My wife's beloved Eames lounge chair suffered a catastrophic failure and after doing a lot of research we reached out to Modern Conscience and a few others for quotes on a repair or replacement. We decided to go with Modern Conscience for the repair based on reviews and looking through the gallery of past work they provide on their website. Lee was easy to work with, great at keeping me up to date and always willing to discuss the process and our options. We just got the repaired panels back today and the quality of the repair was nothing short of miraculous. I purchased a Herman Miller Eames wire chair assuming I could separately purchase a bikini pad for it. Fool. I tried Vitra, who are less jealous than HM about guarding their parts from people who might need them, but I couldn't figure out whether their pad would fit the HM chair. Their reps were also no help and pretended to have no idea whether the chairs are the same dimensions. Pfff. Then I found Modern Conscience, who immediately made and shipped a beautiful aniline leather bikini pad with burlap backing like the originals. I also own a Lounge Chair and a Knoll womb chair to compare, this leather is of the same quality and the workpersonship is outstanding. Aside from the product itself I had a few questions which were promptly and courteously handled via email. Like many other bad reviews, I am also in the shoes of being unable to reach the owner via email. Not meant to leave a bad review, would just like to have some response with the order. I have ordered a Black & Birtch RAR base for my fiberglass Eames Shell. Was inquiring about whether the hardware (screws) for mounting the shell on the base is included. Totally understand the stress of the pandemic but some response for a customer with a paid order will be good enough. Just for us to make sure the order will be processed rather than ignored. Again, didn't want to leave a bad review, but it seems the yelp review gets a more efficient response. My # is 16893. Super pretentious, overpriced, and bad customer service. All in all, from the two orders I made... The first order was delayed for almost 2 months before it was shipped to me. The second order took a month for them to ship but they sent me the wrong part and was very rude about it when asked about correcting my order. Good luck emailing them because they won't respond you have a better chance opening paypal dispute so they respond. Stay with specialkproducts on eBay. They seem only responsive if you're high roller or have a big order with them. read more

Oh, boy. You, the innocent reader, may not have the benefit (and misfortune) to know how much of this response from the business is revisionist, at best, and flat-out wrong. I think anybody who is able to read ("value furniture over human life"?! and "pandemic was grueling but dealing with us was the worst of all"?!) can get a sense that something isn't quite right here. Simple fact is that everything we posted was true. We placed an order and were charged, and then received no communication. When we tried to contact the business, we were unable to reach anyone until we posted on their social media. I don't believe this company deserves your business. You'll see the owner post her own version, but it's really just her way of telling the customer that she doesn't care about them, and to spread lies about the fact that they supplied me with legs that did not fit my chairs. That's the point here. No matter what else happened, they won't take ownership of the fact that they sent me something wrong. I tried to be friendly and find ways to solve it, but all the solutions just made it worse. Below is a copy paste from their customer service. You'll also be able to see the photos I've posted. Direct copy paste from their company: "Argh. Herman Miller is always meddling with the authentic original specs... I can't figure out why. It makes it hard for people to fix their new chairs..." They acknowledge that their parts didn't work, and I tried to be enthusiastic and make things work, but at the end of the day it didn't work. I was lucky to be given a set of old Eames wire chairs, and due to their age were naturally missing a few screws. Silly me assumed that I could run down to the hardware store and pick up an exact sized replacement only to be disappointed when I saw how differently those Eames screws are threaded. A relative had worked with Modern Conscience in the past and recommended them highly. I learned that many of these pieces have parts that are difficult to source or are no longer made, so props to this business for finding and making replacement screws available that work with these old furnishing. Modern Conscience repaired 8 vintage Eames fiberglass chairs for us in January of 2019. The chairs were a combination of wide and narrow mount and Amanda and her team recommended that we replace them all with the narrow mounts. They swapped the brackets for us free of charge and replaced all the shock-mounts on the 8 chairs (32 mounts in total). They are a small company and you can tell that they can get back-logged with emails and I was really impressed that they were able to finish our repair in less a month. We live in Portland, OR and they even agreed to meet us closer to Portland to save me another drive to Seattle. I couldn't be more impressed with the quality of the work they provided and the customer service was great too! Be patient with him and the quality of their parts/work is worth it! read more

I took it in and after an assessment was given a fair estimate, then hung tight while the various challenges of 2020 hit Seattle hard. Finally! People who know what they're talking about and care about what they're doing. I wanted a specific (and somewhat uncommon) base for my vintage Eames fiberglass chair. I had been looking in a lot of places but couldn't find one. This base wasn't listed on their website for sale but I decided to inquire. Surely enough, Amanda responded to tell me they had one in their warehouse! They were also able to paint the base enamel black (it was originally chrome) for a few bucks too, so it could match my other chairs. Shipping took a few weeks, but I was very relieved that I was finally talking to people who knew what they were doing. So many shysters on eBay, et al. These folks are not just merchants -- they're enthusiastic about design. In the future when I change the shock mount configuration in my other fiberglass chair, I'll be buying everything I need from Modern Conscience (and it's all either vintage or made to original specs in the US, and not some cheap foreign junk). read more

Emailed the company (emails bounce back because their mailbox quota has been exceeded) and was given a tracking number stating the item shipped recently. Tracked the package and it has not shipped yet. I'm expected to wait another 3 weeks. No communication on their behalf about their delay. Would not recommend this company. I ordered their "Fiberglass Shockmount Adhesive." Owners of Eames shell chairs are often confronted with the problem of re-gluing shockmounts that detach in time, rendering the chairs useless, so I was excited to find a source for a proper glue to fix mine. The glue arrived with only these instructions printed on the bottle, "Apply to one surface, then hold parts together for 20 seconds." Seemed simple enough. But it didn't work. I tried it twice and the glue failed both times. I then contacted the company and was told the full instructions are on their website, detailing aspects of this job I'd neglected as I didn't know them. Guess I was supposed to assume that fuller, more detailed directions were only found online? This makes Modern Conscience seem unconcerned with customer service, when simply including a sheet of instructions with the glue would help customers avoid wasting time and money messing up their chairs with bad glue jobs that don't work. UPDATE: Oct. 3, 2016: I had a dialog with Modern Conscience, they apologized for the lack of an instruction sheet that's normally included with their shock mount glue, refunded my charge, and sent out a new set of shock mounts, making the best of a bad situation. Somebody goofed and that led to misunderstandings, but, based on their excellent follow-up service, I would give them another chance. read more

Was in the process or restoring my Eames Lounge Chair. I lost all the hardware. I contacted Modern Conscience and was set up with Lee. He helped me pick exactly what screws and bolts I needed. I had contacted another company and was given a time of over a Month!!! Lee has my hardware sent in less than a week. I mentioned I had a big party and wanted my chair to be ready. I have recently started educating myself on how to restore iconic MidCentury Herman Miller fiberglass chairs designed by Ray and Charles Eames. I have fallen in love and it has become somewhat of an obsession of mine. I have researched to incredible depth as to what sort of "Epoxy" works best on a fiberglass shell produced in the 50's-60's. I went out and purchased every single "Epoxy" available, from Loctite 1min to JB Weld "Grey" - the list can go on and on. I then set out to practice and test these adhesives to not only see which is the most effective but also which adhesive will bond to the fiberglass with the least destructive side effects. My favorite thus far has been the devcon 5-Minute Epoxy Gel (cream) but it still isn't quite what I'd like it to be, I was looking for more. Throughout my research into the adhesive community, I kept hearing about this "special" compound offered by a company called 'Modern Conscience' and that it was head and shoulders above the rest. I began looking into this company and all the testimonials from past clients would lead one to believe that they have been nothing short of amazing. With this in mind, I decided to give them a shot. To say that I have been let down would be a massive understatement, mostly because you need to actually have received the product you paid $226.00 (INCLUDING $9 for shipping lol) in order to see if you're actually satisfied with the product. My order was placed on June 14th 2017. Today is June 28th and I was finally able to convince them to send a SIMPLE tracking number for my order that was placed 2 1/2 weeks ago. And the tracking shows that UPS and USPS are STILL AWAITING RECEIPT OF A PACKAGE. Which means the ITEMS WERE NEVER SHIPPED! I made several attempts trying to get someone to offer me some sort of insight as to why I have not even received a tracking number, let alone an actual package with what I paid for. All I was was given was a "you'll get the tracking number on Monday..." runaround. It's truly unfortunate that I feel compelled to review this company in a negative light, but over the past decade of purchasing most of my items online, this has been by far the worst experience I have had. I only hope that the package gets here sometime this summer so I can fix the chairs I told my clients I would fix. This has done irreparable damage to my credibility with said clients. I'll provide another update when/if my orders actually arrive. Oh and I was offered an "in depth" tutorial on shock mount removal, which I assume was some sort of accountability being take or dare I say, an apology?
