My husband went to get a haircut here on the day of our wedding... he had a good experience overall, and was able to make an appointment on the day of our wedding. Unfortunately I noticed during our first look he had a red line on the back of his neck, which got worse as the night went on and the day after, and now it is now scabbing. When I came to Modern Hair, I did not have a haircut for 2 years due to the 2020 pandemic. It was time for a fresh look. I was also dealing with postpartum hair loss, so I just wanted something shorter and refreshing to remind me that I was a woman. Kim 2 was my hairstylist. I had somewhat of a distaste brewing up on my noggin, and I spent a good time looking for a place to go get my hair fixed for a special date, and let me tell you that Kim 2 did a really fantastic job!!:) i went in with a butchered, (butchered because when you mix dull, school scissors, include bad eyesight, and horrible hand eye coordination, you get butchered. lol) heavy head and came out looking and feeling good about myself and my hair:) I highly recommend going , specially if you ALSO have a minor hiccup when you're blindly trying to smooth talk your hair with "difficult" tools!! :) 10/10 read more

I found Modern Hair because it happened to be near Victory Diner and I wanted a haircut and some sort of highlights. Without an appointment on a Saturday morning, I was happily surprised when Kim was able to see me. Inside the salon was beautifully decorated with live orchids and other interior plants. We did a short consultation, she gave her recommendations and I let her do her thing. Basically I had super dry ends from when I bleached my hair a year ago. She weaved in highlights to blend with the ends and then toned to an cool color afterward. Then she trimmed off the dead ends to make my hair look as healthy as possible. I can now run my fingers through my hair, it's great! Kim has both technical skills and a warm heart. She was so sweet in sharing some of her experiences with me and when I shared some of mine, she was so caring. I will be back I'm a few weeks to get my hair straightened and will probably make this my regular hair salon (even though I go waaay to long between trims/highlights). read more

I would like to apologize to Modern hair for scaring the pants off their other customers, but in my defense, I didn't know that waxing my eyebrows would be such torture. My eyebrows were looking pretty unfortunate so my friend convinced me to give waxing a shot. I mean, why not right? How bad could it possibly be!? (Just an FYI, I used to use an eyebrow razor so I've never plucked or waxed before) Boy was I win for a surprise! It hurt like a *beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep* Maybe I was over exaggerating, but I couldn't stop my mouth from screaming bloody murder. I swear, my mouth had a mind of its own and would not shut up. Luckily the lady doing my eyebrows had a sense of humor because she couldn't help but laugh at me. To make matters worse... my friend recorded the whole thing on her digital camera! It made for a good lonnnng laugh afterwards. After I stepped out of that tiny room, the whole salon was looking at me like I was nuts. A random older man getting his hair cut even said, "Are you okay dear?" Oh man ... It was hilarious. So I paid the $10 and have been too embarrassed to come back since! Don't let my experience scare you off. They actually did a great job. My eyebrows have never looked this good and I'm proud to report that I've dumped the razor in favor of the tweezer. read more

One thing I will never understand about hair stylists: you ask them to trim and take off max an inch, and yet they take off at least 3. I would come back to you much more often if you 1. gave me the cut I wanted and 2. Left my hair long enough that I could rationalize getting it cut again. Sorry to disagree with the bloke below, but Annie is not my choice for women's hair. I probably should have run for the door when I asked for an inch off and she (no joke) stood me up in front of the mirror and hacked off an inch while I was still standing (this was prior to the wash and all). The low rating is also in part due to the long wait I had, even though I had called ahead to make an appointment. Shampoo was good enough but the majority of my rating is generated from the cut itself - and lets just say I am sad that I decided to get a "trim" before my vacation. Goodbye long haired photos, hello shorter-than-I-requested style. This may just be the end of my cheap-whomever-will-suffice hairscapades. read more

I never thought I'd have a monogamous relationship with a hair salon. All these beautiful ladies are experts at what they do but Kim 1 has been cutting my (and everyone in my family) hair for 13 years now. She's always happy and it is very obvious when you are sitting in her chair that she loves what she does- which is an extremely important quality in a hair dresser. I have walked in without appointments and she's always been able to pencil me in the same day. Sometimes I have to wait a couple of hours but the mall is less than a mile away and a great way to kill time. I've tried going to other salons thinking I could get a "better deal" but that always ends up in me running to Kim with a hair emergency. Once I got my hair completely butchered at a Fantastic SAMs and vowed to never go to anyone but Kim again haha. Believe me when I say that Modern Hair is very reasonable with their prices when compared to other salons. I always forgot to write a review until today. Kim is the ONLY woman I trust to do my A-line properly. This is where the hair is shorter in the back and longer in the front. I have VERY thick, coarse hair (Thanks Dad) and during the summer it gets out of control if it's too long. I don't think many hair stylists know how to handle that kind of hair but they do here! Kim chopped off what felt like 2 pounds of my hair and added highlights. When choosing a color, I wasn't sure as I'm not very adventurous with my hair and didn't want to look dumb- not that Kim would ever let me walk out of there looking anything but flawless. But I showed her my two options and asked for her honest opinion. I think we went with sand pebble? I am not 100% on the name, I just know the word sand was in it haha. Either way, she picked a wonderful color for me and after all was said and done, my cut and color came out to $82 before tip. I can't stress enough how wonderful all these ladies are. I always get compliments on my hair after leaving and always send people Kim's way. She deserves the business and every penny. So if you want to treat yourself without breaking the bank, come see Kim! You will not regret it! read more

Modern hair and nails is a great place for a bargain price mens haircut that looks expensive. My partner has been getting his signature haircut 0 faded to 1 here for a few years. He says "it doesn't sound difficult, but it is". And "once you have had your hair cut here, they set the bar so high that no where else will do". Also "When I become famous I will still want them to cut my hair". Those are amazing endorsements! He has had great consistent haircuts from Kim 1, Kim 2 and Annie, but Kim 1 is his main stylist. One thing that is really awesome that she does is cut his hair, then wash it, then cut it again to ensure that it is absolutely perfect. Kudos! This has been my hair cuttin spot for 8(?) 10(?) years. Annie is MY girl and she does a great job, although my thinning scalp doesn't pose much of a challenge. The owner, Kim always welcomes with a "hi Dan, how are you" with much enthusiasm. Just a very comfortible, clean, chaos and pretension free environment to have one of those necessities of life taken care of. In my younger "have to be cool" days, used to go to the salons that served wine, was louder and more frenzied than a Hollywood night club. AND, you were there for a friggen hour +. I prefer this; $16 + $5 tip, out in 25 minutes. Bam! Done! Back to work in an hour, and that includes grabbing an awesome sandwich from Hollingheads next door. She listened to my requests and gave me absolutely what I wanted. Also knew how to style curly, thick hair!! My sister wanted a trim for her straight hair and Kim 1 was awesome. Came in to get my hair cut, colored and nails done. I was taken in as the 1st morning appt. I love that they are so kind and wanting to get to know their customers. I was there for a good 3 1/2 hrs and throughout that time I noticed that they knew their regulars, asking how they've been, etc. anyways my hair turned out great and I love my nail color.
