Since 1969, Maxfield is the OG cutting edge fashion and design concept store in West Hollywood. The store was started by Tommy Perse and this iconic location on Melrose Ave. opened in 1985. The store's striking brutalist concrete architecture is the perfect stage for the latest fashions and curated vintage pieces showcased inside. I've always been so impressed by the service at this Maxfield location. You are greeted at the door and the sales people do eye you up and down to see what you're wearing and your personal style but they are courteous and trying to help you find what you're looking for or what brands you like. Luis Rodriguez helped me and my friend this last visit and he is simply outstanding. Such a great eye for detail and so knowledgeable and passionate about Maxfield and everything they have in the store. Really helpful, and he made my friend's visit to the store special and he loved his purchases. This store has always been extremely cool and cutting edge and brought the work of so many new designers to LA. The avant garde design tradition has continued with their installation of a Jean Prouvé 1957 pre-fabricated "Structure Nomade" which was brought from France and reconstructed next to the store at 8825 Melrose, with a 100 year old olive tree planted next to it. They showcase stunning fashion and art installations inside its glass walls. Maxfield also has a dramatically designed Chrome Hearts store (by appointment only) next door on Robertson. You can inquire about it in this store. Maxfield is like a modern art museum with the statues outside, the stark angular concrete walls, the single large display window facing Melrose, the beautiful and dramatic lighting at night and the way everything is exhibited inside. It's definitely a must see in Los Angeles and there's nothing else like it. I don't usually write any reviews after purchasing an item. However, Maxfield indeed deserves the highest appreciation for their service on delivery and customer service. When I picked my delivery up and opened it (I ordered it for the delivery to Montréal), I was mesmerized by the packaging. It was evident that the team has done it with care and high-level quality! As regards to the customer service, it was just perfect!! The store employees are ready to help!!! My selection was a Dries Van Noten leather jacket. This luxury item is not only great online, it is memorable in terms of its design and care given by those who packaged it!!! I'd like to thank Melissa (the employee) and the one I talked to over the phone who definitely care to provide the best service possible! I give Maxfield 5-stars because I have never had a problem receiving good service when I have been a patron. I haven't been in a while, but I have called and inquired about items and I have always been met with politeness. The SAs are overwhelmingly engaging and some are even warm, contrary to some people's opinions. I will say this - Maxfield is not a place for looky loos or groupies. I have a sneaking suspicion that people take up space in Maxfield because they may have seen celebs photographed in the store or just outside of it. It's not that type of party, nor has it ever been. I've shopped here with my Mom and my Gran and both like the environment, so it is truly a place for all ages. You may not be into the fashions, but you may find housewares or jewelry that is to your liking. Are some of the prices 'ridiculous'? If we're being honest, YES. But that's the culture of fashion. Maxfield is not Old Navy. It's a place where everything from the displays to the fashions are meticulously curated. If you appreciate the art of fashion, and art in general, this is the place for you, especially if you have a few discretionary dollars to spend, even on a t-shirt. (By a few discretionary dollars, I mean $500, $800... maybe even $1,000.) I recommend Maxfield most to people who never treat themselves but have the money to do so. Those are the people who should buy those Rick Owens shoes, that Chrome Hearts bracelet or that custom Rolex. Always have a special piece or 2 that surprises you that you own. Everyday is an occasion and Maxfield is a good place to enjoy an occasion, so ENJOY. And don't enter feeling like you aren't good enough to be there, because people pick up on that energy and may treat you that way. You deserve! read more

Hmmmmm...looks like Maxfield's doing a bit better at acknowledging their clientele! Baby steps, baby steps. _________ My jaw nearly dropped once I was greeted upon entering both the main gallery area - a stark difference from my last visit! That said, the "cooler than thou" feel of the place certainly hasn't changed. Three years later, and I still stand by my "style over substance" assessment. Sure, the "curated" collection here does embody the bleeding edge of coolness (to a degree) - but it's hard for me to feel comfortable spending large sums of money at a place that makes you feel largely unwelcome. - No photos allowed? Despite the Maxfield ethos of standing out from the crowd, the store also adheres to a (counter-intuitive) no-pictures-inside policy. I guess they're just not into the idea of generating an online buzz! + To me, Maxfield's true value comes in the form of its limited-run pop-up shop collaborations. I recently paid a visit to scope out the Rhude installation going on through the first weekend of November; I was quite impressed by the tasteful collection of exclusive items offered at the temporary Rhude shop. To be quite honest, I found the pop-up's offerings to be vastly superior to those of the main gallery; if there's a silver lining to the whole Maxfield experience, it's that their pop-ups offer a selection of must-have items that you're seldom, if ever, going to find elsewhere. In short, my new takeaway on Maxfield would be that the main gallery remains elitish, snobby, and an overall not-fun time. In my youth my mother and I shopped at Maxfield Bleu. It was always a fun experience and from a young age I had a fun flair for clothing. Fast forward 50 years. I'm no longer in the area, but visit on occasion and keep up with things that are going on. I have this band from Philly that will be in California three maybe four days in September/October and I wanted them to hit Maxfields while they were here. But after reading the reviews on how customers are treated by the sales staff and managers I'm SO reluctant to recommend they stop in. I would be mortified if they were mistreated on at a place of my recommendation. I've never read so many awful reviews on the same issue over a long period of time. I'm going to think on this one. I have found heaven, no really. Maxfield has it all, and more. The set up is I would say very masculine and cool, vintage punk chic. I found my dream purse, a 1920's croc leather, perfect condition, that is until I saw the $25G price tag. No wonder they have valet, and security following you around the store. In no way could I justify spending that, but a girl can dream right? That's pretty much what I did, fawning over a ombre green chanel, super strappy alaia stilettos and making my husband take me to a nice lunch after pointing out that I just saved him 35 grand not indulging in such frivolous luxury. I'll be back, just to drool, their collection of Hermes alone, secured safely of course, is surely worth more than my house. Came here to do some shopping with my friend! 5 minutes into browsing we were demanded to try items on, yet we had nothing in our hands. After 5 more minutes once again demanded to try items on, but we were still browsing. Later on we heard the sales associate in the dressing room on her phone basically saying she's trying to rush us and get us out of here. Look, I understand that if it's closing time we should leave, but they never stated they were closing. Just being rude the entire time. After overhearing this I was pretty annoyed, but my friend asked to try something on. The lady said just put it on here in the middle of the store. Like what was the whole point of demanding us to try items on if we won't have a dressing room. Regardless, my friend tried it on over their clothes and asked for a bigger size. The associate said that size looked fine and a bigger size wasn't needed. My friend didn't purchase and we left. I think they really need to work on their customer service. It's rude to talk about customers and to customers in that manner. If the problem was they were closing soon they should've told us when we walked in and took or bags "by the way the store closes in 20 minutes." I tried to use a $1,000 gift certificate I was generously given by a friend at Maxfield, but was met by an unhelpful employee who had to call the manager, Jonathan Rimer, over for assistance. Jonathan told me the gift certificate had already been used. I gave him the contact info of the friend who gave it to me to confirm the purchase. He casually looked through page after page of handwritten gift certificate numbers. I was then told I needed to provide 'proof of purchase' or they would not accept it, obviously implying I was attempting to use the same gift certificate a second time. He asked me to provide my friend's credit card statement proving he had purchased the gift certificate which I was mortified to do, but complied. We proved the gift certificate had not been used and days later Jonathan reached out and unapologetically confirmed it was an error on their end made by a "new employee." I told him this whole ordeal of trying to prevent us from using a gift certificate at his store was unacceptable - you cannot take $1,000 and then simply refuse to redeem it. Jonathan initially offered to compensate and asked, "what would make you happy?" I suggested a one-time 50% discount on any one item. He said no and that he would instead refund the gift certificate in full. And so he did. Apparently, he was just over the situation and didn't want to deal with me anymore...which is absurd given he tried to scam me out of $1,000. I have been in retail for the last 20 years and I know a thing or two about customer service. This place has none. read more

I came here shopping a few times with my hubby and had interesting experiences here. Not the "tripping on mushrooms I just hallucinated a pink unicorn " interesting but exciting nevertheless. First off, I live in Manhattan and I perfectly get the whole " you size me up by my outfit" concept. But I come to LA to relax! That means when I walk into the store after a day at the spa, I reserve the right to wear a t-shirt. Just because I am not strutting the latest and greatest pair of blah blah blah doesn't mean I am not your potential customer. Manhattan has enough successful people to humble anyone down and there will always be someone more successful than you. The attitude of the support sales staff is even more puzzling in this regard.Be friendly! Smile a little! That's the key to sales, being personable to your clients! Looking me skeptically and following me around doesn't help your commission. On one occasion, my credit card got declined when I was purchasing my husband a pair of shoes for his bday ( I forgot to call a bank and let them know I was traveling) and I never gotten dirtier looks in my life. He ended up paying himself and the sales person looked at me almost empathetically by the end. Fast forward a few months later, the said pair of shoes ended up tearing after exactly 10 wears. Maybe George Clooney expects 10 wears out of his 700$ pair of shoes, I expected better! The only reason I am giving it a three star rating is because on my last visit I physically bumped into a guy who turned out to be Keanu Reeves. This is Maxfield's only window display, and at first glance, can be a bit misleading. The countless times I have trekked down Melrose Blvd in Los Angeles, I never noticed Maxfield. It is situated across the street from what used to be a fitness center, and there is minimal signage. What eventually caught my eye was the quiet display window showcasing a graphic pair of McQueen leggings on a mannequin decked out in biker gear, standing with her back toward the street, next to a motorcycle. Any store carrying Alexander McQueen, in my book, must be explored immediately. Despite its cold exterior, Maxfield, inside, is so homey I feel as though I've just trespassed into Alice Cooper's closet--with the eccentric touches of skull-shaped candles, antique gold desk accessories and some racks of mens' jackets and pants in dark, gothic tones. I first caught sight of a decadent silk tulle Lanvin dress, one that seemed to melt into my hand as I held it. Next to those luscious satin Lanvin dresses were some deconstructed Gareth Pugh pieces. A few racks behind those were printed Gucci tunics, Prada frocks, and a lone rack of Chanel's pre-fall collection. Each section is mindfully merchandised--and each piece of clothing is worth its three- or four-digit price tag--every garment will turn heads and warrant a second look. The mens' clothing and womens' clothing were divided by a long shelf of shoes--Dior Homme sneakers, Balenciaga sandals, and every corner is flanked by a glass display case or shelf of museum-worthy baubles and home décor. Museum-worthy--yes, but you can touch and take home. Aside from glorious jewelry, clever home adornments and unique designer clothing, Maxfield also boasts a distinct and highly-coveted collection of vintage Hermes bags. Every single item in the store is hand-picked by owner Thomas Perse (if his name sounds familiar, he's the father of James Perse--the unofficial king of luxurious basics), and judging by the merchandise selection, he was probably a rock star in his previous life. However, you don't have to be a rock star to shop at Maxfield. Its clientele is worldwide and diverse, attracting celebrities, entrepreneurs, collectors and fashion fans. Maxfield is the crème-de-la-crème of exquisite LA shopping--no shopping trip would be complete without a stop into this Melrose gem. Good Nike collab drops if you care about that. Sales staff is hit and miss, I've been helped by both Luis and Alonzo who have been there a long time, but they're awful for luxury retail. Other, better, sales people just don't seem to last. COVID has made it more of a disorganized pain then usual, but I know they run it like a small business rather than a corporation, so that's kind of to be expected. read more

Have to write a quick review for the amazing staff at Maxfield, in particular Kristina! She is my go to, whenever I'm looking for something new. She texts me whenever they get in new items she thinks I'll like, and always takes time to help me out, even if I don't end up buying anything. She genuinely cares, and I never feel forced into buying something(unlike other stores where the salesperson pushes anything and everything on you just to make a sale). My most recent experience here was harrowing. Any time you're at Maxfield, a floor salesperson will follow your every motion around the store. A young lady was shadowing me so I decided to ask her questions about the clothes as I was looking around: "Do they use beeswax on this leather to make it stiff and shiny like this?" "Does this jacket smell this way because it's made of hemp?" "Which of these brands of boot makers do you prefer?" "Do you think people are willing to pay a premium because these clothes are like pieces of modern art?" "How did you end up working at Maxfield?" The saleswoman who was helping me kind of answered my questions, but it didn't seem like she was used to answering questions. As I was walking around I said hello to one of their (many) security guards. He seemed surprised, so I asked him if anyone had said hello to him in the store before? He said I was literally the second person since he'd begun working there. Perhaps I'm too friendly to be their normal clientele. Maxfield is not a 'hello' kind of place. I was sitting on an ottoman looking at a large book by one of their designers when a middle-aged woman approached me. Looming over me, arms crossed, she began questioning why I was in the store, "I understand you have some questions. [Saleslady] said you've been asking some unusual questions." So I asked her what the designer had done to make the leather on a certain jacket look and feel the way it did. She said, "It's horse leather." Annoyed, angry. By her curt answers, she made it immediately clear that she had a problem with me. She said, "Your questions are extremely unusual. We don't look kindly on people from the industry posing as shoppers to gather industry information." I was really embarrassed - how could I prove that I'm not a spy? I could say I'm not a spy... but that's exactly what a spy would say... I was extremely uncomfortable to be subjected to this kind of scrutiny and paranoia. I tried talking to this woman, hoping she'd believe me, but after a few minutes of inquisition it was clear she wasn't going to leave me alone. She was still angry and I was shaking in my boots. I was sweating because she came at me unexpectedly, fixed me in an unwavering stare, began questioning me and wouldn't let me go. After talking to her for five or ten minutes she had made it clear I was no longer wanted there. I was mortified and shaken as I left the shop. One of the most bizarre and embarrassing experiences of my life. After leaving, I called their store and left a message for their general manager. I have not received a reply from the manager. I cannot recommend to anyone interested in looking at clothing or asking questions about clothing to shop at Maxfield. You are unwelcome there and you will be harassed because who knows? You might be undercover FASHION ESPIONAGE. read more

So...this is the worst business in LA and possibly America. While I was in LA for my girlfriend's sister's graduation at USC, I thought it would be a good idea to head over to Maxfield and try to buy the Apple Watch--since they are the only store in America Apple distributed the watch to. I called to make sure they had the stainless steel Apple watch and was told that they cannot confirm this, but they do have watches. Then I asked if I could go in and buy it, and was told I needed to make an appointment. I asked how about 5 o' clock and the operator said I had to come in to make the appointment. Already angry and ready to hang up, I asked if anyone was in the store and if it was possible if I can just buy it there. The operator said yes, so I called an über and drove 25 min from downtown to Melrose for this stupid trinket. When I arrived, there were three useless people working at the front counter. One was wearing an apple watch pin and laughed when I walked in and asked for the apple watch. The useless apple watch pin-man whispered to the other useless employee and they both chuckled, then I was told they do not have any in stock. I told the useless employees that someone from the store told me they had the watch. Then a the third rude, useless employee told me that I had to make an appointment anyway and they were really backed up, so even if I wanted it, I had to wait weeks. To which I said the person on the phone said Maxfield had no appointments. The now three confounded useless employees shot over a blank and disgusted look in unison, and I guess had an epiphany because the useless pin wearing one told me to come with him to view the apple watches they had available. WHAT?! Either they judged me on my appearance--I'm a 19 year old college kid wearing a white vneck, jeans and Adidas-- or the store has a philosophy that the less you sell, the more money you make. I was assisted by the only employee in the store who wasn't looking down or genuinely angry that someone actually walked in looking to purchase something, who was actually very nice. After I tried the watch on (the three abominations of employees still haven't moved by the way) and said I would purchase it; all three sprang from the counter and were so warm and fuzzy, I thought they were going to invite me over their house for dinner. They littered me with hundreds of that famous hollow word "sorry" and looked like they were going to explode if they didn't get my credit card in the next five minutes. Being the luxury store I assumed Maxfield was, I thought I could place my order and have them ship it to me since I live out of the state. Once I asked they harshly said "no" and almost forced me out of the store. These people are terrible and all they want is money. They don't even want people in the store to look at anything. They're the reason why tourists like me have a negative, snobby connotation with LA. No one should visit this store so it can finally close down and the cancer of Melrose can be done away with already. read more

While this store has beautiful and unique merchandise, I must give it a low rating because of my most recent visit where I was continually shadowed and stalked by an obnoxious young salesman who made me feel as if he thought I was about to rob the place blind. Everywhere I turned, there he was, hot on my heels and making little effort to disguise his efforts. At the very least, he should have been more artful in his scrutiny, instead of completely creeping me out. Was it because I am a fifty year old woman? Was it because that day I had a Sanrio rather than Gucci bag slung over my shoulder? I do not know. All I can say is that I have shopped there since I was in high school and its original location on Santa Monica Blvd. I have purchased clothing, jewelry and Christmas gifts there. Many times I bring people from out of town because the store is unique, but I have never been treated like this there. This place is hilarious. I admit, I was pretty turned off by the snooty and hostile experiences others have reported. However, my man and I had no issue whatsoever, and I am very sensitive to bad service (see my other reviews.) I expected Jeffery's style snobbery. Oh man, retail snobbery is the worst. Perhaps the management took note of the weird behavior of some staff and, eh hem, fixed it. Perhaps it was the holiday rush and they were up on their game. There was a nice tall young man who welcomed us, and left us alone after suggesting we come find him if we had questions. The clothing is well curated, though very LA fashion, as opposed to NY. So think, the brightest, tackiest and most opulent of your favorite Japanese and European labels. I hated the women's shoe collection, which featured mostly gawdy, strappy stillettos. The jewelry collection is a scream. It's very Euro Trash. I had some problems with the (ironic?) African trophy masks. Is imperialism funny or chic? I'm not sure which option is scarier. Oh, and then there are the fabulous penis carvings. Perfect gift for Mom! Aside from jewelry, the accessories are nice, especially the many soft wool scarves and blankets. They have some nice fragrance, though pretty light on the selection. I prefer the men's clothing and shoes by far. Hurry up, men, get over there and spend that money. Go on, TREAT YO SELF! haha. This store sells high end clothing, but in reality they are really ghetto and tacky. You can tell that business isn't great by the way the sales associates pounce on you the second you walk in. Despite the high ticket items, associates are a mix of aloof and ignorant about the lines they carry. The single hottest store on earth. if you care anything at all for Balenciaga, Yohji Yamamoto, Helmut Lang, Libertine, or Tom Binns, that is. The giant monkey statues outside should tell you this place is special and not for the faint of heart. Everything in here costs more than my monthly salary but I have never gotten the snooty vibe-people who work here don't make you feel like they are deigning to speak with you if you walk in without a designer bag on your arm. And I don't give a shit that I will probably not buy anything in here for years. Just being able to look at clothes where the detail in one lapel is more intricate than any whole outfit from the Gap makes me happy, inspires creativity and makes a visit here more than worth it. Also great sales. I bought my Rick Owens wedding dress here. But also some questionable Euro trash items that I'm sure the over-tanned over gymed film producers of LA must be buying. Especially the Jewelry-really cheesy in contrast to the gorgeous sophisticated clothing and accessory collections. Whitney is great. However, there is an ADD guy that works here who is a bit in your face/inexperienced. Bad jokes in your face style. I just pretend I am in an SNL skit and get through it. Mixed Feelings... I have been here many times, and the experience ranges from excellent to terrible. First off, the product mix is by far the best of any boutique store in LA... and is certainly a contender for best in the US (Amaree's in Newport, 4510 in Dallas and some others might top them). I can't think of another boutique that carries Chanel... on top of all their excellent clothing brands, they have a great selection of books, candles, knick-knacks and incredible vintage finds! I used to buy a lot of gifts here, you can always find something unique - and everyone I have gifted from here has LOVED it! My bad experiences on the other hand, were similar to some other reviewers I read... From the moment you walk in the door, a salesperson is pretty much "assigned" to follow you around and watch your every move. Sometimes they can be stiff, arrogant and almost rude. But I guess they aren't really the type of store that offers friendly service with a smile. Also, they are pretty stiff on returns - which is a bummer when you pay outrageous prices to support a boutique - when you could get the same items, with great service and a better return policy from a department store. If I could give zero stars I would. I would love to own everything in the store however I have never encountered a more rude and stuffy staff. I was shopping with my boyfriends family (5 of us) and we waited in line to enter due to covid rules. His sister and I were the first to be let in the store but were assured that the rest of the family would follow as more people left. Upon entering we were starred down by whom we discovered to be our "personal shopper" who said nothing to us other than a very forced and cold hello. She followed us like a stalker through the store, starring at us with extremely INTIMIDATING and DEGRADING looks as if we were going to steal something. When we told her our group was waiting to be let in she told us that we should leave the store so they could enter, however, we wanted to shop as a group. There were also already other large groups in the store so we assumed we were ok to wait for the rest of the family. She FORCED us out of the store, but luckily the rest of the family was entering as we were being escorted out so we were able to stay. The staff did not allow us to walk together as a group, however they were allowing other high profile groups to remain together. Basically, make sure you wear your Louis Vuitton's otherwise they won't treat you like a human being Despite enjoying their merchandise I will never return as I cannot support a company that disrespects customers who don't look like their typical buyer. This store is shameful and is canceled in my book. read more

I once found the perfect Hugo Boss dress shirt at Maxfield. It fit perfectly. It had awesome French cuffs and antique silver skull cufflinks. I wanted that shirt so badly. I brought it to the register and plunked down my card and resisted the urge to look at the price until I got all the way back to the car. It was the best $340 shirt I ever bought. Too bad the damn cleaners ruined it about two years later, or I'd still be wearing it. But that's another story. I'm a 'guy' and I'm not a big shopper, but an occasional trip to Maxfield is just what the doctor ordered even for us non-metrosexual types. read more

The clothing selection is decent. They are known more so for their vintage pieces (Hermes, Chanel, etc). I always stop by when I'm in the area. Getting good service simply requires knowing and acting that you're better than them. Snobs reign supreme here. The cabinets of vintage phallic pieces and devils are a hoot. read more
