if I could give zero stars I would... I brought in my grandfather's pocket watch which was over 100 years old. The day I came to drop it off I asked to see inside the pocket watch. It was gleaming gold and beautiful. Asked for them to clean it up and do any repairs necessary. 3 1/2 months later after calling and calling, they told me it was ready. I asked to see inside again and it was a dull chrome color. I was charged almost $300 for the service. They had completely gutted and taken out the and replaced it with garbage parts. They said it loses about 10 minutes a day. Do not take your vintage time pieces to this location. I had an heirloom pocket watch and they stole what was inside and replaced it with crap. I brought a fully functioning vintage Longines dress watch to MJ Watch Service because I wanted to do the right thing and get it cleaned and oiled for long term care. The watch was running fine. Keeping time. No issues. After three months of calling and stopping in and getting a different story every time, I finally decided to pick it up because I was getting nowhere. Let me elaborate on how they acted during the three months. I called several times and visited the shop more than twice, and each time I heard a new explanation about what was supposedly wrong. First it was a broken balance jewel. Then they were still searching for a part. Then it just needed more time. The story shifted every visit, and no one ever gave me a straight answer. It became obvious there was a problem and I needed to rescue my watch, it was never going to get fixed by this shop. I took the watch to a reputable watchmaker, who I should have visited in the first place. I'm the fool who was looking to save a few dollars on a basic service, hard lesson to learn. The second watchmaker opened it in front of me. It was obvious upon opening, the case had been damaged in a way that blocked the rotor from turning, a quick discovery of why my formally working watch no longer was running. It gets better, several movement screws were missing that hold the movement to the dial. And, the wax that should have been in place on the screws wasn't there. The watch was not damaged and the screws properly secured when I brought it in. Parts don't just disappear. Cases don't damage themselves. And a watch that went in working shouldn't come back dead. So here are the things anyone reading this should think about. How does a watch that goes in running come back nonfunctional. Why were key screws missing. Why was the case damaged. And why was I given a different explanation every time I checked in. This experience cost me a working watch and forced me to pay a real specialist to correct everything that went wrong under MJ's "care." Based on what I saw and what the second watchmaker pointed out, I can't recommend MJ Watch Service for any vintage work, not even for a simple service. If you love your watch, there are superior options. read more

I hate to leave bad reviews for businesses but I feel I have to warn other collectors. I have been collecting vintage Rolex, Omega, Heuer and others for nearly 20 years. MJ was recommended by a fellow collector on a forum after my longtime watchmaker passed away. I brought a Heuer 2446 in because the chrono wasnt resetting properly. They gave me a quote and I thought it was high. No harm, no foul. I picked the watch up and when I got home, I took it out of the bag and the caseback fell off. This is a compression case and the caseback snaps on. They didnt bother to put the caseback on correctly after looking at the watch. The final straw came when I brought a brand new Tudor Black Bay 58 to them. I had bought a Ranger bracelet and wanted to bracelet changed. I didnt have a set of Bergeon spring bar tools that all modern Rolex and Tudor need. Any competent watchmaker should have this tool to properly remove a Rolex/Tudor bracelet. I explained that I didnt have the proper tool and just needed the new bracelet put on. Much to my dismay, I saw one of their watchmakers hacking away at my watch with the incorrect tool. Demanded my watch back and the butcher job can be seen in the photos. This was a stickered watch, bought a week prior. I asked what kind of bs operation didnt have the proper tools to deal with modern Rolex watches. They offered to polished the lugs; as if I'd let them touch any watch of mine. When I declined, they suggested I take it to Rolex. I did exactly that and 5 minutes later a watchmaker, with proper tools, had put the bracelet on. I'm sure these guys are fine for changing a battery on a Swatch. For anything else, go to the AD or find an independent who at least can show you they have big boy watchmaker tools. 1 star is generous. read more

I have never posted a bad review before, but my husband and I just had a very bad experience with MJ Watch Service on Waukegan Road; and while I'm sure that there are happy long-time clients, people should be careful to avoid what we experienced. We took in two watches to be repaired, including mending a chain on one wristwatch. After six weeks, we were nearby and went in to check on the status. They said that it would take a bit more time. About ten days later, one watch was repaired. We took the watch home, and when I took out the watch, the decorative gold chain to the Patek was missing, and in its place was a plain new chain which didn't appear to be gold (a subsequent watch repair shop told me that not only was it gold-filled, but it wasn't soldered, either). My husband checked two weeks later for his watch, and was told that it would be finished the following week. He went in on a Friday, and was told, since they couldn't find the watch, that it was with a person at home, but would be ready on Tuesday. We received a call on Monday afternoon confirming that. My husband went in and was given the watch; but then was asked if he wanted the watch to be repaired. I understand that things often take time, especially with the shortage of skilled employees now, but at least tell us that it would take a few months, replace a part with a part of equal value, solder where you are supposed to, and don't be passive aggressive about repairing a watch when you were asked to in the first place. Others may not have had this experience, but I would recommend asking lots of questions and being clear about what you expect replacements to be. read more

I'm a vintage watch collector, Rolex, Longines, IWC, Jaeger LeCoultre, Patek, Universal Geneve, etc. MJ Watch has overhauled my Longines 12.68z, Valjoux 72, and other vintage movements at very competitive prices. They also follow requests to a T, understanding that vintage collectors don't want dials restored or cases polished. Turnaround time is also great, 2-6 weeks (it can take others months to over a year to do an overhaul, esp if you send it to the original manufacturer). They've serviced several of my watches at this point and have never once disappointed. Some prior reviewer implied MJ watch somehow filled her watch with water which is absurd. If they can handle complex overhauls on vintage movements, they're not going to botch a simple battery change. It's pretty obvious she either left the crown open and let water in, or it wasn't a water resistant watch and she took it from a cold AC environment to a hot summer exterior and water condensation formed. I also take pictures (as they do also) prior to service and they have never scratched or damaged any of my watches, always comes back in original condition. This is a hard working crew who do a good job. I will continue to entrust my rare and complex movement overhauls and services to them. read more

Watch was a bit tight on wrist, returned three days later, link put back in... no charge. There are 6-8 guys in there repairing watches and clocks, much better service than my original place. Be careful with this operation -- keep all receipts of payments. I did not do this and today had to pay for a minor repair that I know I paid when I dropped my watch off two weeks ago. I paid cash at the time Today I had no way of proving that I paid and the interaction with the front office guy got a bit "testy". He won because of my inability to prior payment. I have been coming to this watch repair place to either change battery, routine cleaning, bracelet adjustments. I have a few watches, Michelle, Movado, Omega. The customer service was acceptable. 3 months ago I came in because my watches stopped working. 2 of the watches were fixed properly, the third one stopped working the next day and there were scratches in the back. The face of the watch had marks that were never there before and water. I didn't know what it is but I didn't want to go back there because I lost my trust. I went to another watch repair shop they opened the watch. I was told the watch is full of water and I will need complete service and it will cost me as much as the watch is worth. I needed to have the case on my Panerai watch polished but had read so many horror stories of watch repair places making the problem worse. I did some research and discovered MJ. They've done a lot of work on very high end watches like AP and Patek and they are very experienced. I took my watch in, showed the defect and 5 minutes later I had a watch that looked brand new. I chatted a bit about their business and their repair services seem to be top notch as well. All of my future watch needs will be done with these guys. They are very serious about their work and it shows. This isn't the kind of fancy high end place that will give you free tea and cookies, its just a no nonsense shop with an experienced staff that will take care of your watch. About a year ago I made the mistake of taking a watch to another local jewelry store to have the battery changed. After waiting two weeks to have it done, they ended up charging way more than promised. The story goes on: my watch wasn't properly sealed, causing moisture to form behind the crystal and the in workings to stop. Ouch! In need of help I took my watch to MJ. I live in Indiana and Googled watch repair. I found MJ Watch Service and checked Yelp and saw all the great reviews. Here is my situation: I have my father's Noblia watch that while not very expensive has a lot of sentimental value. It is gold-plated and is very worn and has not run in years. I wanted to get it refurbished to a like-new condition to present to my father. I sent 6-8 high resolution photos of the watch to MJ asking if they could "refurbish" the watch and whether the band (which is very worn) was salvageable. They sent me an e-mail response saying they should be able to refurbish it and I could mail it to them for a free estimate. Ultimately they responded saying that the band could not be re-plated and they offered to find a band that might match. Well, I Googled re-plating and there are a number of companies that offer this service. They then responded saying that the re-plating would not be of good quality and would not last. I said I had a specific place I wanted to send it to and to send it back. Then they offered to send it to that place for me, get it back, and then replace the crystal and battery and make sure it was all working. I said great and I sent them the info on how to get it re-plated (location in Canada). So I never heard anything. (This is going on two months of back and forth.) I finally call and ask them what happened and they said they did not want to send it to Canada and they were going to send it somewhere else that did good work. OK, would have been nice to run that by me but I just wanted it done at this point. Another few weeks go by and now they are no longer responding to my e-mails! I call and ask and end up speaking to the owner. He says re-plating can only be done at the factory and they won't send it anywhere. I ask them if they have done anything to my watch and he says no. I told him to send it back. He said, "You want me to send it back to you?" I said "Yes, just send it back." He responded, "Ok". *Click* Wow... Up to that point everyone had been polite on the phone. Difficult to understand but polite. I felt pretty good that they would actually send it back and they did. In fact they sent it Fed Ex with signature required and packaged quite nicely. Thank you for that at least... My ultimate issue is that I sent them high-res photos. They should have been able to determine that the band (and watch body for that matter) needed to be re-plated or replaced. If you don't re-plate and refuse to have it done then why waste three months of my time?! And if you aren't going to do it then why say that you would?! I can't deny that they have good reviews for walk-ins but I strongly suggest you not send any watch in for repair through the mail. And to be clear: they do NOT re-plate!!! read more

I took in a Rado watch to get an estimate on resealing it due to condensation & left it for an estimate. When I picked it up the silver anchor was missing. When I questioned them they said it was not there. This is not true, it was always there. The write up for my work order never stated that it was missing or needed to be replaced. They must have lost it or took it off to use it for another customer. I will never go back there again. read more
