I hired Garrett Lee to represent me when a water leak in the walls of my Cambridge apartment created mold, forced half my stuff to sit in the common hallway for weeks, damaged other stuff, and made me sick. I paid him more than $2000 and he did absolutely nothing for me. At first, after seeing the damage and inconvenience, he encouraged me that we had a good case and that I deserved more than $10K in compensation. After he discovered who the management company's lawyer was, however, things changed completely. In fact, he seemed overawed by the attorney, calling him "a very established and well-respected lawyer." From that point on, he seemed more interested in pleasing that attorney than in helping me, his client, in any way. The only accommodations reached were ones I negotiated myself with the building superintendent and those paid for by my insurance company. He did nothing to follow through on documented photographic evidence of the building piling my antique furniture to one side of the apartment while they jack-hammered the concrete walls. I was forced to live for weeks in mold & concrete dust with the windows wide open in FEBRUARY. He charged me inordinate hours for corresponding with me but then, even after taking my $2K, once he got stars in his eyes over their lawyer he did nothing for me - filed nothing, fought for nothing, negotiated nothing. Suddenly instead of saying we had a good case and that I'd get my attorney fees reimbursed along with damages, he was saying we didn't have much of a case. When I pressed and asked him to actually negotiate for damages, he actually said that he was a new lawyer with a young family and couldn't afford to take risks. He began talking down to me and told me to let my insurance move me out and away, that there would be several years to file suit once all was said and done, but I would need more money and a different lawyer to do so. Everything I paid him was a complete waste, thrown away at a time when the forced move and forced temporary quarters was already straining my finances. The whole episode was a textbook example of the wealthy landlord getting away with whatever they wanted and Garrett Lee was no help whatsoever. Afterwards I feel as badly treated by him as by the landlord's attorney. read more
