The Modern Contemporary (Moco) Museum in Amsterdam, located in the Museum Quarter, offers exhibitions in Modern and contemporary art. The beautiful townhouse was designed by the cousin of Pierre Cuypers who was responsible for the Rijkmuseum which is on the opposite side of the square. I loved the current exhibit "Banksy: Laugh Now" and "Dali:Genius." The layout of the house and the small crowd made the exhibit very enjoyable and manageable. There is a nice gift shop in the basement. As with all museums in Europe, I recommend you buy your ticket on-line to avoid the lines. The Museum is open daily 10:00-18:00 and the ticket is good for anytime the day you book. The link on the Moco website will take you to Ticketmaster. The charge from the train station to the Museum Quarter on the tram is €2.90. It is a nice walk on a nice day. I just went back for my second visit to MOCO. I was interested in seeing the Kusama pieces after being inspired by the Kusama Infinity Mirrors exhibit at the High. I knew the MOCO exhibit would not compare, but I was hoping for a few more works than the few Pumpkins that where at the MOCO...but I am grateful for what I experienced. Small modern art museum in Amsterdam near the other museums. It is a converted house. We came here to see the Banksy exhibit and were not disappointed. The museum itself is nicely laid out. Don't worry, there is a gift shop at the exit. The exhibit of Banksy and Dali was nicely done. The art was well displayed. Some of the art had explanations and details which were in English. read more

We went here for the Banksy exhibit. The coolest thing is the room with the van installation downstairs which really makes you feel like you are in an authentic Banksy installation. They play the Banksy movie downstairs "Exit Through the Gift Shop" which is probably around 2 hours and I think still available on Netflix. It seems like a long movie to play in a museum. Would have been cooler to play a 10-15 minute movie of some sort. Overall the exhibit is very small and doesn't feel worth the 13 euro. There were a few Warhol pieces downstairs and a very cool piece by another artist with a scary animated bald female head in 3D projected in a room. I think I'd give it 3.5 stars, but I will round up. read more

First the good: short line. Nice space. I went to see the Banksy/Warhol exhibit, which was the only thing there, and was not impressed. I got the audio tour and it didn't seem to actually match the art -- a few times it would say something about the work, but was talking about another piece altogether that wasn't there, or it would say "the work behind you" when there was nothing there. Maybe the programming was messed up or something -- the idea is you tap the guide on a specific work's label card to hear about it, so it wasn't user error. Some of the label cards for the art seemed wrong as well, talking about a different piece. And the whole tone wasn't really about the art itself, or why it was important -- it was more that this piece is iconic, it's so famous, it's expensive, it's very popular, it's the best. Ok, why? There was very little about the artists or the art itself, more about the (supposed) reaction to the art, but not much to back that up. Maybe that's the idea, this is pop art and kind of what Bansky and Warhol are going for, but if that's the case it wasn't done well. It seemed like it was trying to hard to make the art (and by extension, the exhibit and the museum) seem important. Then when I got to the gift shop, I noticed that many of the prints were for sale for many thousands of dollars. Maybe that's the idea of this place, to sell art rather than show art. There were a few good parts, like comparing Banksy's piece to Warhol's, but not enough to make it worth it. Pass. Maybe try the other Banksy exhibit in town, the Stedelijk or the Rijksmuseum. read more

I'll go to any place showing anything from Dali. If something else is being shown there I might even look at that. The interior is lovely and the Dali exhibit is excellent. Enjoy all it has to offer, you will enjoy the experience. If your smart you will buy your ticket ahead of time during the tourist season. Any other time is should be easy to get in. read more

I was beautiful thrilled to see Banksy had art in Amsterdam. This is a beautiful house made into a museum. Best to get there early to avoid the large crowd. Banksy by is an amazing artist, one of my favorites currently, even if your not the biggest fan I would visit, it's well done. read more

If you like street art, it's wonderful. A relatively short tour that's not overwhelming or teeming with too many things to see, without a crazy crowd, and just enough info plaques to read about the pieces. I walked away with a deeper appreciation for elevated street art. read more

Cool museum (gallery?) and lovely location/building.

I'm a big Banksy fan being British and I've done the trips to spot his artwork. I'm also a Warhol fan and was intrigued by the display of street art and pop art side-by-side at Moco. The building its self is something special and the contrast of a grand old house with the contemporary art on display was pretty special in my opinion. The compostion of pieces throughout was thoughtful. I think a few pieces had moved to the art of banksy exhibition by the time we got to this which was disappointing but living here, I will have time to visit both. The girl with red balloon and one other iconic Banksy piece were missing. They had "Exit Through the Giftshop" the film playing and in typical Banksy style there were plenty of tongue-in-cheek items like a Banksy disguise kit to poke fun at the consumer. I almost fell over when I found a Damien Hirst original for sale hidden away behind the postcards on a windowsill and then again when Dali originals were on sale in the poster section. I look forward to seeing who Moco have on display next and seeing more of the Dali pieces in and around the house i spied. I also will add some items to my Christmas list from here.... read more

This museum didn't exist the last time I was in Amsterdam. I was also not familiar with Banksy when I decided to go in. I was very pleasantly surprised. The 100+ year old house makes for an interesting backdrop for the prints. I loved the Banksy works on display and Lichtenstein exhibit was good also with some prints that I had not seen before. I would add a note of caution that these are prints from a private collection and not original works. Other reviews have panned the museum for this but, since they were very upfront about it I don't see this as a detractor. read more

Just ok. I'm a pretty big fan of Banksy, so felt compelled to check out the exhibit at the Moco Museum. The highlights were his pieces that were preserved from actual walls of buildings but it was a little disappointing that a number of the pieces on display weren't even originals. There was also a Dali exhibition going on, which was just ok as well. It's still worth a visit, but you can't compare it with the Van Gogh museum one block away. read more

Came here for the Banksy & Dali exhibit and thoroughly enjoyed them. It probably helped that it wasn't summer and we arrived at opening time. It's a wonderful space to see art (people may argue against looking at street art indoors in a museum - but that's for another day). Although the museum isn't big, the exhibit didn't feel cramped at all. Friendly staff and a relaxed environment, I'd love to see another exhibit here. read more

Wonderful and so interesting! It's amazing to see contemporary arts from artist like Banksy that are still creating. The explanations in the audio tour are top notch. Location: In the museum quarter, a few steps away from the Van Gogh and Rijks museums. The place: Essentially, this is a house and not a museum. It's very small so expect to feel restricted as you move around the place. Also expect self-absorbed bozos to plant themselves in front of the art work with no intention to move until they're good and ready. Their aw factor at seeing Banksy's work is somewhat laughable but anyway. The goods: So, since I was in the area, and there was no line-up, I decided to go check out the Banksy/Warhol exhibit. Not because I am in awe of Banksy, but because a) I photography street art and he's kind of prolific, and 2) I hadn't seen his work in person before. While it was nice to see his work live, most of it were studio pieces - which is fine, but I enjoyed seeing a few 'street' pieces more. There are about 50 pieces on display - some of which you will not be surprised to see if you're familiar with his work. The most surprising item on exhibit was the SWAT van downstairs. I totally didn't expect that so it was really cool to walk into that room, particularly since what I expected was the way out! The Warhol portion of the exhibit (downstairs) was cool, but I admittedly didn't spend much time looking at his work. I was too busy inspecting Banksy's works. I noticed mention of audio guides in another review - personally, I'm not sure that's necessary unless you are unfamiliar with his work. Service: N/A - I just bought a ticket and moved on. Price point: 12 Euros. I find this price to be a little steep, and think that 6 Euros would have sufficed, even if it is Banksy. He's loaded now anyway. They've got a gift shop downstairs where you can buy prints of some of the stuff on exhibit as well as some of Banksy's books. read more

I was completely underwhelmed by the exhibit. Even with a museum card, I only got 3 euros off and the price was still over 10 euros with the audio tour included. The value I got for that money was questionable. There is only one level of Banksy work and much of it is repeated over in different rooms just in different types of materials (canvas, wood, etc.). So you aren't really seeing a whole lot of art. They said in the audio tour that there was stuff to see outside - correction, there is ONE thing to see outside from Banksy. . .that's it! I would get your money's worth and stick to the places where you can get in with your museum card if you're looking for a great museum experience. By the way, the movie downstairs was in a tiny room so you could only see if it if you were willing to wait a long time, or cram in, stand up, etc. I don't really recommend this exhibit. read more

The Moco offers quite a palette cleanser after being overwhelmed by the historic, ornate paintings and sculptures from the famous Rijksmuseum across the way. I love the Banksy and Dali exhibits, they are not too serious, very interesting and thought provoking. It's a much smaller museum so it's quite easy to cover in a short amount of time. read more

This is a wonderful little museum. Unlike other museums in Amsterdam you won't have to stand in line for hours. We were lucky enough to be in Amsterdam for the Banksy/Warhol exhibit and it did not disappoint. It was one of the best exhibits I saw on my European trip and I visited A LOT of museums. Best museum in Amsterdam! I stumbled upon Moco as I was waiting around for my Van Gogh entry time. I loved everything about it--the artwork, display, lighting, flow and outdoor space were perfectly executed. It was a touch crowded but that did not limit me from seeing all the work in each space. This is by far the best thing I've done in Amsterdam so far. The Banksy art is AMAZING. I put this above every other museum I've been to here including the Van Gogh Museum, Tulip Museum, Cheese Museum, and Rijksmuseum. Banksy's stuff is just so powerful, relevant, understated, and meaningful. He's a famous anonymous street artist whose primary medium is graffiti and he makes art about modern topics and issues including violence and pollution and such. It really spoke to me; I was much more impacted here than I was by the art at either the Van Gogh or Rijksmuseum. It's a relatively small museum but well-done and the staff were all really friendly. I think this is a must-see in Amsterdam. Cannot speak highly enough about it! I almost didn't come here and am so happy I did, I think it will be the highlight of my trip here and I'm definitely going to look up more of Banksy's art later and follow him and his work now. read more

Great current exhibits for Banksy and Lichtenstein. Both exhibits contained excellent pieces. The best part was the majority of the pieces were accompanied by editorials which shed lot of light on the work as well as its interpretation. Great museum. Highly recommend!!!!!! read more

The 'invisible and anonimous' artist Bansky is one of the most fascinating artists of our time. Moco Museum features a lot of original paintings, streetpieces, statues and lots in between. Perhaps the most expansive and interesting Banksy collection in one building anywhere. The Dali exposition is small but sweet. Very nice statues and furniture. read more
