If you're going to take in a modern art museum while in Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum is a good option. Admission is €22.50, but if you're 18 and under - it's free! Two hours is a good amount of time to allow to explore the museum, from my experience. Prebook your time for an optimal, smooth experience. It's actually right by the Van Gogh museum so can make for a good accompaniment to that. Weekday mornings are best to avoid crowds. Grab one of their free audio tours when you walk in to get all the details on what you're seeing while walking through! read more

If you're into modern art and design, the Stedelijk is a must. The location is perfect--it's right on Museumplein, so it's close to everything and easy to work into a day of sightseeing. The museum is huge, and the collection is incredibly diverse, ranging from classic modernists like Mondrian and Picasso to wild contemporary installations. Definitely plan to spend at least 2 to 3 hours here if you want to see both the permanent collection and the rotating exhibitions without rushing. One of the highlights for me was the cafe (Fonda/Sandberg). It has a beautiful, airy design with lots of natural light, making it the perfect spot to recharge with a coffee after walking through the galleries. Contemporary art museum located in the Museumplein (museum quarter), worth dropping by if you're into 21st century art. The original building has a red brick facade, built in 1895 in the Neo-Renaissance style, designed to house art donated by Sophia Adriana de Bruyn and the Van Eeghen family though has since them expanded to include other works. Major renovations in the last two decades led by Benthem Crouwel Architects, completed 2012, added a new extension which includes most of the front lobby, restaurant, space for additional exhibits on the upper and basement floors, and an unique escalator that connects top and ground floors. Nicknamed "the bathtub" for an uncanny visual resemblance when viewing the front of the building, its white color and exaggerated overhang looks very much like a tub yet to be installed. As for the interior, the spaces are striking with a lot of details in the architecture that make the building look like an art piece--clear glass windows encircle the lobby so you can see the original facade from the exterior, then angles, curves and staircases are placed to draw the eye to various lines and shapes in the modern wings, and overall the exhibit rooms are bright and open. Core exhibits include a number of mid-century modern and mid-21st century art of various media including painting, posters, sketches, sculpture, mobiles, photography and furniture. A free audio guide is available, though in the 1.5 hours I spent here the small museum placards were sufficient for me. Restaurant, cafe, gift shop and bathrooms are available. While busy, only the temporary exhibit on photography by Erwin Olaf was more crowded. Daily: 10am to 6pm, last entry at 5:30pm. The Stedelijk Museum is focused on modern art created after 1870. I went specifically to see works by Marc Chagall and other modern masters. Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondriaan, Jackson Pollack, Andy Warhol, and Ana Lupas have works there. Marc Chagall is one of my favorites, so it was nice to see his works showcased in the first room. The furniture exhibits are also very unique. The museum itself is also quite interesting. It was originally housed in a 19th century red brick building, but a bathtub-like 21st century extension was added later. The current entry is here. No reservation needed as it is not a busy museum. Used the I Amsterdam Card for admission. Otherwise, tickets are € 22.50. Good for a brief stop if you have a museum pass of if you love modern art. read more

If you are into all different kind of art, I suggest a visit. Some were random, some were head scratchers and some really grabbed me. I loved it all. I didn't take many pictures because I didn't have much time and was taking it all in. It's clean, quiet and the staff were very helpful. I really enjoyed it. read more

This is a very nice modern art museum. Everything from the coat checks to the front is clean and moving around was easy. There are tons of paintings and sculptures to see for the art enthusiast. If you have the GoCity Pass you can start with this museum and work your way towards Rijksmuseum. Definitely less crowded than that though. I think the critiques made against modern art here is completely subjective. There also isn't much else to see except art and sculptures (this is an art museum after all). Definitely add this place on the bucket list to visit at least once! read more

I loved my visit to the Stedelijk. This museum tends to get the shorter end of the tourist stick with most people going to the Rijksmuseum. I think they're missing out as this museum is FAB. I've been to great art museums around the world and this one hits the sweet spot with lots of the modern art that I really appreciate. There is a large contemporary art area with a few things that had me scratching my head. The "Migrant Artists in Paris" exhibit was impressive with Degas, Kandinsky and Leger. The "Chagall, Picasso and Mondrian" exhibit was wonderful as well. Piet Mondrian is one of my favorite artists and there were several here. Because it's not the biggest museum in Amsterdam, it is not nearly as crowded. I was here for over three hours in the evening and there were not many people here at all. Diverse collection of modern art by many well known artists. HOWEVER, the method of displaying the pieces makes it very inconvenient, frustrating and time consuming to view....to say it nicely. Instead of individually labeling each piece of art with the artist's name, the artwork's name and the description, there is a single plaque with a description of multiple art pieces, 4, 8, 10, 15, etc. The plaque/signage is often far from the actual artwork (5 meters in some cases) so an observer is forced to walk back and forth trying to match the individual artwork with the appropriate description. Crazy, archaic and ineffective. How difficult can it be to have an individual label on each piece like every other museum in the world we have visited?! This aspect ruined our entire visit and the resulting frustration made us skip reading anything and we rushed through to end our visit as soon as possible. Why oh why isn't the management reading and correcting this common complaint? The most (and only) disappointing experience in our 5 days of Amsterdam museum visits. And a unnecessary injustice to all of this artwork. read more

I love looking at modern art and the Stedelijk Museum definitely gave me lots to look at. I popped into this museum while visiting Amsterdam alone. I didn't take one of the audio tours because I didn't know they were available - I wish someone at the desk would have notified me. I didn't see them until I saw people with them when I was halfway through the galleries. It's hard to provide any relevant commentary on Modern Art. There didn't happen to be a ton of art that truly captured me while I was there, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and anyone could have a vastly different experience. I really loved the large room with writing on the walls- there was so much that I couldn't even capture it all in one photo, but it was a stunning room to stand in. The building itself it really unique, but you'll find that much of the space is taken up by the open air atrium, making the museum feel smaller than I expected. All in all, if modern art is your thing, you should definitely check out Stedelijk. read more

This museum is freaking MASSIVE! Seriously, take your time and really enjoy looking at the works of art. I went into this not knowing much about what they had on display here, but was pleasantly surprised. Works ranging from Picasso to Piet Mondriaans and even more modern and contemporary artists pack this place with their work. Luckily it wasn't too busy when I went and was able to slowly make my way around the exhibitions. I will admit some of the galleries were a bit too abstract for me and I wasn't able to get into them fully. Like most museums and tourist attractions in Amsterdam, this place offers coat check so you can stow away your coats and backpacks/bags (which was amazing as it was raining and cold the week we went). We used our 'I Am Amsterdam' card for admission to the museum, so for the price of Free.99 this was a great way to spend an afternoon. read more

Modern Art museums can be a bit hit or miss. This one knocked it out of the park. This seems to be a bit of a hidden jewel amongst the Amsterdam Museum scene. A Rodin sculpture was sitting right by the entrance off the park. Love his work. You'll also see some works from Monet, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Lichtenstein, and Picasso. There is a good flow to this place and it wasn't busy at all. The trippy white and black rooms on the lower floor are wild. Free wifi and lockers. There's also a nice park outside if you need to take a coffee break between museums. Scooby snack. read more

FREE LOCKERS lmao I'll say it again they have free lockers!!! A godsend if you're a tourist with a stupid amount of bags. This is also a brilliant museum with curators who actually know how to curate. Space is approached delicately, collections are arranged tastefully. I don't know about the Rietveld graduate shows, but that doesn't really have much to do with the Stedelijk, so whatever. Love the gift shop & bar too - only comment is that it'd be nice to hire restaurant staff that is genuinely into being restaurant staff - I have some bespectacled busser walk around awkwardly like a bored crow wearing doc martens in the summer heat - total distraction from my salad. Also my drink wasn't opened nor poured - is this Austria, I'm sorry? On the flip side, the museum staff is a DREAM. They're friendly, happy to be working, and best of all, they're informed about the works! It makes me sad that this is so rare, I was so flustered and impressed with the effect is has on a viewers reception of an artwork - no longer does it have to be made conceptually inaccessible behind a wall of pointless curatorial text, a real person with shining eyes is actually invested in talking to you about it & will invite you to inspect every detail rather than awkwardly run to the next room. I loved it so much I was almost late to my flight that day. read more

Disappointing for a national museum. Pros: The building itself is interesting, and they showcase several important and/or noteworthy pieces from the modern + post-modern art eras. Various pieces throughout the museum were quite impressive and/or thought-provoking (paintings, 3D installations, and videos). Cons: Much of the modern art lacked a depth of meaning or was very disappointing. There was one display of 10-15 black rotted potatoes hanging from the ceiling - the artist admitted there was no meaning behind the potatoes, and these were just a small portion of the entire original installation. Additionally, half of floors 0 and 1 were closed down and shut off. read more

From strange short films to interactive art work. The mosaics locates in this museum were colorful and eye appealing, the statues were nothing but unoriginal. A great museum, if you like modern art - and I do! The docents could be more well informed. I noticed on the website, that the Stedelijk owns a few Schieles. As he is MY GUY, I wanted to see them. Sadly, they were not on display at the time I was there. Had an hilarious exchange with the docent, when I asked where they were. "Egon Schiele? Egon? Schiele?" to which I got the reply "E JON?" Okay, let's go with that. And she proceeded to show me the images I'd seen at home. Ooooooookay. We did end up catching a major show of work by Jean Tinguely, who I was not familiar with before. Well, I am now, and he's a genius. That show made it so worth the visit. read more

Modern art is misunderstood today, in much the same way the classic works of Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Monet, and Van Gogh were misunderstood during their time. What I like about modern art, as much as all other art, is the ability to give a fresh perspective or view of the world, but this time, with a lesser tendency for the item to be collected as a plaything for the rich, e.g. Banksy. Modern art has a strong impact and influence in our daily lives. Our very buildings, workplaces, your iPhone, your car; are all strongly influenced by trends in the art world, current technology, and vice versa; taking the rocket wings on the automobiles of the 50s and 60s as an example. And somehow, modern art galleries make really great pictures on any camera. So before critiquing a Piet Mondrian masterpiece, as something "I can do myself," ask yourself; why didn't you? read more

Lots of graphic design including 2 huge walls of posters. Very nice blending of the old part of building with the brand new part of the building. Just reopened after extensive renovation. A really complete museum when it comes to 'modern' art, the collection runs from pretty much 1890 untill the current day. It has pieces from some really big names like Kandinsky, van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne, Chagall, Picasso, Mondriaan, Appel, Haring and Lichtenstein to name just a few. Besides the regular collection they also regulary have temporary exhibitions. Currently they have several rooms in collaboration with the Tate Modern with work by Marlene Dumas. If you're into architecture the building itself will also appeal to you with its unusual shape. There is a litlle restaurant inside, and on sunny days you can enjoy your lunch and coffee outside. The price is good for the quality you get and the wardrobe is free. read more

The Stedelijk museum is Amsterdam's modern art museum recently opened. The design and architecture are very cool, a combination of the old brick building and new modern design. While it houses an interesting and contrasting collection of old and new (much like the design of the building), the exhibits as they stand currently (November 2012) lack a WOW factor; especially in comparison to other big cities' modern art museums. With this said, the new annex is currently not open due to an installation. And when you are finished in the maze of the building the restaurant is really good and great for people watching on the museumplein. I would give it a three stars mainly for the design and architecture, not for the collection. Based on collection only, that would be a two. read more

A diverse but limited collection keeps this from being one of my favorite modern art museums. Only one or two pieces from any artist really doesn't give you much of a sense of the body of their work. I went through all 3 English audio tours and really didn't get much out of it. For folks interested in graphics design, their collection of their own promotional material over the years is the most unique aspect of the museum. For some, the physical design of furniture and even the Mac might be interesting but I have seen a better collection in the Smithsonian. read more

On my recent trip to Amsterdam,I spent a fascinating day at the Stedelijk Art Museum.Even though,I did not fully understand Anna Imhof's enormous mixed media creation,"Youth",I thought her photography was superb and Anna Imhof is so inventive.This temporary exhibit ends soon.I also saw wonderful Textile Art by Sheila Hicks and Yto Barrada. Favorite Pre-1950's paintings at this modern art museum were;Hendrick Mesdag's marvelous seascapes,Anna Boch's"Woman in Landscape",Vincent Van Gogh's"Augustine Roulin",Henri Matisse's"Parakeet and Mermaid",George Grosz'"Agitator",Max Beckmann's"Double Portrait",Alexei Jawlensky's"Landscape",Pablo Picasso's"Aubergine",and Marc Chagall's"Self Portrait With 7 Fingers". Of course this is a great museum, they have a terrific collection. It was recently renovated, seemed like it took forever, so it's all sort of "new feeling" which is nice. The traffic flow there is not great though. I was surprised by that. And the wait to get in is outside, long long lines etc. you would think they have that better organized. Amsterdam has many days of rain. The cafe is nice, but the service at it is terrible, slow, rather rude. Three stars since the outside wait is miserable, and the inside flow is not very nice either. I have a museum card, so entry is "free", but there were people complaining about the price in line next to us. Five stars for the collection they have though. read more

Great museum! I ventured there for the Mike Kelley exhibit (fascinating, hilarious, unsettling, good stuff). It was my first time at Stedelijk. I'm a fan. After thoroughly exploring Kelley's work, I meandered into the other rooms of the museum - they have a great collection of art. The space is used well. It's modern, pretty inside. Nice staff. Cameras allowed. Cozy cafe/restaurant. I can't wait for another exhibit. I really enjoyed this place. Have fun! read more

Spectacular, huge museum. Great exhibit on Nam June Paik. Huge gallery, great educational experience. Would absolutely recommend.

We were disappointed that the Van Gogh museum had moved to a different site for remodeling, so we settled for the neigboring Stedelijk. However, we were very pleasantly surprised with this museum, from its modern collections to the huge bathtub structure outside and the awesome gift shop. If the cafe is crazy crowded like it was on the Sunday we visited, there's a grocery store adjacent to the museum. Get some picnic items and people watch on the lawn area. read more

Stedelijk is a modern art museum that I visited to take full advantage of my museum card. With modern art, I feel people either dig it, or they don't. I tend to be in the "meh" camp about modern art as I am often wondering what the hell I am looking at. I felt that way when visiting the Stedelijk, but still enjoyed the museum overall. There was an exhibit by Jon Rafman when I visited that was easily one of the strangest things I've ever seen. It's called "I Have Ten Thousand Compound Eyes and Each is Named Suffering" and if you're intrigued by weird stuff on the internet and strange online subcultures and fetishes then you'll love this. Strange, but worth checking out if you don't mind feeling creeped out at times. read more

A jewel in the Amsterdam museum scene!! Renewed since not too long, you can admire from outside the newest wing which had been named bath tub from the Amsterdammers :) Really really nice.. great pieces inside. Modern art arranged in ample spaces which are great to enjoy and view them with peace and not too much crowd. Great restaurant downstairs and also upstairs. A place definitely to visit if you live in Amsterdam or just pass by. read more

I thought the museum was plenty big. I enjoyed the early works very much- especially the room of Mondrian's work. Loved the Mondrians. I would say I liked about 20% of what was in the musuem- but I'm no modern art lover. I really did not like most of the works. The rooms with design elements, furniture, jewelry and household items were interesting, and I'm glad I saw them. For me, a non- modern art person, it was still a good visit- so I imagine if you like modern art you'd like it a lot more than me. I am a person who is quite intrigued by art and culture. Consequently, I am a fan. Though not sure on the assessment criteria, I think that the Stedelijk museum is a good one. One thing that I absolutely love about the Stedelijk, is that it stays open until on Thursdays. I think more musea need to implement the Thursday evening (or generally an evening) opening times. I find it a pity that as a working person, you can only visit a museum in the weekends. Let's be honest, if you work all week, you definitely do not want to wake up at 8am on a Saturday to make it to the entrance before the massive queues start appearing around 10am. Thus - massive plus point. I think the permanent collection is quite good. I like the original furniture pieces that have been re-made and can be seen in the countless hipsterseized places around out beautiful city. My personal favorite, however, is the massive blue painting by Barnett Newman. But that is probably also because I love blue. So I am hypnotized by this one :D read more

Absolutely love this modern art museum. The permanent exhibition includes some of the big names such as Chagall, Mondrian, Kandinski, Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso, you name it! Few but beautiful pieces... ! The upstairs floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions and they're in general totally worth a look. At the moment they have the amazing work of Marlene Dumas at display, I discovered this Dutch painter and totally loved it. The best part is that it's never crowded, contrary to other museums in the area (still don't understand why...). There is free wifi and a café upstairs, as well as a restaurant (outside). Free garderobe. A cute museum store. A must-see for all modern art lovers!! :) read more

I'm reviewing the newly opened Stedelijk Museum. This museum has a great collection. Actually, they have a very very interesting collection of works from 1950s onward and a just OK collection of modern work prior to the 1950s. But that is OK, because their 1950s onward collection is very very good. I especially enjoyed the new installation that is part of the escalator that takes you from the basement to the 2nd floor. I rode that escalator up and down about five times to get the full experience. You should do it to (I tried to buy the audio recording for that piece from the gift shop but it isn't available). There are several other 'spaces' (a funky surreal reproduction of a 1960s diner, Dan Flavin's work in the main stairwell, etc...) and lots nice digital pieces and digital art. TIP: Almost no one really understands new modern work so I'd suggest getting the audio tour for 5 Euro. It's very informative. There are three possible audio 'tours' (one for the each section of the museum - Dutch design, old modern art, new modern art), but just walk quickly through the two sections on the 1st floor and then spend most of your time on the 2nd floor (1950s forward). The audio tour is kind of wacky though because they suggest you see the works in the order they provide, but I found it very difficult to find the works in the right order so I ended up just typing in the numbers when I came across them. But anyway, the information in the audio tour was useful. Definitely a must see when in Amsterdam. TIP: On Thursdays they are open until 10:00 pm so that's a good day to go. p.s. I walked by this museum on different days. Each time there was a guy playing the cello at the front entrance. What was weird was that across the three times I heard him (separated by days and then hours) he was playing the same piece. It's a good piece (heard it before but can't recall the name) but maybe that's the only piece he knows? read more

There are some great works here like Chagall, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse at the Stedelijk Museum. The Pop Art, Warhol (photo exhibit) and ZERO exhibitions are fun. I don't know a thing about art, but there was an audio book for 5 euros that helped. The atmosphere is less push and shove than other museums because it's' less busy. This museum has a really interesting architecture. From outside it looks a little bit like a big bathtub. But inside the transition from the new to the old buildung is a nice solution. Now the visit itself. I expected more imperssionist art. More Monet, van Gogh and so on. Especially the famous works, but they only had a few not so common paintings and a lot of "art" I don't get or don't see as art. I mean, there was a big black picture. Only a black painted canvas. Maybe I am not the right target audience for that. For me this has nothing to do with art. But there are some nice paintings, too. So if you are interested in architecture as well and have the museums card anyways, give it a try. Otherwise wait for a free museums day or a cheaper price, because the 15 euro aren't worth it.
