Lakeside Pottery Studio - Broken large plaster statue with bronze effect and wooden base before and after repair

After taking a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa we were thrilled with our purchase of an…read moreincredibly beautiful (and very heavy) Shona stone sculpture of an elephant with her calf. Unfortunately, upon returning to the US we opened our find to discover it had been broken in many places; two legs broken off, an ear snapped off, much of the stone had crumbled, etc, etc, and we thought it was ruined. This was despite careful wrapping and packing by us but, undoubtedly, careless treatment by the airlines. After several Google searches we kept coming back to Lakeside Pottery, not only because they were the most responsive but because they seemed lovely people, totally genuine, and enthusiastic and caring of our 'predicament', attributes sorely lacking from every NYC studio who were often abrasive, and didn't seem interested. I took us a few months to get our ducks in a row but we eventually snapped pics of our statue, it was given an estimate for repair and a timetable of the repair schedule. We shipped off our beloved statue in a double box, pampered though it were priceless. We opted for the total restoration, since it really wasn't much more than the next level down. Mort asked us several times why we would consider spending several times its initial cost to repair the piece, so we knew he genuinely cared and wasn't in this for the money. It was our love for the piece that convinced him we were serious about our desire to have it restored as fully as possible. Long story short, when the elephant statue was finished (way ahead of schedule) we were sent photos of its repair and we couldn't believe what we were seeing. The, when we received the statue in the 'mail', my wife literally cried tears of happiness when she saw the statue, which was repaired so perfectly, so flawlessly, and obviously with such love and care, we still to this day look upon the statue and are baffled by how they did it. My advice: these guys are geniuses at what they do. Masters of their craft, totally unsurpassed in their field, I imagine. I could not recommend them highly enough. They made us so happy, and one day we hope to drive to their studio to thank them in person. Thank you a million times for restoring our statue and giving it a whole new life!

I live in the UK so will see what I can do regarding a refund.

Big Canvas Studio finally sent me the work I paid for! Let me share with you how this happened…read more Wouldn't you know that I heard from "Roma" not 30 minutes after my review was posted, claiming that the company was not out to scam people, but instead to serve them. I was immediately asked to remove my Yelp review and close my PayPal dispute. She apologized for the delay and lack of communication - apparently she had been out of the office on Monday. (Let's not forget that she managed to email my friend regarding a price quote on Monday when she was out of the office.) In any case, she promised me that the work would be finished by the end of the business day on Tuesday and would be sent to me first thing Wednesday morning. I then received a phone call from the owner claiming the same, and my PayPal dispute was updated to reflect that as well. Side note: if "Roma" was out of the office on Monday, I fail to see why the work wasn't finished and sent immediately upon her return. Wednesday morning comes! And Wednesday morning goes. By 11:00 a.m. when I hadn't received anything, I sent "Roma" an email asking for an update. She responded with her usual promptness assuring me that the work was almost finished (seriously?) and that she would be uploading the final images to DropBox within a few minutes. Two hours later, I still hadn't received anything. I decided to send an email out of frustration, asking her whether they planned to send me anything at all. I also informed "Roma" that if I didn't receive my images within the next two hours, I would consider my order a cancellation and would expect a full refund. I also made it very clear that I would be reporting the business to the FTC for fraud. In another amazing coincidence, it only took about five minutes to receive a DropBox link. The work, however, was nowhere near complete. I refreshed the link I was sent multiple times and watched as images were very slowly uploaded. It was now obvious that the work was being completed throughout the day. The full album was not uploaded until after I was already asleep Wednesday night. "Roma" apologized again, adding that the company would discount my next order, stating that it was the least they could do. I consider this to be a pretty bold statement, as it's pretty ludicrous they think I would ever do repeat business with them. Upon completion, I received another email requesting that I remove my Yelp review. I assured "Roma" that I would update my review as soon as I received an invoice. As of now, I have about seven emails and a phone call from the owner, all asking me to remove my initial review. I did a lot of hemming and hawing about my rating for this updated review. Part of me wanted to amend the star rating to a 2 because, after all, I didn't get COMPLETELY screwed. But the point is, I fully believe that had I not threatened to report this company to the government for fraud, they would have taken my money and ran. There are plenty of other services out there that offer the same services for comparable prices. I beg you not to make my mistake; DO NOT PAY A COMPANY LIKE THIS UP FRONT. Search out one of the many reputable companies that offer quotes, complete the work, and then send your invoice for payment!

They will wine and dine you at the beginning to get you to sign on but then you get tossed to the back of the queue while they troll for new business. Here are some of the issues I experienced: 1. Awful communication. We requested they notify us the day before they would show up so that we could shower in peace without running into a stranger and to also put our dog (who loves to escape) behind a gate. Received notification maybe twice 2. Promised an electrical survey of appliances for the water mitigation part but was never completed 3. Failed to paint an entire room and the baseboards in another that the work order called for until I pointed it out 4. I had to constantly call them for updates and time estimates since they would not provide them (how hard is it to send a text message????) 5. Waited until the END to fix flooded ductwork which means my thermostat was running double-time to heat the house during this period 6. Delayed working on the project because they were waiting for payment for the water mitigation (this was their responsibility to submit the claim to the insurance company but they screwed it up and I had to fix it for them) 7. Did NOT offer a final walkthrough though it was specified on their closing paperwork. There are still white paint stains on my green door and small wall damages from their equipment on the inside
