds of haircuts from them, and 80% are pretty good (thus the four stars), with 20% needing to be cleaned up either by the instructor or by my wife when I get home. Yes, I don't have the hair I used to have, but I still want a tight cut. I always 1) Tell the barber EXACTLY what I want (00 setting on the clipper, even all around including the beard, rounded lines) and 2) I bring a picture on my phone of my favorite cut and say "It should look like this'" I will wait a few sessions and see if I can add a half star. read more

It all depends who you get to cut your hair. Overall this place is cheap and you get what you pay for. The barbers don't have the best moral since they are all cutting for free. Some are very experienced and some are not very strong barbers. Be careful who you choose. Their hours are good too, im pretty sure they are open on Sundays which is rare. Cuts are usually $7, lines ups are $3. I saw they had a Groupon for the SUPER duper low priced cuts. Might be a good investment read more

I've been there 5 or 6 times over the past year (mainly because my hair is not hard to cut, and it still looks better than if I do it myself, for a low price), and I can't complain. Overall, I got a good haircut, except for once where my line got really screwed up, and the barber shaved it so far and hard that I ended up bleeding. But all other times, it was great, I never waited too long, barbers are pretty nice with clients.
