Predatory practices towards Medicare patients I called Modern Chiropractic in early July asking if they accepted traditional Medicare insurance. I was told that they did bill Medicare for visits but the x-rays were not covered. I was informed that the x-rays would cost me $150 (turned out to be $175) and that the initial consultation was free (as advertised on their website). My chief complaint was that I was experiencing electric shocks to my funny bones all day long. I had one concern regarding a congenital spinal malformation which restricted forceful adjustments to my neck. I came in for the initial visit. When the x-rays were taken I was told to "stand comfortably." Please note I was not told to "Stand up straight." Another day and I paid an extra $25 for neck x-rays to assess how flexible my neck was. I was then presented with a "Treatment Plan." My initial complaint was never discussed. The plan was 24 (initial) corrective visits along handful of other charges for $1372.00. Visits to be paid in cash by me. The goal of the 24 visits was to achieve a 25% better posture. The idea being by bettering my posture my general back pain would be lessened. Not a peep about those constant zapps to my funny bones. Now keep in mind I was told to "stand comfortably" I wasn't told to stand up straight. I could have provided a perfect posture x-ray right then. When I asked about billing Medicare I was told that the $42 cash price per visit was a way better deal than the $90 per visit they would bill. This is an outright lie. Per medicare guidelines I pay 20% of allowable charges. Medicare either a UCR (usual, customary & reasonable) charge, or they entitle themselves to the business's lowest contract price. So I know that they have a cash price for $42. If that was the contract price for the visit then I'd have to pay $8.40 per visit. Nope they wanted 100% cash from me. I was told they would bill Medicare. I was presented with a plan for me to pay 100% of charges. This is predatory. I had said throughout the interactions with these people that I was financially strapped. I was told "we will work with you." What we will do is help you take out a loan to pay for our services. Disgusting. Today I opened my monthly statement from Medicare. I see that Modern Chiropractic billed Medicare for my x-rays. They charged me $175 for them. They charged Medicare $50. They were correct. Medicare didn't pay for the x-rays but they did illegally attempt to "double -dip" by charging me AND billing the insurance. They also charged me $125 MORE than what they requested from Medicare. Who knows what the contract rate would have reduced it to. I have no doubt that they would have tried to have me pay for all of my treatment while they ALSO billed Medicare. They did it for the x-rays, of course they would do it with additional visits. These business practices are financially predatory to people on Medicare. The same people who are are fixed and quite cash strapped. I have been so impressed with my experience at MC^2. I've been to several chiropractors in the past, and none have provided such a comprehensive experience. They take the time to really understand the problems and issues you're experiencing, and treat with multiple different modalities to make sure you are getting exactly the care that you need. The office is really nice and conveniently located, the staff is awesome, and I love being able to text the office if I need to reschedule or ask questions. I couldn't wait for my 24 visit recheck to write this review. This practice is unlike any chiropractic you've ever been to. Unlike standard chiropractors, you aren't treated like a cash cow to be milked 3x a week for a 40 second adjustment that never really gives you any real correction- just pain relief at best. This incredible practice uses adjustments. But they also use devices to vibrate your muscles and adjust your spine with a 'thumping' clicker. The main difference in this practice is that you get put into specialized traction devices that actually retrain your brain and spine to correct your alignment. They aren't painful and it's absolutely incredible what this can do. It's 1000x more effective than adjustments alone. You also get stretches and exercises to do at home. There is also a slew of supplements, kinesiology tape, pain relief, specialized pillows, neck wedges and all manner of "this will help you" there. I saw Dr. Joe years ago and he was the ONLY chiropractor, out of several dozen, that I've worked with, who actually got REAL CORRECTION in my back. Unfortunately I moved out of state 5 years ago and wasn't able to finish my treatment. My back only got progressively worse. At 39 I was in such constant, extreme pain that I actually sold my house to move back to Boise and go back to Dr. Joe. Sounds extreme doesn't it? On my first visit I told Dr. Joe that it would be worth it to me if he could just tell me why I'm in such horrible pain. 3 seconds of looking at the x-rays my doctors and other chiros looked at and thought were fine, he was able to show me how drastically misaligned my spine was. I thought it would take years to get it better. And I'm very low income, on disability. I didn't think I could afford it. But honestly, I couldn't afford not to come here. This was the reason I came back. I was ready to go into serious debt on my credit cards for the chance of getting out of this godforsaken pain that has sucked my life away. Turns out I didn't need to worry. They have a program that discounts services for disabled and severely low-income people. My God I feel so blessed. Only 24 visits later and I just got to examine my new xrays. I wasn't expecting there to be any real change because I only go 2x a week, and ended up missing a lot of 2nd appointments, as Dr. Joe is so in demand as a teacher he is always leaving to fly around the country giving seminars. (Yeah. You could be lucky enough to get a doctor of his caliber working on your back, right here in Boise!) I also wasn't able to do any of my home exercises because of the pain I have. So I was certain there wouldn't be any real change yet. I almost died when I saw the xrays. He has a program that superimposes a green line for where your spine should be and a red line for where it is. That way you can measure the degree to which you need correction. Mine was very severely off of where it should be when I started. 24 visits later and I'm almost in perfect correction in most of my areas! I really think it's impossible. But it actually happened. So Dr. Joe recommended I come in once a week from now on (AFTER ONLY 24 VISITS! When was the last time your chiropractor said you should come in less?!!) I've been in a daze since. I honestly thought it would take years to get my back sorted out. It really was in dire condition. I honestly feel like this has been a miracle. And everyone in this practice is so nice. They greet you by name and you feel like you're family. Gracie takes care of you like a second mother. Everyone is extremely competent and devoted to patient care. In closing, if you are in pain, don't waste your time or money on regular chiropractic that doesn't work. I can almost guarantee they won't do anything for you but take your money 3x a week, possibly giving some temporary pain relief. Don't let this opportunity pass you by like I did all those years ago. I ended up losing so much of my life to pain, and all because I didn't stick with the only thing that really works. I'm kicking myself now. I never should have moved away. read more

I got a pretty extreme pyramid scheme vibe from this place. They seem to be the Cutco™ knives of chiropractors. I was approached with a coupon for two free x rays and a consultation valued at $200. Pretty sweet I thought... What's they don't tell you until you have already had the consultation and you're about to get your two x rays is that the actually need to take FIVE X-rays that's day, totaling $75. So what what supposed to be free, turned into almost a day's pay. But I agreed to it, so shame on me. I wanted answers about my back pain. I would not receive my answers though. I would have to schedule an appointment for two days later and I would have to bring my significant other with me in order the get my results. I am by no means a doctor. I am not qualified by any stretch to examine medical charts. However, a spine X Ray that you draw a green "normal" line on and a red "bad" line on it doesn't take two days to examine. You pretty much just look at it. You could just point at it. Which was basically the entirety of the meeting we had two days later. It was all on the computer. You don't have to even print out slides The answers that I should have easily gotten on day one was now being explained that over the course of three more visits, two more x rays, and $200, we could then see if I could even helped as a patient. They make it clear, not everyone can be a patient here. I already don't go to bars with a dress codes. I don't want my doctors also telling me I'm not good enough. They are also not "in network" with my insurance. That's on me I guess for not checking. If i was covered, that would be a game changer. I'd be a dummy not to use something I'm already paying for right? Just watch out for that. Could save you a lot of hassle by checking first. They must hire from the same place my dentist hires from. The have an exclusively young, attractive female staff. Not really a factor, just noteworthy. Business is business. I get that you have to sell, sell, sell. You have to get your customers to commit to you as well as themselves. But if they are already in your office, don't follow up by ask fifty questions along the lines of: you want to be healthy don't you? You want to feel better don't you? You can see how you have problems right? And don't ask my girlfriend whether or not she cares about my health. What do you expect her to say, oh yeah, I don't care about whether he lives or falls into a dumpster never to be seen again. They are all super nice and sweet. The office is clean and modern. It's a really great idea and their style is cool. It's just their sales approach that I disliked so much. I still acknowledge that I have back pain and I want it to be better, but I didn't feel that that was priority at MC2 more than getting their hooks in and getting paid first. I have had treatments with Dr. Betz since 2006 and I keep coming back to him because I am more healthly by doing so it is a life time commitment. I was in a lot of chronic pain in my neck and back last December of 2015. With treatments of my neck and back at Modern Chiropractic Center I am enjoying life with more energy and pain free. I am able to do things that I could't do before because of the pain and low energy level. With the program I was on I learn even more healthly information to use in my daily routine of excercise to keep me in a healthy state.
