I went to Dr. Shin for a second opinion on a molar with root canal treatment failure, based on a recommendation from someone I know.
After reviewing a new X-ray, Dr. Shin told me the tooth had a vertical fracture and strongly recommended extraction. She was very confident in her diagnosis, telling me it was almost certain. She also performed a probing test and maintained her conclusion.
I felt uncomfortable because I had already provided an X-ray from earlier that week, and I try to minimize unnecessary radiation. I also felt that other treatment options, such as re-treatment or surgical approaches, were not fully discussed.
During the visit, I was surprised by how quickly extraction was recommended. I left feeling pressured, uncertain, and discouraged about trying to save my tooth.
Ultimately, I trusted this advice and proceeded with extraction. Afterward, I learned that the tooth had no fracture. Looking back, I wish I had sought more opinions and explored all treatment options before making this irreversible decision.
This was a very difficult experience for me, and I would encourage other patients to always get multiple professional opinions--especially for complex cases.
UPDATE 2026: Very disappointing billing experience. I paid the amount requested on the day of service, but many months later I received another bill that did not appear to account for my previous payment. The explanation provided also did not match the insurance claim details. After I formally disputed the charge, the office adjusted my balance to zero. I strongly recommend reviewing all statements carefully and keeping your receipts. read more
