So I have been here twice in the last three months. The first time I needed a new delrailer that the big outdoor store where I purchased the bike failed to fix (twice). I also had my back tire replaced. I met with Ryan who stated they did not have the part but would get back to me as soon as possible. I had my bike back within a week with the new derailer and tire working perfectly. Two days ago I brought my bike in to replace a wobbly tire. I explained that I had not hit potholes and I didn't see any broken spokes. They said they would take a look at it, and see if they could fix it if not they would let me know what other solutions were available. I picked the bike up today (it was ready the same day!!!) pleasantly surprised they were able to fix the wheel (broken spoke after all) instead of having to get a new wheel. I love the honesty and not being taken advantage. During the two times I have visited the MJ's I found all the staff very professional and helpful. They took the time to explain the situation in detail. I will be going back! read more

So glad I found these guys and they were able to provide a used Shimano 105 shifter for my bike. I learned that Shimano no longer makes that shifter and I was looking at an expensive repair if not for them. They were able to replace the shifter without having to replace my relatively new handlebar wrapping and were able to perform the repair in less than the two weeks they estimated. Absolutely amazing! Where do I start? Scott the owner has gone above and beyond for me time and time again. For example, I brought in my bike that I thought the carbon was compromised on. Scott took my bike in immediately, helped me through the process, and spent a considerable amount of time on the phone with Argon helping me navigate the company! He even called the shop where I bought my bike to see what they could do! He truly just wanted to help - amazing! Just recently after buying a new bike I couldn't figure out my shifters. Scott spent over an hour on it and finally figured out the problem! I can't recommend this shop more. I trust this shop with whatever bike I have; road, commuter, mountain, and TT bike! read more

Just picked up a vintage bike and the rear wheel had loose, rusted spokes that snapped when I tried to tighten them. I brought the wheel in and the people at MJ's were understanding and compassionate that I wanted to reuse the old wheel but did the right thing and convinced me to purchase a new rear wheel because the old one was warped and had a flat spot. Very professional and they were able to have the new wheel ready for me (all balanced and freshly greased up!) within a couple hours. Very competitive pricing too. They've got a great selection of bike tools and gear, and were even willing to order a specialty tool for me that they don't keep in stock. So glad I decided to support a local business, this will be the first place I look whenever I need something bike related. read more

GO HERE FOR ANYTHING! In the process of moving here I bought some (3 so far) bikes used and have been bringing them in. All the guys at this shop know their stuff, are super helpful, friendly and honest and they don't price gouge you! They can check out a bike in a few minutes and give you a pretty accurate assessment of what's needed now and what might be needed in the future. Lots of other shops try to get you to do everything right away and more just to drive up the ticket but not MJs! You have earned a loyal customer here :) read more

We bought helmets for about $40 each, when they were $15 for very similar ones at costco (our fault for not doing research). Had THE BEST experience here yesterday. Received exemplary service from a trio of friendly bike experts: Scott, Jacob, and "Jessie" (subbing for therealJessie who was out of town). Brought in a bike my sister had left behind while she is traveling in New Zealand, needing to get regular pedals put on it instead of clip pedals. I am not a rider by any means, but the bike was there in dad's garage, and I wanted to make use of it. Scott got us all set with some great bright green pedals, helped me figure out if the size was right (taught me how to properly stand over a bike), and even tilted up the handlebars a bit. We were in and out well within the 46 minutes that had come free on the meter. Thank you world! The best part was that while we there, "Jessie" made a suggestion of putting on brakes in the top middle of the handlebar. I said I wanted to see if I could even ride the thing yet. We took it to Lake Murray, and as I was going around, sure enough, I thought man, it would be good to have some brakes up top here. Also, as we were finishing up Scott mentioned that we would need to replace the wraps on the handlebars. Sure enough they unraveled as I was going around the lake. In my mind, MJ's Cyclery knows what they are talking about. Definitely left the shop with as Scott said, "a happy bike" and a happy newbie rider. He researched a replacement OEM component but it was not available. He was able to suggest a reasonably priced crank set upgrade and ordered the components upon my approval. I stopped by the store last week on a whim because I needed new bike shoes. I called before I came in and right away I could sense that this place loves what they do. I worked with Jessica the first time. She helped me pick my shoes and was friendly and knowledgeable. There was no upsell of anything, just genuinely helping me what with I needed at the time. She told me that I could bring my shoes and bike in when I got my new pedals and they'd install them for free. She warned me that installing the pedals correctly mattered so I don't ruin my gears. Great advice coz my dad had planned on doing it for me and he's never done it before. When I brought my bike in yesterday, Scott was in and did the installing. Again, personable and helpful. They put me on the trainer to make sure I knew how to clip in/out comfortably. Painless process. This is a shop that cares about their community. I've had a lot of bad ideas. Let's turn the treadmill on high and sit down on it! Let's buy a scooter although I have zero balance or skills! Thankfully, coming to MJ's was one of the rare great ideas. Everyone here is super nice, accommodating and knowledgable. I wanted this particular helmet as it was the cutest one, but they were out in my size. So the lady working with me called every single store she thought might have it for me! One of those things that they offer, but I wouldn't ask for it as we are all capable of dialing on our own phones, yes? In the end, I found a helmet that fit and was a little more expensive than the first one I was looking at. But it's white, so hopefully it will stand out at night. Which is when I plan to use this scooter. It's a smaller shop but they have a little bit of everything. I would make this your first stop for all your biking (or scooting) needs. Oh, and they have complimentary water from The Water Lady which is another one of my favorite places! read more

Looking in through the plate glass window you can always see people scattered about; even congregating next to each other at the busiest times, with their faces lit up from the business side of an iridescent computer; or fumbling about with the latest mechanism. I heard about this cool coffee shop and decided to check it out. There are random products scattered around the counter from horrible looking cookies under scrunched layers of plastic film, to bagged chips and candies. Why would you display bike parts next to your bundt cake? It's a weird theme for a coffee shop. You feel like you're waiting in line at an independent gas station. The walls are lined with those small items we all need, but don't want at the time. You have to wade past a sea of bicycles to get to the counter. The music blaring forth is usually loud and uninspiring. The coffee, I hear is mediocre at best. Sure they have an unusual array of portable stoves to cook in - I think that's their catch - and an impressive espresso machine loitering about. However, I never quite make it to the coffee when I go in here. This is not your typical coffee shop. I'd say these guys are better at turning wrenches. Which is what they do really well. This place is what the trendy hipsters in San Francisco wish they could be. Funky odd building, funky furniture, very friendly and knowledgeable staff, and the guy wrenching on the bikes may have made himself a Frankenbike at one point in his life. As for the wrenching, this is one of the best shops I've ever been to. They care about you and your safety and will outright fix your shit the right way. I'm a very knowledgeable cyclist for sure, but I'm no expert and can't go on and on about the "well balanced and trued wheel" or can't tell you about the finer differences between the feel of a Shimano 105 and Ultegra group set, or crap like that. However, what I am qualified to say is MJ's is a shop that I would drive across town to, if I wasn't close enough to cycle to. Jessie and Scott operate a damn respectable business and I recommend them to everyone I know in the area. read more

Came in for a brake adjust. The mechanic was quite knowledgeable and his service was great! If you're in hillcrest or university heights this should be your LBS. Can't recommend them highly enough. The store caters mainly to the commuter crowd, but all you mountain bikers come here anyway. The mechanics all ride. They have a great selection of accessories and bike parts. Parking isn't awesome, so ride your bike here. If your bike is broken, walk here. Just come to this shop. read more

I cannot recommend MJ's enough! During lockdown, I brought in 6 different bikes in varying stages of disrepair. Each time I went in, Scott and his staff were a delight to work with and the turnaround time was extremely fast. The bike shop was super busy, but Scott usually had the bikes back to me within a week. One bike he kept for me in his shop while he waited a few months to find the perfect piece for it. I brought my bike here after another local bike shop totally hosed it. MJ's fixed my bike; and it now rides as good as it did 25 years ago when I first purchased it. I brought my bike in with a flat. They fixed the flat immediately for $7 parts and $10 labor. For that $10 labor, the installed my new tire tube; but the also cleaned and lubed the chain, fixed a loose spoke, took off some old accessories, and gave my bike a good "once-over." They always impress me with their service. read more

Staff: Everyone is friendly and the staff often troubleshoots things on the spot even if I'm expecting to leave it overnight since I've walked in close to closing time. Service: I've had them change out my tires, service my internal gear hub, replace brake pads (disc brakes), and other maintenance and it's always been top-notch. Never had to go back for them to do it over. Cost: I'm pretty sure they're undercharging me, but they're competitive with their service pricing. read more

Went in with my mostly assembled bike that I had shipped over from an overseas trip and they helped me get it back together right and double checked everything was good to go. Grabbed some tire caps, a bottle holder, and bottle in addition to the small amount of labor. I can't remember ever being so satisfied and in a good mood after leaving any other kind of store that provides mechanical services.
