I cant speak for Jack as he didnt cut my hair but I was not at all impressed with Oksana. She seemed more interested in watching her soap Opera than actually paying attention to cutting my hair. I really wanted to like this place, and I thought that I would based on all of the great Yelp reviews. Unfortunately, my experience was less than pleasant, and that could very well have to do with me getting Oksana rather than Jack. I walked into the place, hoping to get Jack, but since he was busy working with another customer, he recommended his wife, saying she was the best barber in town. Remembering another reviewer who had a terrible experience with Oksana, I was hesitant, but the "nice guy" in me didn't want to make her feel bad, so I decided to give her a try. Bad idea. We talked about how I wanted to keep my hair short on the sides and long on the top, while maintaining a "messy look." Oksana affirmed that she understood. However, she cut the top way too short and after asking me what I thought, I answered candidly, "Well, it's actually shorter than I was wanting. I had told you that I wanted to keep it longer on the top." She told me that it wasn't possible to do "messy" when it was longer, but I replied that I had indeed done it before. I didn't want to argue, and the damage was already done, so I let her do whatever else she needed in order to finish the haircut. After a neckshave, without adding any product to my hair whatsoever, she looks at me and says, "There. Brand new man." I thought, "What? That's it?" The cut was extremely short, uninspired, and looked like something I could get at Supercuts. I was very frustrated. I was pleasant with her upon leaving, as I don't ever want to be rude to anyone in the service industry, but needless to say, I felt very disappointed and will not be coming back. The atmosphere was not as friendly as I had hoped either. Oksana talked with me very little, and when I tried to make some small talk asking where in Russia she was from, she answered wryly, "Russia," then complained that people don't know where cities in Russia are, so why should she tell people where in Russia she was from. Another time, while she was asking me about my hair, I was looking at her to answer, and she scolded, "Don't look at me, look at your hair." Not a pleasant experience at all. As I mentioned before, perhaps Jack is much better, but after this experience, I'd rather try somewhere else. Hope this helps. read more

As good as it sounds. In the past I have gone to salons to make sure I don't end up walking out looking too ridiculous, but no need to bother. Model Barbers was great. The guy is great, he laughs at everything happening in there and gets right to business. Cheap, fast and legit. read more

I love these guys. Unbeatable... I don't even shave my beard at home anymore. At $8 a straight razor shave I can come twice a week and keep it pretty dapper. Roman is our go to guy. He's been cutting my son's hair for a while but one day I decided to give a children's hair salon a try; thinking maybe they can replicate a hairstyle I want. I went in for a haircut...they were very kind, and there was no wait. The haircut that I received doesn't look bad, but the barber did not follow my directions at all. I asked for a taper cut and received a fade. I asked for an inch off of the top, and he took almost 3 inches of hair off. He scissor cut the sides and it looked fine to begin, but I asked if he would shorten through the part to give my head less of a boxy look and the gentleman took the clippers and buzzed an additional inch off. I don't know if he was annoyed or truly attempting to accommodate my request. Either way, this place seems fine if you want a high and tight or a standard fade, but if you have special requests and prefer that the barber spend more than 7 minutes on your head, I wouldn't recommend this shop. I suppose I've learned my lesson about bargain haircuts in New York. read more

I moved to NYC in 2011 and went here for a few years. It got the job done and I liked Jack and Roman. Then I thought I was fancy and started going somewhere else that was very chic and a haircut was $50 with tip. I realized how much of a waste it was since I don't have a long mane or styled coif, so I came back. Oksana is now gone, and the third guy is fine...probably better than Oksana so a plus overall, I guess. But Jack and Roman are still great and this place is as awesome as any other review will tell you. The only downside is, like most barbershops, there are no appointments. Sometimes you'll wait a little bit. But you can watch whatever fun/ridiculous movie they're playing or shoot the shit cause, you know...you're in a barbershop. read more

I cut off my very long hair (I'm a woman) about a year ago and quickly realized that getting my hair cut every six weeks to maintain my short do at $100 a pop was not feasible. I get my sides cut very short and keep the top long, and finally decided to just go in to see Jack at my boyfriend's rec to get the sides tightened. He did an amazing job, was welcoming (although I think perplexed at first to see a girl sitting there waiting to get her hair cut) and did exactly what I wanted, which is more than I can say for most hairstylists. He left the top alone, gave me a great fade on the side and for only 12 bucks! I even bring in pictures to him now and he does a great job of imitating the cuts. So ladies, if you have short hair and need an in between shape up, go to Jack! He's the man. read more

I went here for a simple shape up and trim based on recommendations from a friend. Not expecting any star treatment, but the place is pretty filthy even by no frills standards, they just sweep hair into a giant pile in the corner. Buzzers are dull and filled with hair. Oksana cuts my hair. She's sweet and gruff, but turns out gives a haircut like she works at a sheep farm. Just hacking away unevenly at my hair on top without wetting, combing, or shaping in any way. Even the buzz up the sides was uneven. I asked her to go back a little over the top with the thinning scissors to at least even it out a little and then I hit the eject button and got out of there. Would love to have a local barber that can do simple upkeep, but it's not them. read more
