When we first started shopping around for a small kitchen project, we weren't sure who to work with. It was our first home renovation project, and we did not know how to go about the process. We first went to a big chain hardware store to get some guidance, but found them to be unclear and Not personable. But then we luckily found Habitar Design and Strategem Construction, and the difference was like night and day! From the very beginning, Mitch and the Habitar's team really took the time to listen to us, and made us feel heard and understood. We actually began our project way back in January, but when the pandemic began, our plans were understandably put on hold. However, Habitar was just stellar at communication overall - especially during the early months of the pandemic, when everything was so confusing for all of us. We never felt out of the loop with Habitar. The design process was thorough, and they explained everything in as much detail as we cared to hear. We fully understood the cost of all of our options, and so we didn't have any nasty surprises at the end. It was really nice to not worry about potential cost overruns through the job. We explained to them that we wanted to try and stick to our estimated cost as closely as possible in order to stick to our budget. However, like with any project, things happen, and sometimes the estimate is exactly that....an estimate! After expressing our concerns, and knowing that we were on a budget, Mitch and his team intervened to make sure that we all arrived to an agreeable situation. The Strategem construction team was professional, courteous, and respectful in every interaction we had. And while they were working in our home, we didn't even feel inconvenienced - they made as minimal an intrusion as possible. Any problems that came up were quickly resolved, and the whole team worked to find solutions. The whole process felt extremely personal - the owner, Mitch, even came out to see the job, and left us a small gift as a thank-you for our business! We would whole-heartedly recommend Habitar and Strategem to anyone who needs renovation work. My wife and I purchased a brand new condo in 2018. Though the layout was perfect, the sterile walls were a blank canvas waiting for an artist. We found that artist with MacKenzie at Habitar. The impetus for our whole-house project began with the fact that the original wall paint was not only drab, but held onto every scuff, scrape, and wipe. Once MacKenzie showed us some paint colors (utilizing obviously higher quality paint than what was already on the wall), she asked if there was anything else we were interested in. The fireplace! I worked with Habitar Design (as well as their sister construction company Stratagem) to update a wall mounted fireplace to become a flush mounted fireplace along with a custom mantle. I also wanted to update our family room's TV wall to include cabinetry, lighting and shelving. Heather was my designer and she did a wonderful job. I had a really bad experience dealing with Habitar Design and was super disappointed with our home remodeling. I felt that my money was wasted, and if you can, stay away from them! Here's my experience: I contacted Habitar design early enough in order to be able to finish the project before a certain deadline. The designer (her name is MacKenzie) canceled our meeting several times due to personal reasons, which caused the project to start late. In addition, we were promised by the designer that we can have all the changes we want before the desired deadline we specified very early in the process, but the owner ended up telling me that it was impossible to finish everything by that deadline. Frustrated by the miscommunication, we still agreed to cut back some of the projects and work on the absolute important items: install hardwood floor, floor heating and install new windows. We then went on vacation, and hoped that things can be finished before we came back. The project got delayed one more time, and we were told that they won't be able to install the floor heating before we came back (again, they promised everything will be finished!). At this point, it is too late to change to a different contractor. We really want the construction to be done before we came back (we have a six months old baby, and live in a construction zone will be absolute hell to us and the baby). We ended up never getting the floor heating, but two loud fan heater on the floor. The room was originally planned to be the nursery. Without the heater but the loud fan, my daughter is either freezing in winter, or sleepless because of the loud noise coming from the fan. The room is completely useless now, and we spent more than 60K on this!! A huge waste of money!!! Do not use them if you can! If you still want to take the risk, add a contingency clause in the contract: penalty should be applied if project is delayed. Good luck! read more

We worked with Habitar / Stratagem on our kitchen remodel, and we are delighted with the design and construction results. Hannah at Habitar was our designer and she did a fantastic job of listening to our initial ideas and assessing our space, and then designed a space that exceeded our expectations in both function and aesthetics. Hannah figured out how to take our fairly small kitchen and create much more space within the footprint, and also turn an overly large adjacent bathroom into a powder room, leaving room for a separate walk-in pantry. Hannah also had really great ideas for finishes and materials. We really love the results. Zane was our construction manager at Stratagem, and he did an amazing job at keeping us informed at all stages of the work and also making great suggestions along the way (undercabinetry lighting and millwork panels for the refrigerator, to name a few), and he caught many things that could have gone wrong in a very old and unpredictable house like ours. We felt complete confidence in the project at all times because it was in such good hands. And the carpenters who not only did amazing work but stayed late the last several days so that it would be finished before the holidays deserve huge kudos. I was given the opportunity to work with Habitar Design specifically working closely with Mitch Newman and designer Hannah Tindall. My boyfriend and I had just moved into a stunning downtown condo where we were excited to make it our own in terms of design, constructing modern built ins in the family room/living room, adding custom cabinets to our existing kitchen, new hardwood floors, updating two bathrooms and desired a new design layout. And let me say in all honesty, we are excessively demanding with details and obsessive with mundane details....and yet Habitar Design still exceeded our expectations! With many downtown condos, our space was small, but Mitch Newman and his design team allowed us to capture the feeling of "home" and express our taste in our new place. We were immediately drawn to Mitch Newman's attention to detail, level of professionalism, brilliant visionary work, and his craftsmanship is truly an artist's work. His background as a physician demonstrates a level of commitment and knowledge, and all his life experiences really allow him to be magnificent in his craft. I cannot stress enough, the level of quality in his craftsmanship---gorgeous, it was beyond beautiful and better than I had imagined! Our friends & family had no idea we had customized and designed our own built-ins with Mitch, they truly thought we had ordered them from one of the high end Italian stores in Chicago. I used Habitar Design to help with decorating my new home. I already had most of the "big pieces" of furniture but needed help with accents, seating and colors to bring it all together. I worked with Hannah on 2 projects and she was amazing. I had a boring fireplace wall that they tiled and later came back and painted. The design guidance was great and I was provided as little or as much feedback as I needed in pulling the project details together. Utilizing Habitar flowed seamlessly into my engagement with Stratagem Construction. Pricing was very transparent and all questions were promptly responded to Construction work didn't begin until all materials were secured - it made for short duration project which was great Throughout the project the worksite was well maintained - they didn't leave materials all over and respected my home Once the work was completed I was encouraged to keep punch list of items that required more work. There were very few, and all were addressed promptly. My one critique was that my start date was delayed a bit. I should have expected that but it was still frustrating. However, communication with Stratagem during the delay was good and they did a solid job explaining the delay and managing my expectations. read more

Having never worked with an interior designer before I really didn't know what to expect. Now that I've worked with Karl Sponholtz of Habitar Design I know what I've been missing. I contacted Habitar after finding them on the web and Karl called me back within a few hours. He was so friendly and his personality so engaging I went from skeptic to excited while explaining what I thougth the project was on the phone. Once I met him, Karl really helped me focus and brought up ideas and information I would never have thought of. My kicthen is small and my bathrooms were very outdated. Karl walked in and within 3 hours we had a high level plan to work from. He was not only creative but also very technically savvy. It turns out Karl is also an architect so he brings more than your average designer to the table. Because I wanted to open the kitchen up and make it bigger he was the perfect fit for my job. My kitchen is incredible and my bathroom is like a spa. Even in this economy I know I've added value to the overall to my condo price. Kapan, a senior designer at Habitar, also helped us select paint colors for the entire house, carpet samples, tiles for mudroom, drapery for kitchen and living room, discussed about furniture layout, gave us ideas about space usage. Kapan was very professional, experienced, personable, and easy to work with. First we had a 4 hour meeting, which was highly productive. She was very conscious of our budget. My husband and I have hard time in agreeing on any design choices for the house but she managed to find solutions that fit both of us. She acquainted us of several time saving web sources for drapes, light fixtures, and tiles. The results are great and we hear a lot of compliments from friends. We highly recommend Habitar and will continue using their services for years to come. Their sister company Stratagem also did some crown molding installation, window frame repair, french door frame repair, carpet installation, miscellaneous repair, mudroom tile installation. Mitch, principal at Stratagem, is very professional and knowledgeable. We are very happy to finally have found a contractor we can trust. It was hard to find a reliable contractor to get the crown molding done because the profile was hard to match and the ceiling had parts with very high ceiling (21 feet). Their price was very competitive and the craftsmanship was excellent. The fireplace and bookcase look like taken from a design magazine. Chris is a great carpenter and very resourceful. He was able to fix our french doors that other contractors recommended us to replace. The carpet installation was smooth and the pricing was very competitive, with sizable savings relative to Home Depot. We highly recommend Stratagem for any home improvement or building projects. I was very pleased with the design and contracting/outcome of the piece, and although there were some hiccups along the way (note: I have never NOT observed hiccups on any construction project), they were handled smoothly and professionally. I am utilizing them again on a few additional projects (a small bar and an updated laundry room). I recently worked with Habitar Design and Stratagem Construction. This review is for Habitar Design. I will review Stratagem once they are done with our place. Kapan is the designer for Habitar Design. I was timid about having her come over as I thought interior designers were only for high end condos/houses with a large budget. Boy, did she make me comfortable (made me want to befriend her right away). She is enthusiastic, sweet, and easy to work with. She listened & understood our style and budget right away. She helped me with various items. Most notably, she helped pick our paint colors and tile & tile layout for our bathrooms. I had been researching and looking for paint colors and tiles for months. I hadn't come close to finding anything I liked. Within 1 - 1.5 hours of Kapan's arrival, we had picked out paint colors for all the rooms of the condo and even the tile for the bathrooms. I also had her walk through our condo to ask her for her advice on furniture layout/color schemes/types of furniture pieces that would better suit our taste next time we are looking, etc. She was great about providing us with cheaper alternatives to stay within our budget without compromising "the look." I think having a designer can really save you money & time. Overall, I would recommend her to anyone/everyone. I am thinking of having her back at our place to help us hang our art/pictures/decorate. read more

I have worked with Habitar (design) / Stratagem (construction) twice. The first project involved turning an office into a baby's bedroom and the second involved adding a bathroom and moving / remodeling a laundry room. On the design side we worked with Kapan both times. She came up with a great design for my son's room and I am very happy with the colors - not too "cute" so he won't outgrow it quickly. On the bathroom we had limited space but wanted to have a full bathtub so my son can take baths. Again the design was great and Kapan incorporated a wall mounted toilet to save space - a perfect choice. On the construction side we worked with two of Mitch's GCs (Mitch owns the company). I was very happy with the quality of work and the speed. They were there to get things done and the project did not drag on as I have experienced with other builders. The quality of work was great. A final note on pricing - they are very transparent which I really appreciate after having dealt with other builders. On the design side they charge by the hour and on the construction side they price the whole project with different options that can be added / dropped to manage costs (ex would be built in lighting for a cabinet vs no lighting). One could use just the design side or the construction side if desired. I will definitely contact them when we embark on our next project. read more

So far I have given my deposit and we are in the design and planning stages to the new condo that I purchased. I think it is critical to use a design service for furniture selection and placement as I find it so easy to get things that are too large for the room space. I am working with Hannah who seems to be good at reigning in my ideas to something more realistic. This process is expensive as you are charged for phone contact and email contact with the designer, in addition to travel time to stores and the project site. These expenses can eat up your retainer fairly quickly at $150.00 per hour. I find that I am always mindful not to make contact without considering the cost. I will have some minor construction done as well. Construction will be with a separate company with supervision by Habitar. My advice have plenty of money on hand to begin this process. Invoices must be paid within ten days and a significant retainer is required up front to get started. read more

I had a wonderful experience with Habitar Design. I've never worked with an interior decorator or designer before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. When I moved to Chicago a few months ago, I was starting from scratch. I had moved into a high rise, and I didn't have any furniture yet. I also had a weird space to work with, as far as room layouts go. Kapan (one of their Designers) helped me out TREMENDOUSLY. She gave me great ideas on different layouts and my furniture options, and never "forced" me to buy anything specific...she gave me guidelines of what to look for, and where to go, and I picked out items based on my own taste after receiving creative input from her. The cost was great as well...which was one of the reasons I choose Habitar in the first place. There were times we went over our scheduled time a bit, and I wasn't charged anything extra...Kapan really helped me stay within my budget. I liked her so much I even referred her to my mom, who used one of Habitar's 4-hour design sessions to redecorate a few rooms in her house. My mom loved her as well, and the work they did looks great. I love my apartment now, and I always get great compliments. Another one of my friends recently bought a condo and wants to use Kapan now that he saw what she did with my place :) All in all, working with Habitar Design and Kapan was a wonderful experience and I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat (and I obviously have already). From my first email interaction with the owner Mitch, I knew that we were in good hands. The quote he gave us was very detailed and within our budget. Even though a kitchen island is a pretty small job, we never felt like it was not important to them. Our designer Hannah was so sweet, and designed the perfect addition to our space. Zane, the project manager was the best -- very professional and responsive, and he kept us updated at every step.
