Don't be fooled by the website! The hotel looks so fancy, spacious and modern...and maybe it is, if you're used to living in a closet. Don't get me wrong, it's a perfectly decent hotel but the double room was claustrophobia inducing. There was maybe (MAYBE) four inches of room between the first bed and the door (the door didn't even open all the way), same between the beds, and between the beds and the bathroom. Bathroom was pretty nice... If you're not traveling alone and require breathing room...keep looking. p.s. check out the attached wine bar. My sister and I had one hell of a time with Simon and the Australian guy (dammit, forgot his name). They were both foxy, funny, protected us from creeps and were happy to accommodate our need for non-standard drinks. read more

Good choice for younger business travellers on a budget. Their cheapest rooms are very affordable, I paid $87 for a double bed room. Their downtown location is walkable or taxi-ready with cheap fares to most places. It's a refurbished hotel, so the walls are thinner, but the fixtures are new, the beds decent, the AC units are new and individual to one's room, and the coffee is Keurig. I didn't look to the restaurants nor the liquor store, but I reckon people will fill those blanks in other reviews. read more

Reasonably priced for downtown theatre district? (Idk about the relativity in Vancouver), right by japadog though, and HMart, and downtown shopping. Hotel room layouts are pretty dated, you can hear everything from the hallway as the bed is about 3 feet away from the door and THE ROOM REAKED OF MOLD AND MILDEW, of course we did not observe any as it can be painted over. WHY IS THERE NO FAN IN THE BATHROOM TO DEHUMIDIFY IT? Like what? Who came up with that? We literally avoided going to our hotel room, and tried to stay out as much as possible because it smelled just so terribly. Small refrigerator provided, no microwave though. Closet is very tiny, provided hygiene products are low quality and were strongly scented. So hopefully if you get a hotel room here with a better layout (read away from the door), your room may has a fan in the bathroom to remove excess humidity and moisture and it does not reak of mold, and you do not have a ton of clothes you would like to hang up, and you may have a pretty decent, somewhat pleasant stay. Would not stay again or recommend based on my experience and preferences. read more

Fine room and good value for money for the room. Was a little strange to have a space heater in the room, but didn't end up needing it. Had a few minute wait to check-in, but not a big deal. They were a bit cheap with the soap in only giving one bar (when it is nice to have one for shower and one for sink), but gave extra upon request. My main negative experience is that the back window of my car was broken in the parking garage. Nothing was stolen from the car and the window was shattered, but held in place so robbers couldn't even reach in. When I went to pick up my car the "secure" garage door was open with nobody apparently around. The hotel was apologetic and refunded my parking fees, but I still have to pay ~$500 USD to get my back window replaced. read more

Great location, friendly staff, good price. No workout facility. The rooms are small but comfortable- they have what you need. The bathroom appears clean but smells like it needs a good scrubbing. I guess i can see the appeal of this hotel if youre a big city person, on foot, looking for a place to carry on the party after hours. Thats about it though. As a person from out of province in vancouver for business, this hotel does not even come close to meeting my expectations. Location was good. Everything else was not. Parking was 14 dollars a night. That rate seems pretty standard for downtown, however, those other hotels have on site parking that doesnt require guests and their children to walk out in the pouring rain, dodging panhandlers and party kids for a block to make it to the parkades 5th level, where guest parking is located. And then upon checkout, to find out they charge a hotel tax on top of gst/pst for parking? Honestly.... The hotel itself is not as nice as the website would have you think. Chipped tile in the lobby, 30 year old carpet on the stairs to the second level where i was staying.... Upon entering my room, i was greeted with a stench of mildew and urine. No bathroom fan is the culprit, no doubt. After my day long flight i decided "its only 3 days...have a shower, youll live". So i started up the shower, only to find that the water pressure was just barely enough to push itself out of the shower head. I had to stand directly under the head to get any water on my body. Ive had better showers in camp shacks in the oil patch. Upon checkout, when i learned of the hotel tax on parking, i showed obvious disgust with the hotel. The clerk responded with a "you should be thanking us for letting you stay here" attitude, typical of someone who thinks visitors to their city are a burden, as if im not "hip" enough to be there. So needless to say, the Moda gets 2 thumbs down. Staff attitude, poor plumbing, strange smell, and inconvenient/expensive parking. I recommend using your money elsewhere. read more

My first time staying at Moda and even though the stay started well; ok hotel, good location, good bars/restaurants I left the hotel with bed bug bites completely covering my body. Even though upper management claims they have special pest dogs visit the hotel every quarter, I would not take my chances again by staying there. This has been a completely awful experience, worse than the chicken pox. The lack of follow up and general concern from management was also very disappointing. read more

Great location, friendly service, and a few dining/drinking options attached. Loses stars for the size of the room ("cozy" is the nice way to put it) and the fact that the shower has the annoying ceiling-mounted shower head. Parking is available in a building across the street, which is great, but not ideal in rainy/cold conditions (also, beware, because people drive like maniacs in the garage). You get wi-fi and cable TV, though, so at least there's that! read more

Coming off a cruise ship and requested early check in, amazingly room was ready at 0830 upon our arrival. Modest room with appropriate furnishings and tastefully decorated. They've done a great job preserving some of the original building while adding flair. Staff is friendly and helpful. The real key to this hotel is location. Very convenient to theater, clubs, and entertainment. There is plenty to do through the wee hours. Room can capture significant street noise on the front side. read more

This is a little gem right downtown. Small size, big style, huge service. We were in town for a big event that had a tight timeline...with cabs way behind schedule because of visiting cruise ships, we were at risk of missing a key time at our event. The Moda was a mixed blessing for us. The room was very nicely furnished, beds comfortable. The place was within walking distance of restaurants and shopping. The concierge were all very nice, even though the restaurant they suggested was too loud, crowded and hip for tired travelers. The ONLY problem we had was the shower, but it was very difficult to control the temperature- and it takes all the relaxation out of your relaxing shower when you have to jump out or get scalded! read more

Bathroom is dingy, "queen size bed" is dingy(seems more like a full if you ask me), room over all just small and cramped. I would also like to mention very thin, thin walls. You can hear Everything. I was wavering between 2 and 3 stars for my stay at Moda. On the plus side, it was relatively cheap (about $100 Canadian per night), in a fairly accessible location, and I like the modern feel to it. The rooms were small, but that didn't really bother me, and the bathroom was fine, and the flat screened tv a nice touch. The staff was friendly and helpful when I asked for suggestions about sightseeing and heading back to the airport. I imagine the wine/espresso bar is nice (it looks pretty cool), though the espresso bar is closed on the weekends, and I never did make it to the wine bar. One other benefit, especially if you share my misfortune in getting sick on your trip and needing some down time, is that it's down the block from a nice market, so if you want any snacks, drinks or whatnot for your room, you'll be set. On the negative side, it was noisy. Really, really noisy. Noise from inside the hotel (as someone else mentioned, unfortunately thin walls), noise from the alley outside, lots and lots of noise. Between that and the hard bed, if I hadn't been tired out of my mind from traveling, I wouldn't have slept much, and is it was, I didn't sleep well. And when it comes down to it, that's what I need a hotel for, more than for cool decor or trendy bars. I'm not sure how much better you can expect for the price in downtown Vancouver though, so I guess 3 stars, but with the caveat to consider ear plugs or some such. read more

This is a mid-range hotel in the core of downtown Vancouver and we stayed for a few nights for a conference and a weekend in Vancouver. The hotel did have charm with it's detailed tiles and 100 year old elevator. But our room was loud because of all the equipment on the roof outside, and it almost always too hot. The shower head was just way ridiculously low. The staff was nice enough, but it was a little pricey for what you got. read more

Well, first impression sucked. The front desk person had difficulty communicating...so I wasn't sure if I had a room or not, nevertheless I opted for the adventure and went anyway..I think the staff is comprised of foreign exchange students. Upon arrival, huzzah! I did have a room..and I was way impressed by the decor. Elegant and simple. The black and white Northwest photography fit the atmosphere perfectly. It is a boutique hotel, and the rooms will be smaller. But if you get a suite at a sweet price then go for it. The suites are big and relaxing. The bathrooms have two sinks so you don't have to share, if you know what I mean. The room is configured like a small loft so you have a living room separate from the bed. Overall a great experience and the only reason it has a one less star is that the walls don't have that much sound dampening, and the neighborhood is slightly on the border of sketchy. read more

I would say that the hotel's best feature is its location. Very walkable to yaletown and other popular spots. It is an older hotel so if you go into it knowing that you wont be surprised by some of its "character" .If you are used to paint missing here and there or weird smells then you will be fine. no of these are deal breakers and I would stay here again if I had the choice. Location isn't bad. Close to lots of restaurant n shopping. That's about all that's worth for the money. I wish I would have paid a little more for comfort. The staff is wonderful and helpful. That's another perk. But by golly the walls are thin, the outlets burn out, the rooms seem a bit dirty, and there only 2 outlet in entire room. One blew out. The other fits the lamp n alarm clock. Do they not realize that we live in a world were we need to charge everything. The room wasn't as modern looking as expected. Bought the social shopper deal which was great deal. I asked to upgrade and pay the difference as the suites look great. They were taken so I was offered newer apt across the street. It was a nice space that is in need of some up keep like fixing small hole in wall below and stuff like that. The one big issue I had was the heating which is done by wall mounted heat pump. It never got the room warm at all. We tried the breakfast place which did have good atmosphere, food and espresso but we waited 1 hour and 15 mins to get our food. They also didn't have all ingredients for one dish and still nothing offered. I would stay here again if good deal. read more

Yes the walls are thin, yes the place has 'charm' = old, yes the blankets are thin, yes the noise level from the streets can disturb your sleep. However, the location and price definitely make up for this, as Granville is one street over and all other downtown restaurants and shops are within a short walk due to its central location. However I would probably not stay here during winter, as their heating system does not appear to be adequate (see posts by others). However, was able to take in the local nightlife and be back in minutes without having to cab it. If you are the type to spend more time in a hotel room and enjoying their amenities, than this is not for you. Just keep in mind that no this is not the Hilton, and really just a good place to crash. read more

The easiest major change would be to get beds that aren't rock hard. I guess it was a decent value for the downtown location, but I wouldn't recommend it for more than a night. Basic necessities hotel with a GREAT price. Has a cool vibe to it although it could use some updating. Greatest perk is that it's close to everything downtown so walking is totally an option. Even if you have to cab it it won't be too much. They have a great bar downstairs, too if you are looking for a nightcap. They also have a restaurant but i didn't get a chance to try it. One downside is the parking garage is across the street but it feels totally safe. read more

Friendly service. Room was clean with usual appointments. But it looked like the renovation had been farmed out to the lowest bidder. The floor in the bathroom was about two inches off of level on one side. The door pull on the mini bar only worked in one direction. Shower head was cheesy ect. If you want a hotel where they noisily begin to vacuum outside your hotel room door at 7 AM, this place is for you. With only one rickety old elevator that can take 2 passengers and 2 pieces of luggage, it can sometimes take up to 15 minutes to actually get on or from your floor. The hotel room was clean, except the bathroom which had some slight dander on the sink and floor. It's a great location though, and affordable. read more

Returning trip here for us, it was that good last time. Mostly the location, but the hotel is great too. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff very accommodating and friendly.
