This time I…read moreneeded a toilet fill valve replaced, a hot water faucet repaired, and possible insertion of a bidet wand on one toilet. I had the fill valve purchased new from Home Depot as I thought it would save me money to have my own new part. I also had the bidet wand. As is typical for some companies today there was a charge to come out--not to be applied towards my bill. The young man came in to see what the work was and then out to the truck to call the office on pricing. I told him/showed him, the fill valve I had purchased. He told me they will not use customer provided parts. I asked him to ask the office again about this policy , he did, and nothing changed. His pricing for these 3 jobs was over $900. I told him I wanted parts and labor to be itemized. Answer was 'we don't do that', 'we have flat fee pricing'. Between the cost and their refusal to use the new part I bought, I told him to only handle the fill valve part of the job however I insisted on an invoice with parts and labor itemized. Again, they refused to do so. I called the office to speak to the service manager, and he again refused to comply with my request, again repeated the flat fee pricing. In the end I got no-where. I asked to see the box the new fill valve came in--no surprise--same company part as what I had purchased. Cost for the 11 minutes max it took him to replace the part? $373.12 to include the $79. arrival charge. Did not get an itemized bill. What are they hiding? Knowing cost of parts and cost of labor is a routine and reasonable request of a customer, and many companies automatically provide this information without being asked. Addendum: I had the other 2 parts of the initial job completed by another company for $265.00 and automatically received an itemized bill. Note that even combining the two companies charges, the total is not close to exceeding $900 which Hirschberg quoted when they job costed initially.

I got a number of bids to have my new home's chimneys re-crowned as well as having a new cap installed on one of them. What ended up making me choose to have SHCS complete this work for me was how quickly my quote request was returned, the honesty in Bob's answers to all my questions. I contacted Bob in late December and he explained the work couldn't be done till spring but that he'd take a look at my chimneys and get me a quote, which he did immediately. When I agreed to have him do the work he scheduled me for spring and as soon as it was warm enough I got a call to schedule the work. He explained the weather looked clear for the coming Tuesday which worked well for us so I agreed. He than showed up on Friday the week before and completed the work because the weather was nicer than expected. Who can complain about quicker service?!?!? All that said, the thing that really pushed me to a 5 star review the most was the emails I got immediately following the work as well as a call confirming the work was completed. But the email really did it for me, it included my work order and before and after photos of the work. That is one of those little things that makes a huge difference to me and honestly Bob was already pretty set for 5 stars before the email. Finally no more leaky chimney that the previous owners neglected. TL;DR - fantastic service, ideal pricing and before and after photos emailed as promptly as possible.

"We have to take all the floorboards up and replace the pipes with new ones." I protested his price but he insisted. I figured since he's been a plumber 50 years he knows more than me. Truth is He looked at that leak and new instantly it'd be a simple fix. His worker left and came back from Home Depot then cut off the 3 valves and soldered on new ones. Thats about an hour total. HE NEVER TOUCHED THE FLOORBOARDS. The price remained $550. He stated "I said I MIGHT have to go in the floorboards. You still owe $550." What?! The job should not have cost $550! I was cheated. He also tried to get me to fix the clogged Shower drain...using the same embellishment scare tactics. Said it would cost $2300!! I got a new plumber to do it for $300 the next day. It was a very simple fix. He cut the floor open and replaced the clogged "Trap". It took a combined 30 minutes. After my original review Joe put my name, profession and ADDRESS in his response which was deleted by Yelp after I flagged it. Dirty. Then he sent me a message calling me a "Fat Overweight Slob". Classless. My Profession and where i live has NOTHING to do with our dispute...And it's a violation of my rights and Yelp's guidelines. The bottom line is i Failed to get a written contract before the work started. Now i know.

When a referral is made, it's your reputation on the line too. Wasted time and money and still without a warm fire on these cold nights. Gas insert: Complete waste of money. The propane fumes overwhelm the house within minutes, the smoke detector goes off almost instantly, the mantel and everything on top of it is extremely hot to the touch - apparently the wrong unit/system is not appropriate for a family room. As I mentioned in my original post, this was my fault too since they did provide price up front. Will I choose them to do my job next time? Maybe. However I would definitely do some research first if time permits. The new heater is really quiet and I am happy about that. Another point I want to raise is that the plumber did a good job on installation but not the clean-up part. My wife and I spent almost an hour to clean up staircase and basement last night and we also found out there was some new dents on stairs. Below is my original review: _____________________ I felt like I got ripped off today. Water heater was leaking so I called ServiceMark since they installed for old owner and left a phone number on the old tank. They charged me $4663. I was in a desperate mood and was in and out of teleconference so I didn't do any research(totally my own fault). Now I have time and did some research and called some plumbers for quotes. The number was substantially low. I felt stupid and got robbed. I gave them 2 stars not 1 star because the plumber seems nice so I guess it's their company policy to rip off customer. I was going to ask them to install another tank for my investment property now I don't think it will happen. Won't do any business with them again!
