Countless birthdays, prom night dinners, dinner when family is visiting, or just take out after a long work day--I go here whenever I have an excuse and have been for over a decade. Family owned and run with love. The freshest seafood prepared with care. Their menu is extensive, truly something for everyone. Their udon is killer, the richest broth and most tender meat. Miyuki is my favorite place to go for Japanese, especially sushi. However, my favorite item to order is their tonkatsu! It's perfectly breaded and the pork is moist. I've been going here since I moved to watsonville about 10 years ago and I am so appreciative of the fact that they are still open during the shelter in place order for take out. Recently ordered a bunch of veggie sushi and ice cream for dinner since my partner and I both were over cooking and hadn't ordered take out in a couple weeks. When you walk in and see that there are more JAPANESE customers than anyone else, that's usually a pretty good indication (to me anyway) that the food is authentic. Chief, the owner, is a sushi Master and has never let us down, taste or presentation-wise. The wait staff know regular customers by name. Parking is a bit tight out front and in the back but there's plenty of street parking. It is ALWAYS noisy since lots of neighborhood families go to Miyuki. The wine list sucks but the sake makes up for it. I like the mirrored disco ball hanging from the ceiling; the Asian "muzak" playing in the background is fun too. Today I dared follow the Yelp stars to Miyuki. Whenever I see great reviews for Japanese restaurants in small towns, I hold my breath. Often the American palate doesn't know the difference between authentic Japanese cuisine and Chinese pretenders unskillfully doling out saucy rolls for mass consumption. Miyuki would stand out for authentic Japanese quality if it were competing for Yelp stars in SF, Manhattan, or Hawaii. The high Yelp rating for Miyuki is SPOT ON. Miyuki seems to be a traditionally Japanese mom-n-pop operation, with the husband as itamae and the wife as server (I did not ask to confirm). Regardless, the food is perfectly simple, allowing the flavor of fresh fish to come forth. A chef needs fresh, very high quality fish to make this strategy work. The fish at Miyuki is up to the test. The chirashi had a good mix of fish and every bite was bursting with distinct flavor. My young son ordered the Dragon roll and offered me some. I dislike tempura mixed in sushi, and that was what was in the Dragon roll. Bam! The Dragon roll was delicate, with balance and original character. Bizarrely, the light tempura batter reminded me of Mexican cuisine, and the combination was very well done. It could be the best saucy roll I ever tried! I ordered takeout this week. Service was efficient and prompt. And yet... the rainbow roll I ordered was less than generous in the size of sushi layered on top of the roll - VERY disappointing. The seaweed salad was over spiced and too salty. I've eaten there in person a few times and was happy with everything. This time though... I'm choosing to not go back until life is "back to normal" hoping that their previously excellent food will also be "back to normal". I understand that we were the last ones but we were trying to finish our drinks after spending more than $250 when the busser/cook went outside the patio (where we were at) and said we were still there.. we giggled out of nervousness knowing they were trying to leave .. it was 9:30.. and he went back in and loudly stated "they are fu**en laughing like if it was ..." so that we could hear. So this place doesn't even look like a restaurant from the outside it's in a residential area so it almost blends in with the other homes. That being said, I do not like sushi. My boyfriend brought me here knowing this but he got me a bento box. Which was delicious. I ordered the sesame chicken, teriyaki chicken and the pork teriyaki. It comes with rice, salad, and soup.
