I'd been meaning to try Mod Mop for awhile as the salon is under new management. I booked an appointment with the master stylist who is also the owner.
I found the owner to be knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. She was easy to talk to and appeared to be listening when I carefully explained what I wanted out of my cut and colour. I showed an older picture of myself taken the same day of a new cut, both a front view and a back view. The cut was classic - a slightly inverted shoulder length bob. I explained that I did not want the layers or ends to be razored because it thins my fine hair out and gives it a frazzled, frizzy look. For the colour, I showed a few pics I had saved on Pinterest. I wanted a light blonde with neutral mushroom brown lowlights for contrast.
The owner assured me that if done correctly, razoring the hair using sharp scissors would not create a frazzled, frizzy look. She also suggested I consider a warmer blonde colour, more of a strawberry, which I ruled out because I had been a strawberry blonde for years and I wanted something different.
The colour turned out beautifully. The roots were shaded and the mix of highlights and lowlights choosen was a very nice combination. The problem with the colour was it was not what I wanted. I was surprised to see that my stylist ultimately choose what she wanted, a warm strawberry blonde.
The cut was horrific. It looked nothing like the photograph. It was extremely layered and razored throughout. The layers were much too short for the length. In fact, the bang area that was formerly chin level was cut so short that it looked like I was growing out bangs. The layers were razored with scissors and looked exactly as I said it would - frazzled. One side was significantly more layered than the other and one piece in the front was cut horizontally. As for the back, she refused to do the inverted A style, but waited until she was cutting to tell me so. She felt even a slight angle would make my face look longer so she cut the back straight across. The blow dry was not good, but it wasn't surprising as it was so layered that it just kind of hung limply, too short for any real movement.
It was by far the worst hair cut I have ever had. Despite the fact that I am good at blowouts, I couldn't once get my hair to look good. I grew it out for three months and went to another salon to fix it. They agreed it was not a great cut and predicted that it would take another five months before it would fully grow out to get the cut I wanted. They also pointed out the big difference between the layering on the left side versus the right side.
Months later I am still angry. In my opinion, this stylist completely disregarded what I wanted and the warning I gave her as to how my hair would respond to razoring. I feel she had an image in her mind of what she felt would look good and she did what she envisioned regardless of how I felt. All I can say is if you are going to ignore a client's instructions at least make sure the end result looks good.
The only positive thing I can say is that the colour was expertly done, perhaps the best I've ever had, the price was not unreasonable ($230) and the brand of products the salon uses is of a good quality - Davines is a European brand that focuses on natural hair care products and packaging that is environmentally friendly.
