Dr. Miyamoto is not truly engaged in a relationship with his patients that leads to long-term dental health. Shaming patients about their dental situation is not effective. His primary focus is shaming, secondary is making sure you know that you'll need a lot of work and he expects cash payment. Wonderful. This review is long overdue and I regret I've waited so long to share my experience with Mr. Mike and his staff. Let's start with the staff. ALWAYS kind, courteous, and professional. That's not the norm nowadays so I appreciate how well I'm treated over the phone as well as at the front desk. In fact, I visited another office that I would never go back to based on how rude the woman at the front desk was. The office is equipped with top of the line equipment and it's kept immaculate. The dental hygienist are thorough and I'm very pleased with the results of my cleanings. About Dr. Mike, he has a sense of humor and is personable. I felt confident with him and his proficiency from my very first visit. He is thorough in his examinations, and explains to you while showing you on your films, what your dental issues are and he discusses with you a treatment plan to include an estimate of the services needed before you begin the work. I've never felt any discomfort, pain, or anxiety while Dr. Mike is working on my teeth, and I am always pleased with his work. I just so happen to have needed to have very extensive work so I visited with three other dentist on the island, and although two others were quite good, I've chosen to stay with Dr. Mike. Dr. Mike was my dentist for years and I was always very pleased. The gentle pain free cleaning I received there over 10 years ago won me over as a patient. I would still be a patient, but my insurance changed to Aloha Care/Liberty Dental and they do not accept that insurance. When I left they had also just changed their payment system to you pay the entire amount and are then reimbursed by insurance. If I could afford it, I feel like it's worth it to go here! read more

Horrible front desk staff. I have never experienced such unprofessional behavior from and professional, or otherwise, service. I made an appointment more than a half of a week in advance, as is common knowledge, one needs to work appointments into his/her life. For example, you make an appointment and adjust your work schedule, find a babysitter, clear plans, etc. I did this and received a confirmation email. I even asked for the patient forms over email so I could be courteous and efficient on what little time a busy working mom has by having the forms completed so that I could turn them in complete upon my appointment. The day of my appointment, my phone is off during the night, and when I turned it on I see missed calls, a voicemail and a text asking me to come in 9 am! By the time I see these, 9 am has passed. The front desk was asking if I would come in so much earlier. Folks, if you don't catch the gist people make appointments in blocks that are convenient for their personal schedule, such as afternoon vs morning. I apologize in text, which I did NOT consent to, nor appreciate receiving. I asked if I should no longer come at 3:30, and Michelle says they'll see me "5 minutes before 3:30". Okay, so now my appointment is ... 3:25? Showing up early is common practice but now she asks for it. Okay so the appointment is set. I go about my day. It takes about 25 minutes to get to their office where I am located, and so depart at 2:50. At a stoplight I see my phone was going off again (on silent), I get missed calls, and a voicemail asking me to come earlier, with 2:56 as the time stamp. What kind of inconsiderate dogmatic thinking does Michelle have? Does she assume I live next door to the office? 5 minutes away even? And that's considering whatever I was doing I'd DROP instantly all o was doing, mine you what about parents with kids who have to arrange things? Well I'm already driving. She is texting me now to call her ASAP. She has access to my address. No matter where one lives, especially with the assumption that I didn't leave yet, why else would she ask me to come sooner? Well common sense is at 3:00pm for a 3:25 appointment the patient is DRIVING, and she's blowing up my phone. Does she expect me to drive faster? How else can her logic make sense. At a stop light I tell her driving and it's unsafe and illegal (I know I replied), to be on my phone, with her harassing me at this point, she keeps texting me. She instead argues back to the patient through text, again I did not consent to texting. Most places ask you if you'd like to receive SMS messages, or begin with a preliminary text and offer opting out. She argues "I tried to call you but could only leave a voicemail", insinuating was my fault for not responding to her demand prior to driving. I tell her at another stop light I was already driving and am not open to last minute altering of predetermined appointment times. She argues back that due to the demand in the office they can move times. I tell her this was not indicated in any of their office contracts. Truly, sometimes offices overbook or something comes up. In that event the professional discourse is to contact the patient as soon as the discretion is realized, and offer to reschedule if a patient can't make a change of time, more so because after confirming 3:25 just 5 hours before the appointment, within half an hour of appointment time! Michelle, you are truly unprofessional. I am appalled by your demanding attitude and your inconsideration for patients, as well as disregard for pre-agreed upon appointment times. Dr. Miyamoto, it is a bummer I could not experience the great cosmetic dentistry you seem to be capable of. You really need to find a bare-Education staff with even the most minimal conception of human consideration, customer service, and professionalism. read more

They have been my dentist for maybe 8 years more or less. I love them but still hate the dentist. They understand and is sensitive of my anxiety. It's a little pricey if your medical doesn't accept them but they are amazing and it would be worth it. read more

Highly recommend! Very gentle, thorough, informative, professional and patient. I've always been in awe that Dr. Mike is able to give completely pain-free injections without any topical anesthetic or gas. His cosmetic dentistry skills are top notch. And Dr. Alan, the hygienists and the rest of the staff are great too! They even have costume contests during the holidays ...which can be pretty entertaining. All in all, this is a great team. I live on the mainland now, but I still preferentially book appointments at this office when I visit Maui. After more than 25 years away from Hawaii, I still can't find a comparable dental office. :-( read more

Dr. Mike Miyamoto is the best, most thorough dentist on Maui. I live in Cali now and cannot find a better or matching dentist to him. My whole family on Maui goes to him now and he has helped them tremendously. Esp. my dad who has really really bad teeth. He is getting him to floss! I wish I could clone him and bring him to long beach, ca! The other thing I like about him is that he keeps on learning about new, improved techniques and keeps educating himself. That is very important to have in a dentist. He is a little pricey but it is definitely 100% worth it. read more

My husband and I were patients for almost 2 years. For the most part we enjoyed coming here. The staff was always friendly, but we did feel like we were pressured to pick the most expensive options for procedures that needed to be done or do pressured to do expensive elective procedures that weren't necessary and not covered by insurance. My husband had to get a filling and instead of explaining his different options and prices(gold, silver or porcelain, I believe) they just went ahead with the most expensive option and left him to find out when he went to pay that porcelain wasn't covered under our insurance. Ultimately the most disappointing thing for us that forced us to leave is that began making patients pay in full for our services and wait for our insurance to reimburse us with a check via mail. Their "reasoning" is that they were tired of being bullied by insurance companies?? I don't know who can afford to pay up front if a big procedure was needed and I'm sure we weren't the only patients that left because of it. My last appointment I explained that we had to seek a dental office that would accept co pays and asked if once we selected a new dentist if they would charge us to have our records sent and I was reassured they wouldn't. Low and behold, when I called to request to have my records sent to my new dental office and they want to charge me a $20 fee. Super disappointed. Ultimately greed won over keeping loyal patients as we would have continued to come here for years.. read more

Okay, let's face it. No one looks forward to going to the dentist. However, if you are lucky enough to live on Maui, I have some really good news for you. We have a wonderful dentist right in the heart of Wailuku -- Dr. Michael Miyamoto. Dr. Miyamoto is an absolute professional at the top of his field, and my wife and I have been very impressed with the care that he and his staff have provided to us. This is a family-owned business that treats its patients like family. Dr. Miyamoto always takes time to explain his recommended procedures in detail, both before and also during the actual visits. He and his entire staff all do a wonderful job in helping their patients feel very welcomed and comfortable. They also educate you on dental health and hygiene. His assistants and staff are very professional and form a highly functional team. In particular, my dental hygienist (Sara) is, without a doubt, the very best dental hygienist I've ever had. Sara is very thorough and extremely gentle while performing all dental procedures. I recently had a crown installed by Dr. Miyamoto. It is hard to believe, but everything was done in just a single visit!!! The installation of the dental crown started in a traditional manner. My tooth was numbed, and Dr. Miyamoto carefully contoured the tooth to shape it for the crown. Then, instead of making a gooey impression of the tooth and sending it to a dental lab, Dr. Miyamoto used a tiny digital camera to create a three-dimensional image of the tooth that needed a crown. This digital image was then electronically sent to a state-of-the-art CAD/CAM -- computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing -- machine in Dr. Miyamoto's office suite. Only a few dentists on Maui currently use CAD/CAM to create a crown while the patient waits. The result is a highly durable ceramic crown that can be immediately bonded in place. According to Dr. Miyamoto, this ceramic crown does not have a metal alloy base, which means there will be no unsightly looking black line around the gum line. With this new CAD/CAM procedure, the crown was created and installed in just a couple of hours. Wow! Dr. Miyamoto definitely has more advanced equipment than my prior dentist on the mainland, which I very much appreciate. read more

Believe me, dental work not high on my list. Having said that, had an awesome experience today at Dr Micheal Miyamotos office. Crown for aging filling, no pain no drama, just a very pleasent procedure. Dr. Mike designed, and fitted a perfect duplicate of my old tooth. Knocked it out in about 2.5 hours, most of the time spent milling then baking the new porcelain crown. Eveb the tingly post op numbness is not an issue. Kudos to you and your great staff! read more

Dr. Miyamoto is an AMAZING dentist. I have TMJ/TMD and for the last 26 years, my jaw has progressively gotten worse while I sought treatment with over 56 oral surgeons, orthodontists and dentists and not one single one would take on my case as my problem was so extreme. (Well the surgeons did but at a cost between $75-150K which I didn't/don't have.) So every year, my condyle joint has gotten flatter and flatter and now, it's so flat that my teeth are severely damaged from the double cross bite. And all that time, everyone I went to rejected me as they believed there would be a strong chance of failure in my treatment. I guess they all want to have a 100% success rate but I needed help desperately. It's hard to watch your teeth wear down and not be able to do anything about it because I didn't have the money or I was a 'lost cause', so to speak. in 2014, I went to Oahu to 3 orthodontists and pretty much every one on Maui, yet none would treat me or just recommended surgery which by the way, is not reversible and the success rate in jaw joint surgery is low but more than that, some people's problems get way worse. If you are considering surgery, do your research. I did and I chose not to as I think the failure rate is too high for someone like me. That brought me to Dr. Miyamoto who is the only one who deals with TMJ/TMD in Maui. Surprise, guess what, he didn't think I was a lost cause but showed me an alternative treatment called neuromuscular orthotics. It's a mouthpiece you wear that balances your jaw to sit the way it should. I can't even begin to tell you how much relief I got when I started wearing this. For 26 years, I suffered with so much pain not just in my jaw, but both my nose and cheeks would crack, I had tremendous earaches which would make me so sick, loss of sleep, ringing in ears, severe neck and shoulder pains and the list goes on. I can't believe how much a jaw can affect your well-being. What I really liked the most about Dr. Miyamoto is that he took so much time with me and answered all my fears/questions. And most of all, he helped me fix the problem and not the symptoms which would have been what the surgery would have done and created more problems in the long run. Lastly, Dr. Miyamoto helped me get my self-esteem back. It really hurts when a doctor says you are a lost cause and that they can't treat you as you are likely not going to be successful. I am so grateful to Dr. Miyamoto to helping me bring my smile back. I still have a long way to go but my jaw is so much happier than it has been in years. Just can't wait to get my teeth capped to fix the damage that happened to them in the 26 years I searched for someone to help me. I absolutely give Dr. Miyamoto 5 plus stars and strongly recommend him for any of those TMJ issues. Neuromuscular science is something that doctors are just starting to learn about and Dr. Miyamoto is already advanced in it so you are working with a top level expert. PS. I have seen many a dentist's office and I have to say, this one is the cleanest by far. Meticulous actually and I love that. read more

Dr. Mike is the greatest dentist on Maui, and very possibly the world! I recently had gum surgery, which in the past was a very painful and horrible sounding procedure that included taking skin from the roof of your mouth! Dr. Mike is THE only dentist on Maui who is trained and certified to perform a new type of gum surgery that is virtually pain free and gets the same results as the horrible old way! You know the saying , you get what you pay for? never in my life had I experienced this till yesterday! I have a chip on my front tooth that keeps on chipping off, sending me back to the dentist. I was sooooo upset that I quit my dentist of 18 years and set out to look for a new dentist. I googled and asked around they all said Miyamoto dentist, Mike does amazing work! I decided to try. Made an appointment only to find out he does not take insurance BUT they will file it for you. You pay up front and get reimbursed by HDS . I thought bummers!! well I'm here let him at least look at my teeth... First thing he said is well we need to fix that front tooth....I said WHAT I just had it done two weeks ago??? He said you notice its transparent and shorter then the other? I said I thought its suppose to be like that cause the last couple fixes looked like that????? Long story short, when he was done you would have not known he fixed that tooth!!! My Goodness I was tearing up when I saw that tooth! everyone at work saw the before and after and said AMAZING.
