This is one of the best curated shops / spaces that I've been to in a long time. More than just a clothing store, everything feels like a work of art. I got so much inspiration just walking around and seeing all the pieces in their collection. There are so many brands, some that I recognized, and a lot that I haven't. So yay for discovering new small brands. People here are really cool and welcoming and allow you to have your space and look around but are there and helpful when you need it. Things are definitely on the pricier side but I do think you pay for the quality of the pieces. I really enjoyed the selection, very finely curated, but the service I received from Carl has left a bad taste in my mouth. He was very cold and when asked for a size he told me he was going to check, but never returned. I had to ask him what happened with checking he responded with "oh that's our last size". Compared to the service he was displaying to other customers he was attentive, but blatantly ignored and dismissed me. Did not purchase anything and will never give my business to a store that operates like this. My first experience coming to this store was amazing to say the least. It's very comfortable inside & directly to the point when it comes to the shopping experience. I purchased the garden clogs & was able to try them on & purchase them all within a 10 minute window. I even got the wrong size and was helped twice with great service both times. When you walk in you are greeted and feel welcomed! The merchandise is beautiful displayed beautifully and easy to look through as the racks they aren't overcrowded The prices were easy to find for the most part! I felt the sales help in the men's store to be much better than the women's, but they were both friendly and left you alone to shop. The only downside for me was the fact that nobody explained that there were other sizes in the back if you needed a different size than you found on the rack. I just learned recently that they keep the smallest size displayed in the store. Well, I've been there so many times and never knew that! I wanted to try on a pants and the sales person took me to the dressing room, giving me pants in a size 2 when I wear a large size obviously....they don't work on commission and maybe they should, they might work harder for you to get a sale! read more

The store itself is not bad, however, I won't be returning. I've shopped there a few times in the last several months there has been constant yelling from the oil changing place across the street. Loud, male, aggressive yelling, for no apparent reason. Mohawk has apparently decided to do nothing about it. It is unsettling and makes for a poor shopping experience. I talked to another customer outside and he said the same thing. We could hardly converse over the unnecessary bellowing. Limited supply and rather pricy but it's perfect if you are looking for a more indie designer (and not so good for browsing). I went for their annual alley sale (60-80% off) which made things more reasonable (Rachel Comey and Hope Stockholm shoes with each pair $80 or less and a Raquel Allegra shirt for $100). Parking is street only. Drive up a bit further and maybe you will find open curb parking that says 'no parking during school days'. read more

Fraud Alert: While visiting Los Angeles, I purchased a pair of pants which needed to be returned. Mohawk only offers store credit, and I verified at the time that I could use the credit online. Within 24 hours, I tried to use the "gift card" and it was inoperable. I wrote to Mohawk and explained the problem. They said that the gift card could not be used online, but could be converted to an online gift card. I said "OK" and that's the last I heard from them. They have my money, and the merchandise and I have nothing. I have given them a 24 hour ultimatum before involving the police. Beware! read more

Earlier this week, I was on a work trip to L.A. and while walking through the neighborhood, decided to check out Mohawk. I wasn't greeted but thought the staff just generally didn't say hello to customers. I drooled over the beautiful Isabel Marant boots, long pleated Issey Miyake skirts and dresses, and especially coveted a pair of buttery olive green Samuji leather gloves. Then I noticed the staff said hello to two white women who came in separately. Mind you, I wore a Rick Owens leather jacket that day (if you work in fashion, you know one when you see it). If you buy the wrong size online (which IMO is a necessity during Covid), you're stuck with a item you will never wear and probably spent a lot of money on. So the reason 3 stars and not 5 is that if you were to make a Portlandia-style show lampooning painfully-hip Eastside yupster grotesquerie -- you'd be insane not to just set it right here. That's how suffocatingly pretentious the vibe of this store is. And I'm not one to chafe against bougie creative-class hipster memes. I live for that shit. But Mohawk just takes it to an absurd next-next-level. It's like the "chill" 2013 Silver Lake version of the shop Julia Roberts gets snubbed at in Pretty Woman. Nice selection of jewelry, accessories, home goods and clothing as well--great place to purchase thoughtful and unique gifts for friends, family or yourself. But I'll never be spending my money here again. I spent over $600 at MGS on something I've had my eye on for a while. I wish I could have bought it elsewhere & supported another small business. I had a pleasant experience with the web manager however which is one of the reasons I'm choosing to keep my purchase, but I will not return to this store again until a more professional staff is hired. The staff/shop girls here are so boorish and uncouth. Do you have to remind them they're working retail? These are adult women, probably in their mid-thirties, or even older, whose brain cells are fighting to put the words customer and service together. I used to turn my nose up at the clothing when I was younger, cause it all seemed very "rich hip forty something" to me. Now I guess, I'm a striving hip forty something so it began to work. I am a regular at many of the "curated" (sorry, hate that word) online stores as well, and Mohawk General Store is as good a collection as exists out there for the more affordable, wearable designers. As a small store, sometimes having the right size is an issue. I found the staff helpful--at both stores. They helped me to pick out a flattering outfit but didn't push anything on me. To the negative reviews based on the (racially diverse) staff, I note people always take their class and social status anxieties out on the poor sales people. As if Dries Van Noten himself were standing in judgment of their lack of style and limited credit. It's true that shopping in a fancy store can push the buttons of self-worth--I feel that too. We've all heard stories of snooty salesperson refusing to show Oprah a scarf, but really....unless that has actually happened to you, I think you can just shop and not worry about it. read more

Matt B. and I first visited Mohawk General Store a long time ago, while walking around Sunset Junction. We browsed the beautiful home goods and accessories, and I told him we should come back if he was ever stumped on what to get me for a gift-giving occasion. The prices put almost everything in the store out of range for impulse buying. Months later we had drinks with some friends, and one girl in the group was wearing these tiny, delicate earrings that looked like thin golden staples. I asked her where she got them and she named Mohawk General Store. I kept those earrings at the back of my mind for several more months, and last weekend, when I still didn't know what I wanted for my birthday, Matt and I went to Mohawk to shop, and to see those earrings in particular. Mohawk is a nice boutique on Sunset, with an appealing front and a great selection of goods. As of recently, the men's store has split off into its own space next door. The women's boutique is lovely, with a cool, almost utilitarian aesthetic and a staff that was, at least when we visited, nothing but pleasant and friendly. I browsed the expensive, tightly curated selection of clothes and accessories, from designers like Dries van Noten, Jenni Kayne, and Comme des Garçons. I spent most of my time looking at the jewelry, and I liked almost all of it. Mohawk carries a pretty unique mix of jewelry designers, but the aesthetic is consistent - clean, unostentatious, with simple but interesting elements of design. I found the staple earrings and ended up getting a slightly different pair by the same designer (Kathleen Whitaker) when the staples were too tiny to even cover my piercings. The ones I got were little gold raised raised bars, sold individually, a bit alarmingly priced at over $100 apiece. I picked them, my husband paid for them, and the sales girl wrapped them nicely while I wandered around a few feet away. The element of surprise is worth a lot less than the perfect earrings, in my opinion, anyway. I've only been inside Mohawk twice, but while I'm not exactly a regular, I like the place quite a bit. It's a great shop to browse and splurge now and then. I'm wearing my new earrings right now, and I have no immediate plans to remove them. read more

I first found out about Mohawk General Store through Apartment Therapy. The pictures looked promising and I couldn't wait to venture into this shop and have a look see. Great selection of furniture and home accessories and I loved the jewelry and footwear they had for sale too. They also sell magazines and records. I don't think the "nice staff" was on schedule today as the two girls sitting behind the desk were perusing Urban Outfitters for a new couch and barely looked up at us when we were browsing. And at the time we were the only ones in the store, a feeble "hey" just doesn't cut it when you are clearly not busy. And I've had a couple other friends who have said most of the time they're kind of snooty. *boo* While I think the store is fantastic (love those mid-century shelves the products are displayed on) I thought most of the furnishings were just OK. But, please understand that this is coming from someone who regularly visits flea markets and antique fairs and have seen all very similar things for much much less. A metal magazine holder for $185? Is it designer? Is it flecked in gold? I have the same exact one I got at an antique mall for $25! The shop is well curated and great for those that have lots of extra cash to spend and don't want to go hunting for that perfect teak dining table. Otherwise, peruse the wares, get inspired, and visit the many flea markets instead to score better deals. read more

Amazing. I've long been a fan of Mohawk General Store, in fact, ever since it was actually ON Mohawk. And I've followed Kevin and Bo Carney as they moved into Sunset Junction, bringing with them an incredibly curated selection of clothing, music, vintage hi-fi equipment, books and magazines, candles, accessories and more at Mohawk General Store. So when I heard that Kevin had moved the men's section a few doors down, needless to say I was excited to see what he put together. I finally got in there yesterday. The new space is gorgeous, cavernous even. A perfect muted Navy Blue wall runs the length of the space, counterpoint to warm wooden floors and an abundance of white. And it has Kevin's singular taste and passions played out for all to share: art and fashion magazines like Apartamento and Habitus, great leather goods, camera straps, grooming supplies from Baxter, vinyl records that are as likely to have been in DJ Harvey's crate as they are Larry Levan's. And the clothing. Oh, man. I saw Engineered Garments, Tellason, Gitman Bros Vintage, Dries Van Noten, nonnative, MHL by Margaret Howell, Our Legacy, Industry of All Nations.... The clothing is well-presented, too. I felt like I could really get to the heart of each line's story and see it without too much background interference. It is a peaceful, contemplative way to shop. I love it. To top it all off, a pair of gleaming white Altec horn-loaded sits high above the rest of the store, washing the store in the warm sound of vinyl from a vintage Thorens turntable. As I see the changes Sunset Junction is undergoing, some of them working better than others, it is businesses like Mohawk Man, true to the creative and independent spirit of Silver Lake, that keep me in love with my area. My friend Daniel lives in Minnesota and he drove to silver lake a few months ago with his wife, 2 daughters (Silva and Seyka). His wife had started following a "Instagram Influencer" a few years ago and she kept getting exposed to the lake of silver in California. She would lie in their bed at night scrolling through her phone and anytime this influencer would post something she would flash it in front of Daniel's face to get him curious about this city. He one time called me when I was on my break and said that his wife flashed her phone in front of his face 16 times the night before and he would wake up in panic. He knew it was time to make her dreams come true and take a family trip. He knows that's I've traveled quite a bit so he asked if I had any recommendations when they were in Silver Lake, LA. I first asked when he's planning on going so I could recommend places that would only compliment the weather and quickly realized that I was going to be in New Orleans around the same time he was planning this trip so I would come and meet them for the weekend. They decided to drive because they knew their girls would not do well in high altitude on a plane. I got myself a hotel room in Santa Barbara without really thinking much about the distance to where Daniel and his family are staying. I rented myself a nice vehicle though so it made the drive nice. We went to lunch in Silver Lake and daniel's wife was so eager to take photographs of all the food and architecture. She would post it all over her instagram and tagged that influencer hoping that she would notice and come meet her at her next location. After lunch we wanted to walk around the city a little bit because we all ate way too much and had what felt like balls in our belly. We were strolling by a few mom & pop shops and noticed the store front of Mohawk's was really simplistic but artistic at the same time. We all agreed to step foot inside and you know how they say "it was love at first sight"? That's how myself and Daniel felt in here. The product assortment was nothing short of the most elite luxurious and innovative items. The leather goods smelled like they were just freshly made from my granddaddy's farm. They had everything of the sorts from clothing, accessories, home goods, beauty products, Home repair tools and type writers. I could have been in there for a minimum of 7 hours and would still feel like there was so much to explore. The staff was going above and beyond with their service and offered me water with lemon, a complimentary hat and candle if I made a purchase of $285 or more and free valet. I recommend this store to everyone but please beware that you will need to commit your whole entire day to this place because well, they deserve it and so do you. read more

Great store with very nice gifts for men if you have some money to spend. I've gotten a shirts here for my guy from Levi's Vintage, Our Legacy, etc. All clothes have been super soft and high quality. They have a wonderful selection and the dudes who work here are easy going and helpful. I love that you can get things gift wrapped next door for free too. I have been wanting to pay a visit to this place for quite sometime. Finally made it this past Saturday and right before closing time too! First thing that caught my eye was Monocle magazines (though it wasn't the latest issue on stands). Then I saw gorgeous Kelly Lamb candles and started sniffing. Then sniffed around some more and found CDG wallets in the back (looks like all the good ones are already gone). Made my way to the girls section on the left side and saw Rachel Comey tops and sandals, Hansel from Basel polka dot bag (handles were too short for my liking so didn't purchase), and Aeosop hand lotion. I sniffed around the men's section too and found Baxter of California grooming treats but noticed they didn't have as much stock as Poketo did (another shop that stocks Baxter of CA). I didn't end up buying anything but will stop by again when I'm in the area. I feel like it's a hit or miss with items in the store but hopefully next time I'll snag something super cute! read more

I moved to San Francisco last year and Mohawk General Store is one of those places I really miss. I stumbled onto it after some browsing at Sirens & Sailors next door and WOW, I was blown away. Their jewelry and handbags, in particular, are standouts for me. The two rings and Clare Vivier messenger bag I bought there are regular staples in my wardrobe. Nothing here is cheap, but the prices are very reasonable for the quality/uniqueness you get. Oh yeah, and the owners are super down-to-earth and helpful! They seemed to "get" my personal style and suggest just the right things without being pushy. read more

I've been a casual customer of this store since they first opened but the service has always been a problem. Still, I've continued to recommend the store to friends... ...until yesterday... My girlfriend purchased a pair of Rachel Comey shoes and then, a mere hour and a half later, had second thoughts. She went to return them, still in the box and bag, and was then informed that they don't accept returns...period. This is contrary to what their website states and is not displayed anywhere in the store besides the receipt you receive AFTER you've purchased your item. They eventually took the shoes back but only after embarrassing her to the point of tears. That sort of snide bullying from a local independent store breaks my heart. What's the point? And it seems as though a few other Yelp reviewers have had similar experiences. If someone makes a return or exchange they still deserve to be treated like a customer. Apparently some of the staff at Mohawk General Store don't feel that way. read more
