After exhausting and many frustrated interviews trying to find a GC to tear down our old garage and build a new Coach House and garage, we finally hired MK Construction. Yet we were not sure how the experience would be but I am happy to share we had a wonderful experience that exceeded our expectations. The Project Manager We worked with Greg S. who has been very responsive since day 1, via text, phone, email and in person meetings, as needed. Constantly updating us. Workers and Partners Very professional team. Excavation, electrical, cement, hydraulic, carpenter, installations and others. They are all very knowledgeable, respectful, polite, and focused on what they were doing. They were working constantly even on snowy days and unbearable low temperatures. Budget It was top-notch. MK has met timeline and budget with fair pricing on any extras, which is extremely rare in constructions. Materials. High quality materials, and I could choose what I wanted as brands and models for siding and interior finishing. I am still and denial my project went so well. Update Nov 2021, over a year after the projects were finished and we're still very pleased with the quality of the work. Our architect recommended and specified a fair amount of detail that MK did very well. Work included adding new bathroom, relocating and rebuilding the kitchen, adding new windows, new electrical, water and ductwork, structural including steel and LVL beams, new columns and joist reinforcements, a 2-car garage, a second bathroom remodel, floor and wall tile work, electrical, new flooring... whew I can't write it all. I have done two major renovations with MK, the first was my kitchen a few years ago, the project went really well and we were happy with the quality of the work and the way we were treated. Fast forward to this summer, we hire MK again for a bathroom renovation. I will post some photos to verify what I am saying here, because it's almost unbelievable that an experienced construction company would be so careless and disrespectful of someone's home. First of all, the project started off and we had a great project manager. He left about two weeks into the project and was very tight lipped about why he was leaving but we got the impression there was something he didn't like about the way business was being done at MK. We were then given a new project manager who didn't have time to manage the project. Things went reallllly downhill from here. He was rarely on-site, instead we had an endless flow of subs in and out of our house, requiring a ton of management from my husband and myself (while we were trying to do our own jobs from home), it started to effect my ability to do my job when I had to drop off of meetings with my own clients to let people into my house on days or at times when we weren't expecting anyone and had received no communication about it. One Saturday morning we were expecting work to start around 10am. At 7 in the morning our dogs started going nuts, turns out this sub had turned up and let himself into our house HOURS before he was due to be there. I woke up and thought we were being robbed. We had a different company, a small carpentry business, building a custom storage wall and vanity for the bathroom. I found out half way through installation from the owner of that business that some of MK's subs were saying racist, awful things about the carpentry guys, so much so they were uncomfortable being in the house at the same time as these subs. None of the subs ever wore shoe covers, or cleaned up after themselves. Even after our designer made it very clear that expensive stone materials were being brought in and they needed to be very careful. The piece I am the most upset about, other than the racism which is just shocking, is the painting portion of the project. I am not exaggerating when I say this, there is paint ALL OVER every surface of this bathroom. The white sink, toilet and bath are covered in dark green paint splatter, as are the white tiles and floor. It's been weeks and I spend about an hour every weekend with a bottle of nail polish remover trying to get paint off. They didn't use a single drop cloth. The sink, the bath, nothing was covered when they were painting. They even used my new white sink to WASH THEIR PAINT BRUSHES and then did not clean it up. On top of that, we had to hire a different painter to re-do and touch up everything the MK subs did because not only did they get paint everywhere, the job itself was of such poor quality we didn't trust or want them to fix it. Then, they send a cleaner over, she was at my house maybe a half hour, didn't clean anything, and then they tried to charge me for an entire house cleaning. This woman did not leave the bathroom, and didn't even clean in there. They also tried to charge me a 20% markup on the stone, so watch out for stuff like that if you do ever hire them. Also, demo started on July 27th. It's now December and it JUST wrapped up. Every single person I have had come in to fix MK's work (painters, plumbers, general handy-men) have been utterly shocked at the poor quality of work. I will never use them again, I will make sure none of my friends ever use them, our designer will not work with them again, and I hope that anyone who reads this won't either. read more

I had them complete a two to one garage door conversion which included addition of an LVL beam and finish work. Over the course of a few weeks they timely and professionally completed the work and we are extremely happy with the result. Only minor finish work was required, but it was well done and I can't recommend them enough. Thanks again, especially to Greg. read more

Avoid. Hired MK to refinish a wood floor. Two rooms needed new oak flooring installed. Marcin subbed out the refinishing work. The refinishers missed their appmt, and delayed the job a few days. Instead of finishing up before the weekend, the job now stretched into a busy week for me - with the finish work scheduled to be done when I was unavailable. Not ideal - but timing issues happen. After the initial sand, I asked the Marcin to have the floor guys fill gaps in the boards with filler. A standard step with an older floor. The guys start hemming/hawing - literally begin yelling in house. I tell them to do it. I leave - needing to get back to to meetings. Instruct them to use a natural matte finish - just a couple coats of poly - our preference for the floor finish. Again - screaming. Begging to use a dark colored stain. I tell them it's not what I want. Please finish with matte poly. Within the afternoon. They've now used wood filler (without enough time to dry), and a two coats of poly (first coat drying for a couple hours max). The first issue with the job, is that when Marcin returned to install the trim - he rushed the job and sank (I later found out as I had to pull up all the trim to find the issue) five nails into the speaker wire that was running under the baseboard. He was well aware of the wire - just didn't take any precautions. When I hooked my stereo up, it shorted and blew my receiver. Then, after a week, the floor starts delaminating - especially at the joints of the boards. You can feel that wood filler has expanded (as it has now fully dried) and there's a ridge in between boards. Clearly, this is causing delamination. I now what poly flaking off my floor on 40+ % of it. I asked Marcin for some refund or to have the work fixed. He has refused. Saying that the contractors that he hired refused. I said that the checks went to MK Construction, to him. He's responsible for his subs and the overall work of the project. He didn't agree. Despite constant communication efforts over the last few months, there is no solution. At the time of this review, I haven't heard from him in weeks and assume their will be no attempt to make this right for us. I wouldn't want to work with anyone who doesn't take responsibility for their work. Both his work (careless work with our trim), and his subs work was sub par, rushed, and when issues arose - they were not handled responsibly. The only good thing about this is it was a relatively small job. If you have a large job, please beware. My experience has lead me to believe he is not to be trusted. read more

Great experience overall with MK. I received a call back right way regarding the type of work I was interested in and was put in touch with Manny, who reached out right away and was over to take a look at the job immediately. This was a smallish carpentry job on the front porch of my home, and Manny was able to fit the job in the next day. He was completely upfront about the cost, and was able to quote me on the material cost down to the dollar. Manny and his partner worked swiftly and efficiently and got the job done. DO NOT hire. Their team was never on the same page with each other, and it took forever for them to wrap up the project at the end. Terrible experience, especially for the price tag. Here are a few examples of the poor experience... -I was told that getting a dual zoned AC unit would make my bottom floor warmer, and it didn't, so I lost $3,000. They ended up putting in a baseboard radiator to solve the issue, which was $600, and they tried charging me for both. -My stuff from storage was supposed to be delivered on a Monday, and the carpet hadn't even been ordered the Friday before. They told me it was my fault because I never told them to order the carpet, which obviously wasn't my job. -They wanted to charge me $900 to install appliances when it was $120 for Abt Appliances to do it, and then, they were rude when I had Abt do it. -I was told that everything was ready for the appliances/countertops to be installed, but there was no water hookup and the cabinets weren't installed. I had to reschedule the appliances/countertops FOUR times because they kept pushing out the timeline. Yes, four. No exaggeration. -My kitchen cabinet shelves still fall about once a week- I finally started to super glue them because one fell on my daughters head. -They didn't include standard costs in the estimate (ex. disposal). *The above comments represent my opinions* read more

We are so happy with the end result of our custom home build that almost 2 years later we still receive compliments when we have new guests over. Tom was a great project manager and guided us, step by step, through this once in a life time event with expertise and precison. From design, to permits, to demolition, to build out, to clean up, MK Construction was professional the entire way. MK Construction just finished adding a master bathroom to our house. We are completely satisfied with their work. Our 1907 Oak Park home lacked a master bathroom, so we decided to convert a small guest bedroom adjacent to the master bedroom. The job was a complicated by the fact that directly below the new master bath is the recently renovated kitchen which meant that there was no easy route for the new plumbing and electrical service. Once the project was underway, workers were always present, sometimes 6 days per week. I mention this because that reflects very well on project foreman Marek who is a total professional at scheduling his subcontractors. No wasted time means that our project finished as quickly as possible. Some previous contractors with whom we have worked always seemed to leave a handful of tasks unfinished at the end, as if we would enjoy doing those. MK took our punch list and finished every last detail, no matter how small, until we were satisfied. Marek collaborated very well with our bathroom designer Pamela Polvere, and also offered his own excellent suggestions on several details that made for a beautiful finished product. The final price was right on budget. We paid more for a few upgrades that we chose after the job started, but we were thrilled that there were no surprises compared to MK's initial proposal. That's a first for us compared to other contractors! For future projects, we will contact MK Construction! Most highly recommended. read more

I really don't know where to begin. The process of buying a home is stressful. It's difficult. If you want to avoid that work with MK Construction. We were able to get with them on ground level and they catered to our every request with reasonable prices and high end quality. Circumstances have required us to move back to Michigan, but if we ever return I will call Marcin and his team to deliver us an unparalleled product. This review does not speak to the work of this company, but to the service. Based off of their website it appears they do great work! My family is looking to hire a company to do a total renovation on our house and MK constructions seemed like they might be a great option. After calling on a Friday, they said they would give us a call back the next week to set up an appointment, which we understood. I'm sure Friday afternoons can be hectic. However, the call never came and after we called again with no answer we gave up. I guess it's back to finding a new company that actually wants the business. read more

They give all kinds of lip service when confronted with problems but are completely unprofessional and have no intentions on making things right. I purchased a bungalow full rehab from MK Construction in 2015. I had very minimal/typical punch list issues with one electrical socket needing repair. They answered any questions, concerns immediately during the warranty period and came within a day, and still respond immediately 3 years later on roof warranty questions. The detailed review saying the complete opposite spurred me to submit this review. Marcin actually came out twice himself because his roofing contractor doesn't deem it necessary to answer phone on warranty concerns. Aminor drywall water issue in 2nd fl bathroom appeared about a year later. The roofer wouldn't respond, so MK got him to respond. When he finally showed, he refused to go on the roof and said it wasn't his issue. (It turned out to be a bad seal on the toilet stack on the roof, his responsibility to fix.) I repaired the wall, had HVAC and plumbing look at it, and they said it was probably the toilet stack seal. So Marcin sent someone who went on roof to repair, and then PAID FOR MY DRYWALL REPAIR even though it was after the warranty period and obviously was from the original roofing subcontractor. So this week a shingle slid off. Marcin came and repaired it himself and checked roof section to assure it doesn't happen again.It is hard to believe, but the repair was done in 2 days 3 years after buying home. This 3 year service level is so rare that the negative/non-responsive review just defies reality, so I had to respond. It looks like MK tried to respond and rectify with no response, so that is very odd for someone with every possible issue. read more

MK Construction built a series of homes on a lot next to ours, so I am speaking as a neighbor of one of their projects, not a client. They were very understanding and responsive to the inevitable issues that arise next to a building site. Tom was courteous, understanding and took immediate action. Beyond these few issues, they maintained a clean construction site and had courteous contractors. If they take good care of their neighbors, they will probably take good care of their clients. MK was recommended to us by our architect. They did good work and stayed on schedule, even when we had a significant change order halfway through the process. They were also very sensitive to our budget and made useful suggestions on where to save and where not to. Also, they were very responsive--several months after construction was complete and paid for, we noticed a sewer gas smell. I called MK about it and Marek came out to our place the next day to check up on it, even though we didn't owe him any more money. (The smell ended up being unrelated to MK's work.) I'm kind of a pain in the ass and Greg was bomb.com at putting up with me. We had a large number of projects going on at the house... ripping out and back-filling a front patio, concrete pour for new window wells, new carpet, installing wallpaper, decorative mouldings, painting (walls and cabinetry), new water line... you get the idea. Greg was always friendly, accommodating, and most importantly responsive. His teams did great work (and in one instance redid something at their own expense when the quality wasn't quite where we all wanted it to be) and were always clean and courteous. His group was fixing some issues that were created by the prior owner (developer) and a different construction group, who failed to get the necessary permits and city sign-offs (including Landmarks). Never fun cleaning up someone else's mess, but I trust Greg and the work of his team. I would definitely hire him again. read more

They worked through every issue and used their experience and resources to resolve every issue that arose. They completed the job on time and within budget and we are very happy with the end result.
