Cold dismal experience: Found two hairs in my food and the meat was severely undercooked. Wait staff was rude and slow. My husband and I had to motion each time we needed something. We are both larger men and the rude treatment felt purposeful to be quite honest. The worst part though was we left without tipping and the manager (Karen?) followed us outside and point . blank asked we we did not leave anything. My husband is not confrontational and started looking in his purse but I held his hand and told her all of our issues. She looked annoyed/disgusted the entire time and made excuses. She never apologized once. After that she gave a curt nod and told us to have a good evening before slamming the entrance door. We stood on the side walk stunned, my husband almost in tears. Needless to say we wont be returning. read more

I need to go back and try something other than the pork tenderloin. Just didn't like the cut, and doneness of this pork. But we loved the oysters/ fire roasted and seasoned to perfection. My husband thought the scallops were great. And so glad we didn't skip dessert. The apple struddle pie was wonderful. If you get it the adding of that special scoop of vanilla ice cream is worth the extra calories. The service the night we tried the Molasses Grill was off( dirty dishes left too long and had to ask for a knife) , but found out they had a last minute sick call by one of the wait staff, so this is not the usual case. Hope to try again soon, when we get down this way. read more

This restaurant is my hands down favorite in Southside Virginia. I love cocktails and I consider this a cocktail candy store. Even if they served less than stellar food the bar would be worth the trip. However, the food offerings match the perfect creativity and execution of the drinks. I love this place and consider my visits a highlight of my life. Always try the bar seating as Rebecca is an excellent mixologist and server. read more

Went to South Boston for a business trip, and ate here for dinner. We had the calamari, the molasses pork loin, filet mignon, ribeye, and salmon. For dessert we had the house made ice-cream trio which came in three flavors - caramel, JD chocolate, and ginger. The food were very good, the calamari was probably one of the best I have ever had, maybe second to what I had in Italy, but best yet in the States. Pork loin was super tender, served over sweet potato and black peas. Flavors were well balanced. I didn't get to taste the other entree, but everyone were very impress with their food. And the ice-cream trio was delicious, even tho I was really full after appetizer and entree, but I was very glad I had that. If only I live closer to South Boston, or have other reasons to visit this small town, otherwise, I would be a very frequent diner of this little restaurant. Oh and I have to mention, the prices were very decent, all the entrees were well under $30, some were under $20 and the portion was pretty big. For the same quality of food in DC, I would imagine I would have to pay close to $35 for the entree, and might not even fill you up. Very impressive, definitely a fan, and will definitely come back if I ever return to South Boston. read more

Found the place on way from Lynchburg to Raleigh. Had a great time visiting bartender Rebecca. Enjoyed every recommended drink and every minute visiting with her. Stop by when you're in the area. read more

The Molasses Grill is a very sophisticated place in every way. It could easily fit into the scene in Paris or New York. The chef is unique in that his sauces and presentation is top flight. When he is at his best, the food can be a real experience. Unfortunately the economy and a local audience who is not ready to pay for really high quality preparation, seems to have caused the chef to lower the quality (and costs) of his meats and fish. I am sure that the demanding chef detests having to do this but the taste is not what it was. He belongs in a big city where the clientel might appreciate his talents. In Europe he would have been a three star but now has dropped to one star. This certainly is wonderful for a town where gourmet was Applebees. It is not the restaurant's fault, it is the economy of the times. read more

We are not from this area but I travel through Halifax on my regular VA to NC commute to work. The sign had caught my eye and, after checking the website, I made a reservation for 5:15 pm June 5, 2015. Our lovely hostess, Berkley, greeted us and showed us a table where we could see outside. She was very friendly and a great first line of introduction to the restaurant. Our server, Dylan, was quick to introduce himself and get our drink orders and set out some bread. It took us a few minutes to go over the menu and make a decision from the amazing selection. We started off with NC catfish fingers as an appetizer. They were delicious and the sriracha cocktail sauce paired well with them. My wife ordered the crab cakes and I ordered the skate. The crab cakes were excellent with a sweet taste, like you would expect from good crab cakes. I had never had skate but it was superb, flaky and not fishy tasting at all. We followed this with a piece of coconut rum cake that was very generous and vanilla bean creme brûlée with a couple of scoops of buttermilk vanilla ice cream. Chef Steven Schopen came by checking with his dinner guests personally, a gesture I always appreciate. Dylan never missed a beat removing items, bringing items, and keeping drinks full. Berkley wished us a good evening and we left as very satisfied customers. It was an hour commute each way for us and we will definitely return. I highly recommend The Molasses Grill to anyone traveling through the Halifax/South Boston area. They are only open from Thursday-Sunday but it is a visit well worth the planning. A gem of a restaurant right in the heart of quiet downtown Halifax. I came with a group of 15 or so, and the staff did an outstanding job catering to the needs of a big group, even with a crowded house. All of our dishes were outstanding, from the appetizers to the entrees themselves. The sweet potato fries and calamari appetizers were both very good, and my entree of crab cakes was also very good. Other members of my group echoed similar accolades with their respective dishes as well. Overall, a fine night of dining. Highly recommended! read more

My husband and I live and work close so Molasses is our favorite place for after work drinks and/or a date night. The best thing about Molasses is you can wander in for a drink after work and see patrons dressed to the nines heading to the theater after, and all are welcome. The menus are always changing but keep staple items. The staff is amazing and you can tell they like working there. Its five star but no pretention. If you havent tried it, you are missing out!! read more

By far the best place to eat in town. A little pricey for some people but for this cuisine it is very reasonable. Amazing service. Amazing menu. Chef changes menu a couple times a month so its not the same ol thing every time you go. Drinks are also changing. If you live in south boston or neighboring areas and don't go to molasses grill, you are totally missing out. read more

Last night was the first time going to Molasses Grill and I wasn't disappointed! I moved to Mecklenburg County 2 years ago and have been on the search for a fine dining restaurant that has great food, a great atmosphere and a great staff: Molasses hit a home run on all three! This restaurant would do well in any major city from NYC to Paris, France. The night started out with a waitress, Ryan, who was sweet and friendly. She was attentive the entire time and her friendly disposition made the entire group feel comfortable and relaxed. Next came the appetizers and they were fantastic. I highly recommend the calamari and lamb sausage. After our appetizers came the salads and they weren't these tiny portions, they were hearty and fresh. The presentation of our main entree's were as delicious as they were beautiful. Again, they did not skimp out on the portions. To top off the dinner we each ordered a dessert and yummy is all I can say. As with any fine restaurant it's important for the chef to make an appearance and he came over to our table to introduce himself to our party, very classy! So if you're looking for a wonderful place for fine dining I highly recommend Molasses Grill in Halifax. It was worth the drive and I finally found my new favorite restaurant! Happy eating! read more
